Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G review

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G review

Every lens maker boasts excellent portrait lenses, and Nikon can be proud of their nanocrystalline monstrosity - the Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G. Nikon name N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1:1.4G (written on the lens) and Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G (classic name) is the same thing. Letter 'N'- not only speaks of a special nanocrystalline lens coating, but also a kind of designation for very high quality, expensive, professional lenses, like Canon's' L' lenses. This is a true flawless professional lens, as evidenced by the 'professional' yellow border around the front lens, the professional 77mm front lens diameter, and most importantly, excellent image quality.

Modifications

In total, Nikon has 6 such lenses:

Each lens deserves its attention and each of them is a kind of legend. All lenses except Nikon 85mm F / 1.8 AF Nikkor and Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor, have different optical schemes, and therefore produce different image quality. It is very strange that all five lenses in optical circuits do not have special elements, such as ED-glass or aspherical elements. The only thing that stands out is the presence of Nano Crystal Coat (nanocrystalline coating or coating) in the Nikon N AF-S version of Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G in this review.

First impression

The Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G lens turned out to be just huge and quite heavy. With a hood, the lens looks just gorgeous. The hood can be worn backwards and always carried with you. The entire lens is made very high quality. The bayonet mount is metal.

Using

Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G belongs to the new autofocus lenses, because it does not have an aperture control ring, aperture control is available only from the camera. The lens has a built-in focus motor Silent Wbird Motor, because the lens will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera. The lens is suitable for both FX and DX cameras. On cropped cameras APS-C Nikon DX EGF will fit 127.5mm. Nevertheless, even on the Nikon N AF-S crop, the Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G remains an excellent portrait lens. In general, a focal length of 85mm is considered a classic for portrait photography.

Focusing

The lens has internal focusing (IF). The autofocus of the lens is average, slower than other Nikon 85s. The lens has a 'M / A' / 'M' focus mode switch. In 'M / A' mode, both manual and automatic focusing is available at the same time. You can correct the focus manually at any time, it is very convenient. In 'M' focus mode, the focus ring rotates only 45 degrees in active mode. I have no complaints about the autofocus operation when using the lens on the camera Nikon D3s. The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G has a focus distance scale from 85cm to infinity. DOF is indicated for F / 16 only.

Example photo on a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G. Focus on infinity.

Diaphragm

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G lens has a huge aperture due to the use of f / 1.4 aperture. Nikon has only 7 autofocus lenses with similar aperture... F / 1.4 is 1.8/2 stops lighter than F / 3. The number of diaphragm blades is 9, and when closed, they give even circles in the out-of-focus area. The bokeh of the lens is excellent.

Image quality

At open apertures, when used on full-frame cameras, vignetting is noticeable, the corners are darkened by about one and a half stops. When the aperture is closed down to f / 2.8, vignetting is not noticeable. The lens creates a sharp image already at f / 1.4, especially in the center of the frame, when the aperture is closed, the sharpness increases. F / 1.4 aperture is fully 'working'. The lens holds back light well, gives good contrast and color rendition. Due to the 9-blade aperture, the bokeh of the lens is 'normal' at all F values. You can find fault with the fact that the discs of unsharpness are slightly cut off at the corners. In general, the image quality is excellent.

Personal experience

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G is sharp, perfect for portraits. The weak point is the focusing speed. It's a shame the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G is not waterproof. You shouldn't worry about excessive sharpness, since the depth of field of the lens is very small. I do not recommend this Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.4G to amateurs, for them there is an excellent Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor.

Dyakoy for a good look around Arkadiy obktiva!
And what if you look around Nikon AF 85mm f 1.4D and can you see the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4GN at the speed of focus, which one should we shorten? Crazy!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, there will be, in the review of the D version I will indicate the difference in speed.

        Nikkor AF 85mm f 1.4D has a different picture.

