How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with mounting thread M42 (M42 X 1 / 45.5), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this it is enough to choose the right adapter (adapter). You do not need to carry out any additional steps to modify the lens.

The cheapest adapters can be found at Aliexpress.com... There are adapters (adapters) with a chip that provide more convenience during shooting, usually chips are used to confirm focus and / or metering exposure, and form the correct EXIF. The chip does not affect the image quality in any way.

For some SLR cameras (for example, with the Nikon F-mount), you need to use adapters with a corrective lens, which allows you to focus correctly at all focusing distances. For any mirrorless cameras, such a lens is not needed, and the adapter is a simple decorated hollow metal tube with an appropriate mount.

For SLR cameras

  1. Canon: For cameras Canon EOS with bayonet mount EF / EF-S need an M42-Canon EOS adapter, such an adapter with a chip can be found herewithout chip here.
  2. NIKON: For cameras Nikon DX / FXas well as for cameras Fujifilm и Kodak with a Nikon F mount, you need an M42-Nikon F adapter, you can buy such an adapter without a lens and a chip here, with a lens without a chip herewith chip without lens here, with lens and chip here. Why a lens? Why chip?
  3. PENTAX: For Pentax cameras with K mount, you need an M42-Pentax K adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.
  4. SONY/MINOLTA: For cameras with a Sony / Minolta A mount, you need the M42-Sony A adapter, you can find such an adapter without a chip at this linkwith a chip at this link.
  5. OLYMPUS/PANASONIC/LEICA: For cameras with a 4/3 bayonet mount (not to be confused with Micro 4/3!) You need an M42-4 / 3 adapter, you can buy such an adapter here.

For mirrorless cameras

  1. SONY: For cameras with 'E'/'FE' mount series SonyNEX и Sony Alpha you need an adapter M42-Sony E (aka M42-Sony Nex), you can find it at this link. An autofocus adapter is also available for these cameras. Techart PRO Leica M - Sony E Autofocus Adapterwhich can be found at this link.
  2. OLYMPUS / PANASONIC / KODAK / XIAOMI: For cameras with a bayonet mount Micro 4/3 (Micro 4:3) you need an adapter M42-Micro 4/3, you can find it at this link.

Сonclusion

HELIOS-44M 2/58 - a good modification of the older versions of Helios-44 with good sharpness, unusual twisting of the background. The main difference from previous versions was blinking aperture with 'M / A' switch to select aperture control mode. There are two versions of what exactly the letter 'M' in the lens name stands for: Мorifice plate or Мlens identification.

Familiarity with the Soviet Helios brand lenses I recommend starting with an inexpensive and common lens Helios-44-2 2/58 (aka HELIOS-44-2 2/58). The following links can look at modern lenses Zenitar и HELIOS.

    Great review! But as always)

article on how to make infinity on these lenses without a lens

  • Sergei

    Good afternoon.
You have not written anything about focusing on infinity with this lens on Nikon DSLRs. Have you managed to achieve infinity with your D200? If so, how ?!

    Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The article refers to rezdel Soviet optics, everything is written there. Given that I have a KP-42 / N, it is logical that I worked with the loss of infinity.

  • Sergei

    ))))
While writing - have already answered.
    Thank you.

  • Great lens. I use it myself (I shoot video on DSLR), I can’t get enough of it. It works poorly with back-end, as it were, a drawback, but at the same time it is its advantage. Here is the video shot with this lens http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvTW9Zvfd-w&context=C4db7668ADvjVQa1PpcFPUGsh-NQ9duuC79bOhYDigMnZJN_w8QwU=
The review is wonderful. Thanks to your site, I learned a lot about Soviet lenses. )

  • Glory

    Arkady!
And why didn’t you mention in the review a very interesting arrangement of the 8-blade aperture in the lens unit of the lens? It is very different from the diaphragms of the same G44-2, G44M-4, etc., visually it looks like it was installed on its backside before !!!! I think readers will be interested to know about this fact.

    • Arkady Shapoval

And you know, I don’t notice everything and I know)

  • Versions of G-44M from KMZ are preferable to Valdai (higher production culture).

    • Leonid

those. glass with chamfers in a matte form is better not to take?

  • I apologize for not saying this right away: there were a lot more “Valdai” products than brothers from all other manufacturers put together. It was the tsunami of their appearance on the world market that brought down the reputation of all G-44s below the plinth. One of the "trademark" features of the "Valdai" are completely white bevels of the lenses (clearly visible above on NIKON), which sharply increase light scattering.

  • Leonid

!!! a very interesting moment !!! you hit 44m, remove the back cover, remove all the guts from it, give it to the turner, he cuts 1,5 mm and you get a full-fledged manual for Nikon with focus to infinity, well, walk within 3-5 metro and not 1.5

    • helios

I thought so too and the lens came kapets. It stupidly fell apart because the thickness of the back wall is .0.25mm. And the turner will not be able to do anything. Option only 2. 1 use on the canon and do nothing else. 2- install thinner adjustment rings and it may be possible to focus on the meters 5. (for Nikon)

  • Leonid

    photo in contact Leonid Leontyev

    • offer

And how in contact pass through the pictures if there are 68 people Leonid Leontyev

  • Leonid

in the exchange, two instances differ in the icons on the flange of what they are talking about, I do not know!

