Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical

Nikon Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm 1: 3.5-5.6G ED VR SWM IF Aspherical (abbreviated as Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G) is a good versatile lens for Nikon DX cameras. First of all, the lens is interesting in that it can use a wide angle of 16 mm focal length. In terms of EGF will be 24 mm. From 2008 to 2015, it was the only universal lens in the Nikon Nikkor DX series that was able to 'expand' to 16mm focal length. Only in July 2015, another lens with a similar focal length came out - Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E N ED VR.

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is considered a more advanced lens than the series 18-55, 18-105, 18-135, 18-140 and is at about the same level as the series 18-200, 18-300 and 18-70... The only two more 'fancy' native universal lenses are Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 16-80mm 1: 2.8-4E N ED VR and Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 17-55mm 1: 2.8G ED SWM IF.

Assembly

A copy of this review was made in Thailand. To the touch Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is pleasant and weighty, its weight is about 500 grams. The lens uses common filters with a diameter of 67 mm. When handling the lens does not add up any negative feelings.

Please note that the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G on the bayonet side has a special rubber gasket, which is a sign that the lens has dust and moisture protection. Unfortunately, the exact level of protection of the lens from environmental influences is not specified anywhere on official sources.

The focus ring is plastic, and the zoom lens is rubberized. Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has metal bayonet mount. The retractable lens barrel consists of two sections, to the touch they are quite durable, without any backlash.

With frequent use, the lens may begin to suffer from spontaneous lengthening of the frame (trunk of the lens) under its own weight.

There is a bayonet mount mark and a mark on the case for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood HB-39, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the zoom ring is lost.

The Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G comes with a soft case CL-1015, and the lens itself comes in a small cardboard box with a characteristic Nikon coloring.

Diaphragm

Diaphragm lens consists of 7 rounded petalswhich form a fairly even hole. Diaphragm closes to F / 22 by 16 mm and to F / 36 by 85 mm of focal length.

Unfortunately, Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G cannot boast of good aperture.

There are marks with a focal length on the zoom ring, the following is a list with the minimum numbers F available for these marks:

  • 16 mm - F / 3.5
  • 24 mm - F / 4
  • 35 mm - F / 4.5
  • 50 mm - F / 5
  • 70 mm - F / 5.6
  • 85 mm - F / 5.6

Stabilizer

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has a second generation VR stabilizer that can compensate 3.5 stops by shutter speed. In values excerpts this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 10-12 times longer than what the lens without a stabilizer requires.

The instructions for the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G lens indicate 4 stops (measurements by Nikon), and on the official website 3.5 feet (measured by CIPA). In any case, the stabilizer works well.

To enable / disable the stabilizer on the lens there 'VR ON / OFF' button. There is a 'Normal / Active' switch to select a mode. The stabilizer can operate in two modes: 'Normal' and 'Active'.

  • 'Normal' mode designed for most scenes and avoids movement when camera shake. 'Normal' mode can still track camera movement to create panoramas.
  • Active Mode most suitable for shooting when the camera can not only shake, but also move in different directions. Most often, it is advised to use this mode when shooting in motion.

The stabilizer itself works well. I was able to take pictures without grease and hard work at 85 mm focal length and 1/20 second. I always use the stabilizer in 'Active' mode.

Focusing

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G focuses quite quietly thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor - quiet wave motor) and refers to the lens'AF S'type (with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera.

Auto Focus Speed - medium closer to high. On cameras D700 и Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro the lens focuses tenaciously and does not release objects from the field of sharpness.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focusthat is indicated on the case by the letters'IF'-'Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'. The front lens does not rotate while zooming. It is possible to use any filters without problems.

The minimum focusing distance is only 38 cm, while you can shoot Macro with 1: 4.6 magnification. Nikon Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G has a window with a scale of distances in meters and feet. There is no IPIG scale as well as labels for working in the infrared spectrum. In manual focus mode, the ring rotates about 120 degrees, when it reaches the extreme positions it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus. Manual focus is easy.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode. You can turn on the 'M / A' mode and forget about this switch forever.

Compatibility and Features

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G, although designed for Nikon DX cameras, but will work correctly with all Nikon digital SLR cameras (full list here).

When using the lens on Nikon FX full-format cameras with the image area 'FX format (36x24)' at all focal lengths, all focusing distances and all values aperture Strong vignetting or completely black edges of the image will be noticeable. Minimum vignetting available at 85 mm focal length, focus at infinity, and f / 5.6 aperture. Using a lens hood only enhances vignetting. Work in the 'Format FX (36x24)' mode is undocumented and I write about it purely for educational purposes.

