Nikon Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical (abbreviated as Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G) is a good versatile lens for Nikon DX cameras. First of all, the lens is interesting in that it can use a wide angle of 16 mm focal length. In terms of EGF will be 24 mm. From 2008 to 2015, it was the only universal lens in the Nikon Nikkor DX series that was able to 'expand' to 16mm focal length. Only in July 2015, another lens with a similar focal length came out - Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E N ED VR.

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is considered a more advanced lens than the series 18-55, 18-105, 18-135, 18-140 and is at about the same level as the series 18-200, 18-300 and 18-70... The only two more 'fancy' native universal lenses are Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E N ED VR and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm 1: 2.8G ED SWM IF.

Assembly

A copy of this review was made in Thailand. To the touch Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is pleasant and weighty, its weight is about 500 grams. The lens uses common filters with a diameter of 67 mm. When handling the lens does not add up any negative feelings.

Please note that the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G on the bayonet side has a special rubber gasket, which is a sign that the lens has dust and moisture protection. Unfortunately, the exact level of protection of the lens from environmental influences is not specified anywhere on official sources.

The focus ring is plastic, and the zoom lens is rubberized. Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has metal bayonet mount. The retractable lens barrel consists of two sections, to the touch they are quite durable, without any backlash.

With frequent use, the lens may begin to suffer from spontaneous lengthening of the frame (trunk of the lens) under its own weight.

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood HB-39, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom ring is lost.

The Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G comes with a soft case CL-1015, and the lens itself comes in a small cardboard box with a characteristic Nikon coloring.

Diaphragm

Diaphragm lens consists of 7 rounded petalswhich form a fairly even hole. Diaphragm closes to F / 22 by 16 mm and to F / 36 by 85 mm of focal length.

Unfortunately, Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G cannot boast of good aperture.

There are marks with a focal length on the zoom ring, the following is a list with the minimum numbers F available for these marks:

  • 16 mm - F / 3.5
  • 24 mm - F / 4
  • 35 mm - F / 4.5
  • 50 mm - F / 5
  • 70 mm - F / 5.6
  • 85 mm - F / 5.6

Stabilizer

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has a second generation VR stabilizer that can compensate 3.5 stops by shutter speed. In values excerpts this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 10-12 times longer than what the lens without a stabilizer requires.

The instructions for the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G lens indicate 4 stops (measurements by Nikon), and on the official website 3.5 feet (measured by CIPA). In any case, the stabilizer works well.

To enable / disable the stabilizer on the lens there 'VR ON / OFF' button. There is a 'Normal / Active' switch to select a mode. The stabilizer can operate in two modes: 'Normal' and 'Active'.

  • 'Normal' mode designed for most scenes and avoids movement when camera shake. 'Normal' mode can still track camera movement to create panoramas.
  • Active Mode most suitable for shooting when the camera can not only shake, but also move in different directions. Most often, it is advised to use this mode when shooting in motion.

The stabilizer itself works well. I was able to take pictures without grease and hard work at 85 mm focal length and 1/20 second. I always use the stabilizer in 'Active' mode.

Focusing

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G focuses quite quietly thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Auto Focus Speed - medium closer to high. On cameras D700 и Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro the lens focuses tenaciously and does not release objects from the field of sharpness.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focusthat is indicated on the case by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'. The front lens does not rotate while zooming. It is possible to use any filters without problems.

The minimum focusing distance is only 38 cm, while you can shoot Macro with 1: 4.6 magnification. Nikon Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has a window with a scale of distances in meters and feet. There is no IPIG scale as well as labels for working in the infrared spectrum. In manual focus mode, the ring rotates about 120 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus. Manual focus is easy.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode. You can turn on the 'M / A' mode and forget about this switch forever.

Compatibility and Features

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G, although designed for Nikon DX cameras, but will work correctly with all Nikon digital SLR cameras (full list here).

When using the lens on Nikon FX full-format cameras with the image area 'FX format (36x24)' at all focal lengths, all focusing distances and all values aperture Strong vignetting or completely black edges of the image will be noticeable. Minimum vignetting available at 85 mm focal length, focus at infinity, and f / 5.6 aperture. Using a lens hood only enhances vignetting. Work in the 'Format FX (36x24)' mode is undocumented and I write about it purely for educational purposes.

