Overview of Jupiter 11 under M39

Jupiter 11 one of the very good portrait soviet lenses. I put it to the vote on best soviet portrait lens.

There is a very large number of different lenses of the Jupiter-11 brand, you can additionally look into the review JUPITER-11 1: 4 F = 13,5cm P with mount Contax-Kiev RF.

Focal length: 135mm
Maximum aperture: F4.0 (closes to F22.0)
Number of aperture blades: 12
The weight: 300-400
Minimum Focus Distance: 1.4 meters (indicated on the lens)

The lens presented in this review is from an M39 SLR camera. Jupiter-11 has a classic Zonnar (from Sonnar) scheme of 4 lenses in 3 groups. The parent of the Jupiter 11 optical design was the Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar T 135mm f4.0 lens.

Jupiter-11 exists in different versions, for more details about the Jupiter-11 lineup you will find the review of its brother - Jupiter-11A.

Lens pros:

  1. About small dimensions - both the weight and the length of the lens are not great at all.
  2. Good image quality with the popular zonar blur of the background.

  3. A huge number of aperture blades, which is 12 pieces and allows you to get even bokeh, which is very popular when shooting portraits.
  4. Metal casewhich will serve for many more years. My lens was produced in 1962, as evidenced by the first two digits on the marking of the lens, while it looks at 100.

  5. Allows use on full-frame cameras. On the cropped matrix of mine Nikon D90 (and the rest of the cropped cameras) there is no vignetting at any aperture value.
  6. The focus ring rotates all 360 degrees, providing the smoothest focusing possible.

 Disadvantages that I have identified:

  1. The diaphragm has only fixed values of 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, and not a smooth stroke, like Jupiter-11A.
  2. There is no possibility of pre-setting the aperture, which appeared in Jupiter-11A.
  3. A rather small depth of field due to the combination of 135 mm focal length and aperture F / 4.
  4. The lens does not hold well office and side light, it’s difficult to find a lens hood and it doesn’t help much.
  5. Not really big aperture, torn only F / 4.0 is not always on hand, for example, when I took a photo in the shade under the trees, I had to set the shutter speed at ISO 400 to 1 \ 100 s at F / 4.0. Take a look at the Jupiter-11A review, there sample photos were taken indoors with a lot of light, but still F / 4 is too small to take off.
  6. Rare thread 40.5 mm under the filter, my usual protective filter 52 mm did not fit this lens.

How to use with modern cameras?

Lenses with an M39 mounting thread (for SLR cameras, M39 X 1 / 45.2), such as the lens from this review, are very easy to use on almost any modern digital camera (both SLR and mirrorless), for this you just need to choose correct adapter. The cheapest adapters can be found aliexpress.com

For use on modern digital SLR cameras Canon EOS need M39-Canon EOS adapter, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) here. Also, an adapter M39-Canon EOS can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Canon EOS + M39-M42. Detailed information on the use of such lenses with any Canon EOS cameras will find here.

An adapter is required for use on Nikon SLR cameras M39-Nikon F, you can buy such an adapter (adapter) without a lens and a chip here. Also, one adapter M39-Nikon F can be easily replaced with two adapters: M42-Nikon F + M39-M42. Detailed information on the use of such lenses with any modern Nikon cameras will find here.

How to use this lens with cameras of other systems (Pentax, Sony, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, Samsung, Sigma etc.) - ask in the comments and you will be prompted. If you have any questions on compatibility and adapters, ask in the comments (comments do not require any registration at all, any user can add a comment).

Personal impressions

The lens gives a good picture, great for portraits, the depth of field is quite small. In most cases chromatic aberration not large and almost invisible. Distortion is not observed. Max open f / 4.0 aperture is well suited for shooting. This lens does not pursue sharpness, but simply gives a nice picture. Jupiter-11 creates moderate contrast in the picture, for printing you need to tighten in the editor. In principle, a lot of things in the picture and functionality are similar to Jupiter-37A.