Autofocus "fixes" are really very necessary lenses! Especially if you have an animated image in front of you: the children are very mobile and, believe me, take them off, twisting the ring of sharpness, you will be tormented, all desire and creative impulse will disappear ... I have already had Nikon AF-S 85 1.4G for about a year. Wonderful lens! Suitable in most cases, a beautiful boke. My advice is this: collect money, do not regret it and still buy a good fix. If you are careful, it will be a great acquisition for many, many years to you and all your relatives! (And you also need to add that the Nikon AF-S 85 1.4G is a telephoto lens, that is, it constantly zooms in ~ 2 times. This it helps not to “stick” to the object being shot very close, it confuses the person less, it remains more natural, there is no stiffness in the expression). For questions, my address is: X-raysp63@ya.ru

  • Alex

It is unfortunate that there are practically no reviews of Canon optics!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I'm also sorry that the owners of the Canon technology do not want to exchange technology for writing reviews.

  • Kranic

I would like to know your opinion about Nikon 85 / 1.8 af-s. Unfortunately, there are few reviews of this lens in the net. The lens is needed to take pictures of children at home (ie complete chaos both in terms of illumination and behavior - the phrase “stand still, now a bird will fly out” is the name of a fantastic film). Thanks in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

The 85 af-s is a great lens, I recommend. (at first I didn’t understand the question).

  • Kranic

No, the shooting is not commercial (children are twitching because their own - in front of strangers they are somehow more peaceful). It's just that I'm a very big newbie here and it's very difficult for me to understand both the quality of the lens and the quality of autofocus (I still don't catch the quality criteria). Now I'm shooting at 50mm f / 1.4G AF-S, but to make a full-screen portrait I have to move closer, and often the focus does not catch close (and the shutter does not release). That is why I decided to take something “closer” (there are no other objects). In this regard, I wanted to find out: (a) whether the aperture ratio in the 85mm f / 1.8G AF-S lens will be enough to shoot forever jumping kinders in not ideal lighting and (b) if it turns out that the back / front focus is correctable ... Well, the third (c) is quite general: the difference between lenses with an official and an unofficial guarantee is about UAH 1000. Is it worth it (if not going crazy)?
    Thanks in advance!

    • Kranic

I forgot to add (maybe this will somehow help in answering my questions): d5100 camera. Maybe she should take 85mm in the presence of 50mm and is not worth it and you need to look at something more long-range?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      a) aperture at ISO 100 and normal indoor lighting will not be enough
      b) fixable only in the service center, mainly treated by replacing the lens
      c) there is no difference between the lenses; they are stamped the same way. I can not tell you about warranty issues.
Whether or not it is worth taking something longer is a purely personal question.

  • Borja

Good day. Have you ever tested / used such glass Sigma AF 85 / 1.4 EX DG HSM? And is it, in your opinion, an equivalent substitute for nikon? Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not used, Sigma AF 85 / 1.4 EX DG HSM is one of the main competitors of optics from Nikon class 85 \ 1.8 \ 1.4

      • Ruslan R.

I can give mine for review ... as interesting as it is in comparison with Nikon.

for Boris, he wrote: ”November 21st, 2012 at 11:31 am · Good afternoon. Have you ever tested / used such a Sigma AF 85 / 1.4 EX DG HSM glass? And is it, in your opinion, an equivalent replacement for nikon? Thanks." my personal opinion is this: whatever one may say, but unfortunately, the optics of other manufacturers is not so much beyond the brink of good and evil, but still remains behind Nikon's even the cheapest glasses, another question is if there is no money to buy the original glass, and the analog is cheaper - this is a purely personal matter, but dear readers of this, do not forget the popular wisdom: "a miser pays twice." try it, look, again for what purposes is this glass necessary ???, plus who nevertheless called the 85 a portrait lens ???? with sw., Dmitry

    • Borja

Dmitry, if everything in life were as simple as you wrote. Yes, I took 2200 dollars, went bought a glass and take it off, rejoice. Of course this is a matter of money. The choice between 1000 and 2000 is not easy)) Regarding the quality of third-party manufacturers. My opinion, until you try it yourself, you will not understand. How many have already written about this Sigma, and that is not so. I had two 17-50 and 70-200. To the first, there were no questions at all, to the second, one, the focus speed, when you shoot a fast sport, was not always in time. Now the question is, is focusing speed worth $ 1300? Everyone, as you rightly noted, decides for himself. Therefore, to say that everything that is produced by third-party manufacturers is worse than the original, especially the cheaper original, to put it mildly, is not correct. For fun, read about the same Sigma 50mm. In fairness, I’ll say that in this case, I’m still inclined to Nikon. with uv. Borya.

