Usually cameras from the Canon EOS-1 line are usually called differently from what is indicated on the camera body: for example, instead of the 'Canon EOS-1 Ds Mark II Digital' indicated on the camera, it is customary to write 'Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II' (without a dash between 'EOS 'and' 1 ', and' 1 'are written together with the letter' D 'and do not indicate the archaic' Digital '). With the release of the Canon EOS-1D X and the unification of the Canon EOS-1 D and Canon EOS-1 Ds lines, the letter 'D' has already started to be written together with '1'.

There are three main lines of the CZK Canon:

  • Canon EOS-1 - TOP professional cameras of previous generations
  • Canon EOS-1D - TOP professional cameras of our time
  • Canon EOS - all the rest, not belonging to the TOP professional cameras. Roughly speaking, this line includes only amateur or advanced amateur, or semi-professional cameras. Often the line between the camera class is blurred by marketers, in fact there are only 'ones' and 'everything else'.

Canon EOS Model 400D Digital was the last one to use the prefix 'Digital' in its name written on the case. Moreover, in EXIF photographs, many cameras continue to write their name with the prefix 'Digital' to this day.

I did not include the older Canon EOS DSLRs on the nameplate:

  1. Canon EOS DCS 3s / 3m / 3IR - July 1995, APS-C Kf = 1.6x, 1.3 MP, without color display
  2. Canon EOS DCS1 - December 1995, APS-H Kf = 1.3x, 6 MP, without color display
  3. Canon Professional Digital Camera EOS D2000 - May 1998, APS-C Kf = 1.6x, 2 MP, with color display
  4. Canon Professional Digital Camera EOS D6000 - December 1998, APS-H Kf = 1.3x, 6 MP, with color display
  5. there may have been others (e.g. Canon EOS DCS5)

All of these cameras were actually based on a Canon EOS-1n film camera with various digital backs from Kodak called DCS (Digital Camera System) but sold under the Canon brand. These cameras (maybe not all) were also sold under the Kodak brand. It is not customary to talk about them as about 'real' Canon EOS DSLRs.

Crop factor of Canon EOS digital cameras

Canon DSLR cameras can be divided into three classes depending on the size of the sensor used:

  • Canon full-frame cameras with crop factor Kf = 1.0, sensor size 36 X 24 mm.
  • Canon APS-H Crop Cameras with crop factor Kf = 1.3, sensor size 28.7 X 19.1 mm
  • Canon APS-C Crop Cameras with crop factor Kf = 1.6, sensor size 22.3 X 14.9 mm

Coefficient crop factor shows how many times the diagonal of a digital sensor (matrix) is less than the diagonal of a film frame. The full frame measures 36 x 24 mm. More than crop factor, the smaller the physical area of ​​the sensor.

I would also like to draw attention to the fact that the physical size of the sensors for all cameras in their class is the same. Minor differences in tenths of a millimeter can be neglected. The physical size of the sensor greatly affects the capabilities of the camera.

Very important: with these cameras Cannot use Canon EF-S lenses. They are not mechanically compatible with the indicated cameras. At the same time, lenses from third-party manufacturers such as Tokina, Sigma, Tamron, etc., mainly have a Canon EF mount, even if they are designed for cropped Canon cameras with an APS-C sensor. When using such lenses on full-frame cameras, Canon will be tangible vignetting.

Important: EF and EF-S lenses can be used equally well with these cameras.

A simple and important rule: for cameras with an EF mount, only Canon EOS EF lenses are suitable. For cameras with an EF-S mount, EF and EF-S lenses are suitable.

Different Canon Camera Names: 'D', 'Kiss Digital', 'Digital Rebel' and 'D' for Eastern Countries

Canon in different countries calls its amateur cameras differently: in Japan they are known by the name 'Kiss Digital'and in the USA under the name'Digital Rebel'. In some eastern countries (Asian), some cameras just have a different name. Below is a table of correspondences of names.     Thank you so much for such an exhaustive review and the amount of work done! For lenses in general, for perfectionists and razor-sharp enthusiasts, Captain Obvious has developed two simple rules of thumb:
    avoid any zoom lenses;
    avoid prime lenses with focal lengths shorter than the working (rear) section of the system, because focusing beyond the "native" FR + the remaining rear section is a very expensive price, since in this case, in fact, the whole telescopic system is piled up and, naturally, all these telescopic distortions negatively affect image quality, dimensions, weight, and especially - price.
    It is clear that for Canon EOS landscape “wide-angles” with AF less than 50 mm are cut off, but alas: anything shorter than the flange distance is an inevitable compromise or a big overpayment for very expensive and heavy L-series lenses. :( The way out is to either take the BZK, or stitch mosaics (which is acceptable only for static scenes), or put up with residual aberrations and mediocre image quality at the edges and corners of the frame.

      Basically - nothing. Naturally, Mark 2 is a little better - technologies do not stand still. Somewhere sharper, somewhere lighter, there are more blades in the diaphragm, but this is how, in principle ... There is money - take the second, no money - take the first.

      As an everyday full-time zoom - not bad at all. A compromise in focal length and aperture. L-assembly and picture - no frills, just good.

      As an alternative, I just want to wait for Tamron 35-150 / 2.8-4 to come out, it is about to appear. If you prefer to shoot portraits, it’s better due to the loss of wide angle. If the emphasis is on everyday life, architecture, group shots, 24-105 is better. But you have to wait for reviews and reactions.

          In principle, I can hardly imagine the epithet “soapy” for any L-series lens. If it works, it is not soapy. Sharpness is different, yes, other properties are also from good to shiny, but “soapy” ... Perhaps there is something wrong with a particular specimen. Well, the sharpness of the corners at aperture 4.0 at the wide end cannot be guaranteed either.

      There are quite rare and / or home-made adapters for mirrorless cameras - some print them on 3D printers. And on a DSLR, even if it turns out to be mechanically pinned, due to the large difference in working segments, only macro photography will be available.
      Ergo: if you find a lens with an RF mount, sell / exchange for another, or buy a mirrorless body for it.
