Review of Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8

According provided by Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 lens (MKI version, Non-d type) huge thanks to the store www.fotika.com.uawhere you can find a huge number of different used photographic equipment, including similar lenses.

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f / 1.8

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f / 1.8

The Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 is the very first autofocus lens in Nikon's 85mm prime lens series. It belongs to the list of old Nikkor prime lenses, the characteristic feature of which is that the focusing distance is not transmitted to the camera (there is no marking in the lens name 'D", "G' or 'E'). Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 can rightfully be considered the cheapest 'real' Nikon Nikkor portrait fixed lens with auto focus, which is suitable for full-size cameras.

In fact, there are two such lenses:

  1. Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 (discussed in this overview), sometimes denoted 'MKI', or '85mm 1.8AF', or 'AF 85mm f / 1.8s'.
  2. Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D (a review of which here) is sometimes denoted 'MKII', or '85mm 1.8D', or '85mm f / 1.8 AF-D'.

The 85mm 1.8 AF version (shown in this review) is the predecessor of the version. 85mm 1.8D.

Here I will only consider the difference between Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D:

  1. The 85mm 1.8 AF version was released from December 1987 to April 1994. Version 85mm 1.8D was issued from March 1994 to 2012. Now both lenses are archived models and in January 2012 were replaced by Nikon 85mm 1: 1.8G AF-S IF SWM Nikkor. I want to note that the company Nikon from 1987 to 2012 (and this is as much as 25 years!) Did not change the optical layout of its budget 85-current.
  2. All 85mm 1.8 AF lenses were exclusively manufactured in Japan. At the same time, only part of the lenses 85mm 1.8D was released in Japan, the rest were made in Thailand.
  3. Version 85mm 1.8 AF does not transmit focus distance into the camera and is NON-D Lens. Version 85mm 1.8D transfers the value of the focusing distance to the camera, which allows more correct operation with flashes in some automatic TTL modes. There is no fundamental difference when shooting without a flash between the lenses.
  4. Versions have a different case design. The design is different in the details, for example, in 85mm 1.8D There is a wider window with a focus distance scale. Also, the 85mm 1.8 AF uses an old-style protective front cover, and 85mm 1.8D - new. Externally, the lenses remain very similar.
  5. Lenses have different ring retainers aperture at F / 16 - 85mm 1.8 AF has a regular latch button, and 85mm 1.8D - switch.
  6. Another significant difference is different enlightenment optics. Version 85mm 1.8 AF uses enlightenment NIC (Nikon Integrated Coating) and version 85mm 1.8DDIH (Nikon Super Integrated Coating). Visually, the front and rear lenses of the lenses are cast in a different color (clearly visible in the pictures below). I did not find any tangible difference in contrast and resistance to side and backlight.
  7. Version 85mm 1.8D It became 35 grams lighter (according to the specification in official Nikon sources).

In all other respects, the lenses are the same, including in speed and accuracy of auto focus. No tangible image quality difference between Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D I did not find.

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 version sells slightly less than Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D. I don’t see the point in small savings and recommend buying a newer version of the lens. If you already have Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 on hand, change it to Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D not worth it. Both versions can be safely used for any photographic task - these lenses are well built and can last for a hundred years.

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 and Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8D

On the net I found one funny advertisement for the sale of Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8, which, unlike a lot Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8Dmade in Thailand, was produced exclusively in Japan. Text copied unchanged:

The Made in Japan lettering on the lens barrel “gives”:

  • + 10% to accuracy and speed of focusing,
  • + 15% sharpness at any aperture,
  • + 20% to the durability of the work,
  • + 10% to color rendering and contrast,
  • + 20% to the artistry of the boke pattern,
  • + 30% to show-offs :-)

But, as my experience has shown, this is nothing more than a joke.

Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8 is no different 'D' versions. Despite its age, it can still serve as a very useful, high-quality, budgetary fixed lens for portrait and creative photography.

Update: there was a review of an inexpensive alternative to this lens in the face YONGNUO 100 / 2.

Comments: 105, on the topic: Review of Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.8

  • Alexander

Great lens! I love the Nikorrov optics of that time period.

  • Jury

Just now I noticed that I have the MKI version (NON-D). At one time I bought it as 85mm f / 1.8d and did not pay attention to the absence of the letter “D”. But the price was very favorable + I got a lot of great pictures from it, so this fact does not upset at all :)

  • Bogdan

By the way, for some reason the D-version of the 85 is more expensive than the updated AF-S by about a non-motorized 50 ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Where?

