Nikon D700 review

The Nikon D700 is a full format Nikon FX camera and is Nikon's second full format DSLR camera. The camera was introduced in the summer of 2007 and is now the cheapest full frame from Nikon (unless, of course, film cameras) Most photographers attribute the Nikon D700 to reportage cameras.

Legendary Nikon D700 with MB-D10 booster and Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor (MKIII) lens

Legendary Nikon D700 with booster MB-D10 and lens Nikon 50mm 1: 1.8D AF Nikkor (MKIII)

I have been using Nikon D700 for a little over 3 years, during which time I have changed several of these cameras.

Nikon D700 is a professional camera, it has no automatic modes shooting. This camera is designed for people who know the basic skills of working with photographic equipment and for whom it will not be difficult to work in semi-automatic or manual modes P, A, S, M.

Nikon D700 - heavy, dustproof and waterproof chamber with uncompromising metal alloy housing. But trouble, trouble, over time, the gum on the handle and throughout the camera body swell, peel off, and badly spoil the nerves. In addition, the lateral rubber plug for different connectors after swelling of the rubber does not want to close and constantly hangs. On my last Nikon D700, I just cut off this stub. Hanging gum and dummy plugs for PC-sync under studio light and contacts for the remote control. You can replace the rubber bands in the service center, but they take a lot of money for this pleasure, and the rubber bands come from China for quite a long time.

My Nikon D700 cameras are badly worn out from fighting, which is why metal began to appear under their black paint. Due to its heavy weight, the Nikon D700 distributes weight well with heavy lenses like the 70-200 / 2.8. It is best to use a Nikon D700 with a battery grip.

We accelerate the Nikon D700 to the cherished 8 fps

In normal mode, the Nikon D700 can shoot at a speed of 5 fps (with any image quality settings, color depth and compression level RAW) Using battery pack MB-D10 or network adapter EH-5a / EH-5, the speed can grow up to 8 fps. But, to make the camera shoot at a speed of 8 fps, one MB-D10 not enough. You need to use a special holder MS-D10 with 8 AA cells (batteries or rechargeable batteries). The MS-D10 holder is supplied with MB-D10. Also, 8 fps can be achieved using a more capacious battery. EN-EL4 (from cameras Nikon D2h, D2hs, D2x, D2xs) Or EN-EL4a (from cameras Nikon D3s, D3, D3x), but this requires the optional BL-3 cover (which is not included with the MB-D10). In addition, if you buy a battery EN-EL4 or EN-EL4a, you will have to additionally buy and charge Nikon MH-21 / Nikon MH-22 for it. If in MB-D10 use a regular standard battery EN-EL3e, then the burst speed will not change. Battery pack MB-D10 equally suitable for D300, D300S and D700.

Recently, I have been using Nikon D700 with a booster MB-D10 and one EN-EL3e battery. I want to note that the booster (battery pack / portrait grip) MB-D10 performed not logically. Only one battery is inserted into the booster, the second is inserted into the battery compartment of the camera itself. As a result, to use the camera with two batteries, you need to remove the booster from the camera, insert the battery into it and reinstall the booster. I think this method is stupid, impractical and in general, after the bustare from Nikon D200, such illogical behavior is just a mockery of the photographer.

Unpleasant feature of batteries No. 1

At low temperatures (not necessarily freezing), the camera does not fully release the shutter, and an error message 'Err' appears on the display. To resume camera functionality, just press the shutter button again, after which it will perform a full cycle and you can continue shooting. This behavior in cold weather is most likely due to a drop in battery capacity, which is not enough power for a full shutter release cycle. The repairmen say that diaphragm drummer absorbs a lot of energy and this problem can be observed with many Nikon cameras. This feature is also observed when working with a booster. In any case, in cameras of this level I would like not to encounter such unpleasant features. I get around this shortcoming with 'warmed up' batteries, of which I have 6 spare pieces.

Unpleasant feature of batteries No. 2

When using non-native (Chinese counterparts) batteries with a battery pack, the camera often reports that the battery is completely discharged. At the same time, if you install it in the main battery slot, which is located in the camera, then everything will work fine.

Trouble number 3

With the active use of external flashes, the hot shoe of the Nikon D700 camera breaks, after which the flash begins to behave similarly poltergeist. Even if you put the camera on a table or a tripod, install any flash, for example, the native Nikon SB-910, the flash can turn on any of its functions on its own. Usually a malfunction manifests itself in the fact that the camera stops “seeing” the flash, or blocks the shutter release, the flash can spontaneously give any number of pulses of any power (you can burn your eyes), the flash focusing grid is activated, etc. If you move the flash in the hot shoe a little, the problem goes away for a few seconds. Clamping the metal contacts of the hot shoe only solves the problem for a while. It is treated by replacing the shoe.

The camera has a great small monochrome displayon which all the basic settings are available. I write small because, compared to Nikon D200, D300, D300s the monochrome display has decreased, since the Nikon D700 uses a large pentaprism, which pushed and reduced the secondary display. The monochrome display has a pleasant green backlight, which is turned on using the camera's power lever. The monochrome display saves battery power and simplifies camera setup and shooting.

The main display of the Nikon D700 at 920.000 points, the same as that of the cameras Nikon D90, D300, D300s, D7000, D3, D3s, D3x. The display is nice and has a protective cover that I never take off. You can adjust the brightness of the display for yourself.

Nikon D700 uses big and fast cards CF. My Nikon D700 works with a 32GB 400x card without any problems.
Nikon D700 is not big at all frame buffer. Depending on the type and format of the image, the buffer can hold a maximum 18 RAW shots (at conventional compression, 12 bit RAW), 15 shots of Tiff, 24JPEG L FINE (size priority). I almost never saw information in reviews about the fact that some functions reduce the number of frames in the buffer. Because, attention: if you enable ADL, noise reduction at slow shutter speeds and high ISOs, frame buffer reduced to 6 shots - this is a very, very bad indicator. But, even if you take the maximum - 18 RAW files with disabled additional settings to improve images, this is 3 frames less than in the ancient professional Nikon D200.

