Canon 10D is a very old representative of camera industry. But, despite the fact that the camera was released back in 2003, it can still show excellent image quality, and it retains the basic advanced SLR camera functionality.

First impression of the camera - sits perfectly in the hand, has a significant weight of 790 g, very well shot down. Rubberized handles. The case and control parts are very well knocked down. I personally liked the Canon 10D much more than its competitor Nikon D100. Of course, time takes its toll, and the camera does not have many modern functions, but it still shoots - which means it was made wisely and properly, and the inscription Made in Japan pleasing to the eye.

As usual, the important points that a photographer should pay attention to when buying and / or using a Canon 10D.

  1. Camera only supports Canon EF lenses. The camera does not support EF-S crop lenses. This limits the choice of lenses, it is especially difficult to choose a native super wide-angle lens.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

Example photo on a Canon 10D

  2. Canon 10D has an APS-C sensor with crop factor 1.6. This means that the angle of view with the lenses will decrease and the Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II lens will have an angle of view equivalent to the angle of view of the 80mm (50mm * 1.6 = 80mm) lens on a film camera or in full frame. Whoever first heard about crop is not a camera flaw, but just that type. For example, super Canon 60D has the same crop factor 1.6.

  3. At the camera 6.3MP CMOSsensor At the moment, this is not much. But 6.3 megapixels is enough for almost any photo task. Yes, and not in megapixels quality is measured - an example of this is my article Battle of Megapixels.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

  4. Canon 10D has 7 focus points. It is quite enough for comfortable work. Only, the camera does not support confirmation of focus with manual (non-chip) lenses, as well as 5 focus points located in one line, and one more from the top and bottom.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

  5. Exposure from 30 seconds to 1 / 4000s. It is quite enough for any task. Newer models of this line, for example Canon 60Dhave a minimum shutter speed of 1/8000.

  6. The camera has everything 1.8 inch display. It is not convenient to view the pictures on it. This is a tribute to time. The same display is on Nikon D100 from the same era of camera building. The display gives a strong blue and all pictures when viewed appear with the wrong white balance.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

Example photo on a Canon 10D

  7. Short, clear menu. I liked the menu. Small, understandable, only all the most important. Convenient menu navigation.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

  8. Canon 10D excellent ergonomics. Maybe the display is small, but large selector. Moreover, its size is huge - because it is very convenient when rotating in a circle. For me, this is even more important than a huge display. Using the buttons you can quickly change BB, ISO, amendment exposurefocus point. The camera has a bracketing function.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

  9. Optional monochrome displayon which all the most necessary information is displayed. The presence of an additional display is difficult to overestimate, and this is not archaism, but simply a well-designed functional tool. The monochrome display has a yellow backlight, which is activated by an additional button.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

  10. Camera Canon 10D can measure exposure with any lens and even without it. This feature is sorely missed by Nikon's entry-level and mid-range cameras. This means that you can put on the camera a cheap Helios-44m-2 and get just the prohibitive quality of images in a semi-automatic aperture priority mode. True, there is one minus when working - no confirmation of focusing when working with manual lenses, which is on the Nikon system. If you need confirmation of focusing, then purchase an adapter with a built-in chip (Dandelion Lushnikova for Canon) will help with this.

High ISO Photos at Canon 10D

High ISO Photos at Canon 10D

  11. The camera uses large CF UDMA, which allow to achieve very high write / read speeds.
  12. Canon 10D has buffer for 9 RAW frames. This is a good indicator. My Nikon D90 has a buffer of 11 frames, and a direct competitor Nikon D100 only 4 frames. In serial shooting, the Canon 10D works 3 seconds before starting to slow down. It pleasantly surprised me. Of course, in JPEG you can shoot much more before the buffer is full.
  13. ISO 100 - 1600, can be increased to 3.200, if you enable the ISO Expansion menu item
  14. In the camera Canon 10D no Russian language. It will not be convenient for someone to use.
  15. Canon 10D shoots at maximum speed 3 frames per second. It's not much, but on my Nikon D40 2.5 frames per second is enough for me for all tasks. Each has its own shooting style, because each person's attitude to rate of fire is also different.