If on Nikon FX cameras select 'Image area' -> 'Auto. DX Crop '->' On ', then after attaching a Nikon DX lens to such a camera, the camera will automatically use' DX Format (24x16) '.

Also, note that while changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called 'effect' of a vacuum cleaner, which can increase the amount of dust that accumulates in the camera.

Image quality

Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G creates a sharp image in the center of the frame, even on open apertures. The corners and edges of the frame are slightly worse. The lens suffers from noticeable distortion at 16 mm focal length. The strongest vignetting is noticeable at 16 mm focal length and F / 3.5. Chromatic aberrations well fixed. The lens behaves well in backlight and creates a contrast image. Image quality is up to standard.

My experience

At one time, I really liked the Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G, but after a while, my love for this lens faded. I find it too overrated in terms of both features and price. At one time, Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G was the only native alternative to expensive professional Nikon 17-55 / 2.8G.

I do not recommend changing models 18-105, 18-140, 18-200, and 18-300 on this lens. But if you have any of 18-70, 18-55, 18-135, then Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G will be a worthy replacement.

The Nikon 16-85 / 3.5-5.6G is a good versatile lens, giving you the widest angle of view of any Nikon Nikkor versatile lens. Of the shortcomings, I would like to highlight the inflated cost.

Koristuvav. I would say dear obktiv and not really who care for that same 18-105 ... for such a penny I am not particularly sensible.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Probably for 16mm :) there are no others like that, so they fight :)

      • Vitalik

        Yeah. Totally.
Ale vserovno dyakuyu for the review. Tsikavo read ...

        • Alinca

This lens is fully revealed on new matrices with a large number of pixels. On the D80, D90 the difference is not very noticeable, but starting with the D7100 or D5200 you understand what such a price is.

          • Sergey

I bought complete with d7100. So he often gives out a blurry picture. And he tried it with a tripod. As he later found out on the forums, he can’t allow 24 megapixels. I bought 28-85 nikon from ibey. I don’t have any limits. So I’m selling my 16-85.

      • Peter

at the beginning you write about the release of the new 16-85, but this

      • Eugene

And please tell me 2 mm at the wide end give a tangible increase in the viewing angle or are almost indistinguishable from the same 18? And at one time I compared Tamron 18-200 with Nikor 16-18 and still did not understand if there was an increase in the viewing angle ... Maybe I don't understand something?

  • Denis

I tried this in the store, I want to switch to something from 18-105. I didn't notice the difference between 16-85 and 18-105, except for some convenience in the “corners”. I want something more impressive, like the Nikkor 14-24 f / 2,8. But nowhere will I find one in a store to try it on a crop.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Recently I ran statistics of "my" wedding focal lengths using the bridge filter, it turned out 16,50,120 although the available range is 11-200.

  • Vladimir Kaverin

You can explain in more detail:
"The lens can spontaneously lengthen its trunk."
    In which cases? What for?
I found this strange, considering that “the lens itself does not change its size when focusing. The front lens also remains fixed when zooming. "

    • Roman D

The author of the article made a mistake. The lens changes size when zooming in. I have yet to come across a wide-normal zoom that does not change its size when zooming in. Even the Nikon 24-70 / 2.8 - and that change.

      • Oleksandr

Tokina 28-70 is not the only choice when focusing, and the main one is the same, so I’m so inspired by the similar design.

      • Oleg

Naikon - what a heinous nickname you came up with .. ((
70-210 f4 does not change when zooming, only when focusing, the front lens rotates and travels slightly back and forth

      • Alexey

We look at Wikipedia: Correct pronunciation of Nikon, stress on the last syllable ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

For example, when the lens is attached to the camera, and the camera hangs on a strap around your neck, and you walk with it in this position, the lens spontaneously from 16mm can protrude 85mm. Also, I never mentioned that the lens does not change its dimensions when zooming - this is obvious, there is no error.

      • Vladimir Kaverin

I cited a quote from the article: “The lens itself does not change its size when focusing. The front lens also remains fixed when zooming. ”
If this does not mean that the lens does not change its size when zooming, then what does it mean?

        • Taras

From the same quote, everything is clear - when focusing, the dimensions do not change, and when zooming, the front lens is fixed, that is, it does not rotate. Nowhere is it said that zooming does not change the size of the lens. So there is no mistake

          • Roman D

not mobile means not mobile. this means that there is neither translational movement nor rotational movement relative to the camera. include logic and common sense

          • Roman D

In general, the author has already made a correction. so all the rules

        • Alexander

and you do not catch the difference between focusing and zooming?