  • Gene jb

It's bad that you don't have a forum. Questions constantly arise. I'll ask again here. I have a problem with non-autofocus lenses on a Canon 400D. Very often I miss the focus at 50mm. I started to check - I take pictures of the test line. In room lighting, the focus is clearly (AF confirm chip Chinese). Back focus is obtained with flash. I specially bought an EMF chip to correct it, well, I think maybe the electronics are wrong. But now I'm thinking - the focus jumps from the lighting, I don't even know what to do. if I correct it for a flash, there will be a front on the lamp lighting.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Questions can be asked in similar topics. Confirming focus is not easy. On Nikon the same thing with focusing and metering with chips, I came to the conclusion that it is better to work without a chip, in fact, now I shoot with a manual, including Canon.

      • Gene jb

Well, I can handle the measurements, although the EMF does not correctly calculate the exposure for apertures other than open. But sometimes confirmation of focus is needed, with a small grip it is difficult to determine the desired point, moreover, nothing is visible in the original focusing screen. Perhaps the wedge will save, but has not yet acquired ... It is possible that in the wedge FE it will be better to hit and there will be no front or back. Although, as I understand it, these are problems of the device itself, because everything seems to be fine in the viewfinder. I tried to turn the focus a little after the “peak”, but it takes a long time to get used to a particular lens.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, some lenses really need to get used to.

      • Gene jb

and still forgot. EMF is needed more for EXIF, because when you often change lenses, it's hard to understand which one you shot. And so I prescribed what is needed and then do not strain the memory. As you rightly noted, the photo cannot reliably determine what was taken.

  • Glory

    Good day.
Please tell me about such a lens here: samyang 85mm f / 1.4 as if canon ef, does it make sense not to take Af for that kind of money or it will be better anyway - Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor,
on D5100, the manual lens just scares me ... thanks in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

You need Samyang 85mm f / 1.4 IF Nikon (there is with an AE chip and without a chip). The lens is very good, but manual, if autofocus is important, then the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8G is a very good option.

  • Glory

    Pull out: Samyang 85mm f / 1.4 AS IF UMC AE Nikon F *

    • Arkady Shapoval

      I understand that under Nikon.

  • aidyn

    I just wanted to write a question about Samyang 85 f / 1.4 and af-s 85 f / 1.8 and they already asked him

Will there be a big difference in aperture? and the difference in price, Nikon is more expensive at $ 70

    what would you take

    • Arkady Shapoval

The difference in aperture ratio is 1,65 times. I would take an autofocus Nikkor 1.8Zh

      • aidyn

thanks! I also tend to Nikkor!

  • anonym

Arkady noted very correctly that the lens is also suitable for DX cameras. I would like to "glue" to such a useful article the lines of the book of the famous photographer Georgy Rozov, who has been with Nikon for more than one decade. Here are the excerpts from the book: ... AF Nikkor 85 / 1,4 is good not only as a portrait lens, but also as a macro lens when you need to deal with the background ... ... at weddings I adapted the Nikon D7000 for shooting reportage portraits with high-aperture fixes. The AF Nikkor 85 / 1,4 portrait camera, working on a crop, turns into a lens with a focus of about 130 mm, which allows you to shoot close-up portraits of brides through the heads of friends and girlfriends, without interfering with the course of events ...
I hope that I helped Radozhiv's piggy bank of knowledge, especially to those who, like me, are shooting on a DX camera. Good luck to all!