Flowers on Jupiter 11

Flowers on Jupiter 11

Jupiter 37-A has a diaphragm one third more than Jupiter-11. The optical design of the lenses is the same. I did not find differences in the picture between my instances on the same apertures. Jupiter-37A, however, is with multi-enlightenment and has a smooth diaphragm stroke. Nevertheless, shooting with the 37th Jupiter is more pleasant, since it has a more classic black color and does not attract attention. By the way, in my survey about the best Soviet portrait lens, Jupiter-37A takes the second place, lagging behind only the legendary Helios-40-2.

I really liked the size of Jupiter-11, which is much smaller than the popular Jupiter 37-A. See for yourself the difference in size between Jupiter-11 and Jupiter-37A.

Conclusions

Nice short telephoto lens suitable for portrait photography, the picture is very similar to the well-known Jupiter-37A. When used on cropped cameras, it may not be very convenient to use.

I am delighted!! I especially like the photos with the girl ... very good, lively, real !!! I love those !!

    • Arkady Shapoval

It's so funny, I write a review for a long time and diligently, looking for all the nuances of the lens, and at the end everyone looks only at the photos - this is how it should be :) Thanks for the comment.

    • Valery

Thank you very much. Not only photographs, but the article itself is very sensible. Yesterday I also bought myself a Nikon D90 with 18-55mm. I have a large number of Soviet optics: Mir-1; Jupiter-11A; Jupiter-9; Jupiter-12; Helios-44M; Zenitar-M; Industar-61L / Z, etc.- once used all this arsenal at the Zenith, FED, did not know what to do with them. Now, inspired by your photos, I decided to tackle their alteration. Some lenses: Mir-1, Jupiter-9, Industar-61L / Z-I do not know how to remake without a compensation lens, which I do not want to use. Maybe you give some advice? All optics are excellent. Once in Soviet times, he calibrated and tested them on the optical bench OSK-2TSL.
      Thank you in advance.
      Creative success!

Remaking is quite difficult. I can’t tell anything sensible.

Thanks for the good review and helpful comparison ...

    Photos are very beautiful !!!

  • Andrei

The other day I bought myself the same Jupiter 11 (M39) 1964. release, tried on Canon 30D (with converters) - I'm not overjoyed! ;ABOUT)

  • Bright Thought

Great review! Short and clear, thanks.
I will add from myself: in the market, Jupiter-11 is about three (!) Times cheaper than its brother Jupiter 37-A. As you rightly noted, there is not much difference - so why pay more? Except for a smooth aperture. Good, indestructible glass for centuries. I am sure she will celebrate her centenary with excellent shots and will continue to delight photography lovers. Unfortunately, the inoperative autoexposure metering coupled with this lens and the non-autofocus make it unusable for work. Only a hobby remains, but isn't that enough? :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Quite enough. On Kenon and on Prof. Nikon, the metering works with a bang. For a hobby and for professional photography is quite enough, I managed to shoot part of the wedding walk on it - people were very happy with the result. A photographer friend of mine does an excellent job at leisurely photo shoots on Jupiter-37A, why overpay for Nikkor 80-200 :)

  • Bright Thought

And now - really HUGE thanks! Naturally, exposure metering works! Somehow I didn’t bother to check it, I thought it was incompatible ... How much fiddling with the exposure had to be by eye… Cool, there will be something to do)) In general, if possible, take Soviet glasses. It is inexpensive but very interesting. Not everyone can afford to experiment with their own lenses, but here 10-20 dollars (maximum 70 for Granite 80-200) for analogs is not bad. Success to everyone!

  • The

By the way, I note that the stroke of the aperture ring with fixed positions is still a plus, since there is no jump in the lens, so thanks to clicks, you can close the aperture after focusing without taking your eyes off the viewfinder, probably knowing the values, and intermediate values are set there without problems.

  • Catherine

    Good afternoon!
Thanks to the author for such an interesting and useful post! After reading your review, I wanted to purchase such a lens !!!
Please tell me which adapter is needed in order to put it on the Nikon D5100 ?! Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

It is under this one that you need two infantrymen M39-M42 and M42-Nikon, as they are called, indicated in the article. See the subheading “How to use with modern digital SLR cameras?”

