What kind of animal?

The Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 VC USD A005NII is a classic 70-300mm telephoto lens for full frame cameras. These lenses are great for shooting outdoors, especially when you need to shoot something far away.

Similar, 'dark' telephoto lenses are very common and popular (in particular, due to the relatively low price), and almost every self-respecting manufacturer has its own model range of such lenses.

Tamron has been releasing autofocus telephoto lenses for a long time, the following is the most complete list of 70 (75) -300 / 4-5.6 models:

Some older Minolta / Sony camera lenses might have the prefix 'M' next to the model name, for example '672DM'. For Nikon / Canon / Pentax cameras, models have always been labeled with the single letter 'D', for example, '472D'.

Note that there are copies of Tamron lenses called 'Promaster', for example, Promaster EDO AF LD 70-300 EDO 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2)which is a copy Tamron LD DI AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 Tele-Macro (1: 2) Model A17.

This review presents the most recent model in this line, with the full name on the bezel: 'Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 VC Ultrasonic Silent Drive', and on the box you can find a clarification - the inscription 'Model: A005NII' ...

Note that the Tamron A005 lens is available for three systems:

  • Canon - Model A005E (an overview of this model can be viewed here)
  • Sony - Model A005S (The version is called Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 USD A005 and does not have an integrated image stabilizer)
  • Nikon - Model A005NII (such as in this review)

Strange, but the A005 is not available for Pentax cameras.

Letter 'N'in the model name refers to the lens version for Nikon cameras. Designation 'NII'for the Nikon F mount version, it is analogous to the native' AF-S 'and' G 'type lenses. The 'NII' is not the second version of the lens, but simply a peculiar lens designation that means there is a built-in focus motor and no aperture ring.

In Tamron A005 many innovations:

  • this is the first Tamron lens with a USD type motor
  • this is the first Tamron XLD lens
  • this is the first lens in the 70 (75) -300 line, which belongs to the SP series
  • this is one of the first Tamron lenses supporting the Tamron VC integrated stabilization system

Is it really a copy?

I found the fact that the optical circuits of the Tamron A005 and Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM very similar. Both lenses have 17 optical elements in 12 groups.

In addition, the lenses have the same arrangement of low dispersion elements, the minimum focusing distance, the maximum magnification factor, the presence of internal focusing and the same movement of the frame of the body during a change in focal length. I could not find the exact information about the similarity of the optical schemes, you can leave your guesses in the comments.

Let me remind you that optical circuits Nikon ED AF Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6D and Tamron AF 70-300mm 1: 4-5.6 LD DI Macro (model 362D, possibly other models) are completely identical.

Assembly

Tamron a005 well assembled, I did not notice any obvious backlashes or shortcomings. The lens body is made of high quality plastic. Lens is made in China.

The lens uses a plastic bayonet hood, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. On the copy from my review, the hood is very poorly fixed when installed in the opposite direction. In this position, at 70 mm, access to the zoom ring is lost. While changing the focal length, the lens hood moves with the trunk of the lens.

The focus and zoom rings are rubberized; the Tamron A005 has a metal mount. The lens does not suffer from spontaneous lengthening of the frame. The only thing I didn’t like when using the lens was an unpleasant, rough sound during the rotation of the focus ring, maybe this is a feature of the specimen that I visited.

When changing the focal length, the rear lens moves in the middle of the lens body like a pump - it draws in and pushes out air. This behavior of the rear lens is called the 'vacuum cleaner effect', which can increase the amount of dust accumulating in the camera.

Stabilizer

Tamron A005 has Tamron built-in image stabilizer VC (Vvibration Compensation). Stated that the stabilizer can compensate 4 stops by shutter speed... (by the standards of Tamron). In numerical terms, this means that you can shoot at shutter speeds 16 times slower than required by a lens without a stabilizer. For example, when shooting without the stabilizer of stationary objects, at a focal length of 300 mm, you can shoot at shutter speeds of 1/320 s or faster. With the gimbal on, you can theoretically shoot by 1/20 s. True, 4 feet is an exaggeration. The stabilizer works well, but it is far from 4 stops.

The gimbal can detect camera movement while shooting panoramas, but does not 'understand' when the camera is mounted on a tripod, so the gimbal should be turned off when shooting with a tripod. To switch the operating modes of the stabilizer, there is an 'On / Off' switch on the case.

When working with the lens at 300 mm focal length JVI the difference is clearly visible when the stabilizer is on and off. When sighting with the stabilizer on, the picture freezes and allows you to comfortably compose the frame. I got the impression that the Tamron A005 gimbal performs better during sighting than the Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM.