      • Bogdan

http://m.ua/m1_magazilla.php?katalog_=265&order_=price&presets_=18923,11347&brands_=180 on the attached website with prices

        • Arkady Shapoval

          Clear.

          • Bogdan

this trend is also visible with 35s, the full-format non-motorized D-version f / 2 is more expensive than the DX 35s f / 1.8, again at the above fifty dollars. Are the new nikors so bad?

            • Arkady Shapoval

              Everything is much simpler.

              1. New 85 1.8G more expensive than DO NOT 85D. On sale new DO NOT 85D virtually none, and if so, it’s some miserable remnants of the parties. From here and incidents with a price. If you pay attention, the number of offers of the G-version and the D-version is different at times. Also, the price blocks that appear on Radozhiva depend on the region from which the site is read.

              2. About 32 / 2.0D и 35 / 1.8G DX - the comparison is incorrect, because we are talking about a full-frame lens and a lens for crop. A crop lens should, with its glass (or not glass?) Lenses, cover an area 2.25 times less than the full-frame version. Hence the difference in price. If you want to compare 32 / 2.0D with a new lens, then this must be done with 35 / 1.8G FXwhich is much more expensive than his old brother.

Arkady, tell me, I have a torment of choice now - to take a used nikon 85-1.8D OR 50-1.4D?
85 18 rubles 50-to 13 t.rub. both externally in perfect condition (only 85mm checked), both made in Japan, but the price is not very worrying, but such a question: many complain that the 85 gives a purple halo when shooting outdoors, and I need a lens for portraiture ( portrait on the background of the landscape). Nikon d300s cameras? nikon F801s, what should I do and what do you advise me to choose? Thank you in advance !

            • Arkady Shapoval

Halos (aberrations) will only be on highly contrasting details. 50 1.4d is not very successful, 85 1.8d will be better in the general case.

              • vlad

Thank you so much for the answer !!! Regards, Your reader.

            • Valentine

Vlad, “portrait against the background of a landscape” can be understood a little differently. Perhaps more rational (price-result) will be Nikon 50mm 1,8G. Others for this definition would rather introduce the Nikon 35mm 1,8G. But for a classic portrait, yes - 85mm 1.8D. In general, I like the 50mm 1.4D, but I did not immediately appreciate its strengths and achieved an accurate 1,4.

              • vlad

Valentin thank you for your participation and help in my question !!! I don’t want 50-1.4G because I already have 35 (nikon d300s), and the agony of choice is what exactly (D) series lens needs to be chosen, because. sometimes I like to shoot on nikon F801S (film), but fiddling with the lab and developing, extra costs, I still have a weakness for film)) Although everything that Arkady and other people write in the discussion, push me to think (I confess honestly) to choose 50 -1.4D, and cheaper and not much (probably) worse than 85 ... Such are the thoughts. But of course the opinion and advice of Arkady is VERY important for me !!! As well as your help and other comrades (in a good sense of the word!). Thank you, I will think about the final choice.

              • Valentine

If the film is important (or maybe plan for a full frame) - 85 1.8D. On the crop, the 85 is also good for close-ups, or where there are really large spaces. The price is usually 15-17 thousand rubles. in a good condition. Take fifty 50mm 1.4D if you understand the nuances of work (and, as it turned out, there are a lot of them) and for you this is a more convenient focal point. Price 7-10 thousand rubles. In general, the HA that confuse you, in 85, are also no strangers to this fifty-kopeck piece, and a good blend on the street will not hurt both of them. There is no point in overpaying for a purely Japanese fifty-kopeck piece, optically (and in terms of the quality of material, workmanship) there will be no tangible differences.

              • vlad

Thank you, I know the nuances of 50 and of course I understand. no, I don't need a full frame (film is a full frame). Looked at the reviews and photos about 50-1.4D, I like the image, but 85 seemed stronger in this regard ... I would think there is nowhere to rush. Of course, a masterpiece can be done with anything (depends on the hands) Unfortunately, the dollar rate made many insolvent in some things, of course I would take both lenses and there would be no agony of choice))) Thank you !!! And I will have to make a choice and buy one thing)))

        • Jury

This is probably because it is only available in one store at the old inadequate price. On the secondary, the G-version is usually 20-25% more expensive.

