How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.

Сonclusion

HELIOS-44M 2/58 - a good modification of the older versions of Helios-44 with good sharpness, unusual twisting of the background. The main difference from previous versions was blinking aperture with 'M / A' switch to select aperture control mode. There are two versions of what exactly the letter 'M' in the lens name stands for: Мorifice plate or Мlens identification.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

There are two lenses 44m and 44-2. On the first, the aperture rotates with clicks, on the second, smoothly (for a video it will be better). At 44-2, some grease is visible on the diaphragm blades — tell me this isn’t scary. Both lenses are taken off oddly. There is no difference. I just want to sell one and can’t decide which one. If the lubrication on the petals is not scary, then I would leave 44-2, because I like the smooth movement of the diaphragm.

    • Paul

If you unscrew the screws on the lens near the thread, you can remove the ring responsible for changing the diaphragms. Under it are 2 balls, which emit clicks when diaphragming. They are easily removed and the lens becomes silent and shoots video perfectly.

Helios 44m 2/58 lens suitable for Canon EOS 1100D Do I need an adapter?

    • HF

      An adapter is required.
Now on my 1100 it’s just the 44th)

      • EC

Does the camera focus itself or manually?

        • Matthew

Himself, the built-in ultrasonic motor and stabilization are activated.

          • Sergei

Very funny)) And also screams “Akhtung” when the shutter is released.

            • Matthew

Only if the adapter series Art ;-)

  • Alexander

It remains unclear how 44M relates to the 44M-x series.
Is this the first in a series or stand alone. And what, accordingly, are the differences between them.

  • Igor

    Will fit Olympus Pen

    • Jury

It is easily installed through the adapter, given the crop of FR 116. And yet, on such a matrix, the edges of the image captured by the lens go beyond the frame, taking with them all the flaws characteristic of the edge of the image.

  • Maria

I have a canon 500D, do not tell me which adapter is needed for the helios-44m 2/58 lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Need M42 to Canon EOS adapter.

  • Antonov Anton

I have Helius 44m on Nikon D3100, I get photos with a glow around the edges, how to fix the problem?

  • Ўladzimir Alyaksandraў

Hello! .. please tell me how to solve the problem of tight running of the focusing ring. Sometimes it feels like I will tear it from the nx300 along with the mount. Thanks.

    • AK

Itself faced such a problem. Everything was decided by almost complete disassembly of the lens with the removal of dried grease. Along the way, it turned out to achieve infinity with the Nikon D3100 using an adapter without a lens.

  • Scum83

How inattentively everyone reads your reviews! And in the comments the same question!
Almost all Soviet lenses with M42 mount CAN be remade for Nikon. Yandex Google and YouTube will help you. Check out a couple of sites. Soviet lenses metal and glass. breaking them is quite difficult. The only thing that you need to carefully unscrew the small screws and try not to drop anything inside. During the year I bought the d90 myself, I bought about 15 lenses. 10 of them are Soviet. he altered many himself (Zenitar 1.7 / 50, Volna9, Jupiter 37) from the tools usually you need a small watch screwdriver / for technology and a little more, tweezers (better L-shaped with small lips, a folding knife in the manner of a Swiss (it is convenient for them to twist the lens blocks) a couple files (a triangular rasp with a fine notch (you can use sandpaper) and a rasp for removing the "extra" millimeter on a penny of the bayonet. (which does not give infinity basically). very good if there is a vice, a grinder and a caliper and for serious modifications a drill and glue in the manner of cosmofen (such an expensive superglue, well, or epoxy resin) (you can, well, for prevention, a “pear”, a couple of cloths for optics, paper (masking) tape,
that's all. half of the optics will require only a screwdriver, and a file. no exotic, most have it all, well, or you can ask your friends.
PS nikon / m42 adapters are also different in thickness - it's better to take the thinnest one without a lens! the main thing is that the paint holds well. since the most expensive thing I saw in a photo shop cost around 1500 rubles. despite the fact that it is a centimeter and a half thick and all duralumin (not dyed) this will not work - wake up knocking on the subject of the photograph with a lens)) take Chinese for 300-500 rubles. Do not bother with chips - they must be adjusted for each lens + they are not made very well - it will be difficult then to screw the power into the camera bayonet (I say how that broke such a chip in 3-5 installations into the camera with careful use)

Well, like that. good luck in customizing!