      • Oleg

Well, it can spontaneously lengthen only theoretically. In practice, he himself does not "decompose." unless you pull the lens unit

      • Dmitry (dptver)

I have been the owner of this glass, probably since 2007. Even having survived numerous trips, my spontaneous does not leave at all when worn even with constantly worn polarik and a hood. Apparently it depends on the specific instance. In general, Arkady, I would like to express my deep gratitude to you for your work, I read all your reviews with great interest.

        • Dmitry (dptver)

And I also want to confirm the very high image quality and sharpness produced by the glass. I would not say that the focusing speed is slow. And, most importantly, a rather tenacious focus, does not “prowl” even in bad conditions.

          • Sergios

Why are you doing auto-suggestion. The truth is, face-to-face marketing is not in vain that they ate their food. This lens is qualitatively at the same level 18-70 the same, lower quality resolution than 18-55 VR, and sharpness on a scale of 6 parameters versus 7.1 on 18-55. The focusing speed can be estimated on the D300S and it is not .. the speed of the grandmother in the dance, again at 18-55 three options.
There is a range of equivalent = 24, and this is to impose an aluminum plate on the baronet, only and appreciation up to marketing and the belief of suggestion.

  • SergeyF

tell me, this lens will be lighter for the whale 18-55 (for this focal) and is it worth changing the whale for 16-85 for that kind of money?

    • Arkady Shapoval

At 55mm focal length, the maximum F / 5.3 is available. I would not say that the lens is somehow better in aperture than the whale 18-55.

  • DV

Good day to all! for SergeyF: this lens from the review will be definitely better than the whale 18-55, if you are ready to give that kind of money for it, take it, but consider 18-105 as an option, they don’t differ much in the picture, another thing is that the metal structure is not 16-85 plastic mount if it matters to you. subjective opinion, everyone has their own eyes and different financial capabilities, so see who needs this optics for what purposes

  • DV

addition to the previous post: optics are high-quality, but definitely lose 24-70, but here the price tag is different

    • Arkady Shapoval

24-70 is generally a different class of lenses :)

  • Sergei

    lens for show

  • Vyacheslav

Regarding the spontaneous extension of the trunk, I confirm, but I started it after 2 months of active use, at 16 mm there is often blurriness, autofocus misses periodically and sometimes quite often when the lighting is not ice (The focusing speed is average, even according to my feelings is lower than that of AF 70-210 F4 which is criticized for slow focus. As a staff is not bad, I took it for the reason that 18-55 whale outgrew and on 17-55 2.8 was not financially adequate. Good endurance - I swam in a muddy mountain river for 20 minutes together with the included photo in the Caucasus and is alive and well)

    • DV

thanks for the info about water. and the trunk is probably a disease of all dx class glasses.

    • Oleg

Judging by the tests from the site http://www.photozone.de the picture quality of both 17-55 and 16-85 is the same, but the quality of workmanship and protection from dust and moisture - here 17-55 is on top

    • Dmitry (dptver)

Vyacheslav, apparently, you just had no luck with him, I wrote above, I have a rather old instance, but there are no backlashes, misses, or advancements.

  • Antoxa

Hello everyone. Arkady, thanks for the article, has long been waiting for this review. When sharpening, for example, from MDF to infinity, or when the focus starts to fidget, an RF creak is issued, how critical / normal (abnormal) it is. 2 months lens

    • Alexey

I have this problem, this is the difference between an ultrasonic focusing motor. I have this model for half a year

    • Denis

also has such a problem. I took a second-hand, how much it was used - I don't know. looks like new. creep like metal on glass

      • Denis

I fell into my hands the same, but newer. squeaks when running in both directions (mine - only one). then everything is fine. however, the 18-55 seems to have exactly the same motor, this sound was not there

  • Alexey

Regarding the trunk))) I took this lens not new and have been using it since half a year, quite active use, but there are no problems with spontaneous advancement) I completely agree with the fact that the lens lathers, but there is one feature, it lathers when at infinity, but here in the zone up to one and a half meters it is quite sharp. Covering the diaphragm slightly corrects the situation. and the autofocus account ... could be faster. Those who want to change 18-105 for this model, I strongly do not recommend it. Thank you Arkady for this review, as always objectively and not difficult for both professionals and beginners. I often recommend your resource to my friends who are just starting their practice in photography.

  • Lera

I’ve been using this lens for more than a year. Excellent focal lengths and constructiveness. The camera has a separate subject, it works fine especially in active mode. The picture is slightly inferior to 17-55 24-70, but it’s logical another glass class and the price is appropriate. If aperture was 2.8, and so because of darkness, he loses. Having understood his features, one can draw a decent picture out of him and indoors only with an external flash. http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/lerochkin-valera/album/188714/?&p=1

    • Oleksandr

      What about colors? ACID!!!

