What kind of animal?

The Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 VC USD A005NII is a classic 70-300mm telephoto lens for full frame cameras. These lenses are great for shooting outdoors, especially when you need to shoot something far away.

Similar, 'dark' telephoto lenses are very common and popular (in particular, due to the relatively low price), and almost every self-respecting manufacturer has its own model range of such lenses.

Tamron has been releasing autofocus telephoto lenses for a long time, the following is the most complete list of 70 (75) -300 / 4-5.6 models:

Some older Minolta / Sony camera lenses might have the prefix 'M' next to the model name, for example '672DM'. For Nikon / Canon / Pentax cameras, models have always been labeled with the single letter 'D', for example, '472D'.

Note that there are copies of Tamron lenses called 'Promaster', for example, Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300 EDO 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2)which is a copy Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) Model A17.

This review presents the most recent model in this line, with the full name on the bezel: 'Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 VC Ultrasonic Silent Drive', and on the box you can find a clarification - the inscription 'Model: A005NII' ...

Note that the Tamron A005 lens is available for three systems:

  • Canon - Model A005E (an overview of this model can be viewed here)
  • Sony - Model A005S (The version is called Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 USD A005 and does not have an integrated image stabilizer)
  • Nikon - Model A005NII (such as in this review)

Strange, but the A005 is not available for Pentax cameras.

Letter 'N'in the model name refers to the lens version for Nikon cameras. Designation 'NII'for the Nikon F mount version, it is analogous to the native' AF-S 'and' G 'type lenses. The 'NII' is not the second version of the lens, but simply a peculiar lens designation that means there is a built-in focus motor and no aperture ring.

In Tamron A005 many innovations:

  • this is the first Tamron lens with a USD type motor
  • this is the first Tamron XLD lens
  • this is the first lens in the 70 (75) -300 line, which belongs to the SP series
  • this is one of the first Tamron lenses supporting the Tamron VC integrated stabilization system

Is it really a copy?

I found the fact that the optical circuits of the Tamron A005 and Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM very similar. Both lenses have 17 optical elements in 12 groups.

In addition, the lenses have the same arrangement of low dispersion elements, the minimum focusing distance, the maximum magnification factor, the presence of internal focusing and the same movement of the frame of the body during a change in focal length. I could not find the exact information about the similarity of the optical schemes, you can leave your guesses in the comments.

Let me remind you that optical circuits Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6D and Tamron AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD DI Macro (model 362D, possibly other models) are completely identical.

Assembly

Tamron a005 well assembled, I did not notice any obvious backlashes or shortcomings. The lens body is made of high quality plastic. Lens is made in China.

The lens uses a plastic bayonet hood, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. On the copy from my review, the hood is very poorly fixed when installed in the opposite direction. In this position, at 70 mm, access to the zoom ring is lost. While changing the focal length, the lens hood moves with the trunk of the lens.

The focus and zoom rings are rubberized; the Tamron A005 has a metal mount. The lens does not suffer from spontaneous lengthening of the frame. The only thing I didn’t like when using the lens was an unpleasant, rough sound during the rotation of the focus ring, maybe this is a feature of the specimen that I visited.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called the 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust accumulating in the camera.

Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD

Stabilizer

Tamron A005 has Tamron built-in image stabilizer VC (Vvibration Compensation). Stated that the stabilizer can compensate 4 stops by shutter speed... (by the standards of Tamron). In numerical terms, this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 16 times slower than required by a lens without a stabilizer. For example, when shooting without the stabilizer of stationary objects, at a focal length of 300 mm, you can shoot at shutter speeds of 1/320 s or faster. With the gimbal on, you can theoretically shoot by 1/20 s. True, 4 feet is an exaggeration. The stabilizer works well, but it is far from 4 stops.

The gimbal can detect camera movement while shooting panoramas, but does not 'understand' when the camera is mounted on a tripod, so the gimbal should be turned off when shooting with a tripod. To switch the operating modes of the stabilizer, there is an 'On / Off' switch on the case.

When working with the lens at 300 mm focal length JVI the difference is clearly visible when the stabilizer is on and off. When sighting with the stabilizer on, the picture freezes and allows you to comfortably compose the frame. I got the impression that the Tamron A005 gimbal performs better during sighting than the Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM.