If on Nikon FX cameras select 'Image area' -> 'Auto. DX Crop '->' On ', then after attaching a Nikon DX lens to such a camera, the camera will automatically use' DX Format (24x16) '.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Image quality

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G creates a sharp image in the center of the frame, even on open apertures. The corners and edges of the frame are slightly worse. The lens suffers from noticeable distortion at 16 mm focal length. The strongest vignetting is noticeable at 16 mm focal length and F / 3.5. Chromatic aberrations well fixed. The lens behaves well in backlight and creates a contrast image. Image quality is up to standard.

My experience

At one time, I really liked the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G, but after a while, my love for this lens faded. I find it too overrated in terms of both features and price. At one time, Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G was the only native alternative to expensive professional Nikon 17-55 / 2.8G.

I do not recommend changing models 18-105, 18-140, 18-200, and 18-300 on this lens. But if you have any of 18-70, 18-55, 18-135, then Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G will be a worthy replacement.

The Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is a good versatile lens, giving you the widest angle of view of any Nikon Nikkor versatile lens. Of the shortcomings, I would like to highlight the inflated cost.

But after 16-85 I tried 28-70 from Nikon. Although the difference is noticeable on crop, now I know what to save money for, I would still have to test 24-70, they say there will be better sharpness, but 28-70 have a sharpness “be healthy”.

Hello. I am tormented with the choice of an everyday lens on the D5100. Tell me to take 16-85 or 18-105 + SB 700, the price will be the same. Basically I’m taking pictures at 50 1.8, but there’s not enough angle in the room, but I don’t want to wear whale 18-55!

    • Vadim

Well, I don’t feel like it in vain. Give the whale a normal light (at least a flash) and do not suffer with a fix.

    • Lancet

Put 18-55 - work a week and you will understand whether you need another lens for a lot of money, if you are an amateur and will not print A-4 photo.

      • Kostya

at 18-55 there is not enough length, for example a matinee in kindergarten. And after fifty dollars I don’t want to wear it at all.

        • Alexander E.

Focal lengths 16-85 for matinee in children. the garden is a great lens, but if you just shoot it with a video, and for the photo you need something aperture so as not to scare the children with a flash.

          Ochepyatka! D300 and 18-55 VR set ...)))

Out of interest, I compared the 16-85 with other lenses. We should not forget about the carcass itself, on which the D50, D100, D200, D7000, D7100 tests are being carried out. On the D50, all lenses are about equally good; - that the whale is 18-55, that it is ultra-expensive - the difference is almost imperceptible. But the D7100 clearly demonstrates the quality of the lens. I don’t want to bore you with nuances of comparison, but immediately my impressions; 16-85 has excellent resolution at all focal lengths, average focusing speed, stub is quite good (you just need to give it time to "capture"), light, but ... DARK! However, a diffused flash solves the problem completely. In the reportage genre, backlit is simply magnificent, the landscape and architecture are wonderful, but you do not expect artistic effects with a smooth background blur, soft half-tones in a portrait and other things. The combination of 16-85 and D7100 is impressive; -they are relatives. By the way; - The autofocus of the D7100 is very good!

      Good day!
I'm getting ready to buy a d7100 ... and I'm faced with a choice of 18-105 or 16-85, as you wrote, they are relatives ... maybe you can throw off the links to your photos in this kit ...

About quality .... A month on the journey, this lens stood as universal on the D300
I visited Laos, Thailand, Cambodia. Toward the end of the trip, the gum started to move away and a lot of dust got inside.

    • Antoxa

Are you talking about gum on a bayonet mount?
      It's strange, I don't have it at all ... sadness (

      • Antoxa

And should there be an o-ring on it?

Arkady, hello! I trust your opinion, tell me 16-85 or a new 18-140 (use “for all occasions”) in conjunction with the D5100? I would like to see a review of 18-140. Thank you!

I want to buy a lens, I am faced with the choice of either Nikon 18-200mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR II DX Zoom-Nikkor or Nikon 16-85 mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor focal lengths and price is not important for me main direction image quality build quality which of these two lenses would you recommend to buy ?????

