Canon 20D Review

For the opportunity 20D body camera review many thanks to Mikhail Rybak, who sent me him from another area.

Canon 20D Review

Canon 20D Review

Canon 20D is one of the first advanced consumer digital SLR cropped cameras Canon. The Canon 20D is now the 'old lady', as it was released back in the fall of 2004 and cannot boast of anything special. Canon 20D looks very similar to its ancestor Canon 10D and to a newer version Canon 30D. True, unlike Canon 10DThe Twenty supports Canon EF and EF-S lenses.

Canon 20D uses 8.2 megapixel CMOS matrix that allows you to take pictures of 3504 X 2336 pixels. The exact same matrix is used by the more modern model - Canon 30D. Eight megapixels is enough for simple photo tasks, I advise you to look in the section Battle of Megapixels.

Canon 20D can use ISO 100 to 1600 up to ISO 3200 (ISO H). The Canon 20D doesn't boast of low noise at high ISOs these days, and ISO 1600 itself is not considered that high these days. In the camera settings, you can only set the values ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, ISO H, without intermediate values. In program modes, the camera uses automatic ISO selection, which is limited to an extremely narrow range - between ISO 100 and 400.

Canon 20D has very small 1.8 inch display. Viewing captured photos on it is very difficult. The display is more suitable for navigating the camera menu. The camera menu itself is simple, it is easy to understand. Unlike the older Canon 10D, a menu in Russian appeared in the Canon 20D.

Canon 20D has 9 focus pointsof which only one, central, is cruciform. A huge number of Canon cameras use the same focusing system. On the camera you can find the connectors: USB 2.0, video output, output for the remote control and PC Sync output for studio flashes. The good news is that the camera has a very short minimum shutter speed equal to 1 / 8000 seconds.

The Canon 20D has pleasant ergonomics, it is not difficult to operate the camera. I want to note optional monochrome display with yellow backlight. The display greatly simplifies the work. The camera lies well in the hand, the grip is rubberized.

All in all - the Canon 20D is a well-built camera with a 'Made in Japan' mark on the body. The fact that the camera is almost 10 years old, and it works flawlessly, already says a lot. The battery of the camera holds a charge well, it's hard for me to say how many hundreds of shots it can last, since I used the Canon 20D only with lenses without autofocus.

Example photo on a Canon 20D

Canon 20D can shoot at speed 5 frames per second. A serious drawback of the Canon 20D is the small frame buffer when shooting in RAW format, which is only 6 shots. With fast burst shooting, the camera starts to slow down after the first second. RAW files are 6-8 MB in size. There is no option to select RAW settings in the camera menu, so the Canon 20D always shoots at 12-bit color depth and with file compression. When shooting in JPEG, 9 pictures are buffered, but the series of pictures with my Transcend CompactFlash 8GB 133x memory card becomes almost endless. For those who shoot in JPEG, small frame buffer The Canon 20D is not a hindrance at all. Canon 20D uses large and fast memory cards CF.

Personal experience

I was very upset by the small frame buffer when shooting in burst in RAW format, which multiplies the beauty of 5fps burst shooting by zero. It's also too bad that the camera doesn't have the ability to use intermediate ISO values. The Canon 20D is now of interest to amateur photographers who do not need the 'modern bells and whistles' of the CZK, almost everyone can afford such a camera, it can be bought for only $ 150. If you know how to handle RAW files a little, then you can still squeeze good pictures from the old Canon 20D, because very important how to take pictures, but not by what means.

It so happened that I tested the Canon 20D immediately in combat conditions, taking it with me as an additional camera for wedding photography. The videographer who worked with me that day was very much surprised at such an 'antediluvian' beast, but he appreciated Porst 55mm F / 1.2which was installed on Canon 20D :).

Sample Photos

Canon EOS 20D Digital crop lens and lens shots YONGNUO YN85mm F1.8 (for Canon EF)... Photos - on-camera JPEG without any modifications. All photos were taken without using a lens hood, some photos were taken using a light filter HOYA 58mm PL-CIR.

Jpeg source photos download from this link (108 photos, 300 MB).

In comments Can I ask you a question on the topic and you will answer, and you can also express your opinion or describe your experience. Many little things for a photo can be found on AliExpress.

Conclusions:

The Canon 20D is an obsolete camera that can still do a great job. The camera has fast burst shooting, good ergonomics, but not a bunch of modern settings. Recommended for amateur photographers on a very tight budget.

how many articles have been published on joyful, and the photos in them are always fresh, of excellent quality and content - I take off my hat; Q)

Hands decide))) I realized how 5100 played for six months. Fantasy brain and mathematical miscalculation is everything!