When turned on and off, the gimbal emits a characteristic clicking sound (similar to that of the Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 VC).

A stabilizer with similar efficiency is used in the model. A009.

Focusing

The Tamron A005 is the first Tamron lens to use USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) - ultrasonic quiet focusing motor. This innovation was timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Tamron.

Model A005 will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera. When using the lens on the camera Nikon D700 with focus module Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FX There were no problems with speed and focus accuracy. The lens focused accurately and rarely re-focused.

The body has an 'AF / MF' (auto focus / manual focus) switch to select the focus mode. The lens is declared to support Ftmf (Full Time Mannual Focus) - continuous manual focus control, which allows manual focusing in 'AF' mode without switching to 'MF' mode. But, as it turned out, this is not a complete analogue Nikon M / A (or other similar) FTMF mode only allows you to adjust the focus after the camera is focused. In focus mode AF-C this mode is useless.

Focusing speed is mixed and depends on the set focal length:

  • the lens focuses quickly at 70 mm of focal length, and the travel time from infinity to MDF and vice versa is similar to Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM.
  • at 300 mm of focal length, the lens focuses noticeably slower, and the focusing speed can be called average.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focus 'IF'('Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'). During zooming, the front lens leans forward but does not rotate. Thus, it is possible to use any filters without problems, for example polarizing or gradient.

The minimum focusing distance is 1.5 meters. Unfortunately, the Tamron A005 has the poorest 1: 4 magnification ratio of its predecessors. All previous versions had the 'Macro' prefix in their name, hinting at the possibility of macro photography, and their zoom ratio was better, ranging from 1: 3.9 to 1: 2.

The focus ring rotates to 135 degrees, when extreme positions are reached, it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus.

Tamron A005 has window with distance scale in meters and feet. There is no IPIG scale, as are tags for working in the infrared spectrum.

Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD

Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD

Diaphragm

The lens uses aperture with 9 rounded petals. On covered diaphragms you can get 18 ray stars from point light sources.

There are marks with a focal length on the zoom ring, the following is a list with the minimum numbers F available for these marks:

  • 70 mm - F / 4
  • 100 mm - F / 4.2
  • 135 mm - F / 4.5
  • 200 mm - F / 5.3
  • 300 mm - F / 5.6

Like most modern lenses, the Tamron A005 does not have an aperture control ring, all control is done using the camera controls.

Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD

Image quality

The Tamron A005 is the first Tamron lens to use XLD (eXbetween Low Dispersion). Declared that optical performance XLD close to fluorite, but personally I think that there is not much difference between XLD и LD. Also, Tamron A005 belongs to the line of SP (Super Performance) lenses with high performance typical of Tamron professional lenses. But, despite the low price and modest apertureThe Tamron A005 is not a true 'professional lens'.

On fully open apertures, Tamron A005 shows good sharpness in the center of the frame in the range of 70-200 mm and acceptable sharpness in the range of 200-300 mm. If you cover the aperture to F / 8, then in the range of 200-300 mm the center of the frame becomes quite sharp. The edges of the image on a full-format camera in the range of 70-200 mm are good at F / 8, and in the range of 200-300 mm at F / 11.

Lens showed good contrast and good resistance to side and back light.

Unfortunately, vignetting on completely open diaphragms was not without tangible. But, it is worth covering the diaphragm, as the vignette is noticeably reduced.

The distortion level is common for a similar lens. There is a small barrel-shaped distortion at 70 mm of focal length, which is replaced by a pillow-shaped distortion to 300 mm.

Chromatic aberrations well compensated, especially at 70 mm focal length.

In general, the lens showed good, and sometimes even good image quality.

My experience

I am pleasantly surprised by the performance of the Tamron A005. I used to use it for a long time Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM, and I can say for sure that optically Tamron A005 is at least no worse than native Nikkor. As indicated at the beginning of the review, these lenses have very similar optical schemes, and therefore I can assume that the Tamron A005 is a kind of processing of a successful native Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM.

