How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.

Сonclusion

HELIOS-44M 2/58 - a good modification of the older versions of Helios-44 with good sharpness, unusual twisting of the background. The main difference from previous versions was blinking aperture with 'M / A' switch to select aperture control mode. There are two versions of what exactly the letter 'M' in the lens name stands for: Мorifice plate or Мlens identification.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

    Privit!
I cringe with such an objectiv on a kenon with an unpredictable ring) having recently remembered that the diaphragm is not up to the point of being curled up, without a beast of respect, and without winding it on a macro)) knowing the shank, for a good reason, the mechanism is not up to the point it is possible to close the diaphragm to the end in the buddy position of the switch of the cot and the cage (holders) ... knowing that attachment, and the system of diaphragms in the operating system is fixed so that the diaphragm normally responded to the springs of the crank )

  • Maria

But is such a lens suitable for example to the Nikon D7000?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Any, in more detail in the Soviet optics section.

  • Sergei

All this is good. I bought an adapter. I tried Helios 44-2. Did not like. There is nothing in it for which you can refuse automatic equipment. Putting Soviet lenses on Nikon is a step back, it's yesterday!

    • Arkady Shapoval

A step back is to rely on technique, not skill.

  • Vova

Absolutely agree with you Apkady. I think Sergey will return to the manual owl .. optics)))

Good afternoon, Arkady! I have almost not used Helios 44m 2/58 from Zenith TTL, I think I’ll try it with Nikon 5100. I plan to use households through the adapter without a lens for portrait shooting, well, maybe for the video. Question: What is the maximum focusing distance available without a lens in the adapter (well, at least approximately)?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      About 2 meters.

      • Konstantin

Thanks for the answer! The question is continued. I looked on the Internet and found an opportunity to buy ARSAT 81N, they write that it is new. At a price (with the purchase of a dandelion) it goes up to 1,5 thousand rubles. more expensive than the adapter for Helios 44 (with a lens and a chip). Do you think it makes sense to bother with Helios 44 or take ARSAT 81N?

        • Konstantin

Here I stumbled upon an article stolen from your site. Images are loaded from your site. http://dryk.info/publ/13-1-0-413_

          • Arkady Shapoval

            There are many of those.

        • Arkady Shapoval

          I would take Helios-81n (Arsat 50 \ 2).

          • Konstantin

            Thank you!

I took a different type from the familiar for the test. The maximum number of diaphragms 1.4 is sewn into the new one in the warehouse of the warehouse 2.0

    • Arkady Shapoval

I am a proponent of using adapters without chips. Of course, there will be no confirmation of focus, but exposure metering will be.

  • Ira

Hello Arkady. The lens you are looking at reads “Helios-44m 2/58” and also shows something. What is it? On my same Helios another image

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is a sign of the manufacturer.

Good afternoon, I need to put the Salyut-S lens on Canon, for this (as you write) I need to use two types of adapter: Salyut C / Pentacon 6 plus Pentacon 6 / Canon EOS, since you can connect two identical adapters Pentacon 6?, Because for this you need one adapter to represent the rear part of the lens, and the other - the bayonet on the carcass - it's like in connectors, there is a "dad" - which is inserted into the "mom", but in your case it turns out that you need to connect two the same shank, or am I not catching up with something ...

  • Vladimir

Good evening! Please tell me, I found Helios 44m on a dusty shelf and would like to put it on the Nikon D7000 through an adapter without a lens and use it as a portrait portrait! Tell me, can I focus at a sufficient distance to shoot a portrait?

    • Arkady Shapoval

You will get a half-length portrait - no more.

  • Vladimir

well not bad! Tell me why there is infinity on Canon, but is there a problem with Nikon? What can be done?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Due to the working distance. You can use an adapter with a lens, or grind the lens.

  • Vladimir

Tell me, how can I sharpen this lens on Nikon and how to calculate how many mm you need to get rid of?

  • I AM)

What will be better than Helios 44m or 44-2?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The lens that is best preserved will be better.

  • Anna

Arkady, please tell me, there are different icons on the lenses. In the first photo on the lens there is a collecting lens icon, and in the photo with a Zenit camera there is a prism icon. Parents of physics, so I know what it is, but I don't know how it affects the properties of the lens. How are they different and which ones are better?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      These are logos of manufacturers.

      • Anna

        Thank you.

  • berlon

long-playing topic)) I found here in England-presented me this lens at a flea market) I think I’ll leave it for the m4 / 3 format of the camera .. which I’ll buy

  • Eugene

Hello Arkady! I have a question for you: I have a G-44M (with a programmable adapter) and a Canon 7D. On an open hole, the shots are excellent. I close the aperture at 8-11 and set the same on the camera (shooting in aperture priority) and you have underexposed photos. What's wrong ? Or shoot only with an open hole? Thanks in advance for your reply!

  • Tatyana

Good day, Arkady! Can you please tell me why the Helios-44M diaphragm control mode switch M / A and how to use it?

  • Jury

Hello, I took to try Helios 44 M and an adapter, I plug it in until it clicks, and the Nikon D5000 camera reports that the lens is not connected - what could this mean?

  • Sergei

I wanted to ask, is it just me this lens does not focus to infinity, or is it a dilemma because of the adapter? And is it possible to somehow fight this, or is it just necessary to have another lens of some sort, because it is not realistic to shoot a landscape with this camera ...

  • Sergey M

Thank you for the review of Helios 44m. I like this lens as a portrait.
I tried the lens from Smena (broke the Smena and stuck it to the adapter) Triplet “T-43” 4/40 on nx1000 is very sharp at aperture of 5.6-8. I also tried the lens from the industrial gull 69-2.8 / 28, but he did not particularly like the strong vignetting even on crop 1.5. And so if you don’t look at the edges pretty well. I wrote about these lenses here, because I could not find where. I also tried the 800 mm school telescope, the relative aperture is somewhere around 4. The magnification is certainly good, but something is still small and brief.

  • Ilya

I liked the jump on it, but how can I attach it to Nikon? And what is the best way to redo infinity? There are still 44-2 but at infinity they washed not childishly and some kind of control is not like that for him.

  • Elizabeth

Hello! Can you please tell me, is there autofocus on the 44M Helios or only manual? and what do the A and M buttons on the lens mean? I put A, then M - no difference

    • Arkady Shapoval

Not a single Soviet lens has auto focus. Mode A is responsible for automatic iris control, M is responsible for manual iris control.

  • Ilya

I got a fix for Nikon. He simply blew the entire mechanism of automatic diaphragm to hell, put a rubber ring about 2 - 5 millimeters on the naked intestines of the lens, carefully put it on glue and on top, on a rubber gasket, put a simple M42 ring. A very good lens. Incredibly comfortable and beautiful.

  • Vova

I have a Helios 44m, and on it does infinity start from 4 meters? What is it, can I fix this?

  • Sergei

there are many helios 44 different models prices from 1700 to 3000 r per lens mail boss.wret@mail.ru Voronezh write or call 9003023540

  • Hleb

the other day I acquired a 44m truth the look is not much different, the front of the picture is clean where the little circle and arrow I have is a covering arrow (who knows explain what is different) so my problem is that the photos turn out somehow soapy I don’t know the muddy and bright colors of what then I don’t even know how to explain honestly, I don’t know how to help, before that I used industrial (
