Samsung GX-L1. Review from the reader Radozhiva

Review of the Samsung GX-L1 camera specially for Radozhiva, prepared Alexey Ovoshchnikov.

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

Back to the past with the Samsung GX-L1 (Pentax * ist DL2) camera.

This camera model is better known under the brand name Pentax. Samsung for a short time released its clones of Pentax cameras. The Samsung camera is fully compatible with all Pentax K af lenses (non-motorized autofocus lenses as well as manual lenses). Also compatible with a third-party lens under the K mount.

Samsung GX-L1 was produced since 2006 and became the last in the line of amateur DSLRs from Samsung. In fact, back in 2004 a very similar Pentax ist-DS camera came out. I was convinced of the complete identity of the above models. In 2007 - 2009, only semi-professional GX-10 and GX-20 were produced. In any case, all the DSLRs from Samsung have long been discontinued, because the Pentax K20 clone represented by the Samsung GX-20 was the last released SLR camera from Samsung.

Actually, how the ubiquitous and omnivorous company Samsung works for amateur photographers is outrageous. In the late eighties, Samsung released its first SLR camera with interchangeable lenses, but after several models the production was closed. This lasted about four years. In 2006, a line of digital SLRs was opened, which was described above. Four models in four years and production is closed. Then in 2010, the interesting line of Samsung NX mirrorless mirrors started with its own bayonet mount and its own optics park. Four series of cameras of different levels over 4 years, and the production of cameras in general and the NX line in particular, are being minimized. Now you can still buy Samsung NX optics and cameras, but there will be no new products and most likely no support either. Are there not too many fours in this story?))).

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

The technical characteristics of the Samsung GX-L1 camera in question are more than modest even ten years ago. Today, not everyone wants to mess with such an old camera. But the camera is not the worst and has a CCD matrix and its own pleasant color reproduction. We can say that the camera has its own charm. This is the beauty of a 6 megapixel CCD matrix. Matrix model - Sony ICX413.

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

The camera display is not tiny and you can watch the shots, but how it fades in bright light can interfere with normal operation. An undoubted advantage is the presence of a monochrome display on the top of the camera. Unfortunately, the monochromatic display does not have a backlight.

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

The camera supports Russian in the menu. The control menu in it is implemented unusually and requires some getting used to. Unfortunately, the performance in the menu of the camera itself is also not happy.

I would also like to note the lack of a USB 2.0 port in the camera. The camera only supports the first version of USB and works extremely slowly with information. Using fast memory cards does not solve the problem with brakes. To record a RAW photo onto a memory card format SD takes 3-4 seconds. This is despite the fact that the buffer of the camera itself can only hold three frames. Already in the second second of continuous shooting in RAW, strong brakes begin. Of course, the camera shoots better in JPEG, but I don’t really like on-camera JPEG. I would like to note that before the firmware update, the camera supports memory cards up to 2 GB inclusive, and after the update it can work with 16 GB memory cards. The camera stores more than a thousand frames in RAW format on 16 GB. A strange feature is that the camera cannot shoot RAW+JPEG. Probably the iron of that time did not hold up. It's better to shoot in RAW as the camera tends to underexpose the frame by 1/3-2/3 of a stop. With manual optics, the frame is even more underexposed.

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

Comfortable application is landscape, subject and maybe portrait photography.
I also successfully used this camera to create timelapse videos.

If you are interested in HDR processing and timelapse folding from photos, then write me about it in the comments. If there are many comments on this topic, then I will probably write a separate article.

Yes, this decision was successful. There is no intervalometer in the camera itself and comes to the rescue this here is the camera remote control. To shoot a series of frames, you must put the camera in burst mode. Then use the button lock in the depressed position on the remote itself. The remote control also fits Canon's amateur cameras, too.

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

The connector for connection is covered by a door that automatically locks when opening and closing. Unfortunately, the camera has a non-standard USB connector. The funny thing is that Pentax has long used this particular connector in its cameras. Even the K5 II has this not very common port. Only on K3 it was replaced by a completely standard USB 3.0. The Samsung GX-L1 camera supports power from the outlet through the power supply and this is a plus for working with the camera in the studio.

I would also like to note the poor implementation of power in a number of Pentax cameras (Samsung). Almost all older models have a problem with fast-draining AA batteries. This problem is well described on the Penta forum. The reason lies in the tiny maintenance-free battery that wears out quickly. As a result, even with well-charged batteries, the camera may turn off. This is especially true for 1,2 Volt batteries. No solution to this problem was found. You just need to use good fresh batteries and have a spare kit in reserve. This is actually very inconvenient.

Samsung GX-L1

Samsung GX-L1

When working with fresh batteries, the camera can take 400-600 photos. However, this is true in the warm season. In winter, batteries run much faster.

I haven’t personally checked it, but based on the information on the manufacturer’s website, this camera does not support autofocus with modern Pentax non-motorized lenses. I have never had a single such lens in my hands. In general, the fleet of modern Pentax lenses leaves much to be desired. How good a Pentax with good old manual optics is just as bad with a modern one. It is, but so far it is very few in use.