Given that the maximum shooting speed is 8 fps, with the Nikon D700 you can shoot series no longer than 3 seconds. So, the Nikon D700 is not quite suitable for serious reporting. Frame buffer - one of the main indicators of camera performance and speed. Well, if it is very important to shoot in series in RAW, then in DX mode the buffer can hold as much as 26 frames (with normal compression and 12-bit color depth).

Nikon D700 camera has everything 12.1 effective megapixels... This is small enough for a full frame camera. A small number of megapixels increases the diffraction threshold. CMOS sensor type, Nikon D700 is the first full frame matrix from Nikon, because it is not the most ideal. In a number of characteristics, the D700 is inferior even to amateur cameras. Nikon D7000, D5100... Full frame is not a panacea for image quality. In general, I do not recommend chasing the number of megapixels, for more details in my article Battle of Megapixels.

Nikon D700 has built-in focus motorthat allows you to automatically focus with AF optics, for example, with  Nikon 50mm F1.8DNikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor and other AF lenses.
For measuring exposure thrown out 3D Color Matrix Metering II with 1005 zones. The camera works wonderfully even with old AI-S, Pre-ai lenses. In principle, froze exposure available and tin can instead of lens, and even without a lens at all. The camera can memorize 10 manual lenses. I love to use Nikon D700 with Soviet lenses, since the camera has an electronic rangefinder (arrows near the green dot, which suggest which direction to rotate the focus ring on manual lenses).

Full-length portrait on Nikon D700

Full-length portrait on Nikon D700

At the camera 51 focus points, 15 of which are cruciform. After using the camera for a long time, I do not feel the difference between cross-shaped and regular focus points at all. A serious focusing drawback is the fact that all points are placed only on the DX area of the camera - you cannot focus at the edges of the frame. Focus module MultiCAM 3500FX use older cameras Nikon D3, D3s, D3x.

The camera has a main ISO range from 200 to 6400 and an expanded from 100 (1) to 25.600 (hi 2). It's a shame that the Nikon D700 does not have a true ISO 100. The shortest excerpt the camera is 1 \ 8000c. Funny but one of the first Nikon D1h could shoot at 1 \ 16.000. Short excerpt and minimum ISO are very important when using fast lenses.

Nikon D700 can control flash according to the protocol Nikon CLS. Funny but before the release Nikon D800 (D800E) The XNUMX was the only full-frame camera with built-in flash. Yes, that's right, in Nikon D3, D3s, D3x, D4, D4s, Df there is no flash at all, therefore, the SU-800 module is recommended for flagship cameras. You can read how to control flashes in the section about Nikon CLS. Many do not respect the built-in flash frog, but in skillful hands it turns into an ideal flash synchronization device. Of course, the Nikon D700 has fast flash synchronization and can shoot in FP mode with flash for at least 1/8000 s, in more detail in the section on flash in the afternoon.

The battery on the camera is quite powerful, without a flash it easily fulfills 1000-1500 shots. The battery is completely identical to Nikon D80, D90, D200, D300, D300s and compatible with D100, D70, D70s, D50 (but not vice versa).

Nikon D700 behaves well in the studio

Nikon D700 behaves well in the studio

A thousand and one useful things: bracketing, control HA in JPEG, vignetting control, virtual horizon, Live View, viewing depth of field, multiple exposure, matrix cleaning, interval shooting, etc. If you have questions about small things, write in the comments, I will try to answer quickly.

If you take the matrix and the stuffing from the flagship camera Nikon D3, and shove it into the case from Nikon D300 (Nikon D300s), we get the Nikon D700.

With Nikon D700 and a cheap fifty dollars, you can squeeze a lot

With Nikon D700 and a cheap fifty dollars, you can squeeze a lot

About Nikon D700 and Nikon D3, I highlight the main differences in bold.

  1. Different level... Nikon D700 is professional and Nikon D3 - flagship professional camera. In any case, Nikon D3 is positioned for a different circle of photographers.
  2. Different body. And therefore, Nikon D3 has better ergonomics of management, more capacious battery.
  3. Nikon D700 has dust cleaning matrixand the Nikon D3 doesn't have one.
  4. Nikon D700 takes off 1 f slowerthan Nikon D3
  5. Nikon D700 has another pentaprism with less coverage, covering only 95% of the picture.
  6. Nikon D700 only one slot for memory cardsThe Nikon D3 has two. Professionals value this feature in the Nikon D3 very highly.
  7. Funny but Nikon D3 does not have a built-in flash, and the Nikon D700 has, from here comes up a whole series of Nikon D700 work options with Nikon CLS with groups of flashes. I really appreciate this feature.
  8. Different shutter. Nikon D700 will last two times less than Nikon D3
  9. Various little things in the menu settings, etc.

Speaking on the case, I did not use Nikon D3, but, given that the cameras have the same matrix and the same focusing system, the image quality and functionality are very close. Now both cameras are outdated, as Nikon D3s, D4, D4s, D5 are much better than these two old ladies.

I note that Nikon D600 and Nikon D700 - these are cameras of different levels, despite the fact that the D700 is much older Nikon D600, but still its 'charm' is noticeably better than the 600. In choise Nikon D800, D700, D600 I would adhere to this sequence, leaving the budget: Nikon D810 -> Nikon D800E -> Nikon D800 -> Nikon D750 -> Nikon DF -> Nikon D610 -> Nikon D600 -> Nikon D700. Nikon 810a will be chosen only by experts in their field.

