Canon EOS 100D review

According provided by camera Canon EOS 100D (body) many thanks to Vladimir Fesko.

Please note that camera is released under different brand names for different countries / regions - Canon EOS 100DCanon EOS Kiss x7 and Canon EOS Rebel SL1. I was visited by two cameras: Canon EOS Rebel SL1 (some of the sample photos in this review were shot on it) and Canon EOS 100D.

Canon EOS 100D review

Canon EOS 100D review

The Canon EOS 100D was introduced on March 21, 2013, along with the more advanced Canon EOS. 700D, and an updated stock ('kit') lens Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM. Unfortunately, I came across a kit with a conventional, not an STM lens, namely the Canon EOS 100D with Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS II (a little later, Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM).

The main feature of the Canon EOS 100D is its little weight... We can say for sure that the Canon 100D is the lightest APS-C format DSLR (at least as of Spring 2014 when this review was made). With battery and memory card, it weighs only 407 grams. If you take out all that is superfluous, then the weight becomes equal to 370 g. Personally, I am very much attracted by the super-light DSLR camera with a large matrix (crop factor 1.6) for carrying on hikes, to friends, around the city and, in general, for every day. And the small camera body looks like an advanced 'soap box' rather than an SLR camera. The smaller the size of the camera, the less you attract the attention of others :).

The small weight of the camera stands out from other Canon SLR cameras and other manufacturers. Of course, there are CZKs and with a lower weight, for example, the Olympus E420, but also crop factor Olympus already has 2.0 :(. Well, a number of mirrorless cameras weigh much less than the Canon EOS 100D, but mirrorless cameras are a completely different story.

Weight of some entry-level SLT and SRL cameras

Weight of some entry-level SLT and SRL cameras (weight is approximate)

Due to its small size and weight, the camera uses an LP-E12 battery, which lasts only 400-500 shots, which is significantly less than on other central control centers (for example, charging an old woman D40 with a fix lasts for more than a thousand clicks of the shutter). Therefore, if you intend to purchase such a camera for more or less lengthy photo shoots, then you will have to think about buying a spare battery.

But still, the Canon EOS 100D remains quite large, and therefore it retains the remains of a convenient grip on the body, especially since the front of the handle is rubberized. However, as soon as you put a “serious” lens or an external flash on the camera, it immediately becomes clear that all this stuff may not fit in a regular handbag :).

Sizes of Canon EOS 100D and Canon EOS 350D

The camera can be very easily and pleasantly controlled using a touch screen that supports multi-touch and this is no more complicated than a modern smartphone. 3-inch display with 1.040.000 points. A similar display is available for models. Canon 650D, 700D и 70D, but only on more advanced cameras, the display is also rotary.

I am very pleased that the touch control on Canon cameras is so well implemented and at times surpasses it on some mirrorless cameras, for example, such as Olympus OM-D E-M1. Unfortunately, Canon already has four SLR cameras with touch controls, while its direct competitor, Nikon, has none :(.

Canon EOS 100D rear view

In normal shooting mode, the Canon 100D uses a 9-point focus that has already become classic, with the center point being a cross-shaped one, with a high-precision sensor that turns on when using high-aperture optics. This focus module appeared in the old woman Canon 20D and used to this day. You can read more about the focusing modules for Canon cameras. here.

Canon EOS 100D, top view

Canon EOS 100D, top view

But in Live View (when focusing using the main display) for the first time used new Hybrid CMOS AF II focusing system... Phase sensors located on the matrix itself are used to determine the focusing direction, and the usual contrast focusing method is used for precise focusing. Unlike the similar focusing system in the models Canon 650D, 700D, EOS M, the Canon 100D has significantly increased the coverage area of the frame with phase sensors, which is about 80%, while on cameras with the first generation Hybrid CMOS AF system, the coverage area is much smaller. For video shooting, the development of new hybrid focusing systems is very, very popular. The full potential of the Hybrid CMOS AF II is revealed only when using new lenses with STM-motors (STMSTepper Motor - stepping motor focusing), which allow you to quickly and accurately focus on sharpness during video and photography.