Image quality and high ISO noise. This is a clear plus of this camera. Comparing a few years ago, three completely different systems in the face Nikon D90 и Canon 550D and this Samsuns GX-L1, I came to the conclusion that at high ISO with its whale 18-55 Nikon leads quite a bit ahead of Samsung, but Canon is noticeably behind with its unpleasant color noise and terrible noise in the shadows. I myself was very surprised at how Canon merges the noise and how well the matrix of the ancient Samsuns GX-L1 works (to be precise, it was a Pentax IST DL). Of course Canon 550D much cooler in color reproduction and more convenient in post-processing if shot at low ISO.

Shot but whale Samsung D-XENON 18-55 mm f / 3.5-5.6. By the way, here Samsung was pleasantly surprised and its whale 18-55 is better than the Pentax whale. At Samsung, the sharpness is significantly higher. Perhaps because the first one has one more optical element in its design. There is also a photo on Vivitar 135 mm F1: 2,8 и Tamron SP 500 mm F1: 8

Almost all of the presented was shot for a long time and also became part of the story. Many frames with amateur processing. Here is such a camera from the past. Today it is more history than reality.

  • regular reader anonymous

Arkady, how long can you tolerate this nonsense on Radozhiv? Thanks to Alexei for the work, but this is not a level but a complete bottom. Either it supports lenses, then it doesn’t support it, then the d90 is just a little better than the finished old ssd in terms of noise, then some kind of complete gag. Amuse philosophizing about the noise of the matrix and the system as a whole. You yourself have never allowed this. With such reviews, Radozhiv rolls into the corner. I am in favor of limiting such “authors” or seriously strengthening filtering and writing conditions.
I have more than 20 years of experience in digital photography, I started back in 1998 and I immediately see that Alexey is swimming in this matter and even proves something in the comments. The same Rodion, if he writes about Soviet trash, it is interesting and knowledgeable, despite the fact that he is a schoolboy or student. And here is such a waste in the text. Arkady, do something, or I'll unsubscribe! Imagine if other observers start posting this on their site?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you.
I see the original texts of Alexei and several times already asked him to more closely monitor both the text itself and its semantic content. I am also very tired of publishing such materials. From now on, the bar for material requirements has been raised.

    • Alexei (review author)

I am grateful for any constructive criticism, but you just freak out for nothing. You just read the text inattentively. I myself have been in digital photography for less than three years, and I myself am less than 30 years old, I can’t understand how a photographer with your 20 years of experience can write such an unreasonable jumble. For three years I shot on a variety of cameras and optics. All that I write is based on my practical experience, and pure truth, I like to compare cameras. This is all my time and my money. The purpose of my articles is to share experiences and receive practical advice and constructive criticism. Regarding grammar and revolutions, I again apologize; I live abroad my head is full and sometimes I don’t have enough attention to see all the errors in Russian texts. Of course, Arkady has to spend time editing such an illiterate article, but he gets the material. Here I point blank here I do not see the queue of those who want. Photographer and publicist are very different activities. All my acquaintances, professional and amateur photographers, do not understand why I should spend time writing articles for a site from Ukraine. Once again I will say that I do this for the community photo and share my experience. So I showed the HDR timelapse. This is a time consuming and complex process. Especially with such an old camera. There, work with exposure bracketing and the addition of frames in a special software with presetting. At least you watched it or saw that the article was written, I immediately went to the comments?

      • regular reader anonymous

you can only hear “I'm a fine fellow, and all are Dartanians”. The review does not carry any cognition at all and is all built on subjective opinions. Alexey spends time not for the photo community, but for himself. The photo community sees it perfectly

      • Andrei Other

The article is really gamut. I don’t know what you wanted to convey to the readers, but I read that this is a very unusual camera and only you are able to appreciate its charms, others are not given.

        • Alexei (review author)

Where do I have this written? You at least write the truth. Maybe you have a distorted understanding of what is written?

    • Alexey

Well, stand up for Rodion. He is not a student, much less a schoolboy, but a very armful man. If you are a regular reader, you should already have understood this.

      • Andrei Other

But is it so bad to be a schoolboy or student that you have to stand up for Rodion? IMHO, the head at the age of 15-20 is not yet clogged with clichés and other nonsense, it is still capable of great achievements. I also thought that Rodion was a schoolboy or student.

        • Alexey

IMHO? I also thought so, in 15-20 years. And to be a schoolboy or student is wonderful, but this is only the beginning of the journey. If you thought you were a schoolboy or student, then you are either recently reading this site or you are not interested in people.

          • B. R. P.

In the comments to the December 2015 review, Rodion wrote: "I am not an optical physicist, I am just a student of the 11th grade."
            https://radojuva.com/2015/12/gelios-44-12-f58-sm-p-kmz-s-zamenennymi-linzami-obzor-redkogo-obektiva-ot-chitatelya-radozhivy/

            • Alexey

Maybe so, then doubly happy for him, a very worthy start.