Interesting options for setting up and managing the Nikon D700:

  1. You can set the center selector button to view captured images at a specific magnification. Roughly speaking, when viewing a picture, with one press of the central button of the selector (joystick), you can get an increase in any area of the picture. This is very useful for checking sharpness. Moreover, the increase is done at the focus point (or group of points), according to which the picture was taken.
  2. I adjust the FN button for auto ISO controls. This is not so easy to do, which is the strong minus of the camera. To do this, add the item “Auto. management feels. ISO ”, and in the function key programming menu select“ Call. top. item MY MENU ”. The button is configured via the “INFO” menu.
  3. I program the preview button to select the manual lens. Moreover, it is very inconvenient that you can only select the lens number with the specified parameters. On my Nikon D200 with this setting, it was also possible to change the parameters of the lens, which is very useful when using lenses with manual aperture controls and zoom lenses. The button is configured via the “INFO” menu.
  4. I program the AE-L / AF-L button for the 'Live View' mode, after which the Live View mode becomes more familiar for the convenience of switching on, for example, as on Nikon D90. By the way Auto focus in Live View is only available in AF-S mode and only with the AF-ON button and only when 'tripod' mode is selected.
  5. I turn off the audible focus alert, which greatly disturbs and annoys some people when shooting, for example in церкви.
  6. In the playback menu, you can configure the camera so that the focus points that participated in focusing (on which the subject was focused) are displayed in the image when viewing images. This is done through the "Display Mode" submenu.
  7. Focus mode AF-C set to shutter priority, and AF-S to focus priority. You can find useful information on working with these modes here.
  8. All other settings (and previous ones too) can be customized to taste and needs. Do not forget that the Nikon D700 has several banks of settings that you can save and change. More details about this here.

Personal experience:

Nikon D700 is a very good camera. I work as a photographer and really appreciate her 51 point focus, quick response. It's funny, but all 51 focus points are in the DX area of the image, it seems that the Nikon D700 is not Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FXand Nikon Multi-CAM 3500DX from Nikon D300 (details here) Also, exposure meters Nikon D700 is afraid of flare. For example, when shooting in a church, if a small light source in the form of a candle enters the frame, matrix and centrally weighted measurements take a strongly underexposed frame. The dynamic range of the camera is small, Nikon D7000 it is much higher, but do not blame the old Nikon D700, because it is the first full frame matrix from Nikon. Also, the Nikon D700 is one of the few cameras that has a useful Live View mode and at the same time does not need to overpay for the video function. When viewing an image in Live View, it is very slow. For example, Live View at Nikon D90 much better "understands", especially when enlarging an area of the image. Often, Nikon D700 is the first FF camera for photographers, and whether it's worth switching to full frame at all - everyone must decide for himself, perhaps my article will help with this. 'Crop identification'. Regarding the matrix noise: yes, Nikon D700 bypasses any Nikon DX camera in terms of noise, there is nowhere to hide the cat in the bag. Regarding the recommendation of lenses for use: it all depends on the needs and tasks of the photographer.

D700 and skinton

Some do not like the way the camera conveys skin color (skin tone). Indeed, sometimes you can seriously complain about this. But for the Nikon D700 (and also for Nikon D300, D300s, D3, D3s and D3x) there is one unusual solution - to shoot in RAW, which then needs to be 'developed' using Nikon ViewNX (Nikon ViewNX-I) or CaptureNX (CaptureNX-D), while making sure to select Picture Control (Picture Control Mode) 'M1 D2Xmode1 ', or 'M2 D2Xmode2', 'M3 D2Xmode3' to your liking. These are special picture management sets that mimic the operation of cameras. Nikon D2x и D2xs... Try it, the result is sometimes very, very pleasantly surprised. So, the 'M1 D2Xmode1' is best for portrait photography.

For those who do not want to bother with RAW files: these same image management modes can be installed right into the camera by downloading them on the official website here to register:.

On the net you can find the same profiles for Lighroom and ACR ( link), after which working with RAW files can turn into a pleasure. Also, I advise you to look into my note about RAW converters.

Live, die and live again!

A little addition: after 150.000 shots at one of the weddings, I refused camera mirror... The cause of the breakdown - the mirror lever broke, the repair at the official service center in Kiev took over 1 month and stood at around $ 650, as they explained, in the D700 all the mirror, shutter and diaphragm mechanisms are connected, so the entire front mirror bay had to be changed ... After the repair, the frame counter showed 10 pictures.

Mirror sticking

Another small addition: I got another Nikon D700 camera, I bought it second-hand with a range of about 10.000 frames. At 330.000 frames, problems started with mirror sticking.

Nikon D700 - Nikon's most affordable full-frame digital SLR camera.

I do not recommend to beginners - it is heavy and requires an understanding of photography techniques.

I do not recommend to professionals - the potential of other full-size cameras will last for many years to come.

Elder Nikon D700 is interesting only for the price and full frame. I recommend Nikon D700 for upgrade after old DX cameras as budget option FX camera.

Nikon D700 is a long-running legend.

Nikon D700 is one of Nikon's most balanced cameras. Until now (in the summer of 2016) there is no full replacement for her. Nikon D750 - not at all. It is Nikon D700, not Nikon D300, that can be considered a reduced copy of the TOP Nikon D3.

Have questions about Nikon D700? Ask them in the comments, I have been using this model for a very long time and I know a lot about it.

    Good afternoon Arkady and experts!
The other day I bought a 700-ku with 24-70 2.8 (not the vr version!), Mb-d10 with a range of five “thousand” and everything is in perfect condition - new. I took 1600 € in Germany. This is for price statistics.
On mb-d10 such a glitch was observed: there were new energizer, after about 50 shots the camera did not recognize the LR3 charge when turned on .... I thought PPC ... (
But no! We take out the lyon and turn on the carcass only from mb-d10 with energizer - the carcass squeaks into the displays “charge tyutu, walk Vasya ...” although the charge is 11.6 Volts ... (
In short, new, the following AA batteries are inserted in the same system - we turn on only on mb-d10 without lion. The carcass writes "charge ok, Boss fight!"
We remove mb-d10, insert the lyon, then wind up mb-d10 and we again have 8k / s!
I tried 100% battery selection priority settings. If, in case of glitches, you simply replace the AA batteries, then the carcass does not sag ... .. hangs only after the start without a lyon!
The conclusion is this: a capricious lady, I turn to energy, people write no problem.
And so, while the experience is sparse, I read the manual, the glass is awesome, the flu is dangerously small at 2.8!