The device is good and durable, for many of my friends I took 250 - 300 tons of pictures and is still alive, only one minus is NOISE

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

Arkady, please tell us how you are planning a wedding shooting day. And then young people usually want to quickly cover a bunch of stories, and in conditions of limited time they cannot be revealed.
And it would be very interesting to know which camera + lens combinations (primary and secondary) do you usually use?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is selected individually, but on a wedding day everything can go its own way in an instant. The best method is to shoot a wedding reportage on the wedding day (without a walk), and set aside a separate day for staging (walking) (post-wedding photography). In general, the wedding day very much depends on what people want - sometimes it's something interesting, sometimes not so much. My set of techniques is very simple - http://wedding-photographer.tv/gallerys/photoset-10/idkfa-all-camera.html

      • Denis

:)), no matter how I tried and did not offer, I still have not agreed to a post-wedding shoot. It turns out that you have to put on the dress, restore the hairstyle again, etc.
There was a wedding, where I had to work day and night, so to speak, but nevertheless I couldn’t shoot all my plans because of the large geographical spread of the shooting locations.
Recently, I have been observing the work of my colleagues - they focus on walking after painting, and they don’t shoot the evening at all.

        • Arkady Shapoval

I also focus on walking :)

          • Egor

Sorry to get into the conversation. At my wedding, I also focused on the photographer on the walk and allocated 4 hours for this between the registry office and the restaurant. I also took into account the transportation and the geographical position of the desired shooting locations in advance and planned so that everything would be without gaps, hesitations and not far from each other. I also realized that for excellent shots and original creative ideas, it is very important to establish perfect contact between the photographer and the couple, and a lot depends on the couple, they have to sweat a lot on the wedding day. The first to give up after a long shoot are brides in heels, especially when you consider that weddings are most often in the summer. But it's worth it, the photos are amazing, which is what is needed for memory for a lifetime.
It seems to me that it is wedding photos that are much more interesting to watch than videos. Since the wedding in the photo is like pictures from a fairy tale, and the wedding wants to be associated with a fairy tale. Photos convey the mood more, and the looking person himself draws the story around the frame and, as it were, moves into this fairy tale. And the video gives more documentary and there already does not blow a fairy tale, everything is as it really was, and computer inserts often aggravate it even more. But the taste and color ... This is IMHO :) Good luck to everyone!

As my sister said: "People are having a wedding for the beautiful pictures!" Therefore, only a few will repeat this torment.
I believe that you need to choose one place full of beautiful plans. Forest park of some kind. And there insolently work out. And then they come up with different creativity: two hours of travel - pictures with horses against the background of a dull landscape ... And then you have to go to a restaurant ... It's better to crawl out the entire nearby park and get quite “ordinary” photos with leaves in bokeh.
And the tightness of the "models" makes itself felt - people do not immediately relax. And some more begin to torment and drive them. And you get completely “dead” photos. I think you need to catch live emotions!
The coolest thing is how the photos of the women who were filmed are evaluated: “here I have a stupid face, here my hands (!!!) are full ...” they nafig bokeh and composition! With such criteria of one's own beauty, it is only by chance that you can take a “good” photo.
For a crop, it is very convenient for me to shoot for fifty dollars - almost everything is included (it would have been a little wider). Well, a shirik is also needed - a ransom, a restaurant. But manual optics is difficult - there is little time, and it's easier to make a mistake. Better to let a little more boring bokeh, but the eyes are in focus.
If, nevertheless, I buy a D800, then using the D90 as a second working carcass simply won't rise - I won't be able to sleep peacefully, knowing the difference ;-)

        • Denis

Arkady, in your article on how to film a wedding, it is written that there will be a second article :). It would be necessary to make a separate section with an overview of cameras, lenses, etc. And also break down into themes (stages of wedding shooting). At the wedding, and it is at the wedding, you have to prove yourself in all genres of shooting and at the same time it becomes possible to soberly assess your capabilities (and the capabilities of the equipment) and identify gaps.

  • i-hero-in.narod.ru

Of course, writing such a guide is necessary. And with the description of the subtleties of the settings and shooting! Scenarios, as a rule, are almost the same for all post-Soviet weddings. You just need to seize the moment.
Walk - fast fix (50-85mm / f1.8-2.8) with a ND filter (if there is no 1/8000 shutter speed). Restaurant - the same fix (no filter + shirik, flash with softbox in manual mode (1/8 - 1/32 power), and the camera is also in manual mode (f2.8, 1/125 s.-1/200 s., ISO 400-800) Draw the shadows in a RAW converter.