Main differences between Tamron A005 and Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM

  • Nikon 70-300VR has a full focus mode Nikon M / A. The FTMF mode on the Tamron A005 is not so convenient.
  • Nikon 70-300VR has a rubber seal near the bayonet for protection against dust and moisture.
  • Nikon 70-300VR has a larger front lens diameter (67 mm vs 62 mm).
  • Nikon 70-300VR It has two modes of operation of the stabilizer to save battery power and more convenient operation in different situations.
  • Included with Nikon 70-300VR There is a velor cover.
  • Tamron A005 is 4 years newer than Nikon 70-300VR.
  • Tamron A005 is slightly lighter at the short end (F / 4 VS F / 4.5).
  • Tamron A005 is significantly cheaper and has a longer warranty.

Otherwise, the lenses are very similar. I would safely buy Tamron A005 instead Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM. Hopefully the Tamron A005 has a small variation in build quality and image-to-instance image.

EGF lens for Nikon DX cameras is 105-450mm. Tamron A005 analogue for Nikon DX cameras can be considered Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G ED VR IF SWM и Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G ED VR II. This Tamron A005 works wonderfully on cropped cameras and does not cause much inconvenience due to recalculation EGF. In the case of telephoto lenses crop factor cameras Nikon DX in most cases is only beneficial, as it allows you to increase EGF and reach even further :).

The Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD is a good lens with a good price / performance ratio. I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality and image quality that the lens creates. In my experience, the Tamron A005. optically no worse than a similar native lens - Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM. I recommend the Tamron A005 as an inexpensive telephoto lens with stabilizer.

Great review! It looks like Tamron has bypassed the “native” Nikkor in this case, if only the Sigma mechanics should be tightened up ..., it turns out that “third-party” rules!

  • Dream

I have been using the lens for 3 months. The lens is built perfectly, there are no scripts and it focuses the first time, it is not afraid of backlight, the sharpness in the center of the frame is excellent even at a focal length of 300 mm at f8 aperture. I recommend it all.

  • Olya

Hello everyone! wow! this is a lens that I had a week ago, now sold in good hands to the canonist; here are photos with him, as an example (not advertising :) I don’t take any money for shooting :)))) https://fotki.yandex.ru/next/users/ya-ugle/album/481651/view/1149868?page=4
and so, the focus, which is a car, for example, in motocross is slow, that is, not directly sleeping, but for such dynamics, especially on jumps, does not pull, at first, when I just bought it, January 2015, I thought that for G: ))) but there was nothing to do, it’s okay, then I didn’t have the habit of reading reviews, so I screwed it up, got used to it, although I’m an amateur, but even an amateur, he can do it, I can only compare autofocus with canon 18-135, canon faster and faster; it was still terribly zooming in the other direction, at first, then I got used to it, the lens went through fire-water and copper pipes, it still works like new :) I really liked the side in it, as they say here :) here is an example of a boke in this photo, there are houses and trees, I don’t know, I really like how oil paints on canvas, but this is a subjective moment: https://fotki.yandex.ru/next/users/ya-ugle/album/476879/view/1139549?page=3

greetings! But the review of the Tamron 70-200 2.8 di vc usd lens is not here, right? is it planned? thanks.

  • Nicholas

Good tests, correctly everything is arranged on the shelves, but the entire sharpness of the author’s lenses comes down to aperture clamps, and this number only goes with ancient devices with a matrix. Up to 16 pixels. And in modern 24 and more matrices, I don’t care how much you lift the diaphragm, I checked it myself and now it’s constantly on my 2 tampons 28-75 and 70-300. 6.3 or 7.1 maximum. Raise more do not raise any difference, as it came out to shoot with a fix of 35, did not look. On aperture value. It was 4.5 that I shot landscapes, trees, bushes, I just didn’t notice the sharpness difference, I just accidentally found it looking at the file properties .. A big request to the test author to test any lens on a camera with a 24 pixel matrix so that it’s poor for us to clearly explain what. How do we do wrong.

  • Levon

Today I tested this lens in a store on Canon 50D, and the a / f worked like and quickly, but during the descent, the picture was not in two cases out of three by 300 mm. And I shot it manually. This is both on the street and in the store. The seller then set the AV mode, which helped. I’ll try to attach three shots here: at a long focus of 300 mm, in a store, and for comparison, a shot of a pigeon on a Canon 17-85 lens. I would be grateful if you comment on pictures where there are more soaps.

