Usually cameras from the Canon EOS-1 line are usually called differently from what is indicated on the camera body: for example, instead of the 'Canon EOS-1 Ds Mark II Digital' indicated on the camera, it is customary to write 'Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II' (without a dash between 'EOS 'and' 1 ', and' 1 'are written together with the letter' D 'and do not indicate the archaic' Digital '). With the release of the Canon EOS-1D X and the unification of the Canon EOS-1 D and Canon EOS-1 Ds lines, the letter 'D' has already started to be written together with '1'.

There are three main lines of the CZK Canon:

  • Canon EOS-1 - TOP professional cameras of previous generations
  • Canon EOS-1D - TOP professional cameras of our time
  • Canon EOS - all the rest, not belonging to the TOP professional cameras. Roughly speaking, this line includes only amateur or advanced amateur, or semi-professional cameras. Often the line between the camera class is blurred by marketers, in fact there are only 'ones' and 'everything else'.

Canon EOS Model 400D Digital was the last one to use the prefix 'Digital' in its name written on the case. Moreover, in EXIF photographs, many cameras continue to write their name with the prefix 'Digital' to this day.

I did not include the older Canon EOS DSLRs on the nameplate:

  1. Canon EOS DCS 3s / 3m / 3IR - July 1995, APS-C Kf = 1.6x, 1.3 MP, without color display
  2. Canon EOS DCS1 - December 1995, APS-H Kf = 1.3x, 6 MP, without color display
  3. Canon Professional Digital Camera EOS D2000 - May 1998, APS-C Kf = 1.6x, 2 MP, with color display
  4. Canon Professional Digital Camera EOS D6000 - December 1998, APS-H Kf = 1.3x, 6 MP, with color display
  5. there may have been others (e.g. Canon EOS DCS5)

All of these cameras were actually based on a Canon EOS-1n film camera with various digital backs from Kodak called DCS (Digital Camera System) but sold under the Canon brand. These cameras (maybe not all) were also sold under the Kodak brand. It is not customary to talk about them as about 'real' Canon EOS DSLRs.

Crop factor of Canon EOS digital cameras

Canon DSLR cameras can be divided into three classes depending on the size of the sensor used:

  • Canon full-frame cameras with crop factor Kf = 1.0, sensor size 36 X 24 mm.
  • Canon APS-H Crop Cameras with crop factor Kf = 1.3, sensor size 28.7 X 19.1 mm
  • Canon APS-C Crop Cameras with crop factor Kf = 1.6, sensor size 22.3 X 14.9 mm

Coefficient crop factor shows how many times the diagonal of a digital sensor (matrix) is less than the diagonal of a film frame. The full frame measures 36 x 24 mm. More than crop factor, the smaller the physical area of the sensor.

I would also like to draw attention to the fact that the physical size of the sensors for all cameras in their class is the same. Minor differences in tenths of a millimeter can be neglected. The physical size of the sensor greatly affects the capabilities of the camera.

List of all Canon EOS full-frame cameras (Kf = 1.0)

Canon full-frame digital SLR cameras include the EOS-1 Ds, EOS-1D X / C, EOS 5D, EOS 6D ruler cameras:

Digital Camera Mount Types: Canon EF, Canon EF-S, Canon EF-M, Canon RF

Canon interchangeable lens digital cameras use three types of mount:

  • EF (Eelectro-Focus)
  • Ef-s (Eelectro-Focus Small image circle)
  • Ef-m (Eelectro-Focus Mscary)
  • RF (?)

The Canon RF mount is equipped with all Canon EOS mirrorless full-frame cameras.

EF and EF-S mounts are used for SLR cameras.

The EF-M and RF mount are used for mirrorless cameras.

List of all cameras with Canon EF mount:

(!) cameras that are not full-frame but still use the full-frame Canon EF mount are marked.

  • Canon EOS 10D Digital (!)

Very important: with these cameras Cannot use Canon EF-S lenses. They are not mechanically compatible with the indicated cameras. At the same time, lenses from third-party manufacturers such as Tokina, Sigma, Tamron, etc., mainly have a Canon EF mount, even if they are designed for cropped Canon cameras with an APS-C sensor. When using such lenses on full-frame cameras, Canon will be tangible vignetting.

List of all Canon EF-S mount cameras

All Canon EF-S mount cameras are cropped and use an APS-C sensor.

Important: EF and EF-S lenses can be used equally well with these cameras.

A simple and important rule: for cameras with an EF mount, only Canon EOS EF lenses are suitable. For cameras with an EF-S mount, EF and EF-S lenses are suitable.