  • Scum83

in general, m42 lenses are usually either unscrewed from the back of the bayonet - there are 3 or 4 screws of the m2..4 type (Helios 44m-x for example) and there are also small screws on the focusing-diaphragm ring or just the front part is screwed into the back. unscrew the focusing ring to infinity and firmly grab the focuser and the aperture ring, turn on (this is how Jupiter9 understands, almost all helios) just read the websites and forums to have an idea of what and where to turn. it's not really difficult! labor lesson grade 8! )). the main thing is to close the lenses tightly so that no one gets inside, does not scratch (especially the back one - since traces on it - are better shown in the frame). and not to spin the lens to the last detail is useless.
if it should spin, and not spin, it is in 80% of cases thickened tightly old Soviet grease. it can also be replaced. again, you can find it yourself, read-not re-read information on the Internet!

  • Vyacheslav

There are pictures made by him on the canon http://fotki.yandex.ru/users/slava76-bww/view/659131?page=2

  • Zenur

Arkady, please tell me how can I install the adapter myself on this gel and remake it to infinity?

  • Zenur

    And I also have a NIKON D3100

  • Nastya

Help. urgently. I need your help. decided to re-arrange helios, as a result, the diaphragm ring fell out, and with it two balls. What should I do now??? where are these balls and how to assemble back ???

    • Ilya

The balls stand so that the aperture takes fixed values (when changing the aperture, the balls fall into the corresponding grooves and a click is heard).
I also disassembled such a lens and lost the balls, but this does not matter. Just without them, the aperture ring rotates smoothly and you can set absolutely any value, not just fixed ones. The only thing is that the ring does not hang out and the stroke has little resistance, I put strips of foil on both sides.

  • Vadim

can anyone write or give a link how to achieve infinity on the G-44M?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Ask the question correctly. Which camera?

  • Vadim

    Nikon D310 Camera

  • Kirill

Please tell me, and when remaking 44M to infinity (rear block shift), will its optical properties deteriorate ??

  • anonym

everywhere it is said that if you put the Helios 44m on a digital SLR camera, you will get an excellent portrait portrait. I put it on my canon 600d, but I can’t focus on my faces, it’s just a macro shot, why? maybe because of crop?

    • Michael

Apparently the matter is in the lens, everything should work well. I bought the other day I’m not overjoyed, just get used to it, you need to adjust the exposure manually when closing the aperture.

  • Valery

I have Helios 44M MS KMZ. There is practically no information about this variety, at least I have not found. Who knows something about him, tell me.

  • Misha

And what’s better, please tell me. 44m or 44-2 I want to take 450d for myself under the canon, of course with an adapter, but I can’t decide

    • Denis

      I filmed with both ...
I prefer 44m he has contrast in the image (but this is a personal opinion)

  • Andrei

My Helios 44M on the Canon 20D gives a 1: 1 picture both through the viewfinder and in the photo, like on the old Zenith TTL. But the crop of my canona 1,6 then the lens is obtained as 1,6 X 58 = 92,8 mm. Why doesn’t bring the photographed object closer?

  • Denis

    Hello.
I put Helios 44m on the canon 500d through an adapter with a chip. In Live Veiw mode, the image on the screen is dark and the photos are normal. if you twist the shutter so that the screen displays a normal image, then the photos will turn out to be amazing.
what could be the problem? how to fix.
    ps
With a whale lens, everything is fine.

  • GT

Regarding the jumping aperture, how does it work on modern Nikons (Nikon D5100, specifically)?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The Helios-44m 58mm F2.0 aperture will not work on Nikons.

      • GT

how then to work with her? on the outer ring?

      • GT

        and in general, jumping?

  • anonym

tell me how it will work on the Nikon d5100?

  • Peter

Arkady, tell me please, why on Nikon7100 + Helios44m I don’t remove it anyway, the aperture writes 1.8, and the focal length is 35mm

    • Arkady Shapoval

Menu settings Lenses without a CPU, or improperly programmed EXIF into a dandelion (if the lens is with it).