Arkady, thank you very much for your work! Good luck)

  • AV

Dear Arkady! I decided to buy a Nikon D700, I am studying your review of this camera with great interest.
It seems everything is clear and understandable, but there is one point ... A careful look at your photos to the article shows a strong diffuse light when shooting in the back or
frame of the Sun. Specifically, 6 out of 15 photos (40%) contain an unacceptable in my opinion
light scattering. I have a question: is it a poor blackening of the D700 or high light scattering in optics?
    Sincerely, A.V.

    • Taras

This is the work of optics in the backlight. Not related to the camera

  • Alexey

    Good day.

By the will of fate, I ended up in Canada and there are a lot of announcements about the sale of simisotki, as described, in excellent condition (there are ads with mileage up to 10K on the native shutter) for reasonable money (about 40k if converted into rubles). There are a year cheaper, but with mileage (40 + k).

    I have a d90 with a set of FF glass (20mm 1.8g, 35 2.0d, 50 1.4g, 85 1.8d, 80-200 2.8 mk3) and a sb900 puff and I am a passionate photography enthusiast who wants to go to full frame.

In general, I have been tormented by choice for more than one month.
    1) is it worth buying an old man D700? In it, the weight is a little scaring, and sometimes they complain about colors. On the other hand, this reliable friend will serve me more than one year, and I will understand if I need a more expensive FF, because In many cases, the D90 is enough for me (but I dream of a more stable autofocus, higher ISO, and try the glass on FF)
    2) or, being an amateur, is it better to go for a gimmick and buy a D750, which is 2-3 times more expensive?
    3) or, wait for this summer, where Nikon is very likely to present something, which in turn will push prices down.
    4) just upgrade the crop fresher (for example 7200 or find a used five hundred with an eye on the birds and animals, which are plentiful in Canada)
    5) do not powder yourself and your brains, because I already have everything necessary for an amateur, and all these marketing things, such as high ISO or fast AF, are from the crafty one.

    That suggest?

Thank you for your attention and advice.

    • Pastor

The price is quite adequate for yourself, if you have the experience of checking used carcasses, then buy a camera that you can use for more than one year without any problems.
      Now the points
“1) Should you buy the old D700? The weight is a little frightening in it, and sometimes they complain about the colors. On the other hand, this most reliable friend will serve me for more than one year, and I will understand whether I need a more expensive FF, because in many cases, the D90 is enough for me (but I dream of more stable autofocus, higher ISO, and try glass on FF) ”
There are also many complaints about the colors of the d90, probably even more than the d700. Do colors d90 scare you? Since you have been using it for so long, apparently not. Then the colors d700 will suit you. The weight must be said to be quite similar to itself, by and large, with the same 80-200 d700 it will be even more comfortable to hold in your hands. And in general, as Boris Razva said: “Weight is reliability. Even if it doesn't fire, you can always hit you in the head. " The autofocus of the d700 is much better than the d90, the working iso are higher, so everything you want will appear.
"2) or, being an amateur, is it better to skip around the bottom of the barrel and buy the D750, which is 2-3 times more expensive?" Well, if the bottom ends are not empty and spending on d750 does not scare, then it is better in terms of the totality of possibilities. Let it not be so protected, but the rotary screen, higher working ISO and DD, many other advantages. Only now no one bothers to shoot at d700 and if something goes wrong sell for the same money and take d750. This will not work with the d750 itself - buying a new one at the same price will not sell it.
"3) or, wait for this summer, where Nikon is likely to present something, which in turn will push prices down." Here they usually say that it is better to wait 20 years and buy a quantum tachyon laser-telescopic multicam :) If without sarcasm, then why wait for something, about which there is no special data, when you can shoot now. Think, 10 years ago, the capabilities of the d700 seemed fantastic, and serious pros dreamed of such a camera. And they filmed it later giving a gorgeous result.
"4) just make an upgrade to a fresher crop (for example, 7200 or find a used five hundred with an eye on birds and animals, which abound in Canada)"
Well, here again it is impossible to say unequivocally no. The d7200 has many advantages, and the d500 is absolutely steep to the point of incredible. If birds make up a significant part of your photo diet, then d500 will obviously be very relevant. Iso workers at five hundred are slightly lower, but in general, noticeably higher than d90. Well, autofocus is better than the d90 and d700 combined. But you won't be able to try your glasses on ff. And reduce the flu too. If this does not scare you - look for d500 and enjoy the best reportage crop of our time.
"5) do not powder yourself and your brains, because I already have everything necessary for an amateur, and all these marketing things, such as high ISO or fast AF, are from the crafty one." You can look at the question like that, but still good high ISOs give more room. If from 40d I am afraid to go out after sunset to shoot without puff, then with 5dm3 this is not a problem. And that means I have more subjects and opportunities to shoot. In addition, we usually work during the day, and only in the evening a timid amateur photographer goes hunting. If you have high workers, you can hunt longer and have more production :)
The conclusion is simple - decide to take ff or crop. If you are ready for ff, then take d700, which you can easily refuse without losing money and buy something else. Well, in any case, even if later you decide to stay on the crop, you yourself will know what ff is and why it personally does not suit you and is not needed. And having bought a crop it may well continue to torment the thought - “but it would be ff!”.

      • Alexey

"If you have experience in checking used carcasses"
Unfortunately, there is no experience in buying carcasses (I even bought the D90 7 years ago, but it was almost with zero mileage), but I used to buy all of these lenses. Not one article about buying used I read the technique, I hope that my knowledge and intuition will not let me down.
I know that for the D700 the shoe is extremely necessary to check, there are still complaints about the card slots, well, the general functions (burst shooting, dust checking by taking pictures of the sky with a closed aperture, standing puff, different modes) and appearance (wear of the bayonet mount, housing, rubber bands connectors, etc.). In general, they say that this is an incredibly reliable camera, which is quite difficult to get rid of. AK-47 in the world of photography. Judging by the reviews, Turetsky’s speech about Boris Razor can be adapted:
“Nikon d700, sharp as a sickle in the balls, and hard as a hammer. Live coat of arms of Nikona. They say that this bastard cannot be killed at all. " And it attracts in its own way :).