  • LA72

I got 16-85 in conjunction with the D5200. Had D40x, 18-55 and 55-200. I wanted to replace KIT, but it was the carcass that made the most impression! At first glance, I did not notice any significant difference in comparing lenses. A little lighter, a little ... I bought it before my summer family vacation. Wide angle considered as mandatory. Though in the mountains, even in an apartment, but without a shirka, no matter where! Having more than one year 18-55 and 55-200, I realized that 55 is often not enough and throwing lenses has become a common and familiar thing, but not loved and sometimes not convenient. Here are some thoughts on 16-85. The overall impression is very solid, high-quality in the assembly of the product. There is a rubber seal at the bayonet. The lens snaps into place on the camera. About 2.5 thousand frames were made during the trip in different conditions and in different lighting, and 55-200 was almost not useful to me. I’ll even say that I threw it a couple of times without obvious need, in order to slightly change the nature of the pictures. On a long focus from a short distance it is interesting to make portraits. 16-85 simply conquered me with its universal distance. In good light, the picture is beautiful. It seems to me that this is a lens that needs to be studied. In my opinion, it gives the best sharpness at f8 aperture. You should not expect a deep artistic blur from it, but fixes are needed for this. I compared it with 35 1.8 when shooting against the light of casting homemade ficus. So, chromatic aberrations in 16-85 are practically absent, unlike 35, and then they are almost not noticeable homogeneous. At a wide angle, sharpness drops, but you can't call it soap. I think the diaphragm matters. Regarding distortions at a wide angle, I will say the following: 1) set the distortion control in the camera, 2) shoot strictly parallel to the object, without overwhelming the camera up or down. It is clear that the edges will pull in breadth, for that it is shirik, but you will not see any barrels. And the most interesting! When I straightened up the footage and started a little RAW processing, then I saw how much more interesting it is to work with the pictures taken 16-85. Sharpness, sharpness and color reproduction are more correct or what. In general, after more than six months after the purchase, you no longer remember how much it costs, but use a solid, convenient thing. PS about the misses of auto focus. Maybe something was, I can’t recall. But the focus was not missed on one important, targeted photograph. The lens was chosen carefully checking for back-front focus. I chose the third instance. I see a purchase as a lens for a new carcass. Replacing something larger than 18-55 navryatli will bring joy from the purchase, given the cost of 16-85

  • hottoke

I have been using 16-85 for 3 years now. At first it stood on the d3100 as a replacement for the whale 18-55. Perhaps this is my purely subjective opinion, but 3,5-5,6 on the whale and 3,5-5,6 on 16-85 are completely different things in favor of the second. As already written above, the metal mount sits tight, does not play. Only recently I noticed such pleasantness as an elastic band, apparently anther, when it got a little crawl (though it was immediately put in place and to this day does not bother). The construct is good, solid. There is really a very slight backlash when the trunk is extended, but I do not think this is a disease, since it does not do any harm when shooting. After three years of active use, the rubber band came off (again decided by re-gluing). For all the time of use under different conditions, no visible increase in dust or moisture or anything else was found inside the lens. Now I use it on the d7000. If on d3100 there was a feeling that the lens makes 80 percent of the picture, then it seems that 7000nik and 16-85 are created for joint creativity. Pleased, though not large, but 85mm bokeh, which is not in the whale 18-55. Another small nuance is a bit away from the topic. Recently I took a 50 / 1.4 AF-S NIKKOR. I must say right away that the impression was created due to my inexperience using fixes, BUT there were a lot of misses in sharpness for 7000, while there were no more problems with throwing 50nik to d3100 with sharpness. The feel of using the 50k with the d3100 was more enjoyable
than with d7000. And in both cases we are talking about focusing on one point. In other modes, both there and there, it is very difficult to catch sharpness, especially if you need to move all the time and shoot dynamic scenes. But from 16-85 there is no such problem, but do not forget that the aperture is low, so of course he can’t compete with 1,4. But no one has yet canceled the flash). And the last (finally))) that I want to say from my own experience. Kit 18-55 did not disappoint me even once, so the decision to buy such an expensive lens as 16-85 should be conscious.
PS Thanks to Arkady for such a great job as this site. Before buying photo equipment, I always read your reviews. And I recommend it to everyone) Regards, Sergey.

Very good valuable comment. And I completely agree about whale 18-55. Great lens.