  • anonym

    gorgeous bokeh !!)

  • Alexander Gvozd

He paints beautifully on f / 1.8 and not only portraits !!! I have a Nikon 85mm 1: 1.8G AF-S, he used to shoot only portraits, but it turns out he shoots nature perfectly (flowers, berries, mushrooms, etc.) and I realized this only recently when I went to the forest for mushrooms ! Nikon 85mm fixes can be used for various tasks.

  • Alexander Gvozd

    amanita

  • anonym

    Well, finally, the long-awaited review!

  • Dim

The model in pink is a hero girl, even if on the back of the branch, where she sat down between times, some kind person screwed on a handle - it should be a difficult task to keep balance there, not to mention creating a thoughtfully romantic image there :)

  • Eugene

Ophyatki: to the side and back light I did not find, it became 35 grams lighter. Overview as always on top, Arkady. The photos are just beautiful!

  • Dmitry K

according to the sensations, photographs in reviews began to look better than 2-3 years ago. It is color. Arkady, did you just learn how to cook in lightroom or did you change the editor?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Experience.

  • anonym

Nikkor 85 / 1.8 is a rather boring lens (I have a G version). There is no charm and magic in the picture ... But it shoots sharply and with high quality - ideal for deep post-processing! Another disadvantage is that chromatite is strong!

    • Jury

      What is charm and magic?

      • anonym

as you see - you will understand!

    • Serge

I can not help speaking out in defense of 85 1.8G
Firstly, it is very different from the D version, bokeh and sharpness in the open, and secondly, "chromite strongly" - this is not about this lens!

      • Victor

I also did not understand about what 85 is written here. The very one has a live version. Chromium??? Boring bokeh ???

  • Denis

Arkady, good afternoon! Please tell me, does this lens or 135mm 1,8 / f have some interesting pattern, can it be plastic or can the colors somehow uniquely transmit, in comparison with 85mm 1,8g? Is there any interest in the picture in the old Nikon optics?

    • Lynx

      of course!
Colors are transmitted right away immediately transforming into art!

    • Arkady Shapoval

A difficult philosophical question - if necessary, you can make an interesting drawing from it, if not necessary - you can write that you should use for a drawing 85 1.4

      • anonym

For drawing directly from the camera, Helios 85 / 1.5 is enough! It's a pleasure to create! Nikkor 85 / 1.8 is a simple workhorse for commercial fast shooting: sharp eyes, ringing background + a couple of filters in Photoshop - and beauty!

        • Lynx

Yeah ... these creatures "bought and every frame is just a fairy tale !!!" with helios 85 on the Internet a dime a dozen. )))
          just google it.

          • Basil

Helios - crap and the above photo too, but what a Femina !!

          • anonym

            Bokeshka is awesome!

Helios is a good lens! But filming with him is difficult! Especially when it is open ... It is much easier to take an autofocus Nikkor, close the aperture to f8 and be spoiled by a sharp picture!

            ---

When they shoot badly with bad technique, they say "this is reality, baby!"
When they shoot well with good technique, they say, "Well, yes - it's a pro!"
When they shoot well with bad equipment, they say "don't drive it - it's photoshop!"
When they shoot poorly with good technique, they say “the main thing is not the camera / glass, but the photographer!”

            The truth is somewhere near…

            • Lynx

You know, I already somehow passed the stage of digging for a cup.

              • anonym

So you do not care what to shoot? !!!

        • Basil

Haha You, comrade, have you shot this solar vessel at least once yourself?

      • Denis

Thanks! In general, it is clear what and how, especially the Lynxes helped)

    • Alexey

if you’re a TV set, then the interesting picture of the kenon is 100/2 and 135/2.
      but it requires changing Nikon)))
Nikon, alas, doesn’t have anything close to AF.

      • Lynx

Postmaster thinly. But again not true

      • Viktorych

Do not write nonsense, Alex. How much canon pay you for the post?

        • Oleg

It's funny when they write comments on events a year ago. Alex has already changed jobs - do not worry

  • Evgeny*

I am tormented with the choice of 1.8D or 1.4D which is twice as expensive.
If we take 1.8D, then there will be another puff for the second….
Arkady what to do, help advice?

    • Arkady Shapoval

1.4D, then you can buy a flash.

    • Lynx

      Maybe 1,8g?