“Do colors d90 scare you a lot? If you use it for so long, apparently not. Then the colors of d700 will suit you. "
There are, of course, d90 pens, but if the camera doesn’t mess with the BB and the color setting is appropriate for the plot, D-lighting and good lenses are used, then the colors are fine, but if something is wrong, almost everything from the above rule in Cupture NX. That DD is sometimes not enough, and here with the transition to d700 I won’t win much. For DD you need a fresher camera.

“Weight is reliability. Even if it doesn't shoot, you can always hit in the head. "
        I have 80-200 for this case. :)

“Only now, no one bothers to shoot at d700 and if something goes wrong, sell for the same money and take d750. With the d750 itself, this will not work - buying a new one at the same price will not sell it. "
This scares me off in the d750. It’s not even that the family budget will dare to disturb the purchase of the d750, but that it is not a very liquid (and, in the case of used, more risky) purchase. And my mind does not see a 2-3x difference in quality between the d750 and d700 (although I understand that the d750 is a bomb device), but the price differs by so much.

"They usually say here that it is better to wait 20 years and buy a quantum tachyon laser telescopic multicamera"
        : D exactly, exactly .. and a 12-600mm f1.2 lens weighing 200 grams in addition.
But seriously, you are right. Imagine, even if some D900 comes out with sky-high performance characteristics this summer, then a lot of water will leak away until it goes on sale, until it gets reviews, 3-5 months after the detection of sores (and unfortunately you will find them in almost all new ones) Nikon cameras). Oh yes, the price will most likely be starship too.

“Besides, we usually work during the day, and it is only in the evening that the timid amateur photographer goes hunting.”
:) There are still rare and short-term seasonal migrations to warm regions in search of photo prey.

“And having bought a crop it may well continue to torment the thought -“ but it would be ff! ”
If this thought is still tormenting, then it is guaranteed and with d500 will not cease to torment. Only hiding can be for a year or two.

@ Pastor, thank you so much for the good advice and your time. You helped me decide and deal with my torment of choice.

        • Pastor

Thank you for your interesting answer :) In general, if I were you, I would take a reinforced concrete d700 - and it is not so expensive for the budget, and in terms of its merits, it is good. On dd, if you believe dho d90 is even slightly ahead, but my brief acquaintance with both cameras showed the opposite result, it seemed to me that d700 dd is wider. In any case, there were no problems with dd like d80 / d70s.
In general, good luck in the final selection and purchase. Apparently, you already know how to choose, so there should be no problems.

          • Taras

DD at D700 is significantly higher.

            • Pastor

              d90 - 12.5, d700 - 12.2. If you have other dimensions, I'll take a look.

          • Alexey

            Good day.

I will break the harmful tradition that is very popular today on these Internet: ask on the forums, get advice, and the abyss forever.

In general, I found at a local flea market a very tasty (and therefore extremely hot) offer on d700, for only 700 $ CAD (a little less than 30 tr).
Excellent condition, mileage of only 12000, visually everything is fine (there are only a couple of external scratches), with a native baht. unit, but the kit is slightly incomplete (there is only a holder for AA batteries), and there were not enough small things, like a belt and plugs. The seller turned out to be Russian, and therefore gave me priority over other buyers. For which many thanks to him.

I have not decided yet whether to buy an MS-D10EN holder for my batteries in baht. unit or maybe, if you do not shoot 2 thousand frames per day, then it is not needed. In my opinion, my baht block with eight AA turns the D700 into an AK-47 :) I managed to check it on hockey. 8 c.p. it is impressive.

Already mastered the main instructions and technical booklet for d3 according to the recommendations of the shooting. The number of possible settings is over the top and I am aware that it will take more than one month of practice to become related to the camera.

Now about the camera. At first I wanted to write another comparison with the D90 (if it is appropriate at all), and then I decided that the pros and cons are already known to everyone and decided not to clog the air.

For future owners of D700 I recommend the links:
            http://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/dslr/D3ProTechnicalGuide.pdf
            - a short technical booklet for d3 on shooting recommendations
https://nikonimglib.com/opc/ - download additional Picture Controls to the camera.

Pastor, special thanks to you for your time and advice.

    • Peter Sh.

Still, I would recommend the D610 / D600. Used it will cost not much more.

      • Alexey

The D600 is repelled by a popular problem with oil on the matrix. But the D610 is not even a bad option at the price of used ones. it didn’t go far from the D700 in the market (there are ads for six hundred with mileage up to 10k for 55-60 tr)
The agony of choice continues. You need to determine for yourself that the matrix is much more important for me, less weight and dimensions in the wonderful D610 or unsurpassed reliability, more accurate AF, pro control, compact slots, unpretentiousness to lenses, lower price, in the legendary d700.

@Peter S., thanks a lot for the recommendation.

        • Alexey

With oil, this is not a problem if it appears - free replacement of the shutter for 610 and cleaning the matrix in the service station.

        • Peter Sh.

Alexei, all the advantages of the D700 you listed are needed only when you shoot a lot, in different conditions and often. Otherwise, this camera will make you a burden.

As for the D600, they have all been fixed for free for a long time. Nevermind.

  • Alexander

hello! as recently became the owner of the used Nikon d700 camera, I will not argue with you about the advantages and disadvantages of this camera. The ideal thing is the one that has not been invented yet! A matrix with 12mp. on the contrary, I consider it a big plus of this camera. The d750 is like a toy for me. Alas, but when the salary and prices do not allow me to buy a new device, the secondary market remains. I have a Nikon D7000 crop, which I will never change to 7100 or 7200. the crop matrix is overloaded with megapixels, it’s evil! so I think the d700 will still work for more than one year. This camera has only one common problem so far, this is a slide for an external flash. why there was only a problem with flash on this model. on a camera that used to be at work, the flash lives its own life. and how to solve this problem him, for many of the spacecraft is cleared taynoy.no but this camera in the estates, you can shoot without the flash.
In general, I appreciated this device! Yes, and the assembly is made in Japan, and this is also a quality guarantee!