Of course, the Canon 100D in Live View focuses much better than cameras without a hybrid focusing system, but it's a pity that the Live View focus is often wrong and, in general, it works slowly, flickers, and often cannot quickly focus on sharpness . Focusing works noticeably worse than on some mirrorless cameras (which use focus mode when Live View is enabled by default). Personally, the Hybrid CMOS AF II was a little disappointing to me, but still, it's much better than nothing.

Canon 100D with Canon 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 STM standard lens

Canon 100D with full-time lens Canon 18-55 / 3.5-5.6 STM

The camera can shoot at maximum speed 4 fps. That's just frame buffer not very capacious. If you disable all the additional functions that reduce the number of shots:

  • Peripheral correction. lighting (vignetting)
  • Chromate correction. aberrations
  • ISO auto
  • Auto Brightness
  • Shumopod. when it lasts. shutter speed
  • Shumopod. at high ISO
  • ISO range extension
  • Light priority

then it will fit into the buffer:

  • 7 RAW format shots
  • 9 pictures in JPEG format, quality L, but the series of pictures becomes almost endless
  • 4 pictures in RAW + JPEG format

If you enable all additional functions, then it will fit into the buffer:

  • 6 RAW format shots
  • 4-5 pictures in JPEG format, quality L
  • 2 pictures in RAW + JPEG format

For review, I took test shots in RAW + JPEG mode, with some additional features turned on, and, after two frames, the camera switched to thoughts about life, the universe, and in general, which kept me waiting for the buffer to be released :(.

Canon 100D can use ISO 100 to 25.600 units, however, the value of 25.600 in the camera means 'H' ('High' - 'high') and it can be turned on only when the highlight priority function is turned off. Also, ISO above 6400 is not available when shooting movies. The camera has an excellent 'ISO auto' function, although it is also limited by a ceiling of 6400 units, but it works even in manual camera control mode, in video mode, and even with manual lenses. The only pity is that you cannot set the exposure limits, the camera selects them by itself, taking into account the focal length of the lens. I do not recommend shooting at 6400 or higher.

Canon 100D

Canon EOS 100D body and Canon EOS 70D body

Of course, one cannot do without high-quality video filming. You can shoot at Full HD 1920 x 1080 30p (29.97 or 25 or 23.98 fps), and if you reduce the size to HD 1280 x 720 you can shoot at 59,94 and 50 fps. For those who do not need heavy video files, there is a 640 x 480 mode with a frequency of 30 or 25 fps. Video is written in MOV format with H.264 codec and mono sound. Video control available shutter speed, aperture and ISO value :). Full exposure control is lacking in such Amateur Nikon Cameras.

Like most modern cameras, the Canon EOS 100D crammed with a large variety of functions and features:

  1. Built-in help for beginners, allowing you to quickly get acquainted with the camera :).
  2. Many different 'creative' filters, as well as the ability to edit captured photos right in the camera.
  3. The camera can create short videos, sometimes it can be a fun feature.
  4. There is also an automatic sensor cleaning system.
  5. Built-in flash, the power of which is quite enough for most tasks.
  6. Measurement exposure is performed using a 63-zone sensor with dual layer SPC and iFCL, the same as on a huge number of other Canon EOS cameras. Detailed information on this issue can be found in the section 'Canon Camera Metering Sensors'.
  7. The camera has a special sensor that turns off the display when you bring the camera to your face.
  8. The ability to shoot with one touch to the camera display (like on smartphones).
  9. Near the camera mount there is a DOF preview button.
  10. There is an input for a stereo microphone, a remote control cable, as well as USB and Mini HDMI connectors

Here link to the archive with the originals - 975 MB, 44 photos in .CR2 format (RAW), lenses were used when shooting Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS II (caught not the most successful instance) and Nikon 180mm 1: 2.8 ED AF Nikkor (IF, MKIII). You can find more examples on the Canon EOS 100D in the Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens review.