    • Denis

Quite recently I was filming a wedding just as a guest (fifth or tenth violin ...). And I discovered an unusual effect for myself (so to speak) - photographs differ from those when you shoot yourself, namely by the main photographer. They differ for the better (to taste, of course) with their completely different angles, moments, multilevel views. A kind of “film about how the film was made” + a lot of neatly captured pleasant moments both during the production and in the reportage. All the attention and posing for the main photographer, and the rest of the guest DSLRs don't count. Here, if you have a certain skill, of course, you can pleasantly surprise the newlyweds.

      • i-hero-in.narod.ru

By the way, a correct observation. If only the “main” photographer is in no hurry and does not interfere))). The wedding is, in essence, a reportage. You just need to catch some semi-staged portraits at open aperture with a beautiful background.
It would be interesting to know the experience of photographers in working with the newlyweds when setting the frame. Who finds contact and how? How does stress relieve models? etc.

        • Arkady Shapoval

There are so many nuances, and every single wedding requires a different approach. If you write an article about all the subtleties, you just need to lay out all the experience of working as a photographer. As for capturing the moments - very cool material comes out when working with a second photographer. I really like it when I shoot together with my Nata, for example, I catch moments in a general shot at over-width, at this time Nata shoots portraits with a telephoto camera, however, the assistant has a hard time and few of the clients agree to additional staff.

          • i-hero-in.narod.ru

That's for sure! Usually a photographer is hired on a leftover basis: cheap and free. And then he stands on the sidelines while the “reportage” goes on.

The main thing is not to worry! Over time, develop your own unique style. And then they will invite not just a photographer, but you!

  • Alex beaver

On an unfamiliar device (albeit an additional one) to shoot (and perfectly shoot!) A wedding! I am delighted with your Reduce ...
This is one of your examples of the fact that "it doesn't matter WHAT, but it is important HOW to shoot ..."
Thank you for sharing with us!

  • Boris Badenov

    Another superficial review from Radozhiva.

Particularly touching is the conclusion that “Canon 20D is an obsolete camera that can still do an excellent job. The camera has fast burst shooting, good ergonomics, but not a bunch of modern settings. ”.

On what basis did the author conclude that the camera is outdated, even if he did not even list the technical characteristics of the camera? And what is this “bunch of modern settings” that modern photographers should supposedly lack? Despite the fact that the majority of amateur photographers enter the menu of their camera once in a lifetime.

    And so in every review.

    Some kind of kindergarten, honestly.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I see no reason to write a detailed review of the camera, released 10 years ago. At the same time, I wrote about how the Canon 20D feels in the modern world of CZK.

Based on what, the author concluded that the camera is out of date, even if it did not list any technical characteristics of the camera?

The review clearly states that the camera has a small 1.8-inch display and an old 8 MP matrix, the same goes for the year of manufacture. Please just read the site materials carefully.

      • Yuriy75

Despite the 2004 release, the camera is not that old. USB 2.0, E-TTLII, 5 fps The only thing after modern cameras upsetting is the lack of autoISO. And the shutter sound ... :)

        • Andrey Vyunenko

Yes! Sound !!! .. Yesterday this camera came to me. A complete delight! 😀

    • Lynx

really, to envy so loudly is simply indecent. ))

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

a wish - it would not be bad, in the review of cameras, indicate the model of the lens that was used in compiling the review.

    • Arkady Shapoval

In the review, it is indicated that Porst was standing on the camera with reference to its review.

      • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

in this review I noticed a link ... and noticed that it would be nice to continue doing this, in some early camera reviews this information is missing

  • Denis

Of course, the review differs from hundreds of PR reviews on the network, but everything is clear and understandable that the device is reliable and good, with good performance and by modern standards.
From communication with colleagues shooting on the Canon 50D, he noted a lot of positive reviews and emotions about the latter. There is every reason to assume that the entire Canon 10-60D line is very functional and workhorse :).