  • Dmitriy

I don’t know guys !!! I bought my first DSLR at the end of 2011, the Nikon D3100, in 2016 I bought the Nikon D610 and horror ((The camera itself is good but FOCUS! It's just a nightmare. Not only are all the points dumb in the center, but you can focus only on the central cruciform I have fast fixes Nikon 14-24 / 2.8, Nikon 35 / 1.4G and Sigma85 / 1.4 ART. So the extreme points are soaping! There were more than enough surprises on the open iris diaphragm. Always the extreme points were not stable, so I tried I didn’t use them. I wore them in the SC for adjustment, they assured that everything was fine. But I see this otstoy with soap. e spat, and sold the camera .Radi interest came to Avitus on the secondary view of the leaders of the past and saw an advertisement for the sale of Nikon D3 has just laid out! Verdict: I'll play with D3 for sale, report and buy Nikon D810. Like it or not, a lot of things do not suit me in D3 ((ISO 200, resolution 12MP + color! • Arkady Shapoval

      1. There is ISO lo1 equivalent to ISO 100, do not distinguish in quality.
      2. Shutter speed 1/8000, lower only for Nikon D1 / h / x
      3. The color is decided - the profile is set from d2x, which Nikon recommends for models d3, d700, d3s, d300, d300s (this is indicated in this review).

      • Dmitriy

Of course, I know for the expansion equivalent to ISO 100. Compared - really the difference is not visible. But ISO 100 is also not enough for me ((50 would be just wonderful !! I have nothing against for the shortest shutter speed. 1/8000 is a good result. I don't want to take the d750 either, because I know that I, too) ISO 50 and 1/4000 are not enough, so only d810 (where ISO expands to 32 + 1/8000 sec.) But I honestly did not know about the color. Right now I’ll go twist and test))

      • Dmitriy

The first photo was taken as is Recorded Settings, only the size was reduced. The second profile is D2XMODE1, the third photo profile is D2XMODE3. I honestly admit the first photo taken as is I like more))

    Good day to all )
Who will tell you how to solve byaku
the number of remaining frames for the existing flash drive - that with lossless compression, that with compression - the same thing. For example, on a 32GB card it shows 1,2k pictures. Snapshots weigh 14 MB and 25 MB, respectively. In theory, there should be 2.2k pictures)
Firmware version A1.04 B1.03 (updated to the latest with A1.02 B1.02)

    • Michael

This is kind of the norm. Such a byak at all. The camera always counts images without compression.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is the norm. If there is a complex picture, then it will not be able to squeeze, theoretically, if each pixel has different parameters, then even with compression it will be 25 MB, and therefore it is always considered by the largest volume.

      • Oleg

Good day . I want to get advice, you, as a professional, should change d7000 to d700. Engaged in amateur photography (weight does not scare).
        Thank you.

    • Vitya

      Thanks to everyone for answering!
Conducted an experiment, according to which the camera shoots the estimated number of frames. I threw a part of the wedding on the map, left places on the map for 5 photos in RAW. The camera shoots and after a couple of frames, for example, returns the counter back one frame. I have two cards - for 32 and 64 GB - errors of more than 3 thousand frames somehow do not fit into my head with the current development of computing power and the software component of the camera even in 2008. We'll have to put up with this absurdity beyond the strength of Nikon's programmers. I would even say - this should be included in the article as "nuisance No. 4"
By the way, the trouble No. 3 described in the article according to unconfirmed data is treated by the return of a relaxed spring-loaded contact in a hot shoe.

      • Vitya

Sorry, so I wrote - whatever you want, understand it)
        I mean -
“Conducted an experiment according to which the camera shoots the number of frames according to my calculations based on an average RAW of 14 MB”

        • Denis

insignificant flaw. the car also roughly shows how many kilometers the fuel remains in the tank. no one drives until the fuel runs out completely, just as I see no reason to hammer the card to the eyeballs

  • Nikita

and where did the comments go?

  • Koba

I know that after expressing one thought about the wrong flesh colors from Nikon's cameras, they will curse me, but there is one thought: in my opinion Nikon sharpened his kmer to match the color of the faces of Asian representatives, and Kenon - to match the Europeans. See how beautifully the faces of Africans, Chinese, Mongols, Filipinos are captured from Nikon cameras. Siv McCurry still uses Nikon in his work and in most cases he shoots people with dark skin. When writing about flesh colors, this should be borne in mind - flesh colors of representatives of what race? I think that Pentax is also sharpening its cameras primarily for the Asian market. This thought came to me after I was shooting the same people with different cameras for one day - Pentax K-01, Nikon D700, Canon 5D3 and Sigma SD14 (I also have this one, my own). So then, during processing, I suddenly caught myself that just from the canon the colors of the familiar Chinese suddenly turned pink and became a little lighter than usual, and all the other cameras gave out the colors of the faces exactly, that is, with a yellow-brownish tint, on which Europeans usually complain when they shoot on Nikon (and on Petny). Once again I ask you not to scold me for this consideration, because the so-called. “Flesh colors” vary greatly across races, within races, regions, etc.

    • Denis

now I understand why Canon has separate names for the American market, while Nikon has different serial numbers ...

    • Peter Sh.

What a beautiful thought, yes! Peersik, not a thought!

    • anonym

About sharpening skinton is not sure. Most likely, different iron and other engineers in the development. And the skinton problem appeared due to the carrot color from Canon. To some, this seemed like a benchmark.

  • Koba

I'm not sure if it's correct, it's just that such a thought arose after a long life in China and the use of various cameras for photography, the difference is actually not very big, but look how everyone trumpets about different colors with kenon and nikon, especially the so-called "flesh" , that is, the bodies of the white race are meant, because no one talks about the flesh colors of Africans, right?

    • anonym

An acquaintance was engaged in the repair of televisions, still CRT. He says that the technique is Asian and European-American and was initially set up differently in color. Indeed, there are some differences (cultural, the eyes are sensitive to color, skin color) and all this pours out in our "srach" about "skin tone".