Caution, spoiler: recently, Canon has released cameras based on the same 18 MP matrix (in fact, images contain only 17.915.904 pixels). Based on this matrix, which was first used in Canon 7D, a whole horde of cameras was built: Canon EOS M, M2, Canon 60D, 60 Da, 550D, 600D, 650D, 700D.100D 1200D. Of course, the matrix was periodically updated, so in Canon 650D, 700D, 100D, EOS M, M2 sensors for phase focusing were built into it, some cameras expanded the ISO limits by one step and no one will tell you exactly what has been finalized. The same goes for signal processing algorithms. But as the image no major shifts occurred. Moreover, according to synthetic tests, older Canon cameras outperform the new ones in some image quality parameters. Here link on dxomark, where it is clearly visible :(. Hello! Please tell me which adapter M42 is compatible with canon d100. I want to purchase a Soviet lens helios or jupiter. Thanks.

    • Rodion

      Any M42-EOS)

  • Igor

Acquired as a complement to his monsters to stay in the car. I could not even imagine that it would cause so many positive emotions.

    • Lynx

I had to take white. it would be even more u-nya-nya !!!

  • Alexey

If this camera writes video clips with mono sound, then why is there a stereo connector for an external microphone? Or when connecting an external microphone, does the number of audio tracks in the file also change?

  • Wave

Could answer the question. You need to know whether high-speed flash synchronization (HSS) will work on Canon 700d and Canon 100d cameras with a Helios 81H lens installed through a Canon-Nikon adapter with a chip? Thank you

  • Igor

Tell me, please, is the TUMAX DPT386AFZ-C compatible with the CANON 100D?

  • Alexey

    Hello!
I’m thinking about taking the Canon 100d or Olympus OM-D EM5 in good condition.
Not correctly m. compare, but still ..

    • Oleg

I would stop on the Canon all the same crop 1.6 is better than 2.0. If the question is compact, then kenon has pancakes 24 and 40mm. 50 \ 1.8stm for a reasonable price. Yes, and the old Soviet lens can be attached to the case. And you attach an old fifty dollars to an olive, and this is already sort of like a fifty dollars, but as much as 100 mm, quite narrow

      • Alexey

Thank you, but with lenses, what will be cheaper in the long run?

        • Oleg

The kenon crop is well balanced in terms of price and quality. Two lenses of a Kenon 40mm pancake plus 50 \ 1.8stm cost about as much as a single 45mm Olik, the most inexpensive lens of the system except for the whale. Plus, if you suddenly decide to grow to a full frame, these lenses will stay with you, where a pancake, for example, will turn into a moderate width. In the case of Olik you are hostage to one system with crop 2.0. An over-width of 10-18 on kenon will cost $ 300, the most inexpensive today. Full-frame full-length portraiture 85 \ 1.8 350-400 dollars. To shoot birds 55-250, here I think the old version of is2 without stm will not yield to the new one, it costs quite cheap it seems 150-170 dollars

          • Alexey

Thanks. The lens comparison is in favor of Canon. The case was compared. Ergonomic 100d than OM-D. This probably also indirectly affects the quality of the pictures,
because the hand holds stronger, what is more convenient to hold, less movement.
Is it cleaner at high ISO, also 100d?

            • Oleg

As for ISO, I will not tell you in the reviews they write that ISO 1600 is quite working at 100d. All full-frame cameras on the ISO 6400 already usually have noticeable noise in the shadows. Here is a review of D. Yevtifeyev’s olik, including about noise http://evtifeev.com/34683-vpechatleniya-ot-fotokameryi-olympus-om-d-e-m10-mark-ii-kit-14-42mm-pri-ispolzovanii-v-puteshestvii.html

              • Alexey

                Thanks! An interesting, different review.
                I learned a lot.
My love for Olympus began in the late 90s, with some I don’t remember the names of the soap dishes that they took on travel. We noticed that the pictures are somehow different from others.
Continued with a simple, cheap but magical E-PL1. There was some strange magic in her
But I didn’t buy a new OM-D Em5, and there, despite the fact that objectively technically everything is better, it subjectively seemed that something was already missing.
                Sold ..

