In short

MC PANCOLAR 1,8 / 50 CARL ZEISS JENA DDR is a very nice classic fifty dollars from East Germany. Nowadays it can act as a good creative lens. It has a higher aftermarket price and a stronger reputation than many older 50 / 1.8 manual XNUMXs.

Please note that there were quite a few versions and sub-versions of this lens. Basically, there are two key ones: ordinary (without multi-coating), which is also called 'zebra', and such as shown in this review.

MC PANCOLAR 1,8 / 50 CARL ZEISS JENA DDR to the touch well assembled, has full metal case. The focus ring does not have rubberized inserts, metal with a characteristic anti-slip corrugation, rotates approximately 330 degrees (almost a full turn) The ring travel is smooth and pleasant. The original front cover without latches, just snug against the frame of the case, it can easily be removed with a random movement. During focusing, the front retractable body does not rotate. Focusing occurs by moving the entire lens block. The front lens is deeply recessed in the frame of the housing.

A nice little thing is a fairly small MDF, which is only 35 centimeters. Usually fifty dollars have an MDF of 40 to 60 cm.

At different times in the review, I had several of these lenses, some of which suffered a breakdown of the diaphragm mechanism. Some users claim that this is a common problem for this lens.

  • Alex

Arkady, tell me please, in some places it is written that the lens has a radiation background, since thorium is present in it. Could you comment on this fact? Do you know what about this?

    • SONY

I have never met a word about thorium in this lens. This happens more often with Pentax.
Thorium-in-glass lenses are only dangerous if you grind and eat that glass, or breathe dust. But I would not recommend doing this in the case of ordinary glass ...

  • Vladimir

is it possible to use this lens for video on canon 6d - the jump is still scary, thank you for the advice

  • Irina

Arkady, thank you so much for your reviews! I tried to put my father's Helios-100 on my Canon 44D, I realized that it was easy to get my hands on, and decided that I needed to buy some kind of manual lens. I re-read a bunch of your articles about different glasses, and eventually settled on Pankolar. The black version, the jump is disabled (the previous owner shot the video), MS. I will study it now.
Photo Yarsk, it seems to me that a “saw” on a slightly covered aperture is an inevitable evil with such a shape and such a number of petals ((They disappear by about 4 already.

  • Vladimir

At infinity, the mirror touches the canon 6d .. Is there any way to fix this?

    • Alexander

What kind of adapter are you using? I have not seen anything like it. Buy a good adapter and will not catch anything!

  • XXL

I didn’t see any sharpness at all - what are the people admiring?

    • Max

so I compared with industrial 61. it's about five meters, iso 400

  • Igor

    Briefly cut: chic glass.

  • Sergey

I can’t understand one thing ... I came across this lens. Inscription around the front lens PANCOLAR 1.8 / 50 CARL ZEISS JENA. On the aperture ring MADE in DDR But at the same time it is zebra-striped and without MC letters. Number 8901174. According to your reviews, we get a hybrid between MC PANCOLAR 1.8 / 50 CARL ZEISS JENA DDR and Pancolar 1.8 / 50 ausJena Apparently some kind of transitional version?

    • Igor

The inscriptions changed in different ways. You have an old version, on which most often such as your inscriptions.

      • Sergey

Thanks. And the lens is very pleasant at work.

  • Sergey.

I just got this Pancolar 1.8 / 50 Carl Zeiss Jena DDR lens, zebra-striped along with the PRAKTIKA LTL carcass. Apparently, the person did not use it or used it very little (judging by the state of the entire apparatus and the lacquered wardrobe trunk). We checked it with a radiometer - nothing fonites. I unscrewed it and inserted it onto the adapter with "camomile" for Canon. The focus is clearly defined by the electronics. Of course, it differs from Helios for the better. Especially if the cropped matrix, then of course closer to the original fifty dollars. The pictures are high quality and sharp. Quite worthy for a collection.

  • Alexander

    Hello!
I had a choice between this lens and Helios 77-4.
    which one is better?
but I really like the twisted bokeh ...

    • Igor

      A similar problem.

  • Artyom

I sell the lens Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar DDR 50mm lens for 1000 UAH
write in the PM for details http://vk.com/id135862974

  • Igor

Saw the version of the "zebra" with 8 aperture blades.

  • anonym

I reread the article again - I just went and took pictures with this lens today. I specifically catch hares against the light at sunset, this is the “glint of the pancolar” that Arkady speaks of. Such an awesome circle, inscribed in a frame flooded with evening light! I would throw a couple of examples if you can tell me how to do it without hassle. He would have to add a few blades to the diaphragm, well, it's a pity to get nuts from such a glass

  • anonym

It turned out, thanks for the convenience of the site, Arkady! All to you!

  • anonym

Oh, yes - the vignette on the full frame is present, and quite a sickly one. But as for a retro photo, then very much even for yourself. Many add on purpose.