  • Alexander

Hello Arkady! First of all, I would like to thank you for your fascinating and, most importantly, informative articles! At this stage, I intensely gnaw at granite photo workshops, and in the future I plan to take up professional photography, in particular portrait photography. In this regard, I would like to hear your opinion about whether I should buy the Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4G, or still at this stage (the student) to dwell on something simpler. Thank you in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is a difficult question. Personally, I would not buy the G version, but chose the 1.4D version.

3rd year in work I use 85 / 1.8 ... Why did not I switch to 1.4 is still a mystery, because I used to shoot 85 / 1.4 on the Sony / Minolta system ... But it happened historically and in principle 85 / 1.8 suits me probably at 150 %. Chromatite? And where to go, and the price is appropriate. The only stone in Nikon's garden is the lack of an aperture ring on the 85 / 1.4 G lens itself. Well, I have not yet moved away from the film and will not leave soon, but I want to use excellent optics ... To recruit a fleet of optics from old lenses and new "G" is the lot of collectors.

    • anonym

Yes, it is very difficult to move away from the film, you are right ...

  • Denis

Always knew I would buy myself an 85 / 1.4D! From time to time I borrowed from friends and shot on the D700. It is difficult to imagine anything adequately better for portraits on this device. Now there is an opportunity to get hold of such a lens, but now I also have a different camera - D800. Filmed on the D-version, something is not right. On personal feelings, the vignette is simply striking. In principle, and figs with her, but the edges of the frame are kind of dull gray, not nice. How do you think 85 / 1.4G will fix this issue?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I think it will not fix it. Better take it yourself.

  • Dmitriy

I’ve been shooting with Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM for a year now. Before buying, I tried the entire 85-ok line from Nikon. What can I say .., this Sigma outperforms all versions 1.8 (D, G) by an order of magnitude, but Nikkor 85 1.4 loses to Sigma in sharpness on open (Sigma very sharp on 1.4), in chromatic aberration and in plastic bokeh (more even, but it is for my taste). Yes to everything else Sigma is cheaper one and a half times! The Sigma picture is of course a bomb. I shoot almost always in the open, because why cover it, more than enough sharpness))

    • Oleg

Sigma 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM is really not bad, but not better than Nikon's.

    • Jury

TOTALLY DISAGREE !!! For I took a test before buying. Compared Sigma 85 1.4, Nikon 1.4 G, Nikon 24-70. Compare in the apartment in the sunlight and on the street. On the Nikon, the D3S 24-70 at 2.8 was sharper in the apartment in sunlight than the Sigma. Nikon 1.4 G ripped out the sharpness of all in both cases. Sigma is the best in price, but not in quality. Another minus for me is dust and moisture protection.

Arkady, what do you think is the best lens to buy for maximum image quality: Nikkor 85 / 1.8g or Nikkor 105 / 2.8g macro? DxOmark believes that 85k ...

    • Roman

Is it true that it is better to purchase Nikkor 85 / 1.8g or Nikkor 105 / 2.8g macro for portrait photography?

  • Svetlana

Good afternoon, tell me, please, will this lens + nikon d5100 be enough for commercial filming?
What other devices do you need to buy?
For example, softboxes? I heard a lot of good reviews about them.
    Thank you :)

  • Denis

Commercial shooting is not possible in principle without the ability to control the light. Read for example, Scott Kelby, digital photo of Tom: 1-4. Everything is described quite simply there. A softbox can be a window with the midday sun or a white ceiling (walls) in a room illuminated by an external flash.

    • Svetlana

      Thank you!)

  • Andrei

Hello. what filter do you use with this miracle?

  • Fibius

Hello, tell me where the truth is.
    Here you write:
The lens has internal focusing (IF). Lens autofocus is fast, much faster than Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor,
and in the article about Nikon AF 85 / 1.4D:
Personal experience using Nikon AF NIKKOR 85mm 1: 1.4D
Funnily enough, the Nikon AF NIKKOR 85 / 1.4D has a faster focusing speed than the Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 85 / 1.4G, and it's very strange that the new motorized version of the F / 1.4G focuses slower behind its parent.
The focus speed of the F / 1.4D lens is exactly the same compared to the Nikon 85mm F / 1.8D AF Nikkor.