    • Michael

In my opinion they are the same ... Soapy both and it's not about the glass, but about the exposure - it's too long. Also, Tamron sometimes smears pictures due to the work of the stabilizer. I've come across this more than once. Up to 150 mm this lens is very good with an open one, much better than what you did in the store

  • Nepalese

In the list of the entire line of these Tamrons, 472D was undeservedly omitted)))

  • Voldemars

Thanks for the professional review! Riobrel, as it went on sale, for Nikon D7200. Before buying a couple of months I rented a Nikon 70-300 / 4,5-5,6 VR, then I made inquiries. Nikon is dark, at 70mm it is already f / 4,5, and for Tamron this figure appears at focal ~ 135mm. (there is also f / 4,2 in the middle). The author has already spoken about clear stabilization and the difference in price. I advise. Fitted to me - Nikon 35mm f / 1,8G.

  • Andrei

Hello dear. I’ll probably ask a trivial question.
I shoot portraits at 50 1,8 (photo session birthdays, weddings, etc.). I say right away that the level of the district and the income are appropriate, you will not earn much, therefore I choose the appropriate optics. I want to exchange fifty dollars for cheto, which will give a softer bokeh. There are also 35 1,8 and 18-70 whales for the "feast".
I know about 80-200 myself, but I can't afford it financially. Apparently, you need to take at least µ3 (µ2 is also normal, but twists the background - for an amateur. The background needs exactly cream.). Analogs sigma and tamron 2.8 70-200 are also undersized for my budget in old ones, I see no point, not sharp at 2.8.
Generally stated the essence, and now the question:
This tamron is 70-300 or Nikon 1,8d / (well, or the native Nikkor 70 300 BP)
I understand perfectly everything about the distance to the subject, its size and range to the background.
The question is precisely to those who held these 2 copies in their hands. Portraits on tamron will be worthy? I understand that fixes are fixes, but I want to try telephoto in portraits, they have very interesting angles. So I’m thinking of taking a telephoto for portraits, it seems to draw and wash beautifully, or make a set of 18-70 + 85 fix sets. Can you advise something else.

    • Arkady Shapoval

At 70-300 will often be more interesting than at 50 / 1,8. For the portrait you can find 70-210 / 4.

    • Oleg

Watch 85 at once, so that later it would not be excruciatingly painfully for the wasted money. The native 85mm 1.8G is just creamy and not much more expensive than the above TV set. A bunch of 18-70 + 35 + 85 will cover 99% of your needs for lenses.

      • Andrei

Thank you for the advice, citizens photographers!
I thought about 70-210, and for a very long time I watched the reviews on him and his brother with a variable aperture, but for some reason it scares me away, not even because the old one, maybe I need to hold it in my hands to understand.
Personally, I like the tomron bokeshka more than 70-210.
85g sells one and a half times more expensive than the d-version and is not much cheaper from mk3. If we consider the purchase of the g-version, in my case, the choice would be in favor of the third model of the legendary telephoto. Although there is also a Tamron 100 in that price range, not bad for a portrait as for me.

  • Andrei

Today I purchased this lens for myself, based in part on your reviews. thanks.
I wanted to know what year this lens model? 2015?

    • Michael

Like 2010, if I'm not mistaken

  • Ruslan

Hello dear photography lovers! Today my new Tamron sp 70-300 di vc usm for Nikon arrived. First impressions are very positive: excellent assembly, tactile sensations are also good, very pleasant to use, further, super stabilizer performance (at 300 mm, a relatively sharp shot is really obtained on open 5.6, there is no blur from hand shake, the picture just freezes and crop as you need it, but this must be done promptly, because the picture seems to fly off at a certain moment and you need to focus again), the focus, first, does not smear. I just took test photos from my office window (with Nikon d90), the weather was disgusting - a wall of gray clouds…. I am sure that in the presence of the sun, the lens will open in all its glory)) I registered immediately on the Tamron website, got under the program - 10 years warranty)) Let's see how it will behave further, but today I am very happy with the purchase.