When turned on and off, the gimbal emits a characteristic clicking sound (similar to that of the Tamron 17-50 / 2.8 VC).

A stabilizer with similar efficiency is used in the model. A009.

Focusing

The Tamron A005 is the first Tamron lens to use USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) - ultrasonic quiet focusing motor. This innovation was timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Tamron.

Model A005 will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera. When using the lens on the camera Nikon D700 with focus module Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FX There were no problems with speed and focus accuracy. The lens focused accurately and rarely re-focused.

The body has an 'AF / MF' (auto focus / manual focus) switch to select the focus mode. The lens is declared to support Ftmf (Full Time Mannual Focus) - continuous manual focus control, which allows manual focusing in 'AF' mode without switching to 'MF' mode. But, as it turned out, this is not a complete analogue Nikon M / A (or other similar) FTMF mode only allows you to adjust the focus after the camera is focused. In focus mode AF-C this mode is useless.

Focusing speed is mixed and depends on the set focal length:

  • the lens focuses quickly at 70 mm of focal length, and the travel time from infinity to MDF and vice versa is similar to Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM.
  • at 300 mm of focal length, the lens focuses noticeably slower, and the focusing speed can be called average.

During focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary, as the lens uses internal focus 'IF'('Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'). During zooming, the front lens leans forward but does not rotate. Thus, it is possible to use any filters without problems, for example polarizing or gradient.

The minimum focusing distance is 1.5 meters. Unfortunately, the Tamron A005 has the poorest 1: 4 magnification ratio of its predecessors. All previous versions had the 'Macro' prefix in their name, hinting at the possibility of macro photography, and their zoom ratio was better, ranging from 1: 3.9 to 1: 2.

The focus ring rotates to 135 degrees, when extreme positions are reached, it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focus.

Tamron A005 has window with distance scale in meters and feet. There is no IPIG scale, as are tags for working in the infrared spectrum.

Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD

Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD

Diaphragm

The lens uses aperture with 9 rounded petals. On covered diaphragms you can get 18 ray stars from point light sources.

There are marks with a focal length on the zoom ring, the following is a list with the minimum numbers F available for these marks:

  • 70 mm - F / 4
  • 100 mm - F / 4.2
  • 135 mm - F / 4.5
  • 200 mm - F / 5.3
  • 300 mm - F / 5.6

Like most modern lenses, the Tamron A005 does not have an aperture control ring, all control is done using the camera controls.

Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD

Image quality

The Tamron A005 is the first Tamron lens to use XLD (eXbetween Low Dispersion). Declared that optical performance XLD close to fluorite, but personally I think that there is not much difference between XLD и LD. Also, Tamron A005 belongs to the line of SP (Super Performance) lenses with high performance typical of Tamron professional lenses. But, despite the low price and modest apertureThe Tamron A005 is not a true 'professional lens'.

On fully open apertures, Tamron A005 shows good sharpness in the center of the frame in the range of 70-200 mm and acceptable sharpness in the range of 200-300 mm. If you cover the aperture to F / 8, then in the range of 200-300 mm the center of the frame becomes quite sharp. The edges of the image on a full-format camera in the range of 70-200 mm are good at F / 8, and in the range of 200-300 mm at F / 11.

Lens showed good contrast and good resistance to side and back light.

Unfortunately, vignetting on completely open diaphragms was not without tangible. But, it is worth covering the diaphragm, as the vignette is noticeably reduced.

The distortion level is common for a similar lens. There is a small barrel-shaped distortion at 70 mm of focal length, which is replaced by a pillow-shaped distortion to 300 mm.

Chromatic aberrations well compensated, especially at 70 mm focal length.

In general, the lens showed good, and sometimes even good image quality.

My experience

I am pleasantly surprised by the performance of the Tamron A005. I used to use it for a long time Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM, and I can say for sure that optically Tamron A005 is at least no worse than native Nikkor. As indicated at the beginning of the review, these lenses have very similar optical schemes, and therefore I can assume that the Tamron A005 is a kind of processing of a successful native Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM.

Main differences between Tamron A005 and Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM

  • Nikon 70-300VR has a full focus mode Nikon M / A. The FTMF mode on the Tamron A005 is not so convenient.
  • Nikon 70-300VR has a rubber seal near the bayonet for protection against dust and moisture.
  • Nikon 70-300VR has a larger front lens diameter (67 mm vs 62 mm).
  • Nikon 70-300VR It has two modes of operation of the stabilizer to save battery power and more convenient operation in different situations.
  • Included with Nikon 70-300VR There is a velor cover.
  • Tamron A005 is 4 years newer than Nikon 70-300VR.
  • Tamron A005 is slightly lighter at the short end (F / 4 VS F / 4.5).
  • Tamron A005 is significantly cheaper and has a longer warranty.

