Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating is a good fast fifty. There are a lot of 50mm prime lenses, and sometimes it is very difficult to understand them. This Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating attracts with its MDF and low price.

Review Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 - view on a modern camera

Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 review - modern camera view

Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating - has multi-coating 'Multi Coating', which is clearly visible when you hold the lens in your hands, the lens gives off a purple color.

Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating - well built, no backlash. The focusing ring is quite comfortable, when focusing it rotates almost 360 degrees, while the 'trunk' of the lens is slightly lengthened. The front lens does not rotate when focusing. Like many older manual lenses, the Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating uses a 49mm front filter.

In general, the lens itself is very compact, you can easily put it in your pocket and always take it with you, a good fifty dollars is never superfluous. I have not found the structure of the optical circuit of the lens, can someone have information on this? You can leave your thoughts in the comments to this review.

The lens diaphragm has 6 blades, which is the usual amount for inexpensive lenses. When closed, the petals form the usual 'nuts'. The lens has a good aperture F / 1.8. With this aperture, the lens can be used in low light conditions. F / 1.8 is 2/3 stops (60%) darker than F / 1.4. The lens has a 'M \ A' aperture control mode switch, the name 'Auto' just means that aperture control is available in automatic mode. Many modern amateur photographers think 'Auto' refers to focus mode, but this is not the case. Earlier, in the era of film cameras, and even now, the aperture value had to be set on the lens itself, using a special aperture ring.

Considering that the minimum focusing distance is only 33cm, the lens makes it possible to shoot close-ups of small objects. Due to the good F / 1.8 aperture and 50mm focal length, the depth of field of the lens is very small, which allows you to create good artistic photos with an emphasis on the desired subject. DOF is indicated for F / 4, 8, 16.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.
  3. CANON M: For cameras with Canon EF-M mount need adapter M42-Canon M, it can be found at this link.
  4. CANON R and RF-S: For cameras with Canon RF mount need adapter M42-Canon R, it can be found at this link.
  5. Nikon 1: For cameras Nikon 1 Series need adapter M42-Nikon 1, you can find it at this link.
  6. Nikon Z: For cameras Nikon Z series (FX/DX) need an adapter M42-Nikon Z, it can be found at this link.
  7. FUJIFILM X: For cameras with mount X need an M42-Fuji X adapter, you can find it at this link.
  8. FUJIFILM GFX: For medium format cameras G-mount need M42-Fuji GFX adapter, you can find it at this link.
  9. SAMSUNG: For cameras with NX mount, you need an M42-Samsung NX adapter, you can find it at this link. There are no adapters for the NX mini camera yet.
  10. PENTAX: For Q-mount cameras, you need an M42-Pentax Q adapter, you can find it at this link.
  11. SIGMA / PANASONIC / LEICA: For cameras with L mount you need an M42-Leica L adapter, you can find it at this link.
  12. LEICA: For cameras with a bayonet mount Leica M need adapter M42-L / M, you can find it at this link.

The lens showed a light soft effect on F / 1.8 due to aberrations, but with F / 2.8 the lens is already very sharp, with small HAcontrasting. In general, the image quality is not bad. Bokeh deserves special attention, it is unusual, the blur zone has a very characteristic pattern. You can judge about image quality from sample photos.

Sample Photos

All sample photos in this review were taken with an Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating lens and a Canon 7D camera (RAW -> JPEG with auto levels). All photos are unprocessed, only the size is reduced to 3MP and the data from EXIF.

To write a review, a very well-preserved copy was used, almost the new Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating. I liked the lens, it gives a really good picture. In general, it’s hard to find a bad fifty dollars.

Conclusions

Auto Revuenon 1.8 / 50 Multi Coating is a good fast fix. At F / 1.8 it has a soft effect. Despite the unpopular Revuenon brand, the workmanship and images are pretty good.

    Very unusual bokeh
    Interesting lens

      I fell into my hands Revuenon 50mm f1,8 ...
I twisted it in my hands. With a regular adapter, the rear lens sticks out. On Canon 1D Mark II, accordingly, it is dangerous to put on - the mirror will hook. I had to try it on Canon 600D and here's what happened.

    The drawing is interesting.

I have a Vivitar 50 / 1.8. I disassembled it and, as far as I remember, the Biotarovskaya scheme there. I can’t say anything about 6 lenses, because I couldn’t see the glues. But it looks like an exact copy of helios. Front 2 separate lenses and rear. Perhaps glued there. In general, on ebay there are a lot of such lenses, with the most unexpected names. And the XM F Porst Color Reflex 1: 1.6 / 50mm UMC MF and Leitz Summicron-R 1: 2/50, which were reviewed here, are from the same series. It is easy to notice that all such lenses have approximately the same construct, sometimes it is impossible to distinguish one from another without an inscription. And the same 6 blade aperture. The difference is only in the size of the lenses (aperture), the quality of the glasses, enlightenment and the lens mount. I can assume that it is impossible to distinguish them from the drawing. Arkady probably should try to conduct such an experiment on the pages of Radozhiva.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you for the information. No one can be distinguished from the figure, this shows the experience of 4 actions held in Radozhiv.

    • Vadim

“But it looks like an exact copy of HELIOS” - he already screamed from the phrase :)))) And it became already a shame for the German Zeiss Planar, Volosov, 1978, p. 317.