  • Alexey

Arkady, thank you for your work and help, I got a lot of interesting things from the reviews and went to the choice of lens on the nikon d710. Having read many reviews, I chose and acquired the Nikon 35 / 1.8 fix as the first lens, I am very pleased that I was not mistaken, but I also need a universal travel zoom for trips and hikes, because I have read a lot of your information and from the outside I make a choice between:
Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical
nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5g ed-if af-s dx zoom nikkor (only used, but price / quality)
Sigma AF 17-70mm f / 2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM Nikon F (the last one that came out)

I’m very interested in your opinion on the latest Sigma 17-70, they write a lot of things!

  • Paul

16-85 is a lens with an interesting picture, and 18-105 is just a good whale.
I used both on the D50.
18-105 has small optical distortions in almost the entire range of focal lengths + good stub, HA is almost indistinguishable, but at the same time its picture is faceless, it is no different from inexpensive lenses.
16-85 gives interesting colors (sky, greens, flowers, etc.), his picture is unique in its own way, I haven’t seen anything like it, it’s better YES, worse YES, similar to NO.
Sometimes HA gets out and spoils the picture, but this jamb can be forgiven for the sake of the picture. The stabilizer is excellent, it often saves, but when shooting with a tripod, it is better to turn it off, pictures can turn out better. The price in my opinion is too high, but there are few alternatives.
18-55 is generally a stub, I use it so that the dust does not fly inside.

Yes, more ... 16-85 and 18-105 worked on D90 and D5000, which is actually the same thing, and there really wasn't much difference on these photos, CMOS matrix with a small pixel, high noise level, plastic picture, scanty DD, small working range of apertures due to the pixel equalized two different quality lenses.

Should I change the fret to a Mercedes?

      Thank-)

    • Oleg

Well, I’m not getting on the gelding. Well Lanos on Aveo for sure

    • Seryozha

I bought it. After the whale, just a bomb. Zaporozhets on Laborzhini, here is the correct comparison.
Either the whale would be so bad, or a successful instance of 16-85 would come across.

      how much is his condition?

  • Diana

Hello Arkady! I ask for advice.
I'm getting ready to buy a Nikon D7100. Now I have a Nikon D80 with whale 18-135 and a fifty-fifty f / 1,8. I want to sell the whale later along with the D80, there’s no desire to shoot it after fifty dollars.
Need a lens for reporting morning performances in kindergarten, anniversaries in cafes, children's birthdays in the same place, etc.
For a very long time I can’t choose a lens, because the budget is limited, 25t.r. is the ceiling for the lens so far.
    Should I stop at 16-85?

    • Alexander

Diana, the lens is good, but indoors without a flash it does NOT work. It is "darkish" for premises. A couple of flashes will solve all problems. Outdoors, with sufficient lighting, the quality of the photo will greatly delight in any genre. Lighter lenses start from 2.8 aperture on all focal lengths and their cost is ... HIGH. It's up to you.

  • Paul

Hello Arkady. I bought a used D7100 together with 16-85. After a while, I noticed that the photos turned out to be darkish even in bright sun. At first I sinned on the device, and then I compared similar photos with the same camera settings with a 35 f / 1,8 fix. The histogram is 16-85 significantly shifted to the left compared to 35. I put the whale 18-55 - photo is similar to 35. Almost all photos 16-85 have to be lightened first in Lr from +0.5 to + 1.0, and then the shadow should also be pulled to +60 - +70. Now I shoot at 16-85 with a constant correction of +0,7. What do you think: is this the norm or I was not lucky with the lens?

    • Sergei

I bought it less than a week ago - I did not feel the need for exposure compensation. However, I mostly shot in A and M modes.

  • Sergei

I will express my opinion about this lens.
The picture from him is better than from 18-105 it turns out. Autofocus is faster than 18-105. Regarding the stub, I agree to all 100 - I did not notice much difference between the Normal and Active positions. But if possible, it is better to shoot with the stabilizer turned off. he can wash the picture a little (for those who like to view photos at a scale of 100-150%). The price for the lens is clearly overpriced. My opinion is that it should not exceed $ 350-400. In the presence of 18-105, it seems like it makes no sense to buy it. And when upgrading from 18-55 / 3,5-5,6, it is better to take it if finances allow.

    • Vladimir

Sergey, you write if there is 18-105, it seems like it makes no sense to buy 16-85 for a Nikon d7000 carcass, then maybe a sigma of 17-50 is 2,8 or the same tamron, of course, a Nikon plan of this kind would be better but a little expensive, then as.