              • Oleg

In general, I bought kenon out of a desire to indulge in old Soviet optics, which were a little on hand, and then I bought something else. Of all the old manual optics, in my opinion, Olympus lenses for SLR cameras deserve the most attention. Which have a compact design and good image quality, unfortunately the price for them bites. It's a pity that Olik left the market for SLR cameras and lenses.

      • Iskander

And fifty dollars on 1,6 crop is too narrow for ordinary tasks, in order to shoot a full-length portrait, you need to move about 4 meters, in a small room it’s uncomfortable, but it’s cool bokeh. And with a wide angle, the whale 18-55 copes well.

  • Alexey

If Canon is pampered, then what not to pamper?

    • Oleg

I mean, kenon is better suited for shooting old manual optics. But in general, all modern amateur cameras give the user a large enough scope for creativity.

  • Olya

    Good review! Thanks!
    I choose between Canon 100d and Nikon d3300. I just can't decide ...
Tell me please, and "fifty dollars" will fit the Canon 100d ?! And then they all say about the "pancake" 40mm ...
    Thank you for your reply!

    • Rodion

They say about pancake, because the camera implies the use of compact lenses in many respects. All EF and EF-S optics are compatible with this camera, obviously. Those. A half-pot of 50 / 1.8 will do. But in general, you can look at YongNuo 50 / 1.8, which they sell on Ali. Cheaper and in many ways more enjoyable.

  • Dmitriy

Hello, will the review for 200d be? As compared to 100d.

  • Irina

Good day. Help with a choice please. I can not decide between Canon eos 200d u canan eos 1300d. Recently I started to study photography. I took the camera from my friends, but I need to take my own. I think an inexpensive device is suitable for echala. If the hobby turns into a more serious hobby, I will take the full frame.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I recommend the 200D, this is a newer camera with a new sensor and new buns.

    • Oleg

And I probably would have chosen 100d for 200d only more megapixels, as well as the same 100d. At high ISO, if you believe the reviews for both, the limit of 1600 will be. Plus, the price is smaller and the size is slightly smaller, which can be very interesting for a girl

      • Iskander

I agree, I consider 24 megapixels redundant for such a matrix. But the 100d does not have a rotary screen, Wi-Fi (which can be critical for girls) and interval shooting, however this is partially solved using the remote control or connecting to a computer using the utility that comes with the kit.

  • Eugene

Hello, thanks for your reviews! Please tell me which is better to take: Canon EOS 1300D EF-S 18-55 IS II Kit or Canon EOS 100D 18-55DC a difference of 1000 rubles. and briefly please why, thanks in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

It is preferable to 100d because of the better focusing system during video shooting (Hybrid AF 2 versus normal focusing by contrast), servo focusing in video mode, slightly better burst speed (4 frames versus 3 frames), slightly better display and other details. 100d in general, slightly above the 1000D-> 1100D-> 1200D-> 1300D line
      Overall rating of cameras here.

      • Eugene

after your reviews, I’m more inclined to 100d, but he has a lens without stabilization, as I understand it, but how critical I can’t understand. In the near future there will be no money for the lens, I do not want to repulse all the interest if this affects the photos.

        • Eugene

the seller said that the pictures will be blurred if they are photographed without a tripod, especially in conditions of insufficient lighting or a little faster shutter speed. so I doubt it.

          • B. R. P.

The seller pursued his goals. Firstly, you can buy a separate camera and a separate lens with a stub. Secondly, for shooting in low-light conditions, increase the sensitivity (ISO). Thirdly, the stub on wide and medium focal lengths is not critical.