Otherwise, the lenses are very similar. I would safely buy Tamron A005 instead Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM. Hopefully the Tamron A005 has a small variation in build quality and image-to-instance image.

EGF lens for Nikon DX cameras is 105-450mm. Tamron A005 analogue for Nikon DX cameras can be considered Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G ED VR IF SWM и Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1: 4-5.6G ED VR II. This Tamron A005 works wonderfully on cropped cameras and does not cause much inconvenience due to recalculation EGF. In the case of telephoto lenses crop factor cameras Nikon DX in most cases is only beneficial, as it allows you to increase EGF and reach even further :).

The Tamron SP AF 70-300 mm f / 4-5.6 Di VC USD is a good lens with a good price / performance ratio. I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality and image quality that the lens creates. In my experience, the Tamron A005. optically no worse than a similar native lens - Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM. I recommend the Tamron A005 as an inexpensive telephoto lens with stabilizer.

Comments: 136, on the topic: Review of Tamron DI SP 70-300mm F / 4-5.6 VC USD A005NII

  • Lynx

Who was the first to shout “spenzili” ???

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Lynx!

      • Taras

Arkady. So all the same, which one to choose from two Nikon or Tamron? The price is not important, we take the rest pluses. For example, the rubber ring on the bayonet pleases my native roots. Although I’m shooting macro lenses tamron and satisfied. If you take, technically, and the picture ?! Whom? And then I can not decide. thanks

        • BB

If Nikon is satisfied with the price - take him, after all, it's 'native'.
If price is not important at all - take Nikkor 80-200 / 2.8.

          • Taras

Nikkor 80-200 / 2.8. It is expensive and there is no stub, if you really go for an expensive purchase, it is better to fix 300 Nikkor or 200 macro. I shoot nature and would like to have at least 300, so 200 will not be enough. To be honest, for a month now I can not decide on a lens for nature. There is an inexpensive Sigma 150-500, but the reviews are so contradictory. They write that it is dark, but rather sharp, slow auto focus, but tenacious and 500mm all the same. There are Sigma 50-500mm, two options, but much more expensive) I already looked at 28-300 from Nikon, but he was charmed (heavy, smears and all that) Can you help me decide ?! I am at 70-300 lenses and I look because the price is not biting and in terms of focal norms, like norms, and in quality like LEO norms, it can 150-500 ??! It's a pity there is no such review here of comparing lenses for "birds" for a reasonable price

            • BB

28-300 - not worth it - heavy, slow, soapy at the edges.

My Nikkor 70-300Vr suits me very much - both in terms of image quality and AF speed, if I chose now, I would not take Tamron (there are good copies, but the range in quality is still large). I had nothing to do with Sigma, I won't tell you.

  • Yarkiya

Strange, but the A005 is not available for Pentax cameras.

Apparently because Pentax still had no full frame.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Tamron A17 for Pentax was, like a bunch of other lenses. It is not a matter of having full-format cameras.

  • Nikita

Thanks for the review, I’ve been waiting for it since half a year, probably!
I use this model - very happy! Especially the stabilizer :)

  • Sergey

Better to pay a little more, but take Nikon 70-300 / 4,5-5,6.
    My opinion on this lens:
The zoom ring squeaks unpleasantly, as if sand had been poured into the lens. It focuses successfully mainly on the second attempt - on the first attempt, it comes out completely full of soap. Plus, the autofocus itself is kind of prowling.

    • Pastor

Perhaps you came across an unsuccessful instance. My tamron with autofocus had no problems day or night. Perhaps filmed in a severe lack of light? At my copy, the zoom also somehow went unpleasantly, not as vilely as on the Tamron 17-50 2.8, but not as smoothly as even on the Whale 18-55 BP2.

    • Oleg

My Tamron had everything the same as Sergey, and even limped wildly on all aperture and focal values. Apparently there is a SIGNIFICANT scatter as specific instances.

  • Yarkiya

"The Tamron A005 is significantly cheaper and has a longer warranty."

Strange, but we have a price for Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM and this tamron is exactly the same. 5 $ difference does not count.

    Nikon 489, Tamron 484.

    • Arkady Shapoval

For example, our Tamron costs 7-8k. UAH, and Nikon - 11-12k. UAH, the difference is 150-200 USD.