      • Koba

Everything seems to be correct. For example, by “correct flesh color,” Chinese means the Central Chinese color - darker than the European and slightly yellowish. So all people in Asia, and in the Philippines, and even darker. And what he understands by the “correct flesh colors” of the African: And in general, would such a description of skin colors not offend him - if the Eutopean are correct, then the rest turn out to be incorrect, isn't it? And which cameras should manufacturers adjust to? An interesting thing - in China, Canon cameras are very fond of due to the fact that it makes the skin color whiter and removes the yellowish tint. Well, all Chinese women strive for this with the help of cosmetics and artificial embroidery of the skin, and in phones all programs make the skin exactly like that, which is very far from the real color. So much for the work of Canon and Nikon marketers. Is this what prompted Nikon to change the color balance in the latest cameras, which can be seen even with the naked eye and even on the display of the camera itself, if you compare the same scenes? But I'll say this - try to convert something in ACR or Lightrooom with the D700, especially the problematic scene in terms of colors, and then convert the same file using Capture One and you will be pleasantly surprised how far the latter is in the direction of quality and perfection from Lightroom. Do not throw stones in my direction, but in my opinion Lightroom does this by simply corrupting ALL files, without exception. Personally, I have not even put it on the computer for the last 5 years. Try you too and write down your observations. Plus, check out the volumetric images Capture One produces and how ugly the results Lightroom is.

        • Alexey

Rav-converters with default settings make certain transformations in files that change the picture (from their point of view, improve it). The same is true for cameras with intra-chamber profiles. If these settings are "zeroed" - there will be a raw rav or jeep, greenish and ugly. What to work with is up to you. But there is one question: does Capture One or others (who likes what) give a good result in all photos?

  • Ivan

Good evening. Tell me. I have matured for the FX camera, before that I use the D90, I look at the d700, because affordable price and not very used models can be found. Video is not needed, use for family. as far as there is a noisy matrix for shooting night shots, which ISO will allow handheld shooting. I have lenses fast. Is it worth it to overpay for the d750, and I doubt that I will win if I watch the d600-610. Help with the choice, can someone tell me about typical problems with this device. Thanks to everyone.

    • Alexey

      Ivan, good day to you.

I was similarly tormented by a similar question (and you can find my comments above in the text). Now I use both the D90 (when I want to wear the camera easier / more compact or for extra zoom) and the D700 (we can say in all other cases). Especially worth noting is the evening and night time, the difference is enormous both in focusing and in noise (in my opinion about two stops compared to the D90, which is actually proportional to the size of the matrix).
Seven hundred is famous for reliability (with the exception of the shoe and rubber bands), weight (one of the heaviest cameras of this form factor).

I would advise you to think about what is more important for you and why you need FF and why you want to change the camera.
If the deciding factor is the picture, then the D700 will lose (at least in terms of DD and resolution) to all FFs released after it (in fact, that's why they are more expensive in the secondary).
On the other hand, for the Nikon system, this is the cheapest (and at the same time reliable and convenient) way to switch to FF.

Personally, I am glad to buy seven hundred, because I found it in excellent condition at a good price (six hundred were one and a half times more expensive, and the 750th was three times), I don’t have the burden to wear it, and I like to take it off. But this is my case, and my needs.

You may have different priorities and other opportunities.

      Best regards,
      Alexey S.

      • Ivan

Thanks for the advice, I think the 6th series should not be considered, and the quality of the picture largely depends on the conditions. I will look for seven hundred. Can someone tell me about typical problems except rubber bands, and how to find out if the shutter and rubber bands have changed at low mileage on the secondary? thanks

        • Alexey

Other typical problems are described in the article by Arkady (about batteries, for example). Well, backlighting can be a problem in the backlight, but this is not critical. Liveview is slow.
When buying, the suspicion of replacing the shutter can cause its low mileage combined with the general shabby of the camera, traces on the bolts from a screwdriver. And the rubber bands are outside, you can see everything (don't worry about them, they change easily).

            Ok thanks for the tip.

    • Alexey

For trying out and “feeling” the full frame, the d700 is not a bad choice. Compared to d600-610 - better autofocus (they say), better control. C D750 - price).
As for the noises, the seven hundred have achromatic noises, not so striking. And although the acceptable ISO level is subjective, in any case there are fewer of them than on the crop.
Rubber bands - a high-quality complete set costs 15-17 dollars for ebee.
I also faced a similar choice, the D750 dropped immediately (the price of a new one is high, there are still a few options for used). I could take the new 610, but found 700 in excellent condition and do not regret it.
Regarding the colors of the picture and other skin tones - correct light, correct exposure, post-processing.

      • Ivan

Please tell me how much trouble-free can be d700 with 30 srab. shutter and cosmetically in good condition. Price is acceptable. If shopping experience with such a mileage? Thanks.

        • pchel

I have 320 (three hundred twenty thousand) on the counter.

        • BB

30 is not a run, it was just tested and traveled around the camera :)
My D5100 already has> 150k mileage, the only problem is the dust on the matrix, and the 700 camera is from a completely different category and with reliability there is still better than that of an amateur crop.

The day before yesterday I bought a new card for my D700 (firmware 1.04) - Toshiba Exceria 1000x UDMA7, which seems to be protected from damage during checks at airports, etc. (or maybe it's just a marketing ploy). It works just fine with the camera, I checked the high-speed shooting time before the speed was reduced - with the parameters of 14 bit Lossless compresson it was 20 frames. Checked it several times. The time it takes to completely empty the buffer after a 20-frame burst is 6 seconds. This I mean that many people write like the D700 does not recognize large CF cards. There are definitely no problems with this card, with an average file size of 15Mb (with my settings) the camera correctly shows the number of remaining frames, with an empty card about 1200.

Just for information. I talked with a photographer who makes 20-25 thousand frames per month. He has a D700. in which the shutter about 200t is changed four times, two times the gum. Now 750, which is inferior in focusing the auto white balance. The person restored the 5 shutter to 700, said it was a pity for a long time to wait a month !!!!!

Which third-party (Chinese) manufacturer can use the booster for the D700 / Who has experience without problems. Thank you all in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I had Meike, worked without problems.