  • Evgeny*

Thank you, I will do so. On the one hand, the accessibility is 1.8, and on the other, the plasticity is 1.4. Your authority has accented the right way.

Arkady, when can you expect a review of the Canon EF 50mm / 1.8 STM? There is one in the arsenal but I would like to read your opinion :)

    • Maugli

So send it to Arkady, there will be an opinion for you!

“Download the original RAW files from this link (55 '.NEF' files, 707 MB). All photos in the gallery above were taken with a Nikon D700 using a TIAN YA XS-Pro1 Digital MC-UV 62mm Filter. ”
    ==============================================
sense in the examples on the D700? such large pixels and such a low resolution of matrices are no longer and most likely will not be (with the exception of video-oriented and high ISO high-quality Sonya).
in the end, it is not clear, the soap in the pictures is the merit of the lens or D700. maybe it makes sense to test for FF 24Mp or more?
in RAVs it can be seen that the lens does not hold back well, has a low microcontrast and decent HA. except for a couple of evening landscapes, everything else is open, but it would be nice to see what's on hole 4 or there 5.6 in terms of portraits and street.
color also does not make sense, you yourself understand the specifics of the D700. This is a report and does not shine with color.

IMHO, a test on a good modern camera (610, D750, D800, etc.) would allow us to better show the capabilities and disadvantages of the lens.

    • Alexey

on the crop above - leather, plastic, soap, everything is sad ...

    • anonym

Of course, the sharpness on the D700 is lower than, for example, on the D810 ... Present Arcadia with the D810! For reviews, of course ...

      • Alexey

Firstly, Arkady has Sony FF, where this lens should perfectly fit through the adapter. and it seems that the point of collecting money for it was just for tests, no?
secondly, what is the point of photographs and review if it is absolutely incomprehensible that this soap gives a lens or carcass? smears AF? where does this plastic color come from?
is it a lens problem? roughly speaking, I still did not understand what the lens is capable of. maybe she's really good, but you have to guess about that ...
the examples clearly show that the samples are an order of magnitude worse than the picture from the 85mm 1.8 kenon at the price of 350 dollars. to be honest, worse than many 85mm lenses ... including zooms.

following your logic, you see the logic in the review of the powerful expensive video card on the dead shaggy pentium of 2007 and the parrots obtained in this test will allow you to draw conclusions about the capabilities of the video card? ))))

      • Alexey

and you never said about other remarks - in the RAVs you can see that the lens does not hold the contrast well, has a low micro-contrast and decent HA. except for a couple of evening landscapes, everything else is out in the open, but it would be nice to see what's on hole 4 or 5.6 in terms of portraits and streets.

Thank you for your useful comment as an explanation of the lens stocks and the disgusting quality of the photo shown above. ))))

            • anonym

You can ask another question - why does she bark? She barks with enviable persistence. It has long been clear that she is crazy about Canon. Moreover, the fact that she judges a lens by a pair of pictures (of course unsuccessful) does not honor her .

              • Alexander

And you feed and feed him all))

              • Alexey

                in rave and off stoke.
can you go to the canine?

Arkady confirmed the presence of problems with the lens, which is quite evident from the pictures.
and HA and poor backlash. and soap on 1.8.
and that it would be better to shoot by 24p.
What else do you want to add?

Kenon is full of problematic lenses, like any manufacturer.
less troll, more work with real equipment, less anonymize on DRL :)))

              • anonym

You have the same wishes and take a break at last from writing.

              • Alexey

so it’s you trolling with your DRL))) and you don’t know that Arkady has a new FF for tests)))
at least read that Arkady writes)
but while you caravans and other "wisdom" utter, we are discussing the technique here. ))))
you would have less religious fanaticism and your energy to study the result, pictures that Arkady puts out, and not endless parrots DXO)))

              • anonym

No fanaticism. Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Fuji, Sony ... produce wonderful cameras and equip them with no less wonderful their own and third-party lenses. About Sonya Arkady - in the course, calm down. In Arkady's pictures I pay 90% of attention to the artistic component, i.e. Unlike you, I try to poke around in multi-pixel, plastic, micro-contrast shit as little as possible, posing as a great connoisseur. There are a dime a dozen of such connoisseurs.