    Canon 10D sample photo

    Canon 10D sample photo

  16. The weight of the RAW file is 5-7MB. JPEG file weight from 1 to 5MB.
  17. Flash sync with minimal shutter speed 1/200. The camera does not have the ability to quickly synchronize with flashes and can not control the flashes remotely.
  18. The camera turns on in 2 seconds. Pretty long. Especially when you need to frame as quickly as possible. Also, when viewing images, the camera thinks a little.
  19. At the bottom of the camera, where there are tripod mounts, there is a lid for a tablet battery. I think the battery is needed for an intra-system timer. I've never met this before.
  20. If you read up to the 20th point in this article and want to find out all the very finest subtleties and camera behavior, I highly recommend downloading and reading the Canon 10D manual.

Personal experiencee: Canon 10D does not have the usual multi-selector with left-right keys, it is rather unusual, and in order to move around the selected area when viewing an image, you need to change the directions up-down and left-right with an additional button. Viewfinder is small, complicates focusing with manual optics. But I really liked the ergonomics in general, and if not for the small display, then I would not hesitate to take the camera to one of the modern Canon 50D, Canon 60D.

Example photo on a Canon 10D

Picture: always remember that a photographer, light, and a lens rather than a camera influence a photograph more. 6.3 megapixels give a completely normal picture. The camera almost always quite correctly determines BBThe colors are great. Noises - yes, without them anywhere. The camera gives out high noise at high ISO above ISO 800. Personally, I have long stopped bothering with noise, especially after I conducted the test described in the article Battle of Megapixels. True, the Canon 10D does not always correctly guess the exposure, you just need to get used to it and make the necessary correction when shooting, or just shoot in RAW with post-processing. It is clear that it can be proved that the picture with the Canon 10D is much worse than modern super-duper cameras, but Radozhiva does not do this and is of the opinion that important how to take pictures, and not by what means. And each person chooses the technique individually.

To date, the Canon 10D is the camera at the best price-quality performance for people who value the final result, rather than a million chips on the camera. I recommend the camera for beginners and even for advanced enthusiasts. The Canon 10D camera can now be taken on the secondary market in the region of 300 cu Given that a real photographer buys a lens, and buys a camera for change, the Canon 10D is one of the very good options.

Prices for modern Canon cameras in popular stores can look at this link.

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. For the selection of photographic equipment, I recommend large catalogs of various photographic equipment, such as E-Catalog, or large online stores such as Socket. Many little things for the photo can be found on AliExpress.

Conclusions: Canon 10D is a very convenient camera. Suitable for beginners, amateurs and advanced photography enthusiasts. It would be suitable for professionals, but the market is dictated by its conditions and the old woman Canon 10D can no longer compete with the bells and whistles of its contemporaries. I really liked the ergonomics, a little upset the speed of work.

[foto ... Rose ...], believe me, everything is sad, there is no razor sharpness and color, the lens is to blame, you need to try another lens ...

I bought myself such a handsome man in the fall of 2018. Before that, there was only a film soap dish and smartphones with “advanced” cameras: Sony Xperia Z, Z2, XZ1, etc. I bought it for only 1500 UAH. complete set: the DSLR itself (albeit without a booster - I bought it only recently), a Canon EF 35-80 mm f / 4-5.6 II lens, a 512MB flash drive, battery, card reader, charger. Even the strap was original)). The most interesting thing is that he looks like he just got it out of the box. The run, as the seller said, was only 6300 frames, since he practically did not use it. And it looks like it is. There are practically no traces of exploitation on it. There are only a couple of scratches on the monochrome display and little wear on one side. Otherwise, everything is as new! For the quality of the picture, I generally keep quiet. Now I try not to enlarge photos from smartphones - all the “beauty” of their sensors is immediately visible)). Below I will post a couple of photos from it.

      Bravo! Great shot!