  • Valerii

The pictures are very bright, rich colors. Is it in the lens or in the camera settings?

    • anonym

Saturated in pikcher kontrol. I think so.

  • Pastor

An excellent lens, this Tamron. I compared with Nikon's and in general, apart from a slightly different color rendition, did not notice much difference. The autofocus is just as fast, the stub is also good (though it seemed to me that the Nikon has a bit better, but the difference is barely noticeable). I liked everything about the tamron, both the sharpness and the price. One thing pushed me away from long-term ownership - the lack of dust and moisture protection, which Nikon's analogue has. If I shot 70-300 BP with Nikon for several hours in heavy rain without any problems, then I'm not sure that the Tamron would have withstood this. In fact, for me, this is the only important difference between these wonderful lenses.

  • anonym

Arkady, can you tell me which park you shot, or is it a botanical garden?

    • Noa

      Feofania, Kiev

  • anonym

Where have you been Arkady before with this review? !!! My Nikon ED AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR IF SWM lies and is not happy. Money down the drain. Maybe a copy of this, but very soapy takes off. I used it for the first year, now it’s almost idle, but I’m still thinking how to replace it (a lens with a variable focus is still needed). I will change without looking. :)

    • BB

Nikonovsky 70-300VR is very sharp. Perhaps you have front / back focus, or an unsuccessful instance (did you fully check it when buying?).
I have been using it for three years now and am very pleased.
Maybe it’s worth just attributing the adjustment?

      • anonym

It's a shame to give good money for a BRAND, and then drag around services. Yes, and took without a guarantee in one photo shop. I'll try to demolish it, there is no way out ...

    • Oleg

Hi, there! Nikonovsky 70-300 is idle ??? And how much do you ask ?? I will buy!!!

  • Eugene

As a “hazyain” of this exemplar, I can say that the lens still only pleases me (well, the truth is nothing to compare with), the rustle during the rotation of the focusing ring is most likely a consequence of shooting with very strong dust (rally competition on gravel in dry weather), several times the lens got wet (though not in a rainstorm). but still alive (in the drizzling rain from time to time I just wipe it off). Fixing the hood in an inverted state, I agree, somehow loosened up very quickly (it does not bother me, I immediately cling to the working position and that's it).
Thanks to Arkady for the excellent review, I was convinced that I did not fail with the lens (I have been operating for more than two years).

  • Michael

Who has this lens, tell me: when the stabilizer is turned on (half-release of the shutter button) in the viewfinder, the image first jerks up and down in the viewfinder, and only then “freezes”. Is this normal for this model? The first time I come across such work of a stub. This was not on the Canon TV ... This fact does not interfere, but confuses.
By the way, the focus ring does not creak in my specimen, it walks very smoothly. Apparently, this is still the effect of dust.

    • Eugene

      It seems to me.

      • Michael

Thanks for the answer. So this is a feature of the stub on this model

    • anonym

And on my sigma 150 it pushes the image on autofocus and rattles, but it works ...

  • Yarkiya

I apologize for the offtopic, but I can not help but share. I did not know in which topic it is best to write, and therefore I write in the last created one. We are talking about terminology, Arkady in one of the video reviews, wittily called the shooting mode M masculine, and rightly so! :))) Because if he was female, he would look like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09h9umLdZlg
Honestly, this is not an advertising video channel, just stumbled and received a charge of vivacity for a while.
    Maybe you will cheer up.

    • anonym

and you still look at her portfolio under the video. All questions will be removed there. She only learned 1 command in Photoshop - saturation

    • anonym

Yes, not so bad with her! Everything is quite clear ... I know from myself that it is difficult to explain something to a complete non-specialist without using special terms. I think that Canon is generally confused! All sorts of Tv / Av - just like on TV ... Maybe just for the female "logic" they developed ...

PS. A person with an 85 / 1.2 lens, provided that he understands “why”, can name any modes, including M, as it suits him! Let it be “mechanical”, like on a car box. Counterweight to the "machine".

    • anonym

      You are angry ...)

    • Sergei

And in my opinion, the video was shot by the genius of advertising, all the words and reservations are not accidental.

  • anonym

The blonde disguised herself as a brunette and therefore was entrusted with a rich technique. Is it like a “photo school”? ... Seven minutes of video niasilil

  • anonym

And yes, it would be funny if you advertised such a channel.