      • Oleg

In my D7000, a Meike bat-block was eating the battery even with the camera turned off. Those. when the camera without the unit is idle off, the battery loses about 20% per month, and when the battery is in the connected unit, it will completely dry out in less than a week.

Hello! The story is this: There was a D5000, replaced it with a D90 (I liked the screwdriver more in terms of picture quality). Now I’m thinking about acquiring the D700 as the first step towards a full frame. Is the game worth the candle and can there be other recommendations for switching to a full frame ?! Thanks for the tips and your reviews!

    • scif

      Take a new D610 or a used d600. d700 - dinosaur

      • Paul

and what makes the D600 better? The option to buy a D700 for 15000 rubles, or 610 used for 50000 - there is a difference.

        • Paul

I will be happy with objective answers why exactly what you offer (dear readers). Thanks to all. But, we have already the first hour of the night. Goodnight!

          • Alexey

For d700 - cost and prof. control. If you don't like it, sell it without problems (the “dinosaur” will be popular for a long time).

        • Pokekmon

          2 Paul:
D700 is a lot of tired or muddy.
The camera is elderly and it was usually bought not for lying on the mezzanine.
She was very popular with wedding people and is still popular.
Finding a camera with minimal mileage is difficult. A lot have already changed the shutter.
If the camera is needed for sports shooting, for shooting weddings, then the D700 will be better due to the AF module from the D3. The D700 is also a dust and moisture resistant camera. Unlike the D90, the D700 will not have condensation in wet, humid weather. In any case, I have never had a wet snowfall. If you need a reliable machine gun, my advice is to look at the D3 / D3s. Yes, it is more expensive, but their prices have dropped (as well as D4) over the past 2 years. I was in possession of D3s and after it I had very positive impressions - uber version of D700.
If you are shooting a landscape and or just a little, then the best choice is the D610. Worse AF, but much better matrix. Less noise at high iso and noticeably wider than DD.

        • Jury

less than $ 300 for the D700 is a very low price, it makes sense to think about why, a deception is possible or the carcass is completely dead, the price should be twice as high.

          • Paul

I looked at the mileage, the counter costs 26000 shots. Outwardly, ideally, the bottom is a little worn. He says that they gave the camera a long time ago, there was a hobby for the photo, but then he got a job and there was no time left.

Good evening. Arkady, do not tell me how to find out what year the D700 is? What is the firmware and is it worth updating it. What will this improve noise-reduction processing algorithm if I mostly shoot in JPEG?

  • Daniel

In terrible confusion, on the topic of buying a camera. Available 2 crop (D5100 and D90). I decided to sell the D5100 and acquire the FF. For the fixes 50 and 85mm, in the crop a bit crowded. As a result, I scrape the funds on the D700. On the one hand, hoTsSa accumulate at 610, but the financial situation is unstable and I risk losing the already accumulated)))))) Of the genres, I work in portraiture and subject shooting, mainly. Will the picture be significantly better than on the existing crop when buying and using the D700?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything will be different. But the wow effect may not be.

    • peace

at one time after the D90 I switched to the D700 and I had a wow effect)) After I tried the D700, my beloved D90 simply did not pick it up anymore.
Filmed on other cameras Nikon about the same level as the D700 (the benefit in the city is the rental of equipment) and, so far, he remains in favorites.

    • Oleg

You have a slightly odd buying approach. If the lenses are "tight" - buy with a smaller focal length, 35 1.8 is an excellent lens, or you can take the Sigma 18-35 1.8, why change the camera in this case?

  • peace

    Good day!
Please advise which cameras are worthy of attention to compare with the D700 upward? The D700 is simply excellent, I've been shooting with it for three years already. But the time is approaching when it becomes too small to solve some problems. And the choice of Nikon cameras is so large and my head is spinning ... (((

    • Arkady Shapoval

      All full-length, released after dd700.

      2 Worlds:
Take a test of the D750, D810 and D850 (any of these three) with a familiar lens.
Set your usual settings in the camera.
      Look at the RAWs.
Something tells me that I will like the D750.
Because This is a more versatile camera of the three listed.
And by the way, it is now very popular, not least because of the relatively humane cost. As for me, the price of the D810 is strongly (x1,5 times) overstated relative to the D750. I noticed that many D810 owners, if they have funds, migrate to D850. Also, I was surprised to notice that a couple of years ago from Canon 6D and 5DMk3 they quietly switched to D750. Recently, a rather successful 5DMk4 came out and people are switching from old dimes to him, and not to Nikons.

  • Ivan

I now also have a wow effect after the D90 on the D700. The most unexpected is the work with crop lenses: 17-50 2.8 and 50-150 2.8.-The result is sufficient. Focus points in the crop area! Handheld shooting at night is generally something for night landscapes. The D90 is a good device and I’ll leave it for my daughter’s education, there seems to be interest. I just so far had difficulties with the settings of my menu and the settings of the programmed modes - a little bit tricky. And so I think the price is a super result.

  • Mari

Good evening, Arkady. Which camera would you recommend for a photographer?

    • Arkady Shapoval

For a photographer, I would recommend the best. Specify a question.

  • Jeka

It seems that those who claimed that the D700 were rejecting matrices from D3 were right.
How much I looked and took pictures myself - on D3 the exposure meter works a little more accurately than on D700 and NOISE on ISO 2200-2500 on D3 less than on D700. Even 3200 on D3 can still be tolerated with difficulty, while on D700 it is completely impossible. The Japs are cunning and did not deceive themselves - in the top cameras of the norms. matrices, and 700 is worse, sensitive, but worse.

  • Ivan

As far as I have information in D3 and D700 there are matrices - Nikon NC81338L, they were produced for Nikon by RENESAS company (specializing in high quality parts). I have no idea how they can be sorted at the production stage. Therefore, I think your opinion is somewhat subjective and related to the individual characteristics of the camera.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Their picture is still different. First of all, this is due to a different AA filter, which makes its own adjustments not only in detail, but also in BB. Plus the D700 is newer and has an “improved” image processing algorithm. Considering that about 100 parameters affect Nikon's color (can be found in EXIF), there will be a difference.
But it is not so significant as to bother with it. Personally, I would not.