I would also like to buy some fifty dollars for it, for example, Helios-81H or Canon EF 50mm f / 1.8 II. Kenon, of course, has a big plus - there is autofocus and a native mount. But as far as I understand, there can be no talk of 1.8 or even 2.4 sharpness throughout the field ... Helios is better in this regard - for him and f / 2 is already working. So I think what to do. I just don't know if the picture will be sharper and more contrasting with them, compared to my zoom? Whether it is worth buying, tell me, those in the know. I would be grateful for any advice!

    • Michael

Try it yourself. I doubt the working f / 2 Helios, and with enlightenment, everything is bad there. Native preferred

    • Basil

First: on kenon, it is better to have helios 44m, 44-2, etc. with a m42 thread. They are cheaper.
Secondly: on Helios 81, f2.0 is really working (for Helis 81H itself)
Thirdly, autofocus lenses are indeed preferable, since 2-3 pictures 3 10 will be in focus. And what will be in sharpness, a whale or a fifty-fifty - I don't know. But most likely the whale will be sharper. He's a fifty-fifty for a portrait, and there you don't need much sharpness. IMHO

      • Stanislas

I bought myself this lens recently. Helios did not want to. in a normal state it is more difficult to find it, and it is not a fact that a normal, not “soapy” sample will come across. To the same "load" was given a SLR "Kiev-19" with a cover in good condition (only in some places the inserts peeled off). The lens itself is in excellent condition, no dust or scratches, 1988. In general, I like it, even very much. The first days I could not get the hang of focusing at f / 2.8 - f / 2. Somehow all the time it turned out to catch the focus a few millimeters closer. It turned out that I was just taking a picture when ripples in the center of the viewfinder just appeared on the focusing object, and I had to literally twist a millimeter or two until it disappeared. It's much easier to focus on “Kiev” - Doden's wedges decide). But now there is practically no marriage at 10D.
Regarding sharpness: Helios-81n is even sharper at f / 2 than my EF 35-80 III at f / 4. And in general, it surpasses Canon in sharpness and picture. I will attach a couple of pictures below.

        • Novel

For 10D, there used to be interchangeable focusing screens. KatzEye has already closed, unfortunately, but you can still find something on Ali. With the Doden wedges just.

I caught a funny moment (it was quite dark, I used manual mode and the built-in flash):

A very interesting article Now there is such a variety of digital cameras. Recently I came across a Canon 10D camera on E-Bay and then I came across your article, everything is very simple and intelligible. I am an old amateur photographer, I began to study on film with almost all Soviet cameras, I switched to digital, I did not change for a long time because I wanted to shoot with a DSLR. I shot Canon 500 D for several years, and I turned up a Canon G7 camera and I fell in love with this model! I also bought a Canon G11 and now I rarely shoot with a DSLR. The teacher from whom I studied photography liked to say “There are no bad cameras, there are bad photographers” and he also had a saying “A good photographer can take a photograph even with a matchbox” Now I’ll go to E-Bay again to look at Canon 10D

  • Ivan Draganov

Hello my friends! I love to buy Az, I bought the Canon 10D for myself, for crawling with the adapter for the M42 lens. Looking for pictures I love Helios 44-2. Sega with damages and an adapter, I want to give you the impression from you. Congratulations !

  • Mr. Boggy

There used to be good fotics, and even the design needed a solid, brutal THING. No wifi videos and anything, just a great photo! How much I wanted this in my youth in 2003-2004, but then the prices were terrible for him. Although it is full right now, the cameras at home, but still the desire to buy this miracle, to play. At one time, this device was in the niche of the dimes, before the introduction of FF. Therefore, when developing it, they tried in terms of reliability. And yet his body is the best in a two-digit series, beauty!

  • Alexander

I purchased its predecessor - D60 (the same matrix) in order to sell with it the Sigma 28 / 1.8 which does not work with later digital cameras. But when I looked at what this camera gives in the picture, I not only didn’t sell it, but I also bought 10D. It's all about the BOLD pixel! A completely analogue picture! And there is no blurring that appears with an increase in the number of pixels. Especially if you use high quality optics. Kind of high-quality and expensive fixfuckles

My five cents on this camera