    • Kostya

      Abo shukati ob'єktiv Jupiter-11A.

  • Alexey

By the way, Jupiter 11 with M39x1, has a working length of not 44.5mm as with m42x1, but 44.2 (subtracted from the wiki)
And to "infinity" (on Canon 1000D) it does not reach a little (already convinced). We'll have to remove 0,3-0,5 mm from the adapter ring ...
I hope that everything will fall into place.

  • Sergei

Hello! Tell me, and Jupiter-11 from the rangefinder Zorkiy-4 can be adapted to sovr. DSLR? And which is better? Will work? Thanks!!!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Attaching is not difficult, but will not work on any SLR camera. A major rework won't help either. The only ones where you can use it in digital are the mirrorless APS-C SONY NEX, and the Olympus 4/3. More detailed in the section Soviet optics on Nikon.

  • Sergei

Thank you Another question. I sold my Nikon5000. I was going to buy 7000. And by chance it hung on the topic of Sov.objectives + modern mirrors. Even bought Jupiter-21M and G44-2 in addition. There are still their G44-6 and Yu-9. Now in thought what to take NIKON, CANON, PENTAX? It is for use with owls. lenses. Thanks.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The Pentax system is the best for manual optics under M42, further Kenon, and the most inconvenient system in general is Nikon. But this is all relatively relative, since the same Helios-81N can be used as a native Nikonovsky with automatic iris control and native EXIF counter.

  • Victor

Today I tested Jupiter 11A on my Nikon D5100. Liked. The picture is sharp enough, conveys the volume well, pleasant blurring of the PP and ZP. Small errors in setting the exposure and WB when shooting in RAW are easily eliminated when converting the file. A small depth of field on an open aperture requires certain focusing skills, but still these requirements are lower than, for example, TAIR 11A. In general - a good lens for an acceptable (250 UAH) price for leisurely thoughtful photography.
An amusing incident happened during testing. Tried shooting a landscape with a hyperfocal distance setting. At that moment, from behind the back, there was a noise from the flapping of the wings of a flock of swans (they winter here). Without any restructuring of the camera and lens (due to the time shortfall) I took 4 frames in years - and everything worked out. The only pity is that the sky today resembled last year's snow. So, under certain conditions, this lens is quite possible to shoot dynamic scenes.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thank you for a good, practical comment :)

  • Catherine

Thanks for the great site! My question is, I recently bought a Nikon D 3100 camera, and I want to try the Soviet lens in portrait shooting, tell me if Jupiter 11 is suitable for my camera? I understand that you still need an adapter, but which one with the chip?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, as it is written in the article M39-M42 and KP-42 / N. I advise you to take a Jupiter-11A lens without an adapter instead of Jupiter-37.

  • Eugene

I would like to add to the article that there are versions of Jupiter 11 with a preset aperture. I came across just that.
Yes, and there is a smooth stroke of the aperture ring, if you make a preset at 22, the pavda without values: D

    • Arkady Shapoval

Thanks for the useful information. I will include this remark in the review.

  • sloventy

Hello everyone. I recently acquired the zenith -E and Jupiter-11, put it together through a makeshift ring. The results are incredible. I suspect a mysterious power is hidden in this Soviet technique. I hold a camera in my hands and rejoice like a child. Kodak Gold 200 film.

  • Alexander

Good day! Thanks for the review Arkady. I bought a Sony NEX-5N for Soviet manual optics. At first I worked with the Pentax K20D, but I liked Sony more and as it was more convenient for me! Thanks to your review, I refused to purchase Jupiter 37A and bought Jupiter 11. Thanks again !!!

  • Slam

Arkady, tell me, I'm afraid to be a complete layman: Jupiter-11 machine, how will it behave on crop? Does it make sense to put it?

    • Arkady Shapoval

The machine from Kiev-15 without alteration to put on the Central Control Commission will not be able to deliver. Alteration may be more expensive than the lens itself. The crop will lead as described in the article.

  • Slam

    Thank you.