  • Misha

Arkady, this is the usual Pentacon of the GDR.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I thought so too, but the Pentacon will be cut at 1.8.

  • nukemall

This is the most common Pentacon MC 50 / 1.8, aka Meyer Optik Oreston 50 / 1.8 (before the manufacturer entered the Pentacon concern). Revue and Revuenon are trademarks of the German consignor Quelle, who traded in everything and at random.

And that the sharpness is not very ... the frame and body were designed by a pathological moron-sadist, apparently dismissed by Dr. Mengele for stupidity. The slot in which the leash of the diaphragm crown goes is located at the very wall of the case, and sooner or later grease from the helicoid is stuffed into it. The sticky diaphragm stops working, the “happy owner” tries to clean it (or sells the lens to someone who, again, tries to clean it). Since the average owner of a lens has neither knowledge nor experience, he climbs from the side where there are screws, that is, from the back. The rear lens assembly is “crucified” on three screws, so if it was removed for cleaning, the alignment is lost. It is correct to start cleaning from the front by unscrewing the decorative ring with the inscription. And three cogs around the perimeter, which are often found near the lenses of Meyer's lenses, should not be touched (especially in Domiplane - it will turn into a pumpkin ... that is, it will give such a “highly spiritual soft effect” that it is sickening to look at).

You can set and adjust the rear lens unit using a pseudo collimator, assembled from improvised means, a beam-splitting cube is removed from the old fed, on one side we direct the light, I put the LED from the lighter and fixed it with plasticine, and on the other side we bring it to the eye and look , if you direct the light from the LED to the lens optics, then from each surface of the lenses a reflected flare will appear in the form of a circle of LEDs, well, if all the lenses are correct then all the flares should converge at one point, if you rotate a little On the other hand, a line of glare will be visible, if something is wrong then there will be no dots and lines, it’s really visible, and then we are already adjusting and getting the screws right, I have two pentacons adjusted, and not only them, everything’s ok eventually

      • Sasha

Please describe in more detail the adjustment process, if possible with pictures (photos), where to shine, where to look. Thank you.

      • Basil

Interested in your alignment technique. You can details of this variant of the procedure, it would be nice with pictures. With uv. Vasiliy.

Having chained me so, having fallen for smashny pennies even in the ideal station. The exact copy of Pentacon 50 / 1.8. Putting the Holy Pentagon near, you’ll be able to name it. I stink the same tez same. Having tested the test express of the test, I didn’t stumble. True, I knew with my hands on the streets, it’s bully and dark. I check with infection the garnish of dormouse sleepy days and walk around with them.
And so the first enemy, scho ob'єktiv to finish the worthy and not worthy of his original Pentokan. And yet, the stench of me was really more worthy of the line of Geliosiv 44-2, 44M-X, and the photographs were taken with them and the bokeh stench was more beautiful to see, the sharpness of the beauty, the transfer of colors, contrast. For that. having added Pentacon 50 / 1.8, selling his collection of Gelios.

  • Novel

I have been using it for more than two years. The lens is great. The video is especially pleasing. Loses to Helius

  • Boris

Here is a choice between SMC Takumar 55 / 1.8 and Auto Revuenon 50 / 1.8 - the price is the same, but which one is better to take?
(Canon 600D and already have Helios 44-2)

    • Novel

I used the Takumar 55 / 1.8 or 2.0 ale on SMC, and the shukav with the SUPER prefix mіzh 1,8 і 2,0 is practically not a difference, as there are two identical objects, only when you choose a lot of different parts according to different markup. Trimming in the hands of ASAHI SUPER Takumar 1.8 і 2.0, the enemy also fell, but one and the same object.
In such a picture, the picture is “warm” and the bokeh is more like me.

Or maybe someone met AUTO REVUENON MC 50mm 1: 1,4?

  • Mark

    And who met AUTO REVUENON 55mm f / 1.7?

    • Vitalik

I have one, but it's Japanese from Tomioka

      • Igor_K

Although the topic is old, but the question of Tomioka's belonging to the production of Revunon 55 \ 1,7 seems to me rather controversial. The Tomiokov lenses have very characteristic designations of the infrared focusing point and the central point too, they are round, not rhombic (at least in my Revunon). Among other things, the serial is a painfully "massive" six-digit one. It seems to me that "Shima Kogaku" is still closer to the production of this "Revyunon", unfortunately.

    • Karen

I have such a lens, a very good one, I took a picture with it for a while, but then I acquired Super Reflecta 55mm 1,4. Already from 2,0, the diaphragm is working, 1,7 times a little soft. I think this lens is preferable than Soviet helios, sharpness is good throughout the field

  • spitzer

A complete copy of the late pentacon 50 1.8 - by design, drawing, mdf 33 cm, software on the open ..

  • Alexander

Oddities Arkady, about the software on the open in the review about the MC Pentacon 1.8 / 50 you do not write. But these are the same lenses assembled in one workshop, and only the nameplate is different. Revue is the brand under which the German Foto-Quelle catalog sold cameras and lenses. Twisted with REVUEFLEX TL25 http://www.praktica-collector.de/210_REVUEFLEX_TL25.htm and this is the same as PRAKTICA MTL-5 only with a different top cover!