    • Oleg

Photos abaldet. Kharkov is a beautiful city.
And which camera did you shoot?

      • Oleg

        there is exif

  • Alexey

All the same, as 16-85 in comparison with its predecessor 18-70.

    • Arkady Shapoval

18-70 is faster and lighter, I personally like 18-70 more.

      • Dmitry (dptver)

And I, on the contrary, just gave my first 18-70, after I bought this one. I have not seen worse glass. The distortion was noticeably slower than the 16-85, and the HA were generally unavoidable !!

maybe he was defective with you. distortion is noticeable only at a wide angle, and even then it is not always and normally corrected. At one time I wanted to change 18-70 for something better with a small surcharge and considered 16-85vr as an alternative. but it turned out that of the real pluses, the latter has a slightly wider angle and a slightly sharper picture on it. at the same time, at the long end it is 2 stops darker, and the stabilizer by and large increases the price almost 2 times from its value perceived in the picture. Those. to replace, it was necessary to pay 2-2,5 times the selling price of 18-70. For me, the advantages of 16-85 clearly did not justify such a difference in price. By the way, according to aberrations, if you believe the reviews 16-85 are also worse than 18-70, there was no way to compare in different conditions.

      • Dmitry (dptver)

And its most important advantage is 16mm, which is noticeably more convenient than 18mm. These 2mm are very noticeable, believe me. In addition to 12-24, this kit is enough for travel photography.

  • lera

Perhaps I didn’t use it 18-70 faster, but by color rendering and sharpness 16-85 bypasses 18-70 18-105 18-55 and a number of glasses, see the examples above. We have a suggestion, we look, we compare, and we read reviews of amateurs and pros. Although of course I will not argue a small difference. Everyone is happy with their glass.

    • Denis

Yes, it should be so - everyone should be happy with their glass! I'm happy with my 18-105, I will grind it into powder, I will hammer nails with it, but I don't want to part with it for anything! I also wish everyone an understanding with my technique!

    Summer photos 16-85 winter 50mm f \ 1.8 http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/lerochkin-valera/album/257294/?&p=1

    • Andrey

you have a type of summer / winter lens)
      seasonal change?)

  • Vitaliy d

Arkady, tell me how is this lens compared to 18-200 GII? Does it make sense to change or buy 16-85 to 18-200?

    • Arkady Shapoval

18-200 more versatile, 16-85 better quality.

  • Sergei

Owned 18-70,18, 135-16 and shot 85-16 for two years. No matter what they say, the picture he has the best in contrast, distortion. The color rendition is especially impressive - the color is saturated, deep and clear. Especially seen well when shooting the sky, clouds. whales give a more gray plaque and this is not treated in the editors especially. What else did I notice, from 85-16 the camera's exposure metering works very well. But the autofocus on the XNUMXmm upset the impression that it lives its own life ... and focuses everything near underfoot ... sometimes even redundant, but the picture feels like plastic or something, flat. Otherwise, a solid lens, no more. Optimal for nature

  • Lera

Andrey, in summer there is a lot of diffused light for dark glass, but in winter it is very dark and very fast aperture is the best option. But that’s not the point, I just took the fix from the plot and uploaded these photos to the album. If you use 16-85 correctly, not a bad glass without flaws of course, but in conjunction with the flash, it’s not bad in the report. In short, I have no regrets about it.

  • Anatoly

Arkady, 16-85 from 18-200, according to your purely personal impressions, it is much different in the quality of the picture, otherwise I "stole" my 18-105 and turned up at the same normal price 16-85 and 18-200, I think. I am photographing now on kaleinar the quality is super but lacking in versatility. Thanks. The site is super!

    • Arkady Shapoval

16-85 will be better in quality.

      • Anatoly

Thanks. I bought 16-85 and 18-105, and now I will test "head-on", I'll see how they differ. I already had 18-105, no complaints.

        • Vladimir

And after a couple of years, they noticed the difference between 16-85 and 18-105 and in which direction the quality is better.