          • Stas

It is more profitable for the seller to take the kit lens from the kit, because it costs more outside the kit. But I would have sold another lens to the camera, winning on this) Two birds with one stone: a whale for sale separately and a sold lens for replacement.

  • Parthen

Hello everyone, I wanted to speak out about the battery charge, I use such a device for 3-4 hours in a row, enough for 1300 photos at least in raw format. The battery is very satisfied.

... ”Due to its small size and weight, the camera uses an LP-E12 battery, which is enough for only 400-500 shots, which is noticeably less than on other CZK (for example, charging the old lady D40 with a fixer is enough for more than a thousand shutter clicks ). "

    • Iskander

I also have a native battery for about 1000 shots. The screen brightness is 50%, the sensor is turned on, which turns off the screen when sighting through the viewfinder, and also if the camera hangs on the belly (a convenient feature) and I don’t look at the photos for half an hour.

  • Sergei

Hello. Tell me, at an equal price, preference for which device to give the Canon 100 or Nicon 3300?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would prefer the d3300 due to the newer matrix.

      • Sergei

        Thank you!

  • Novel

Hello! Tell me which camera is better to choose: Canon 100d or Olymus om-d e-m5. I think in the beginning I’ll shoot more straight. But I want to try a portrait. Canon, as I understand it, will have an advantage in depth of field and focus at dusk. The Olympus is attracted by rich control capabilities, a stabilizer and a rotary screen. I choose between these two because I want to have the device as often as possible with me

    • York

      Wonderful box!
Canon's most underrated DSLR is small, but practically real, with all the gingerbreads of the most sophisticated photo system at the moment. Canon even managed to cut it so that it turned out to be a balanced apparatus.
But damn it, everything that starts well ends badly ...
I was really looking forward to the 250d release, I still wanted a screen on a hinge, and here these shitty cobblers decided that they had gone too far with the weaving, and cut, in addition to everything else, the shoe ...

Therefore, the weaving will remain like a wonderful camera-link.

      • Novel

200D to the rescue. Hinge plus battery.

      • Novel

In the sense of the best use of battery.

    • Stas

I would choose a hundred, you can find optics and accessories for it at quite reasonable prices. Plus, Canon is still much more common on the secondary market, and you are more likely to find some interesting bun for the camera.
Olik is also good, but glass prices are not encouraging, we have few of them, unfortunately.

  • Sergei

Hello. I bought a Canon 100d with a Canon Zoom Lens EF-S 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, please tell me a lens for shooting birds and animals in natural conditions.

    • Novel

From inexpensive, native and compact - ef-s 55-250 IS STM. A bit dark, but gives a good picture, in summer on a sunny day - it will do.

Of the more expensive, there are many good lenses, but given the tiny size of the 100D, using them will be very inconvenient. Yes, and the path of teleoptics.

    • Iskander

If the pens are playful, then here is the most rogue option https://radojuva.com/2019/06/zt4-20×50/
You can also look at inexpensive Soviet televisions, for example, Tair-3, as well as inexpensive telescopes, a camera is fastened instead of an eyepiece through an adapter to them. But you will have to forget about autofocus and the stabilizer.

  • Sergei

    Thank you!

  • Elmira

Good afternoon) I have been reading your site with pleasure for a long time - everything is simple, understandable and without snobbery))
    Hope to help with advice.
I want to change my old man Nikon D5100 (for 7 years the camera literally hit us) for something newer budget.
I rarely take pictures, but aptly - on trips, so I want something like "got it and took it off" - delving into the settings is boring.
Whistles and buns are not needed, I do not shoot video.

    • Alexey

"Got it and took it off" for travel - this is the SONY RX100. Moreover, the first model is still quite suitable for itself, but you can look at the subsequent ones, depending on the thickness of the wallet.
A DSLR is not required for such an application, and often completely redundant.

  • Valeria

I have canon eos 100d is stm. I bought not so long ago. I would like to know about additional flash units. I still do not understand them. But I would like to know in more detail which flash units fit this camera and whether they fit at all? If you are not a burden, then enlighten me, please.