  • Oleg Muravitsky

I use a 44-M like the one in the photo on a Samsung NX11 with an adapter. Works great in all combinations, including infinity. Sharper and more detailed than the whale 18-55, focusing is a little difficult, because the diaphragm ring is tight and there is no auxiliary ring (the “jump rope” on my device is useless), but it is easier to focus it visually than the same Mir-1V, you don't even need to use the magnification - the picture starts to “ring” at the correct focus. Very good for portraits and product photography, and upside down (thanks to the flip adapter) makes a macro lens. Used both with macro-rings and with PZF furs - everywhere this “glass” leaves only positive impressions. Purely subjective - the picture is very pleasant in terms of color reproduction, the photos from it are easy to distinguish from those taken with whale optics. The only “but” limiting its use is that with a crop of 1,5, an EGF of 87 mm comes out. small angle of view does not allow shooting large objects and scenes at close range. Therefore, if I find something else of the same light and high quality, but at 24-35 mm, I will be happy and completely satisfied.

    • Oleg Muravitsky

No, I lied, the logo on it is different, I have a KMZ production glass.

      • Anna

Hello Oleg! Tell me please, Sa wrote that the jump rope is useless on the NX ... Does this mean that this unit can only shoot with this lens with a fully open aperture? Thanks!

  • Andrei

I’ve been using this lens for 4 months now. Generally, it’s a good impression. The only difficulty is sometimes focusing in low light on a clamped aperture. your money is a good lens!

  • Jury

Recently I had a Helios-44M manufactured in 80 years, an exported version of the Krasnogorsk plant. The aperture is 8 blades, but the most interesting thing is that at values of 2,8 - 4 it has the shape of a “circular saw.” In reviews, I met such aperture in Zeiss Have you ever met such a diaphragm? The lens is made very high quality and soundly.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Many Soviet lenses have a circular saw. This is normal.

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

really like his twisted bokeh. the main thing is that the background is not empty and there is something to spin. very nice creative portraiture for leisurely shooting.

  • Olga

Hello Arkady! Thanks for the review. Help me to understand. I have a Nikon D5100 with a kit lens 18-55. I found a HELIOS-44M 2/58 lens at my grandfather. So which adapter do I need - M42 with lens or KP-A / N with or without lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

You can either one or the other. M42-Nikon without a lens will not give infinity when focusing, M-42-Nikon with a lens will give focus to infinity but slightly spoil the image.

  • Vladislav

Good day! Recently I bought a Helios 44m and an adapter with a lens. I put it on the Nikon d3000 and I can’t understand whether I can’t catch the focus, or whether it’s such a lens. Example photo:http://pikucha.ru/i9jaa there is no sharpness at all, both when focusing on infinity and when shooting a portrait. Tell me what to do. Photo info: ISO 100, f / 4, 1/640. With aperture 2 even worse. What to do?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      1. Bad lens in adapter
      2. Poor focus
      3. The lens is broken
      Most likely the first option.

  • Ivan

Hello Arkady! Please tell me, is the Helios-44M lens suitable for the NIKON d3100? If suitable, which adapter is needed?

    • Arkady Shapoval

If it were suitable, an adapter would not be needed, and one of the adapters is needed: M42-Nikon, M42-Nikon with a ninja, M42-Nikon with a chip, M42-Nikon with a ninza and a chip. Best last.

      • Ivan

Please tell me, what does the lens and chip contribute to?
It's just that I'm not very aware of it. I have this lens (helios-m) and nikon d3100 with a whale lens, and I would not really like to splurge on an expensive portrait.

        • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is more than described in detail in the Soviet lenses section.

  • Alex

I use Helios-44M, not bad, for leisurely shooting and for portraits the most, here is an example of a photo from it http://img-fotki.yandex.ru/get/6522/25637851.0/0_8a5c8_2a55c13f_L

  • Andrei

Please tell me, if I buy an adapter with a lens on Helios-44m, will the lens wash the background just like without a lens in portrait photos?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      yes it will.

  • Knowing

Forgive me for asking the question again, although everything has already been described and read in the Soviet lenses section: what does the chip in the adapter give for the quality of the photo, and what is the lens. Who is not difficult to skinte links to photos with options for various adapters who have it. I am sure this will be interesting to everyone who is tormented with the choice of adapter. Thanks in advance.

    • Arkady Shapoval

All adapters without a lens do not affect image quality. All lens adapters spoil image quality.

      • Knowing

Thank you very much for your reply. And what can the chip give in the adapter?

        • Arkady Shapoval

The answer is fully described in the section on Dandelion Lushnikov.

  • Oleg

Arkady, as I understand it, so that the character was in focus, you need to approach and vice versa move away to get into focus?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, if there is no infinity.

  • Igor

Hello! Which lens is better than 44-2 or 44m?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Almost the same.

      • Igor

        What do you think?

        • Arkady Shapoval

It all depends on the instances, their age battered. 44m-2 is slightly better.

  • Kate

    please tell me, I have a 44m helios lens, 2-58 ... like 8 aperture blades ...
I bought an adapter with a lens. but I can’t achieve a twisted boke. why?
    give some advice)

    • Arkady Shapoval

You need to shoot at F / 2.0 with focus values close to MDF and a motley background. When focusing on infinity and / or closed diaphragms, there will be no torsion of bokeh.
