I saw a lot of photos with amazing bokeh shot on Helios-40. I have long dreamed of acquiring it, and in the autumn of 2018, at the PHOTOFEST in Almaty, company representatives brought several Zenith lenses, and among them HELIOS-40-2-N 1,5 / 85 (looks like this) Here difficulties began (that which does not fit in the head). The lens is heavy in the literal and figurative sense. The fact is that I shoot mostly macro and I'm used to Nikon N AF-S Micro Nikkor 105mm 1: 2.8G ED VR SWM IF Micro 1: 1. Work with aperture rings and presets on HELIOS-40-2-N 1,5 / 85 uncomfortable, its values are not passed to EXIF, it is often not known at what aperture value the shooting took place.

But the picture ... !!! I will say right away that it is not very suitable for macro (focal length 85 mm), either you need to make a decent crop, or use macro rings. But here is a relatively close-up (flowers, leaves, mushrooms) - here Helios-40 is unsurpassed and unpredictable. And you never know what the result will be. This is the intrigue!

Somehow you wait more from Helios-40-2 than flower leaves. Well, that.

What did you want? Muzzles ?, you can take them myself, I take off and love this glass, a heavy and uncomfortable infection, but it is worth it because the picture is sometimes just a fairy tale!

      • Andrei

Kagbe is a portrait lens. Therefore, yes, I wanted to muzzle.

        • Arkady Shapoval

I was promised portraits on the new Zenitar 50 0.95 full frame

          • Andrei

And what, when will they give me a lift?

          • Maria

            Not Bochkreva?

Judging by the reviews, interviews with her, a huge number of subscribers on all resources, she’s, as it were, the semi-official Ambassador of Zenitara.
And from the date of its appearance on sale it takes off exclusively to him.

Although the photos (portraits) are really interesting, with a kind of bias towards pre-Raphaelism.

Thanks! I wonder what photos will be chosen for the gallery.
                Sorry for the spoiler

But before that, she did not shoot Helios and something else manual with no less success. In the same style. And on different cameras. This is a kick in the direction of those who want to compare lenses and other equipment. Just the desired result at the Zenithar and what is it there she is now easier to achieve.

And how many pieces of them were released there is information? The site has a meaningful “since 2018 - small-scale production”. Is it 2 or 3 pieces? Pre-order - is it cutting out each lens by hand in a tube atmosphere? KMZ has a strange approach.

Here are the faces to choose from:https://dburn.ru/catalog/item347.html

          • Andrei

That and on flickr is full. The meaning of so many flower leaves on a portrait lens is simply not very clear.

            • Vlad

And who said that the G-40 is only portrait glass? This is an artistic lens, and when dexterous it is equally good for portraiture and nature, to whom, what, but than to shoot anyone I personally mostly prefer nature, since it is always the most beautiful!

              • Andrei

Did I write ONLY portrait glass, my inattentive friend? I just painted a portrait. Any doubts that this is a portrait?
I give FREE proofs for the inattentive:
                1. https://radojuva.com/2012/03/obzor-gelios-40-2-85mm-f1-5/ “In my vote for the best Soviet portrait lens, the Helios-40-2 is the undisputed leader, while having a huge lead.” - a quote from there.
                2. http://www.zenitcamera.com/archive/lenses/helios-40.html “By the nature of its application, 3) refers to medium-range portrait lenses (waist-length portrait).” - also a quote.
                Continue?
No, I certainly understand that you can shoot anything if you want.
But there are a few but:
                1. The author of the photos, having an excellent macro lens, about which she herself speaks in the text, uses a macro lens that is not quite suitable for this. And, of course, faced with certain difficulties.
                2. You can eat soup with a fork. It will also be quite artistic.
You can tighten the screw with a hammer, not with a screwdriver (autofocus) or a screwdriver (manual). With the same hammer, in the absence of a mixer, you can knead the solution, by the way. It turns out very artistically. The words, however, are not very artistic, but if you look in general ...

              • Arkady Shapoval

And I’d like to draw your attention to this, on the network there is quite often the opinion that it is the G-40 that is best suited for close-ups (not portraits) and that they are very fond of taking a certain art photo

              • Maria

The argument is generally not worth a damn.

                Genres are a relative concept.

There is no such genre - nature. In the other case, it is a proto still life of flowers. If you think logically, then a still life with plants is a portrait of these plants)

In general, this is the same subject, only with nature. The subject, depending on the goals, is either only macro (detailed photograph of the object, sometimes advertising), or for artistic purposes - portraits.

It's like arguing about whether a photo is considered a landscape in which the foreground subject is highlighted and the background is blurred. Or it will already be a “portrait” of an inanimate object.

There you can argue up to very funny conclusions.

                And I like nature.
The difference with the portrait is that the portrait is often very limited in the implementation of creative ideas due to the fact that the author needs to support skinton, to retouch something.

And about the "portrait" of a blue bell, no one will say that the bell there is too un-blue. The boundaries are wider.

              • Roman

You didn’t see how they evaluate the photo of the LED on the synthesizer on different profiles and compare whether it is like that or not.

            • Roman

If my memory serves me right, then Helios was used in x-ray photography initially and in military equipment to photograph on film the image formed on the screen of the x-ray machine and the radar. For this, both high aperture and characteristic color transmission with a slope in the blue-green part of the spectrum. This is about the use of a portrait lens.

In the 40s / 50s they thought something like this - but let's take 85 / 1.5. In the blessed scoop, also under TK from the tank factory, otherwise nothing will cost morons without a lens. And how else can it be used? And like this. Well ok, let it be for portraits.

              • Arkady Shapoval

It is reliably known that this Helios-40 (optical scheme) was used in the night-vision device, the so-called Cyclops 85 / 1,5.

              • Andrei

Previously, with such Helios, girls were given. There is even a forum on this subject. So not only an x-ray, a portrait, a night vision device.

              • Roman

If they don’t give it now, then they won’t give it to Helios either.

              • Arkady Shapoval

There is now Zenit-M and Zenitar 35/1 for half a million, with him the chances are probably higher :)