              • Alexey

all that is visible is that you pick and anonymize on DRL, i.e. just do what is called pixel art)))
the photo, even more so in the LENS REVIEW - I repeat - IN THE LENS REVIEW - as Arkady correctly noted, should show the strengths and weaknesses of a particular iron. there is no need to look for an artistic component there, this is not a photo exhibition, but ordinary technical photos! )))) which show CA, resolution, bokeh, micro contrast, color rendition, work in contrast, AF accuracy and speed - everything is exactly what Arkady points out in the review. have you ever read his review ???? ))))

read that Arkady answered my comments and calm down already. ))))

          • anonym

You have a bad opinion about Arcadia. To take technical photos, they do not invite the model and do not shoot Love stories. By the way, bokeh and color reproduction are the elements of the artistic component.

            • Viktorych

Nik79 (“Alexey”) will not rest. He will continue to write any nonsense with enviable fanatical persistence, without actually removing anything at all.

              • Yarkiya

Your indignation is understandable, but not timely, pay attention to the date.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Indeed, it would be more interesting to use a more modern camera with a large number of megapixels.

In this review, there is more difference between 1.8d and 1.8af. This review indicates that 1.8 is no worse or no better. In the review 1.8d, it is indicated to me that the lens is very weak and afraid of backlight, the same thing that you described.
Photos with flares are shown precisely in order to see the real jambs of the lens. Shot mostly at 1.8, since the lens with an open aperture is most interesting, at 2.8 everything becomes sharp and more “boring”.

      • Alexey

Now it is clear. The question is, does the lens have problems with AF or is it the merit of the D700? clearly miss.
I think it would be good to compare with hole 2.8 to assess how the situation is getting better.

        • Arkady Shapoval

All lenses have misses; I don’t see the point in clinging to one frame.

          • Alexey

I do not agree. under normal lighting conditions (as in the picture above), misses on holes 1.8-2.0 should be less than 1% - with good AF on the carcass.
            these are their lens requirements.
in complex lighting - about 5%.
in the examples above, it seems that there is a front focus.

    • Bassoon

You are talking about resolution in vain, my DF has 16.6MP, I am very glad that matrices with a reasonable number of pixels are still being released, I don’t need any more.

  • Dmitry K

Can anyone explain this phenomenon. Why DRL believes (and with it a bunch of people) that the d700 has less sharpness than the d800. Seven hundred more pixels, less chance of smearing the line. Arkady himself wrote that on seven hundred any rubbish rings. On a small pixel, on the contrary, all the flaws come out. And in DRL and heads only these moronic pictures with glasses (what does this mean?). By what principle is sharpness generally compared on matrices with different resolutions?

    • Arkady Shapoval

They measure not "real MP", but "Perceptual MPix" http://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Looking-for-new-photo-gear-DxOMark-s-Perceptual-Megapixel-can-help-you MPix actually shows how much MP the lens permits on each camera.

As for the d810 and d700 with this lens - according to the dxo version, the 85 1.8d lens on the d700 resolves almost the entire sensor (10 MP out of 12 MP, which is 83%, it turns out that almost every pixel will be “sharp”). On the d810 it only resolves 22 MP out of 36 MP - 60%, it turns out that when viewing 1 to 1 there will be 40% of what is called “soap”.

From here it really follows that the sharpness at d700 will be higher, but this also means that the detail in the d700 will be 2 times lower than in the d810 (Detail and sharpness are different things)

      • Oleg

        Thank you Arkady enlightened.

    • Alexey

on the fingers, sharpness - local contrast. how clearly the border is visible.
detail - the ability to display details, how many pixels are responsible for a section of the image. all other things being equal, the more pixels are responsible for the image, the more details will be displayed. blur - reduces detail (resolution) and sharpness.
hence the requirements for lens resolution, the fight against micro-smears, etc. hence, it is obvious that the requirements for AF accuracy on a multipixel sensor are much higher than on a small-pixel one.

      • Bassoon

And they do a pretty good job of it. I want to note, back in the days of Nikon D40, I used to use a central focus point, I never used all the others in my life, until Nikon DF, and I changed at least 3 cameras. What was my surprise when I decided to use the 3D tracking focus! Sharpened sharply, ceteris paribus. Apparently the compensation of micro-grease makes itself felt.

  • Oleg

Arkady, hello! Really like your color work from Nikon d700! Reveal the secret in which converter do you process?