    • Roman

Any genuine Canon flash and any third-party flash designed for Canon.

But the 100D is a fairly small camera and a large flash on it will outweigh. Therefore, you can try some compact flash for 2 batteries like the Canon 270 EX II or Meike 320.

Well, or a more serious decision from the radio transmitter on the flash and 1 (2, 3 flashes) on the offset, which are ignited by this transmitter. It’s more convenient because lighting schemes are more realistic and there are more options for customization. A flash without modifiers on the camera differs from the flash built into the camera, not very significantly.

  • Elena

Hello. Tell me, please, which flash to choose for canon 100d?

    • Roman

Formally, any will do. Considering the diminutive size of the camera, it could be something with two batteries - Canon 90EX, Godox TT350C TTL or others. Full size will outweigh.

But a flash on a camera, even on a large one, is very, very inconvenient. For cases when, well, nothing at all - there is a built-in one. The large on-camera outweighs, the small one does not even unfold properly, will give light directly to the forehead - again, why, if there is a on-camera. Therefore, a much better option would be to take any flash from Godox or Yongnuo (well, or a system flash from Canon - it's more expensive) and a radio control module to it. It is small, just right on the camera, and will also give an autofocus illumination. And you can put a flash with any attachment wherever you want, put it in a stripbox, carry it on a stick, increase the number of flashes to two, three, five, etc.

For example, I have three external flash units Yongnuo 600 EX-RT (these are copies of Canon 600 EX-RT) and a synchronizer from Yongnuo. And I forgot the last time I put a flash on my camera. I control all the parameters from the synchronizer - the power of each flash - very convenient. Now I would take the system from Godox - there is much more choice.

      • Elena

        Thank you.

  • Anna

I would like to know how she is in terms of pictures at night, or in scenes with poor lighting? 🤔

    • Stas

Depends on optics, shooting mode and conditions. If you raise the ISO above 1600, then not very much, if the tripod + shutter speed, then quite like all the other crops)

  • Valeria

Is it possible to somehow shoot with this camera (Canon EOS 100D) in TimeLapse mode. If possible, how? And what should be purchased for this?

    • Novel

You can try Canon EOS Utility - this requires an included laptop, which will send signals via the USB cable when taking a photo. For a view from the window, it is suitable or there for shooting seed germination, but for outdoor applications, it is clearly not very good.

The EOS 100D has an E3 connector for all kinds of self-timer. The native one is put through an expensive N3-E3 adapter (there for a lace under $ 100 only, plus you need the TC-80N3 intervalometer itself, on which the delay time and the number of frames are set, also around $ 200).

Therefore, it is better to look for a Chinese analogue for your connector. For example Pixel TC-252 with E3 lanyard. This one costs about $ 25 with us.

    • Novel

Actually, connect the device to the camera, insert the batteries into it, set the number of frames and the interval between them and make sure that the camera battery + space on the card is enough for a given number of frames. You can shoot in JPEG for more space. Well, and then glue a bunch of your photos in some Adobe Premiere.

      • Valeria

Roman, is the YouPro MC-292 remote control with E3 connector compatible with aliexpress?

        • Novel

There seems to be an intervalometer, it is also wireless. I think yes. Not a bad thing, my wife needs to take it under 200D.

Roman, thank you very much for your consultation. You are very helpful. I give you a link to this device - https://aliexpress.ru/item/32964279367... And one more question - can this device somehow be adapted to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100M5A Digital Camera?

It was 2022, and Canon 100D is still good even against the backdrop of the M50. I don’t know why I took the M50 in addition, but the only noticeable difference is in the video, but the picture is still the same :) The 100D was an underestimated camera in its time. Well, in fact, the weave and the assembly are nicer than the same M50, and the reliability is more credible, the ergonomics are more thought out, and what is this mirror sound worth ... oh, there were times.