  • Denis

    Just choosing a universal lens for a DX camera. budget - $ 600 I want something better than $ 18-105. Conditions - focal length - 16 / 18-80mm, image stabilizer. I identified 3 options for myself:
    1) Nikkor 16-85mm f / 3,5-5,6G VR
    2) Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS
    3) Tamron 17-50mm f / 2.8 VC
Tamron does not fall under my definition of “universal” in focal length, and the ambiguous reviews about the quality of the mechanics are also confusing. Sigma, judging by the reviews, has worse image quality than nikon, despite the high aperture. There remains nikon, which suits me for almost everyone. (I would like a large aperture ratio, at least constant F4) Perhaps I missed some other interesting options, I ask the advice of knowledgeable people)

  • Alexander

Arkady, thanks for the review. The lens is interesting, as a replacement for the whale on DX cameras. But it is not clear from the review whether it gives much better image quality compared to 18-105. Is it worth it to pay more than 2 times? I would very much like to compare with 18-105 with the same focal and other shooting parameters.

    • Neo

Alexander, pixel-peeper.com and photozone.de to help you, you will see everything for yourself;)

      • Arkady Shapoval

There are really a lot of synthetics on pixel-peeper.com and photozone.de, I'm not a fan of pixel fights. In general, the quality from 16-85 is higher, but it is not worth overpaying or changing 18-105.

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

Especially for those who have doubts to buy: If you already have 18-105 from the purchase of 16-85, I strongly discourage you, I tried it myself, now I know. There is no difference between them, absolutely no, except that 16-85 is slightly sharper at the edges, but insignificantly. But at the short end, geometric distortions after 18-105 are simply terrifying - absolutely terrible. A person who has fallen into the edge of the frame will not escape mercy, will be stretched to the point of disgrace, as in a cartoon, and if it is a vertical frame and a person is not in the center of the frame - as in a room of crooked mirrors and post-processing is not treated.
So, having 18-105 in your hands do not even look in the direction of 16-85, he will not bring any joy.

    • neo

examples of "terrible" photos can you see? I don't have such a problem. Can you have a bad copy?

      • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

And the point is in the photo, when I tried several of them - the result is the same. By the way, on FF 24-120 / 4 it is absolutely identical to 16-85 on crop, the distortion is terrible. There are no examples with me at the moment. You can try to shoot a vertical frame at a wide angle, only place the person's face closer to the edge of the frame (for example, to the top) and be horrified. In the same situation, 18-105 gives very gentle distortions, completely incomparable with 16-85.

    • Anatoly

Tested 16-85 and 18-105 in the field. 16-85 constructive and tactile sensations at the height, assembled efficiently. In terms of picture quality, there is a slight advantage over 18-105 but not the same as the price. There is no difference on the printed A4, both lenses are dark zooms. The wide angle is not so wide from 18 (and given that the landscapes are not my main thing), I left myself 18-105, and sold 16-85. It didn’t work out Ah! So if you agree to overpay twice for 2 cm at latitude and a bit more sharpness, then it is yours. The colors on both lenses are the same in my opinion.

    • Peter

if you shoot on d90, then you won’t see the difference, but if on d7000,7100,7200 then it is visible

      • Vladimir

The differences between the d90 and d7000 in megapixels are not significant, but on the d7100, maybe yes.

    • Alexey

Vitaly, I completely agree with you.
the difference is real only at the edges. there is no sense in overpaying and losing in focal ones. IMHO! )))
      (tested on D7000 and D7100).

  • Oleg

Interestingly, this glass can satisfy the 24 megapixel matrix of Nikon D7100?

    • Stas Mikhailov

no, there will be soap. 24MP require only new fixes.

      • Oleg

You probably have a lot of pictures where 7100 is drawn, if you say so. Or have everyone tried this bunch themselves?

      • anonym

And how will he (16-85) behave on the D5100 (16MP)?

        • Alexey

          like 18-105).

    • Peter

can, the pictures are very sharp

    • Vladimir

My friend takes pictures on Nikon d 7100 with a lens 18-105 from the previous camera d 5100 and it is very beautiful.

  • grandmother's seed

Arkady, a question for you - here is 18-55 with a stub whale on my d7000 gives the same picture quality - what is this 16-85, so it should be?

not so mean and superior in color and sharpness to this 16-85, 18-55 lens ???

  • Peter

    I’ll insert my 5 kopecks
    1) I was shooting with whales 18-105 on the D7000, on one of the trips in parallel with me on the D7000 from 16-85 I was shooting another person ... out of sports interest, they filmed the episode at the same time ...
    Conclusions
    1) 16-85 sharper .. not globally but noticeable
    2) angle (important to me)
    3) I don't understand why, but a slightly different color rendition ... more natural or something ... but this is a moot point
    4) constructive
In everything it is a little bit better ... but is it worth changing the whales for it ... then everyone decides for himself ... if we proceed from the quality, then yes .. if from the price ..
Well, a note, do not say that it is no better, just because the price does not like

    • Oleg

Comparing colors from photographs taken with different carcasses is at least incorrect

    • Vladimir

      Well written.