  • Vladimir

Arkady, thanks for the review! As always on top and affordable!
But I have read more than a dozen of your articles and meet the same mistake all the time.
You write “f / 1.4 lighter over f / 1.8”. In Russian, the word “for” is not used in the sense in which you use it in this phrase.
    The correct way is: “F / 1.4 is lighter than F / 1.8”.
Now, if you wrote in Ukrainian ... There is another matter “F / 1.4 passes more light for F / 1.8” (well, this is so, for example).
No offense. It just hurts the eye. )

    • Vladimir

"In Russian I am the language" = "In Russian"
      "F / 1.4 skips more light for F / 1.8" = "F / 1.4 skips more light for F / 1.8" "
      Damn teacher)))
      Sorry again. )
ps It would be cool if you could use smiles in the comments. I’d be shy here, like. )))

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Thanks. The article is fixed.

  • Vladimir

    Good afternoon, Arkady!
In the reviews you did not find the Nikon 85 f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor lens.
I want to know your opinion.
    There is a lens Jupiter-37A.
I understand the difference between the focal lengths.
I also understand that Jupiter is manual, and Nikon is autofocus.
    The question is as follows.
If you buy Nikon, is this a step forward (in terms of image quality), in place or backward in relation to the existing Jupiter?
    Thank you.

    • Vladimir

Well ... I didn’t wait for Arkady's answer, now I’ll have to answer myself.
I bought a Nikon 85 f / 1.8G AF-S Nikkor lens about a week ago and the sensations are very different from it.
I came across a copy with a slight front focus, but it does not affect much of the photo.
What is better in comparison with Jupiter?
Of course, first of all, the diaphragm. The next parameter is the autofocus of the lens. After Jupiter, it seems too easy to photograph, even unusual ...
Well, and except that the appearance (more modern or something).
      Perhaps this is all!
What is worse in comparison with Jupiter?
The picture quality is at least not better !!! And this surprised me, to put it mildly. At first I thought that the lens was soft at 1,8 and that's okay. But no! I did not carry out special experiments, but by 2,8 (and the steps are broken not 1,8-2-2,8, but 1,8-2-2,2-2,5-2,8), the sharpness did not change, by 3,5 , XNUMX is the same. And all this despite the fact that I considered Jupiter a little soapy. )) Some "experts" say that this is a purely portrait lens and it just paints softly ... In this case, I have a question for the manufacturer. Why bother with that kind of money for a lens if it lathers? Let him make the picture extremely sharp, and I, if necessary, in Lightroom or Photoshop will make the picture softer. In short, I'm not particularly happy with the quality of the picture (I think you already understood this :-)))
Price! I got a difference 7 times more than for Jupiter! And this is a lens without an official guarantee! It turns out that I paid extra for autofocus and the picture is at least no better.

The focal length is a matter of taste and necessity, I think ... To say that 85 is better or worse than 135 would be incorrect, I think.
Distortion, if any, is easily corrected in Lightroom. Chromatic aberration is premier on the same level.
Who cares, I post examples of photos. Both were processed in both Lightroom and Photoshop, with the sharpness being enhanced in both editors.

ps I'll remember something else - I'll add.

  • Alexander

Thanks a lot Arkady. Loved your review!

My question is: I am using the D3100 (DX matrix) and I am afraid that I will have to go too far from the person to take a full-length shot or video and this will not always be convenient and possible.

You said that on a 85mm crop matrix it will be like 127.5mm ... what to do? I often shoot videos and often in full height. Buy 50mm or what? but I would like to have the same bokeh ...

    • Vladimir

I will tell you from my little experience.
I don’t think it’s so far to go.
I, with my Jupiter-37A, move 15 meters away if the camera is in a horizontal position (also crop).
In your case, the distance should be two times less.
Indoors, of course, only a facial portrait.
Video in the room will not work either.