List of all Canon EF-M mount cameras

  • Canon EOS M
  • Canon EOS M2

All cameras with a Canon EF-M mount are simultaneously cameras with an APS-C sensor.

Different Canon Camera Names: 'D', 'Kiss Digital', 'Digital Rebel' and 'D' for Eastern Countries

Canon in different countries calls its amateur cameras differently: in Japan they are known by the name 'Kiss Digital'and in the USA under the name'Digital Rebel'. In some eastern countries (Asian), some cameras just have a different name. Below is a table of correspondences of names. In Europe and other countries, cameras have a familiar name with the letter 'D'after the model number.

Canon EF-S (EFS) lenses are considered to be simpler than Canon EF lenses. For example, among the Canon EFS lenses there is not a single lens from the professional Canon L line.

The lens names are indicated according to the lettering near the front lens. Usually, near the front lens, cropped lenses are marked with the inscription 'EF-S' (through a dash), near the mount it is marked with the inscription 'EFS' (without a dash, the letter S has a double canvas).

Remark - Wikipedia writes with EF mount still Canon EOS 20D

    • Arkady Shapoval

Wiki is wrong in this question. The last camera with APS-C and EF mount was 10D.

      • Valery

        It says EF and EF-s
        Does this mean only support?

        • Arkady Shapoval

This means that the Canon 20D can use lenses with an EF, EF-S mount.

        • Michael

On Wikipedia, everything is correctly written by EF and EF-S. The camera has an EF-S mount. EF is compatible with it, but there is no backward compatibility.

          • Oleg

In my opinion, only EF lenses just become cameras with a full frame. Both EF and EF-S are placed on the crop. Exception 10d is the only cropped camera to which EF-S lenses that appeared later are not suitable. https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_EOS_10D paragraph about compatibility. By the way, I didn’t know that. Thanks to Arkady for useful information.

            • Arkady Shapoval

No, there are d30 and d60 and APS-H crop.

              • Oleg

All these cameras appeared before 2003. and used an EF mount. While EF-S lenses appeared only in 2003, that is, the first cropped cameras could only use full-frame lenses and were not compatible with EF-S lenses that appeared later. Further, everything seems to be harmonious and understandable for a full frame of only EF. For crop EF-S and EF. But EF- already with a loss of viewing angle due to the smaller matrix. APS-H is nevertheless closer to the full frame and EF-S simply will not cover a large matrix. Yes, and he did not ask

    • AND

      To the former owner I say - 20d ef-s

      • Sergei

These cameras could use crop lenses from non-native manufacturers ...

  • Oleg

I don’t know how Nikon (too lazy to understand the heretical religion), but Canon EOS in mounts is simple. And in all autofocus lenses there is a motor. No screwdrivers :)
There is no camera except Canon and EOS his prophet! :)

    • Sergei

      All fanatics are the same

    • zengarden

      > AND ALL AF lenses have a motor. No screwdrivers :)
Yes, you are just Captain Evidence! :)

    • Oleg

      Holivar invigorates.
The reference material (which Arkady kindly collects) is evidence (a statement of facts).
I added information about the focusing drive.
And I'm not a fanatic, but a user of one of the systems. It would be strange (agree) not to love your technique. As we all love to repeat what the photographer takes, not the camera.

      • Michael

Judging by your statements, you have the opposite)

    • Denis

as well as a stone in the garden of Sony and Pentax

  • Michael

Arkady, it seems to me, it is better to combine the information on the cameras with the size of the sensor and the mount in one table. And it turns out not very readable. There is not much information, and huge lists of the same cameras. You sit and leaf through. Thank you for your work!

  • Yarkiya

I have not read the article, as unnecessary. But I did not find photographic examples shot on this wonderful transparent lens. Got upset.

    • Oleg

but what does the lens have to do with the system

      • Basil

Oleg, you are incomparable! He laughed for a very long time. I think Bright too

        • Yarkiya

It would be funny if it were not so sad.

  • Basil

Arkady, I apologize for being off topic: why did you switch from d700 to d90? D90 is a controversial camera to say the least. Yes, it's fashionable to squeeze something out of it, but you can't even compare it with the d700. What is the reason for such a sharp departure to the early large-scale smack?

    • Michael

Arkady, apparently, will not answer ... It's a pity. I think these are temporary financial difficulties and a replacement for the D700 will be presented soon.