  • Ruslan

Continuation. I took my family to the sea. I took a lot of photos with this lens. At home, my wife and I looked at a photo on a computer and just abaldeli from the quality - the pictures are almost all sharp, juicy, colorful! The stabilizer is really super! Very satisfied, I recommend!

  • anonym

Arkady, please advise: what is the best choice for shooting birds on a limited budget - Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD or a used Canon EF 100-300mm f5.6 L? More needs 250-300mm sharpness, don't worry that Canon is outdated, bulky and without a stabilizer. Shooting is assumed in good weather.

    • Michael

Judging by the tests of Canon is better. I’ll add on my own that Tamron 300 noticeably lathers (compared with the range of 70-200), which makes it necessary to clamp the diaphragm.

  • Lyalya

Tamron after 200mm, what do you pinch what is not - even on F8 soapy shit. An absolutely mediocre lens.

  • Artem

Good day! All the same, I would like to clarify, if you do not take into account the cost, what will be better on the D5100? Is this Tamron or Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM? The shooting is mostly amateurish for myself, sometimes inexpensive orders (in the arsenal there is also Sigma 17-50 2,8 and Yaga 50 1,8 + puff Yaga, a tripod and a lot of little things). Thanks!

    • Arkady Shapoval

In general, the native is better. I would be grateful if you leave your feedback about sigma and yaga, thanks.

Thanks! In principle, to the native and the soul somehow lay more. According to Sigma 17-50 F2,8, I have already laid out the first impressions, a little more typed facts, I will lay out my own impressions. But so far only positive))) According to Yaga, for now, it’s not enough for me to understand, because just acquired.

Good evening. Interested in this model. The question is this first revision or, judging by the name, this is the second revision, then how can it be distinguished from the old generation?

    • Michael

      The presence of a stabilizer

      • Roman

A005 Model NII is how to understand?

    • Arkady Shapoval

NII is a mark for Nikon cameras that means an F-mount lens with a built-in motor and no aperture ring. Later, Tamron abandoned NII and just marks it with N (maybe not exactly), so as not to confuse people like that.

Help me choose between Tamron from the review
    and Nikkor AF-S 70-300 / 4,5-5,6 G VR IF-ED !!!

  • Dmitriy

Good day. Tell me if this lens can handle shooting children's gymnastics, the nikon d5200 camera. Or to us only to 70-200 2.8 to visit)

    • Michael

Alas, it is unlikely to pull. Only if the requirements for the picture are low.

    • Peter Sh.

If you want to shoot dynamics at shutter speeds of about 1/500, then the D5200 will not pull with any lens.

    • Peter Sh.

Sorry, I’ll add, the D5200 will not pull without a flash.

  • Michael

Good day. Tell me about the account
    Tamron 70-210mm F / 4 Di VC USD (Model A034)
if there is no review, then in a nutshell it can be bad and good.
    Regards, M.

  • Sergei

Hello. please tell me on the D7000 fit?

    • Michael

      Yes

      • Sergei

Sorry Michael, and will it work?

        • Michael

Of course it will, otherwise it wouldn’t fit) The lens is fully functional, don’t worry

          • Michael

            * functioning

  • Sergei

I myself recently tried to buy such a lens on my D7000, Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm F4.5-6.3G ED VR and it doesn’t work for me. the manual says an incompatible model

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Well, it's AF-P

  • Anastasia

    Thanks for the review!
Please help me decide ... Nikon 7200 camera. I have long wanted to buy Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR, but thought for so long that it has grown in price. Then I noticed the Nikon AF-P DX 70-300mm F4.5-6.3G ED VR. And now I read your review of Tamron. I want to shoot birds. That is, speed is important. And sharpness. The option is either to buy a used 70-300 (4.5-5.6). They write about him in the reviews that he is quite fast. Or buy HH. He is also praised for his speed (but, of course, he is dark). Or this Tamron. In Tamron, it bothers me that some scold the autofocus speed at the long end and the sharpness. I can't decide in any way.

  • Olesya

Tell me, is this lens suitable for Nikon D3100?
