What did not like:

  1. The lens is almost all made of plastic. The bayonet mount (attachment point) is also plastic. The lens itself is made in China :(.
  2. Auto focus speed is average. It's funny, but the Nikon 55-200 VR focuses faster than the more advanced model - Nikon DX AF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G ED VR SWM HRI. The focus ring, unlike the zoom ring, is not rubberized and rotates only 60 degrees.
  3. The lens does not have any additional marks on its body.
  4. During focal length changes (zooming), the rear lens moves, creating a “vacuum cleaner effect,” which can quickly contaminate the interior of the camera.
  5. The lens shows good sharpness at f / 7.1 apertures
  6. Nikon 55-200 VR has a weak macro, with a maximum magnification of 1: 4.3.

From personal experience using:

These simple kit lenses with simple old cameras give such results that you start to doubt the objective assessment of these lenses.           But at the same time 18-55 and 55-200 have their advantages with good image quality: 18-55 is light and small and has a small MDF (for macro), 55-200 is probably the lightest of telephoto lenses. But both have a common drawback - the rotation of the front lens when focusing. You can't shoot with a polarizing filter. But over time you will want to.

    Maybe I was very unlucky with the lenses - this one and the whale one (18-55), but I don't get such sharp pictures as are shown in the article. And not only in this, but also in articles devoted to other lenses.
    I put about the same aperture, about the same short shutter speed, the white balance is not auto, but according to the situation, I tried the format both JPG and RAW, focus in the center and distributed - in general, everything seems to be very close to what is written under the pictures, and the pictures are noticeable that they are not too sharp. D3000 camera, 10MP matrix. Maybe it's not the lens, but the camera itself?
    I would like to see an answer / advice. By the way, about the same, but in other words, Vladislav noted in the comment of 03.12.2017/XNUMX/XNUMX.

      Hello. If there is no front-back focus, then this is what these lenses are capable of. It remains to sharpen (possibly contrast) in the editor. The 55-200vr I was quite comfortable with, the 18-55vr is not so, unlike the 18-55 EDII. Applying 3000 / 35g, 1,8 / 50g lenses, as well as Tamron 1.8-28 / 75 lenses (as well as Nikor 2,8-70vr) on the d300, he noted a noticeable improvement in the picture. I’m not calling for anything, just thinking out loud.

    There is a D5200 with a whale of 18-55 (it costs most of the time on the carcass) and a fix of 50 (when shooting small things at home in poor lighting and in a burst of creative enthusiasm it is used).
    At work, once a month - once every two months, it is necessary to film sports mass events (athletes at performances and awards, sports reports). 18-55 for this, of course, is not enough. There was experience of using D5300 complete with 18-140 for the same purposes at another job - I liked everything, but that was the employer's technique.

    There is a choice: buy yourself 18-140 (used), sell 18-55 and live in peace. Use for personal purposes and at work without unnecessary troubles. True finances for these purposes need more, and they somehow feel sorry, because photography is not my main work, just a hobby that I use sometimes to the glory of a good employer :)
    Or buy a 55-200 VR (also used) and use it at sporting events and outdoor trips? Then it comes out half the price, but in this version I am confused by the park of lenses with plastic mounts that I will regularly rearrange back and forth - there is a greater chance that something will break sooner rather than later, and it will be easier to throw it out than to give it back to fix it.

    In general, there is no extra money, and something with a longer focal distance caught fire, so that it would benefit both myself and the employer. And it seems like I liked everything from 18-140, but a rational worm sharpens "you need these 100+ once a month, in the summer - three times a month, is it worth it - spend so much?"

            On the 18-140 working past, I got used to it and the lubricant was an acceptable moderate amount, I recruited 500-200 normal reporting pieces from 250 frames, we load it on social networks: for grandparents and parents, they are for happiness. Of these, a dozen 4 were selected for my needs. I shoot in the same halls at work, when I have to do this, slowly under lighting and ceilings, I somehow learned how to adjust how much this is accessible to an amateur, to the extent that it is accessible to an amateur.             In general, I have already realized that I will most likely buy 55-200 and for my amateur needs I will master it. Everything else is more expensive and such costs in my case are not rational. Colleagues working in other directions do not understand why I bother so much with photographs ...

It’s a pity that you have a D5200, and not even a D90. In conjunction with the SB600, we could experiment and put the flash closer to the shooting location and shoot with two flashes in conjunction with the built-in flash (it’s also the control for the 600th). Well, or buy more flashes and arrange them, controlling from the camera.

As a long-term reader-re-reader of this blog and a modest amateur photo-amateur, I believe in the fact that it is necessary to improve the skills of aligning the settings and the general photographic skill in order to get better and more beautiful shots :) there is simply not enough range - having shot three flash drives of 16 GB of competition rhythmic gymnastics wants to bite out of resentment - there are very few successful shots, so that the athletes are close-up and acceptably sharp ... From the whole series of continuous shooting, you have to choose "the best of the mediocre" and then increase the sharpness of the selected a little in the editor :(
        A colleague with a lens on Canon with a ceiling FR 105 has a better result. From 18-140 I was better at another job than his, I remember ...

      18-105 from 2011 with a plastic bayonet has gone about 100k. From the problems - a little dust inside (it practically does not affect the photo), and the “trunk” began to spontaneously leave, if you lower the lens down. I changed the lenses relatively often (while there was one body until 2015) - 18-105 / 70-300 / 50 with the mount, nothing happened. So if you want to save, save. After buying 18-140, the old man 18-105 went to the spare shelf, but did not notice much difference in the picture between them.

          Firstly, the outgoing trunk is a little annoying, and secondly, sometimes you need two devices with 18-105 / 140, and friends, as usual, also need their own lens for these dates, and they can’t borrow it.
          From experience, if you shoot solo performances from a distance of at least 5 meters or more, then 70-300 is usually better, 105/140 is not enough.

            Thank you, your answers helped me to formulate a solution, I will study another 55-200 and 55-300 as an option (although according to reviews, including Radozhiva it is somehow ambiguous) and I will buy separately one of these amateur telephoto lenses, instead of replacing 18-55. Fortunately now there are kind of good offers on these two models.

      They never rushed me to the NP, I checked the cameras and optics for about 15 minutes. But when I took one of the cameras, the NP employee said that it was forbidden to insert my memory cards into the devices. I inserted it anyway, he was indignant but did nothing (I tried to explain that it was impossible to fully check the camera down without a memory card, but he repeated 'we have such rules'). This happened once (and I bought, it seems, about 4 fotik pieces in the last 3-4 years).

      Turn on the stabilizer and look through the viewfinder. Move the lens direction slowly to the side. The image is slightly “frozen” (slows down). You can turn off the stabilizer and do the same again. You will see the difference.

      Technically, you need the HB-37, it's round. HB-34 is made in the shape of a flower. In theory, the HB-34 should work on a VR lens, possibly giving slight flares on the sides. But on the contrary, a vignette at a wide angle may appear.

      Therefore, if you do not want to take risks and you are not confused by the cylindrical hood, take the HB-37. If you prefer the flower and the main function of the hood - protecting the front element - you can use the HB-34.