  • Violetta

Arkady please tell me where you buy adapters ??? I am not knowledgeable in this regard ... .. Thanks in advance!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I do not buy them, I bought once and I have enough. Any online store or sale advertisements.

  • Violetta

    Adapter needed for Canon 550D))

    • Arkady Shapoval

Well, I still need to know for what lens and for what purpose.

  • Violetta

Arkady thanks for the answer .. That is, adapters can be bought in any store and this thing is not the time of these lenses. Please tell me, I offer a choice of such lenses: Helios 44-2, two worlds of white grand prix, industrial 61 2,8 \ 50 , MS industrial 61 2,8 \ 50, MS helios 77m-4., As well as helios 44 black. Please tell me which one is better? Will this lens ruin the camera? I want to take pictures of the child, as well as landscapes. There are a lot of things that are known about modern lenses, but nothing about the Soviet ones .. Thank you for the created topic, I learned a lot.

    • Arkady Shapoval

All lenses are different. I would advise 77m-4. For a child, it is very difficult to do without an autofocus lens.

  • Andrei

Don't think of it as an advertisement, I just don't advise buying Chinese chips, which all sellers try to call “dandelions,” and Chinese EMF chips ARE NOT Dandelions !!! Programming instructions, technical support included, advice on setting up and using.
    http://filmprocess.ru/oduvanchik/ukr.htm

    • Eugene White

I use the Chinese without any problems. work stably with all glasses from the MIR-10 width to monsters such as ZM-5a / SA. On MTO-1000 they do not work because of aperture 10 ... but they should not be with such a hole. Sorry, but it’s proven by experience

  • Violetta

Thank you very much for the advice of Arkady, and also for creating such a wonderful blog. I bought Helios 44-2, at first of course nothing good came out, since the adapter is without a chip yet .. but then I got used to it! Great pictures are obtained and the bokeh really twists beautifully! And also the seller brought in 77m-4, but there is a little dust. . (a couple of dust particles.) Do you think this dust will greatly affect the quality of shooting and whether it can be removed somehow by disassembling the lens ??? Andrey, thank you for the link!

    • Arkady Shapoval

Dust will not greatly affect image quality. The main thing is that the rear lens is in good condition.

  • Eugene White

Often I read reviews on the site and compare with the available glasses. Something is fully confirmed, something is debatable (however, within the range of the specimens and years of release).
Regarding J11 and its harshness, the complete truth! frankly, soap and soap is rubbed, although soap is very appropriate.
In stock There is Yu-11 with M39 thread 64 years old and Yu-11A 75 years old. I shoot more with a more modern version, because I like it more in terms of color rendition and it is a little sharper - already at aperture 5,6 in the center it is sharp almost like a budget EF 18-135, but with the preservation of the proprietary bokeh and pattern.
11A also copes much better with side and back light, and a 52 mm thread simplifies the situation with the hood. (By the way! In the kit for mine was a native one, like a lens hood half the length of the frame, the lens was inside it. Just slamming!))

And 5 kopecks about the comparison of Ju11a and Yu37a. Despite the similar appearance, these are radically different lenses! in terms of application, the first is a pure portrait lens, the second is a short telephoto lens. Those who want to talk about this topic - belyaevrolevik@rambler.ru и http://vk.com/brodyaga_s_zemli (right here and photos from different glasses)

    And finally, IMHO
Jupiter-11 must be in the collection! when flat boring pictures from the series get bored quickly and simply - take U11 and you will be HAPPINESS! Even having 7 different 135 mm glasses, I don't want to sell or change such a rarity.
    a photo - http://cs5466.userapi.com/v5466135/1d8/CJhcWL2XD5c.jpg

  • Violetta

Thank you very much Arkady! Very valuable advice.

  • Olga

Arkady, thanks for the good review, the main thing is with photos, and what adapter (or what) is needed for Jupiter 11-M39 on Sony Nex-7? really liked :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

Most likely, it is easier to put on through two adapters: M39 + M42 and M42-Sony NEX. But the Chinese seem to be doing it right away with the M39 on the Sony Nex.