  • anonym

The girl, of course, confuses the concepts of maximum and minimum, but this video can be shown to people who hold the camera in their hands for the first time, especially girls, it will be much clearer for them what to twist, and they will understand much more than if they would show a 2-hour video of the eminent photographer's master class. I would say this is a short guide for "blondes" "How to comprehend a DSLR in 10 minutes"

That's right, if this blonde constantly confuses 'maximum' and 'minimum', then how can a beginner not get confused here? I was especially pleased with '... taking pictures of fast-moving OBJECTS, for example CHILDREN ...'

There is an excellent section on this site - articles about photos - https://radojuva.com.ua/o-fotografii/
where you can read calmly and slowly about shutter speed and aperture.

And such videos are strictly prohibited for beginners to watch.

Well, I liked the M-mechanical mode the most. :)))

        • BB

          Well, it's just pearl))

So I imagine: the device turns off all possible electronics, and the image is obtained on the matrix mechanically. To get positive, you need to make an impression from the matrix)))

Come on. She explained how she could. Quite lucidly. A little bit, no doubt about it. But I'm sure many of the beginners will be happy. At least what is the use. And what is the use of your arrogant grumbling? ... Get down to earth.

            • BB

Beginners such a video can generally drive into a stupor.
When they ask me about shutter speed-aperture, I either give the above link where the principles of their work are described in detail, clearly and CORRECTLY (if the question is asked remotely).
Or I take out the Zenith from the shelf, and show the shutter and aperture, on a live, visual example :-)

“As I could” - it will pass for an excuse at school, but not when a person is leading his channel.

It is not the Gods who burn the pots. Some do not provide the material to beginners with sufficient quality, others pounce, like Tuzik on a heating pad, at these very beginners when they ask unnecessary questions….

I have such a lens. It works fine. Squeaks and so on. no. The only thing I pay attention to is the noisy stabilizer. When he works, I hear a buzzing sound during his work. On Nikkor 18-105, when there is no sound stabilization at all!

    + 100500 !!!

Our Nikkor costs 10000 rubles more (27 to 17) than a tamron. It turns out that a lens in Russia is cheaper than abroad. The stub is noisy, but he is at least at nikkon, at least at sigma all who are 300 mm. reaches stubs noisy. But if you take it for video, it’s easier to buy an ordinary tamronchik for 6000 rubles. Cheaper, moreover, neither stub nor autofocus when shooting movies is needed.

  • Dezdecado

With this photo size, you won’t notice the noise, cunning Mr. Good.

  • Serg

I also have this, and also the difference in price with Nikon is 10 thousand. Therefore, I took it. So far, satisfied.

Gentlemen, I alone noticed such a wonderful and convenient thing in the article as "Navigation"

    • Lynx

      You're alone.

In fact, a fool with a link from Bright in the hands of pyadvak with 85 1.2. Honestly, it was very sad to look at the terrific technique, which even in the hands is unlikely to be able to hold sometime in real life, in the hands of this nerd.

  • anonym

Yes, she’s not a nerd, but an ordinary blonde, apparently someone pinned a fotik on the pier and taught novices on the pipe, with such a technique you will become a guru.

    • Yarkiya

Nifiga, she takes pictures of herself, and it seems like for a long time. So the "fully mechanical" shooting mode is more of a diagnosis than a director's idea.

Hello everybody! Had one on 600D and 7D. From impressions: a very, very good stub, “holds” the picture tightly, the constructive is so-so, has extraneous mechanical noises during operation, with sharpness as luck would have it (very unstable), a 5-year warranty (after registering on the official site) helps a lot. After 1-1,5 years of shooting, it began to squeak noticeably when autofocusing on some focal ones, again not stable, but annoying great. Tellingly, when focusing manually, the creak was not noticed. I handed over to the St. Petersburg service center twice, which did not help. As a result, he received an act for exchange or refund, chose the latter. I would not take it again. Very budgetary "glass", and it does not correspond to the marking "SP" (professional series), neither in optical characteristics, nor in dust and moisture protection, nor in the strength of the structure as a whole. The hood is flimsy, "dangling" in the working position. What pleases, he did not live to see my current EOS 5D Mark III, it would only be upset. Happy shots to everyone! )))

    • Igor_K

      A very useful addition!

    • Igor_K

A very useful addition! It can be seen in Tamron, as in Sigma - the optics were tightened, but not everything is so smooth with the mechanics!

  • Armen

And who said that this lens does not give the possibility of a 4-foot deviation?

I think the above example is not much less than 4 stops.
This pipe is 100% worth the money
Yes it buzzes, it rolls out, but at the same time it produces a very good drawing.
