In this review, I will refer to the Yongnuo YnLens YN85mm F1.8R DF DSM for short. YN 85 / 1.8R... Firmware version of lens used V1.2.0 for 03.08.2021.

Here on the site there is already a review of the lens Yongnuo 85mm 1: 1.8 DF DSM S for cameras with mount Sony E... This review will largely repeat review of the lens for Sony E / FE mount... Main differences between versions ''S'and' R ':

  1. different date of announcement, version 'R' is one year newer
  2. the 'R' version has an 'O' shaped rubber protective seal for bayonetthat didn’t have 'S'versions
  3. version 'S' It has programmable button 'Fn', this button was taken from the 'R' version
  4. the 'R' version has new switch FOCUS / CONTROL / CLICK
  5. the 'R' version has a slightly different design body, there is a dark brown strip on the side of the bayonet, imitating the design Genuine Canon RF Lenses
  6. the 'R' version has a problem with an awkward lens hood. The hood is now fixed more pleasantly
  7. in the 'R' version, the diaphragm works quietly and without lag
  8. the 'R' version focuses a little faster
  9. version 'R' a little more expensive
  10. the 'R' versions are slightly heavier (more metal is used in the body)

In short

YN 85 / 1.8R is the first lens from Ynlens (Yongnuo) for Canon mirrorless cameras with a full-frame sensor and RF mount.

The YN 85 / 1.8R is a short telephoto lens, commonly referred to as the 'classic portrait' focal length. Internal auto focus, quiet and fast focusing step motor. Everything works without problems. Optically not bad, in the center of the frame it is sharp already from F / 1.8 (without any reservations), only perceptible chromatic aberration make themselves felt.

YN 85 / 1.8R - designed to compete with the original Canon Lens RF 85mm F2 MACRO IS STMas well as with the original lens Canon EF 85mm 1: 1.8 USM paired with with adapter EF-> RF... Cost so far significantly higherthan a similar lens from Yongnuo for the Sony E system: Yongnuo 85mm 1: 1.8 DF DSM S and is at the level 400 dollars.

History

The lens was officially announced May 2021 of the year.

Very important: There are two subversions of this lens, which differ only in the inscription on the body. One sub-version is labeled 'YONGNUO 85' (view), the second version, which is shown in this review, is labeled 'YNLENS 85mm'.

YN 85 / 1.8R is first lens from Yongnuo company for Canon full-frame mirrorless system with Canon RF mount.

In July 2021 it was officially announced another lens for Canon RF: Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2R DF DSM.

Very important: YN 85 / 1.8R has nothing to do with lenses Yongnuo 85 / 1.8 for Nikon F mount SLR cameras и Yongnuo 85 / 1.8 for Canon EF mount SLR cameras... YN 85 / 1.8R belongs to the new line of Yongnuo Ynlens lenses and is built on a completely different optical scheme.

In general, YN 85 / 1.8R is an alternative to the original Canon Lens RF 85mm F2 MACRO IS STM... Now (late summer 2021) there are very few high-aperture autofocus lenses with a focal length of 85 mm for Canon RF mount on the market.

Yongnuo YnLens YN85mm F1.8R DF DSM (for Canon RF)

Assembly

The lens came to the review completely new.

The small box contained a warranty card, instructions in Chinese and English, a quality control card, a desiccant, bags, a hood and the lens itself with front and rear covers. The covers are made of dense plastic. In the box, the lens is secured with two durable foam clips.

YN 85 / 1.8R has metal mount. Stated that microprocessor contacts gilded... The focusing ring is wide, rubberized. The lens feels good in the hands. On the side of the rear lens there is a light-cutting hood that prevents excess flare and light scattering.

The weight of the YN 85 / 1.8R is about 380 grams.

On heavily covered diaphragms, the aperture is shaped like an irregular heptagon. The diaphragm consists, as it were, of two pairs of blades, 7 each, located one after the other. Most likely used compound aperture blades or L-shaped petals. This design can be found in some older manual lenses (e.g. Mir-3 3.5 / 65). A discussion of such a diaphragm device can be found here, here и here.