    • Radmir

I will answer for Arkady, look here https://radojuva.com.ua/2014/01/mos-6581/

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the Nikon D700 review, in the “Personal experience” section, there are descriptions of using the native Nikon D2xs profiles for the Nikon D700 - that's the whole secret.

  • Vitali

Tell me with nikon d7000 c will this lens work with autofocus or only in manual mode?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Will work with autofocus.

    • Yarkiya

Of course with autofocus, D7000 with a screwdriver and this is a glass for a screwdriver. For the future, look directly at the mount, look for a drive: a circle with a straight slot, as if under a flat screwdriver.

  • anonym

Walnut grove vdnh))) I always take pictures there)

There is a question for the “connoisseurs”: choosing between 85 1.8AF and 85 1.8D, taking into account that the difference in price is a third of the cost, is it worth leaning towards savings? How then to work with the flash, if something, for example, in a backlight or in other conditions? Or will it be almost possible to give up on the flash ??

    • Arkady Shapoval

In most cases, you won’t feel the difference, especially in the BL-TTL mode. In very rare cases, in the usual i-ttl mode and only in the frontal orientation of the flash there can be problems.

      • Ann

        Thank you for your reply!

  • Alexey

Good day. Faced with a strong glare on this lens. Control weakly holds.
Tell me somewhere there is a list of compatible blends? I bought a Chinese one but it’s not technologically advanced, it’s not put back and there is no way to install a cover on the lens.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The original HN-23, but this lens uses non-bayonet type lens hoods, so you are unlikely to find one that will be placed on the back.

  • George photographer

    Hello, Arkady!)
I decide what to buy .. From the options Nikkor 85 1.8 AF and micro Nikkor 105 2.8D or Sigma 105 2.8 Dg macro (the price is about the same)
    Nikon d600 camera
I plan to shoot portraits (studio, street), also shooting at night, the presence of a macro is not significant, but for me it is certainly a plus.
    Questions:
What is the best way to separate the subject from the background?
Background blur will vary greatly at 2.8 105 and 85 1.8?
What will be better for a 24mp matrix?
And of course, your personal opinion, as an authoritative person, is of interest, what would you gain personally in such a situation?
More convenient 85ka or 105 for you personally?
Sorry for so many questions! But if it’s not difficult for you .. Dandelion for you
    (づ 。◕‿‿◕。) づ

    • Sergei

I advise you to look towards Tamron 35-150 2.8-4 I have one on the d610, the sharpness is better than these fixes, there are also 85 1.8d and 105 2.8 sigma macro, of course it's not 1.8 but 150 f4 is also normal.

    • Maria

Blurring should be achieved, in theory, comparable. One lens has a higher aperture ratio, 105 - fr. Both parameters affect blur. True, with aperture ratio of 1.8, you are unlikely to shoot, but rather at slightly covered apertures.
If shooting at night - as advised above - try the zoom. He has a stab. Well, all other things being equal, of course, the 85 has a slightly higher aperture. With a 2.8 lens (not 105), I often shoot at 3-3.5.

Sorry, the questions were for Arkady). Just at one time there was a similar question. I bought 85 for portraits, and for the rest - a zoom of 70-200.

Portraits - it depends on what kind. For facials, more fr will be better, although in fact this is not so important.
      Good luck with your purchase!

      • George photographer

Thanks to everyone for the answers!) I have 70-210 3.5-4.5 and 28-105d, zooms are not very happy with something

        • George photographer

          * 70-210 4-5.6D

    • Maria

Have you already had some kind of zoom in order to try different FRs with the same size, for example? Here is a double-edged sword, quite logically obvious. Depending on the background and face of the model, sometimes with different fr but the same size, some models look more interesting. Therefore, the very quality of the images on the fix, of course, should be better. But artistically, you can lose a number of interesting frames that you can't “see” on fix. But this is my, purely feminine view (you get used to yourself from different angles and with different lighting to evaluate).

    • Arkady Shapoval

For a portrait - a portretnik, in this case it is 85mm.
For detailing on a 24MP sensor - makrushnik.
85 is shorter, which means it’s easier to work with.
      Blur differs significantly

      • clicker

does this af 85mm 1:1.8 non 'D' will work with D3200? plan to purchase from eBay..help me out please..thanks in advance..

        • B. R. P.

All functions will work, except AF.

  • Sergei

And there is a very powerful stabilizer