  • Vladimir_Vyshgorod

    The reviewer is very good!
    Thank you!
Well ... .., the same Nikon review is missing !!!!!
    ;)))
Thanks in advance for the Nikon review!

Mistake Link to Canon EOS M3 leads to Canon EOS M5

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Andriy Slobutsky

Privit, Arcadiy! I stand in front of the vibrator of the back frame, chi 7d mkii ... The food of the pole is in the offensive .. I don’t want to be separated from sigma 18-35 1.8-won for ef-s, it’s vuzky, so I’ll pull only the body ... Putting the lens on 5d mkiii. pratsyu, the mirror is not chip, ale і vintka .. I am not strong in optics ale sob, thinking the axis of it: why wouldn’t such an extender be able to improve the image in + compensate for the darkening. Dyakuyu

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can try the teleconverter, but the aperture will fall.

      • Andriy Slobutsky

        Dyakuyu, Arkadiy!

  • a lion

Are full frame and full format the same thing?

  • Alexander

It would be nice to see a list of EF lenses and compatible ones (not Canon).

  • Darya

I bought a Canon 400d camera with a Canon 18-55 mm II lens, autofocus does not work. This dishonest seller sent me a broken lens, or still I'm doing something wrong, as if they should work together.

    • Michael

It’s hard to say what cannot be done. Can the switch in the MF? Probably broken. Are there any other lenses? Do they work?

      • Darya

        Thank you for your reply!
There are no problems with another lens, it works as it should. The switch in AF mode ... I already wiped the Contacts with alcohol, and threw off the camera settings, and took off / put on the battery, and tried not to screw the lens completely, then the photo does, of course, that f is at zero and there was no focus.

        • Michael

It’s better not to put the lens to the end

  • Darya

If I transfer the device to AF mode, the shutter fires, but the camera gives an error 99.

    • Michael

Error Error 99, this is an error that the camera’s self-diagnostic system (camera firmware) cannot recognize.
When the error code err 99 appears on the display of the Canon EOS camera, it is recommended to do what is written on the display first of all - turn off the camera, if the error appears again, do the following:
      Turn off the camera.
Remove the lens, remove the memory card and battery.
      Wait about 20 minutes.
Install a fully charged, if known known good battery.
      Turn on the camera.

  • Victor

Thank you so much for such an exhaustive review and the amount of work done! For lenses in general, for perfectionists and razor-sharp enthusiasts, Captain Obvious has developed two simple rules of thumb:
    avoid any zoom lenses;
avoid prime lenses with focal lengths shorter than the working (rear) section of the system, because focusing beyond the "native" FR + the remaining rear section is a very expensive price, since in this case, in fact, the whole telescopic system is piled up and, naturally, all these telescopic distortions negatively affect image quality, dimensions, weight, and especially - price.
It is clear that for Canon EOS landscape “wide-angles” with AF less than 50 mm are cut off, but alas: anything shorter than the flange distance is an inevitable compromise or a big overpayment for very expensive and heavy L-series lenses. :( The way out is to either take the BZK, or stitch mosaics (which is acceptable only for static scenes), or put up with residual aberrations and mediocre image quality at the edges and corners of the frame.

    • B. R. P.

That is, all shiriki-fixes ftopku? Originously!

  • Sergei

    Hello Arkady!
For myself, in the lens table, I did not find the ones that interest me:

Canon EF 24-105mm f / 4L IS II USM, and
    Canon EF 24-105mm f / 4L IS USM
I would like to know your opinion about them. I would like to know how they differ. (since I am a novice lover, for now I realized that they differ in price).
I would like to know your opinion: for the beginner EOS 6D mark II is this an option? (in a compartment with one of these lenses) or can there be another lens option (price-quality)?

    • anonym

And for them there are no tables)

      • Sergei

How to understand this? Why not? They really exist!

      • Sergei

I understand correctly?!: These lenses for FF?

        • anonym

Yes, you understand correctly. These are lenses with an ef mount. Here I see plates only for ef-s, ef-m, rf. No table, no lens. Here on the site on the first version the review was

    • Novel

Basically - nothing. Naturally, Mark 2 is a little better - technologies do not stand still. Somewhere sharper, somewhere lighter, there are more blades in the diaphragm, but this is how, in principle ... There is money - take the second, no money - take the first.

As an everyday full-time zoom - not bad at all. A compromise in focal length and aperture. L-assembly and picture - no frills, just good.

As an alternative, I just want to wait for Tamron 35-150 / 2.8-4 to come out, it is about to appear. If you prefer to shoot portraits, it’s better due to the loss of wide angle. If the emphasis is on everyday life, architecture, group shots, 24-105 is better. But you have to wait for reviews and reactions.