The body has a bayonet mount mark and a mark for quick attachment of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood LH-60T, which must be fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood is quite long. The hood can be set in transport mode with the reverse side, but in this position access to the focusing ring is completely lost.

The lens has a connector on its body USB TYPE C for connection to a computer (see the corresponding section below in the text). The port is closed with a tight rubber plug.

It's important: During intensive shooting, the lens lost contact with the camera a couple of times, the error 'ERR 01' appeared. Turning the camera off and on fixed this issue. I met this failure only during shooting in priority mode excerpts 'TV' (I like to use all four main modes M, AV, TV, P).

Yongnuo YnLens YN85mm F1.8R DF DSM (for Canon RF)

Focusing

For focusing, the YN 85 / 1.8R uses stepper focus motor DSM (Digital Stapping Motor). Auto focus should work with all Canon RF mount cameras.

The focusing speed is high (closer to very high), quite comfortable for work. On camera Canon EOSRP I didn't have much focusing problems. After the lens has lost precise focusing, refocusing is performed very quickly. Focusing on the face and eyes on Canon EOSRP works very well. In general, a bunch Canon EOSRP + YN 85 / 1.8R works almost perfect. Occasionally, during eye / face autofocus, the camera / lens will give a little back focus.

It's important: In difficult shooting conditions, as well as when shooting dynamic scenes, the focusing quality with the YN 85 / 1.8R can be noticeably worse than with similar original lenses, such as Canon Lens RF 85mm F2 MACRO IS STM... Most likely, even in simple shooting conditions, the autofocus tenacity with the YN 85 / 1.8R will very much depend on the camera used. Perhaps over time, new lens firmware will improve the behavior of the YN 85 / 1.8R.

Auto focus very quiet... When shooting a video using autofocus and the built-in microphone in the camera, the resulting video noise from the built-in focusing motor is not audible at all.

Lens uses electronic focus ring... The focusing ring is rubberized, wide. Manual aiming is enough conveniently... The focus ring rotates easily. I did not observe any lag (lag) when changing the direction of rotation. The focus ring makes a faint sound of two plastic parts rubbing during manual focusing.

It's important: in the camera menu Canon EOSRP  you can set the parameter “MF focusing ring sensitivity of RF lenses"

  1. Depends on rotation speed
  2. Depends on the angle of rotation

The function is in the section: 'C. Fn III: Advanced -> 4 Feel. focus. ring. MF vol. RF '. This feature is very useful and I'm glad the Canon RF system has introduced it.

It's important: You can change the direction of rotation of the focusing ring. The function is in the 'C. Fn III: Advanced -> 3 Focus Focus Rotation rings'. It will be useful for those users who are accustomed to different directions of rotation of the focusing ring (for example, when using other systems, such as Nikon F / Z).

On the case there is a focus mode switch MF / AF.

Also the lens has FOCUS / CONTROL / CLICK switch.

  1. In 'FOCUS' mode, the control ring acts as a focusing ring with FTM (Full Time Manual Focusing - constant manual focusing control).
  2. In 'CONTROL' mode, the control ring takes over the functions of an additional control ring inherent in the original CANON RF lenses.
  3. In the 'CLICK' mode, the control ring mimics the 'CONTROL' functions, but at the same time there are characteristic clicks, like the aperture control rings on old manual lenses.

Camera Canon EOSRP allows you to set the following control ring functions in the 'CONTROL' and 'CLICK' modes:

  1. Aperture change (while holding down the metering activation button exposure or without)
  2. Change excerpts (while holding the metering activation button exposure or without)
  3. Setting the ISO sensitivity (while holding down the metering activation button exposure or without)
  4. Compensation exposure (while holding the metering activation button exposure or without)
  5. Do not use

It's important: in 'CLICK' mode, one click does not always allow changing the selected parameter to some minimum value. Sometimes it takes 2 clicks. An unpleasant trifle, but it does not spoil the overall impression of working with the lens.