  • Albert

Here it is, my old man)))

  • Dmitriy

    My dear old woman)

In general, I agree, the only thing is that I also shoot with manual lenses, so the shooting speed is not critical. Of course, there is noise, but ... a noisy picture from old matrices does not seem as rough as from modern ones. It even reminds something of a film grain. The screen - yes, very inconvenient and uninformative, but the ergonomics are excellent. And as for the reliability of the camera - my eight years is a period. The shutter is excellent. Of the “modern bells and whistles” only shaking off the dust from the matrix is not enough. A small amount of rav-files allows you to fit more than 8 frames on an 1000GB card, which is enough in almost any situation. And the battery calmly and confidently lasts for 800 frames, if you do not raise the flash. In Jepeg, the photos are a little overexposed, the default WB setting gives bluish colors, but in the camera this is easily adjusted. I am very pleased with the corded x-contact. In a word, a wonderful camera for its time and quite workable and interesting today. I think when mine goes to rest - I'll take a 30-ku to replace it - the screen is better, but the picture is the same.

  • Dmitriy

Sorry, lied. I took a cameo with me to the wedding. He shot more than 1100 frames. The next morning, without charging the battery, I went for a walk, taking pictures of the city, people. flowers. He took another hundred shots. A total of 1200, and the camera continued to work, not hinting at a dead battery.

  • Vladimir

thanks for the quality reviews, stumbled upon your site, caught fire with a photograph, I decided to start with such a DSLR, I think everything will work out :) thanks again for the sensible tips and articles for newcomers to us;)

    • Yuriy75

If for starters, then probably 400 (450) D is better. Matrix 10 (12) MP is the live wiew for working with old optics. And for the same money the camera will be with an 18-55 lens, I understand that many do not like them, but for a start it will do. If on such a system learn to get good pictures, then it makes sense to switch to a semi-profile, and this one will be as a reserve and home use.

  • Alexander

Good day, Arkady! Recently, I have been visiting your page more and more often. I have just 20kA ... An excellent device for the money! I ordered it from Japan .. Serves me for 2 years. I shot more than one thousand frames (At first I shot everything). I would like already of course, something new and probably full-length. And with a good lens. Of course, I understand that you can buy 5 mark, but the price of the question ... What advice would you give, in your opinion, which corresponds to a reasonable price and normal quality (I will accept advice from other respondents). And I will recommend a lens for 20k. I really want to try something new.
    Thank you!

    • Yuriy75

Of the full-format ones, a very good matrix with low noise at high sensitivity in 6D and its kit 24-105 4L to it, it can also be used to kill two birds with one stone on the 20-ke. Or the Soviet optics Arkady, many thanks to him, wrote comprehensive reviews for the beginner on this site. Myself bought Mir-24N and Jupiter-37A (caught version under m42). And I’m very much pleased that Soviet optics and any optics where aperture control rings and depth of field scales and focusing distances are preserved make it possible to quickly master many shooting techniques.

  • Oleg

in the fall of 2013 I bought myself a 20D in exchange / addition to my ten-year 10D. I bought it at a very nice price with a battery grip, a 4GB card and a mileage of 17500 - the camera cost exactly $ 100. Considering that its ergonomics are practically the same as on the 10D, I practically didn't have to get used to it. This is a great camera for a small budget.

I bought a Canon 1100d for myself. I did not set high tasks for myself, but as an amateur and under the USSR manual, I thought it would do. Bought in January 2013th. During this time, I clicked more than 12000 tons. frames. Since his son went to study on a photo-video, he decided to buy a camera for him (well, that he would have his own). For 100 green bought Canon 20d. As a result, my 1100d became it, since for a beginner it is much easier to learn on it. I won’t describe all the charms of 20 ki, but I’ll say the main thing with manual optics, the camera copes much more correctly. However, this also applies to other lenses, including whale 18-55.

Is it possible to shoot video on the 20d button

    • anonym

      must not

  • Dmitriy

Died. After 11 years of work. And serious work, including reporting, holidays and weddings. According to my rough estimates, the camera has made about 160 thousand frames over the years without replacing the shutter and without a single repair.
Already goes to replace him 30d. And this despite the fact that there is still 40d, but I really like the picture from the matrix of 20s, and in 30d the screen is more decent. We will remove)

    • Lynx

1200 frames per month? however, thoughtful photographing, without serial scribbling.

      • Dmitriy

Well, for the first few years, he worked very hard ... And then 40d came to replace him, and 20 at first was put on the shelf, and then reactivated and used for personal needs and walks.

    1) Does the 20D support fast flash sync with aka HSS?
    2) Is there a focus trap aka focus trap?

    • Break03

      1. Yes supports, checked with 430 ex2.
      2. If you mean tracking autofocus, that is, AI SERVO mode, and when the object moves, the camera keeps (tries) in focus.
I have both 20ka and 30ka, purely for the soul, so to speak, the fotics are not killed, I take them only to nature in the forest or swamp. For work, there is a more serious ff nikon.