      • Sergei

Thank you, Roman, for your consultation! I'm still “swimming”, but there was one glimpse: at our place of work, among several “machines” there is an EOS 5D mark II, namely with the EF 24-105mm f / 4L IS USM. I took him to practice, and it seemed to me that he "lathers" even when shooting a natural landscape. And moreover, it lathers faces against the background of forest plantations. He told the sales assistant of a professional photographic store about this (it seems “photographic equipment”), he assured that “soap” is the tricks of this lens. they say Canon EF 24-105mm f / 4L IS II USM has been improved in this regard, and focus on it. WHERE IS TRUE?

        • Novel

In principle, I can hardly imagine the epithet “soapy” for any L-series lens. If it works, it is not soapy. Sharpness is different, yes, other properties are also from good to shiny, but “soapy” ... Perhaps there is something wrong with a particular specimen. Well, the sharpness of the corners at aperture 4.0 at the wide end cannot be guaranteed either.

https://www.flickr.com/groups/canon24-105mmf4lis/pool/ - look at the pictures here. A lot for IS and ISII, you can compare them at different focal points.

          24-105 - a good working full-frame horse.

          • Sergei

Roman, thank you for the link! I have a couple more questions:
            1. all these photos after the Photoshop?
            2. I took pictures right away in JPEG, maybe the pictures in RAW would have been a little bit sharper?

            • Michael

Obviously not all. When shooting in JPEG, sharpness is mainly affected by the camera settings, not the lens itself

              • Sergei

                Got it, thank you!

  • sugar

Do you think third-party manufacturers - sigma, tamron and others - will soon release lenses for RF mount? at native prices biting but the characteristics are clearly better.

  • Leonid.

Something I did not find a list of full-frame lenses Canon EF. And I would like. I want to switch to a full-sized format and have a general understanding of optics. Thank you for attention.

  • Gennady

    Hello!
Can you please tell whether the Canon EOS 700D and the Canon EF 70-300 f / 4-6,5 IS II USM lens will combine and function in a good quality.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    • Arkady Shapoval

What does it mean to combine quality? the lens will work as expected, like on any other Canon

  • Anton

Good afternoon! Tell me, are there any adapters to put a lens with an RF mount on a DSLR?

    • Jury

no, and most likely never will

    • Alexey

and what are we going to do with the working segment, huh? the stone flower will not come out, however))

    • Trueash

There are quite rare and / or home-made adapters for mirrorless cameras - some print them on 3D printers. And on a DSLR, even if it turns out to be mechanically pinned, due to the large difference in working segments, only macro photography will be available.
Ergo: if you find a lens with an RF mount, sell / exchange for another, or buy a mirrorless body for it.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      no and never will

  • Jeka

"Important: using the Canon mount adapter EF-EOS M, you can mount any Canon EF, Canon EF-S lenses on cameras with an EF-M mount."
In addition, because of the adapter, the focal length will increase even more? right?

    • Victor

      No, it will not increase.

  • Jeka

Why? if the real distance to the matrix increases, here I have an adapter and it is 1,5 cm thick. It turns out like a macro ring. there contacts are purely for autofocus.

    • Alexey

      google "Focal length"

      • Jeka

        ahueno understandable))

        • Alexey

if it's hard for you, sell your camera and do something else.
Is it really so difficult to think for 5 seconds - what is the difference between DSLR and UPC, why do they have different lenses and why the adapter from mirror glass to UPC has exactly this thickness?

    • Victor

The focal length on the lens will remain unchanged, even if you put it in a bedside table or drown it in the ocean.
The distance to the matrix has absolutely nothing to do with this parameter.

      • Victor

Here they write correctly - the adapter (as a rule) lengthens the flange distance on mirrorless cameras, just for compatibility with mirror glasses. If there is "overrun" - the focusing range will shift lower, if "underrun" - vice versa.

  • Jeka

In general, to get 50 on a 1.6 crop, you need 35 mm

    • Victor

I don’t know what is meant by the word “get”, but just in case, I will clarify that the EF 50 1.8 through the adapter will give the same focal length as the ef-m 18-55, set at 50mm.

      • Jeka

that is, this adapter allows you to level the crop factor?

        • Victor

No, the adapter allows you to level the difference in flanges.

And the focal length of the lens is the same wherever you put it.

          • Jeka

            Thank you

  • Jeka

    Thank you for the article!