During auto focus focus ring remains stationary.

The lens has internal focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary during focusing. It is possible to use various filters without any problems.

The closest focusing distance is 80 cm, while the maximum magnification for close-up photography is 1: 7.7, which is the usual value for such a lens.

YN 85 / 1.8R has strong 'Focus Breathing' effect (changing the angle of view during focusing). When focusing towards the MDF, the angle of view decreases. When quickly refocusing from infinity to MDF and back, for example, during video recording, on the display or in EVI there is a characteristic beating / breathing of the picture.

There are no useful marks for focusing distance, depth of field and other things on the lens. Focus distance display function in EVI not available with this lens (Canon EOSRP says that this lens does not support the display of this data).

Focus shift (shift-focus) was not noticed during operation and testing.

Firmware Upgrade

The YN 85 / 1.8R lens barrel has a USB port through which you can update the software (firmware / firmware) of the lens. For YN 85 / 1.8R you need to use utility, which immediately carries a new firmware.

The functionality of the service utility for the YN 85 / 1.8R, which is responsible for working with the lens, is very scarce. You can only view the current firmware version and update it to a new one. I found this utility for YN 85 / 1.8R here и here. There is a utility version only for the latest Windows operating systems.

The lens uses the common USB 2.0 TYPE C port for connection (many mobile phones use this one). The package does not include a USB cable. To connect, I used a USB cable for my android phone and updated the firmware without any problems. The procedure took less than 5 seconds.

A firmware update, most likely, allows you to improve the compatibility of the lens with new cameras, improve the auto focus, eliminates some other errors. Too bad that no way to roll back (restore) an older version of the firmware.

Important: To update the lens firmware (software):

  • Turn off the camera, remove the battery from it, detach the lens
  • Launch the program YN85mm F / 1.8R DF DSM FM UPDATER
  • Attach the lens to the computer using a USB cable. If everything went well, the program will automatically detect the connected lens
  • Click [UPDATE] to start updating. Wait until the end of the update. The [NoNeed] button also updates the firmware, but says that this is not necessary (the latest firmware is already used)
  • Disconnect cable
  • Attach the lens to the camera
  • Insert the battery into the camera
  • Turn on the camera

Image quality

YN 85 / 1.8R handles the sensor easily Canon EOSRP by 26 MP. Optically, this is a good lens, of the obvious shortcomings - only chromatic aberration.

Sharpness

  • good sharpness at an open aperture in the center of the frame, good at the periphery of the image, F / 1.8 is fully 'working'. There is no noticeable drop in sharpness at F / 1.8 even in the far corners of the frame
  • excellent sharpness in the center of the frame after f / 2.8
  • good resolution in the corners of the frame at closed apertures in the region of F / 2.8-F / 8. For some reason, at very closed apertures, the corners of the frame are for some reason heavily clogged with chromatic aberrations and, together with diffraction, they noticeably reduce the sharpness (I rarely see such behavior of the lens)
  • most likely the lens was designed so that it creates the best sharpness at medium and long focusing distances. At especially close focusing distances (in the MDF area), sharpness at F / 1.8 deteriorates

Distortion

  • distortion is moderate, pincushion (usually barrel-shaped in such lenses)
  • the nature of distortion is unified, easily corrected in the editor
  • it is difficult to notice distortion in the pictures

Vignetting

  • vignetting is most pronounced on F / 1.8 and focusing on infinity
  • vignetting is not gradient, but wavy from the center of the frame to the corners
  • vignetting decreases with focus towards MDF
  • vignetting almost disappears at values after f / 5.6

Aberration

  • the lens creates a sufficiently large number of chromatic aberrations, both longitudinal and transverse
  • there is a noticeable frigging (the color of the contrasting areas of confusion is green and purple). Friging is significantly reduced with diaphragm
  • chromatic aberration - the weakest side of the lens

Rest

  • the effect of the rays of the star is not pronounced (14 rays)
  • Blur disks are uneven on tightly covered diaphragms
  • the lens works well in backlight, only in the most difficult conditions can you get glare that spoil the picture
  • the lens does not use aspherical elements, but only ED elements, which helps to avoid concentric circles on blur discs
  • discs of blur closer to the edges of the frame become clipped

So far, there is no profile for this lens in popular RAW converters. Firmware Canon EOSRP does not automatically correct some types of distortion (in fact, everything except diffraction). The camera indicates that it does not have the required data for this lens.