There is such a lens in the MC version, a wonderful thing! The only negative that I find is insufficiently effective enlightenment. In addition, in my version, it has a blue color and gives unpleasant blue glare in the backlight. Tell me, does it make sense to buy in exchange for its CZ Planar 50 1.4? Is his enlightenment and bokeh character much better?

  • Basil

Dear Good day to you. I got pancolar 1,8 / 50 jena ddr. With one problem, everything withered! The diaphragm spring has flown. In the vastness of the network I found a manual for disassembling this lens. I took the risk, unscrewed 3 screws, removed the cap, hooked the spring into place and the diaphragm worked, but at the moment of opening 2 metal balls of different sizes fell out. Balls left alone in a box. Question to you where these balls come from (bearings are possible). I don’t know how, but the lenses in the dust are a little internal. This is the second question, I think it’s worth it to take it apart. Carrying a repair is not an option, it is very simple and at a price it will be like the cost of a used second-hand. Help good people.

    • Michael

Perhaps from a diaphragm drive. It is necessary that the aperture with clicks is exposed.

  • Boris

As for my taste - the bokeh is unpleasant, unnatural. It can be somehow assessed only in terms of price. But those who saw bokeh on Canon 135 f / 2.0 or Sigma 50 f / 1.4 “Art”, or Sony 135 f / 2.8 STF will not look at this rarity without tears. Of course there are lovers of such bokeh, love is evil.

  • Vladimir

Arkady, as a novice amateur photographer, I ask a Sovat. I am faced with the choice of fifty dollars for the D80 camera. There are two lenses at almost the same price:
MC Pancolar 1.8 / 50 Carl Zeiss Jena DDR
    MS Helios 81H 2/53
What do you advise, Carl Zeiss but with troubles with adapters (I think to take with a lens) or Helios without unnecessary problems and costs?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      81n without extra troubles

      • Vladimir

Thanks for the prompt and concise answer.

      • Christopher

Arkady, I've noticed a lens on which instead of MC it is written completely Multi Coating also in red. Please comment. Thanks!

    • Yuri

In the topic about MS Helios 81H 2/53, it was discussed what is better than MS Helios 81H 2/50, But in terms of blurring and color rendition it looks more like Nikonovsky 1.8 / 50mm G, if you take Nikon then. and for creativity, then get confused with the Carl Zeiss and bokeh is different and the color rendition is different)

      • York

The Zeiss (not the GDR, but the Oberkochen) have a dry picture. Not that completely faceless, but very academic, without flaws. Bokeh as such - no, just blur.
It is not bad when you need a standard for work.
But when you need a drawing and coloring, you need all kinds of rubbish - helios, pentacons, all kinds of seals and canons of dead accordion ...

  • Max

here interesting glare turned out with a little backlight. No effects added

  • Max

But is there any similar high-quality lens, at the same reasonable price, but with 10 petals, suppose? that there would be no nuts in the bokeh. Helios do not want, tired of swirling bokeh

  • Sergei

According to the comment of Yaroslav (2012), he made almost infinity on Nikon. Not everything is as fast as Yaroslav writes, because on Nikon d750 a mirror hooked. I had to file a 1,5 mm back of the lens block (a skirt with a ring nut). Initially, the ring was set to 3 mm, but it was 0,5, because Do not screw the lens block back. In general, I am satisfied with the result, thanks to Yaroslav and Arkady)).

  • Sergei

Arkady, an excellent overview, as well as the lens itself.) Of the entire fleet of my lenses (9 pcs.), It is MC PANCOLAR 1.8 / 50 CZJ that I use in about 40% of cases. The lens is inexpensive and, in a sense, universal, + good characteristics.

  • Elena

Hello! Tell me, is this a manual lens? I was tortured with the maniacal Helios and bought a Nikon AF 50 mm D, but with its focusing trouble, aaa, autofocus often misses. I thought to buy 50 mm G, but in the reviews they write that they very often miss their autofukos (((Nikon punched in China, it was not understood and it is not clear what to choose ...
So I'm considering Carl Zeiss ... But I don't want manual focusing ... (For portrait photography, on Nikon D90)

    • B. R. P.

Of course, manual. Everything Soviet and German (of that time) is manual.

  • ñ

    new thing!
I have a zebra pankolar and a diaphragm up to 5.6 only closes (((how can I cure an ailment without popapoli (opening and so on? !! + a plastic rattle (which is responsible for bearing movement and aperture control) is also pretty tired and sometimes the slightest touch on the aperture control ring shifts the aperture ((((well, here it’s still really easy to make a model and print on a 3D print, but with the aperture blades (

    • ILYAs

      NB: I mean “opening incomplete

    • Stas

It closes in both manual and automatic mode up to 5.6. If only in the manual, then most likely one of the parts that is responsible for pressing the diaphragm has been erased. If in both cases, then you need to dig.

    • Denis

it won’t work without a popabol - sort it out to the ground, clean it, collect it. it will be difficult with the aperture: https://youtu.be/yhKxTnQduGM