I, at one time, fell for advertising and bought this miracle ... Let's just say, this lens has one plus - the focal length ... Nothing else: absolutely flat picture, gray color rendition, lack of volume ... I somehow sold it in a new state at half price ... Nikon regression, this is typical of our "multi-megapixel" era ...

    • Vladimir

Aleksey, so that you recommend okromya native 17-50 2,8 nikon.

  • Alexey

Arkady, you should add an overview 20-35 \ 2.8 wide ... A really standing lens, rare, really ... In my opinion, the only shirik with a "pattern" ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Send for a review.

  • Alexey

There are promoters of this miracle on the forums, like Yulia ... Don't listen and don't buy, it's not worth it ...

I'm an amateur. I bought a NIKON D7000 with a kit lens 18-105. Photographed for 2 years mainly indoors. Specifically fireplaces (I am a stove-maker) and outside - barbecue ovens. All the time, something in the picture did not suit. Either misses with sharpness, or color rendition. And when close to the object, a very visible barrel was obtained. I rummaged through the entire Internet and the reviews of the sellers of photo equipment themselves. Spat and bought 16-85. From the very first comparisons (what is on the camera monitor, what when printing), a significant difference is seen in favor of 16-85. When photographing at close range, there is practically no distortion. The picture with a more natural color reproduction is much nicer than with the 18-105. In general, I am very pleased with the purchase and do not regret it a bit. And the D7000 looks prettier with the new lens. And the range of 85 or 105 is not very significant in the difference. Approaches specifically. IMHO of course. Hello!

Good evening! Which lens should I prefer the Nikon 16-85 or Sigma 17-70 / f2.8 -4 D5100 camera. I will purchase to replace 18-55. I photograph a lot in the house using an external flash of the camera because The camera gives a hint of poor lighting in the daytime. Thanks for the answers!

    • Andrei

16-85 is preferred. Still, the native glass, and judging by the tests, is less prone to chrome aberrations, and the resolution of the optics will be higher.

  • Nicholas

Tell me, on this lens the focal lengths are indicated taking into account the crop or not, for example, if I rotate by 28mm the angle will be the same as on the full-frame Nikon N AF-S Nikkor 28mm 1: 1.8G Nano.

PS Camera Nikon D5200, I am tormented by what to take for the room, 16-85 is clearly not enough

    • Alexander Malyaev

Focal ones are always united. 28mm cropped is like 42mm full frame. If 16mm is not enough (EGF 24mm), then some kind of shirik should be taken, for the money. Shiriks are expensive ... For example, you can take a closer look at Kropov type 11-16 Tokins, there are reviews here.

      • Nicholas

I inaccurately expressed myself, there’s enough angle, not enough lordship or something. I analyzed the pictures obtained if you shoot 1/100 ISO-1000, then at aperture of 3,5 is good, sometimes it even covers up to 4,5.

But 1/100 exposure is not enough, there are a lot of lubricants (I shoot children) Tell me how much to raise ISO if you need 1/200 exposure? 2000?

In addition, smart people say that in addition to the aperture, the lens also has a parameter T - enlightenment or something, I don’t have enough of it, but the angle needs ~ 35 on the crop. Vobschem straight brains boil. )

        • Alexander Malyaev

And then what does the flash option not suit you?

  • Oleg

After 18-55, 18-70 and 18-105, this lens seems insanely sharp, correct in color and contrast, and, moreover, across the entire field of the picture. It is especially noticeable when shooting landscapes, when you process a photo and leaves are noticeable in the trees. And 18-XX turned foliage into porridge.
Immediately after the purchase I wanted to do an exact comparison with the 18th, but I realized that this was not worth it because of the too obvious significant superiority of 16-85.
By the way, I want to confirm the sharpness measurements from the photozone.de photo lab: indeed, the sharpness at the open aperture, if not the maximum, is very high.

  • lech

at 18-70 sharpness is also, in principle, not worse. The assembly at 16-85 is excellent. if you shoot a report and partying - then only to them. tried 18-140 for a report, no, not that. too cumbersome. but 18-140 is an ideal portrait lens.

    • Alexey

18-140 no portrait is not a place. this is a regular travel darksum.
as well as a pack of other such darksums.