My experience

Acknowledgements: I want to express my special gratitude to the photographer Alexander Bozhkevich (Instagram) who provided a brand new camera Canon EOSRP (zero mileage) to create this overview.

YN 85 / 1.8R is a very worthy solution. If the price for this lens is around $ 300, I will boldly recommend it for purchase. But the version for cameras with a Sony E mount costs about the same.

I shot about 85-1.8 thousand frames on the YN 3 / 4R and was completely satisfied with the capabilities of the lens.

Important: YN 85 / 1.8R has several times fewer minor and not particularly minor problems than Yongnuo 85 / 1.8 for Nikon F mount SLR cameras и Yongnuo 85 / 1.8 for Canon EF mount SLR cameras... In this case, everything is much better with the YN 85 / 1.8R, and the YN 85 / 1.8R itself has nothing to do with similar lenses from Yongnuo for SLR cameras. Once again, since this really matters: this YN 85 / 1.8R lens and the YN DSLR lenses are completely different lenses.

YN 85 / 1.8R - great for portraits, it can serve as a good alternative to other similar solutions. The image quality is generally good and even good. So far, the price is holding at the level 400 dollars, which forces a balanced decision before buying the YN 85 / 1.8R.

10 main advantages:

  1. compact size (lens with a short flange for mirrorless cameras)
  2. good build, metal bayonet, bayonet hood included
  3. rubber mount seal
  4. focusing stepping motor, fast and quiet
  5. internal focusing, fixed focus ring during auto focus
  6. electronic focusing ring, continuous manual focus control, AF / MF switch
  7. FOCUS / CONTROL / CLICK switch for programming the functions of the control / focus ring
  8. USB port for firmware upgrade
  9. one low-dispersion element in the optical scheme and 1 element with an ultra-high refractive index
  10. good sharpness in the center of the frame already from F / 1.8 (really not causing any questions), pleasant bokeh, weak drop in sharpness in the corners and edges of the frame in the range of F / 1.8-F / 8

10 main disadvantages:

  1. on heavily covered apertures, the aperture has the shape of an irregular heptagon
  2. there are no additional tags (depth of field, focusing distance, etc.)
  3. no built-in image stabilizer (for example, it has Canon Lens RF 85mm F2 MACRO IS STM)
  4. software options for working with the lens via the USB port are very limited
  5. version Yongnuo 85 / 1.8 DF DSM S under the Sony E / FE had an additional programmable button, which was removed from the version for Canon RF
  6. lack of data about the lens in modern cameras and converters, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of distortion
  7. in rare cases, the lens loses contact with the camera
  8. very strong Focus Breathing effect
  9. tangible chromatic aberration
  10. moderate pincushion distortion and vignetting

  • B. R. P.

Thanks for the review, interesting bokeh in some of the photos. The portraits look pretty decent, the Chinese are increasing the quality.

  • Igor

    Thanks for the review!

  • Human

It would be interesting to see a comparison with the old Yongnuo 85mm on the EF. In terms of cost, it still comes out almost 4-5 times less, provided that you already have an adapter ..

    • Arkady Shapoval

As I pointed out in the review - the old one under EF and the new one under RF is heaven and earth

  • Maksim

Hello, thanks for the review. How does it compare to the ef 85 1.8?

    • Arkady Shapoval

the image is better, there may be questions about af

  • i is glorious

The nature of the image is reminiscent of old “film” portraits, such as Minolta 85 / 1,4 G. But, of course, in the sharpness zone, the Chinese are more cheerful.

  • Human

I checked, at the moment the firmware archive contains versions for both windows and mac