          • Andrei Other

I think so at 38 years of age based on my experience.
For example, an average engineer develops up to 27 years, and then he works due to his own achievements, his experience.

You have already been answered by age.

And yes, I'm not interested in people. But I have a good memory, I remember everything that happened to me from the age of 4.

            • anonym

Do you speak up to 27?
And when does he graduate? Not at 23-24 by chance?
Those. Does it develop in just 3-4 years?
              Nonsense.

              • Alexey

And I agree, gaining experience as quickly as possible in 3-4 years after the university, then it depends on the person, or he continues to study all his life, or very poorly progresses only due to work experience.

  • Spleen

Normal review. I read with interest.

    • Valery A.

Normal review for an amateur. Alexey, take heart (in response to criticism, if I may say so). I read here that the Sony-ICX413 matrix, I thought like Nikon's d40, turns out to be even older - like d100, and it came out almost a year earlier than d40, and a little more advanced in terms of performance characteristics, it's interesting. Probably, it was worth drawing a parallel with the much more famous d40. And on time lapses - yes, it would be interesting to read, I have not yet delved into this topic.

      • Alexei (review author)

Thanks for the interesting info on the matrix with D100. I would never have thought that one matrix. All the same, Nakon gives out other colors in its RAW and JPEG.

  • Alexei (review author)

Oh hochma) did you see your nickname ?? I am Aleksey and you are EustaceFritZZZ…. So ? Nice to meet you. And by the way, about drugs ... You probably have no idea how photographers live and what kind of events they work in stlitsa) I myself do not use anything, but this (drugs) is quite common here. Already you will surprise no one. Did you accidentally make a mistake with the topic of the site? maybe you should visit a website about a healthy lifestyle? Elena Malysheva will tell you how harmful it is to smoke ... and how useful)))

    • Alexei (review author)

Perhaps you are a sullen wedding drunk from the outback.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Transition to personality, insults. All off topic.

      • Valery A.

You are not right. There are no gloomy people in the village, especially wedding people.

        • Alexei (review author)

Yes, where does the village? I'm talking about a specific commentator. He begins with insults because he did not bother to read the text as those who liked him. So the image of a lazy and always dissatisfied photographer is drawn without a drop of creativity.

          • Valery A.

Well, you mentioned the outback, I thought about the Russian village and did not pass by the desonance with the gloomy one. Drunk - I agree, gloomy - no.

      • Vladimir Buritsky

Alexey, write such a review again, you have to unsubscribe from the site of Arkady

  • Alexander

Why did you all attack the author. Of course this is not a review of the level of Arcadia. But no one forces you to read. A good review is not a comment, do not write in 5 minutes. Do not like it, write better. Anyone can criticize.
PS. I did not like the review either.

    • Arkady Shapoval

About 10 years ago I did weak reviews, everything needs time and experience. When I read the reviews of 2009, I understand that a lot needs to be redone. Much has been redone.

  • Charles

Not the worst review, in my opinion.

  • Oleg

I don't like the writing style, this is the level, sorry, 5th grade, Alexey. Yes, you are not a writer or a humanitarian, but that is no excuse. To make the article interesting to read, it should be written in an interesting way, but not this one ... , maybe you should ask for help from a person with a liberal education? Surely there are such people in your circle. Well, it turns out that you simply lower the rating of the site Arcadia. Approach the issue of grammar and literary presentation more seriously, because, as the saying goes: "I got down to the buzz, don't say that it's not hefty"

    • Ivan Karpov

It’s hard for Arkady to constantly review a bunch of equipment, it takes a lot of time, helpers are needed. Maybe you will help, since you understand?

      • Oleg

I don't know much about technology. But there is a desire to understand, therefore I have been reading this site and have been reading it for a very long time. Therefore, I see how Alexei's articles look like against the background of Arkady's articles ...

  • 111

As a compromise, just dry technical data and raw photos taken at different settings and in different conditions. And personal impressions and subjective in the comments.

  • lech

The review is informative. Unfortunately, at the time of its release, the Trolls began to crawl out of their hibernation.

  • Trueash

I was wondering, I don't understand the reasons for the assaults on the author. Every second - at least Vasily Peskov, together with Yuri Rost. And he knows how to shoot, and write, and on a typewriter ... First, the resource is free and free, no one owes you anything. Not satisfied with something? look for information on other resources, the Internet is large. Not found? buy a subject and view as much as you like. For example, from time to time I come across offers to sell different Samsung, but what kind of animal it is - go and find out. Personal impressions of using a particular device are no less important than performance characteristics. Listen to you, so some mobile phone drives the d700 - well, of course, the mobile has 24 megapixels, while the d700 has only 12 ...

    • Noone

One thing is interesting, and another thing is that the review is terrible. Very hard to read, unstructured and full of opinions. Who needs it? This is complete on the Internet, every student (no offense to Rodion, he's done) can write this in 10 minutes. Aleksey, who is the author of this masterpiece here, boasts of his labor, time-forces, etc. but he does not see that his work ultimately falls short of the C grade, and spoils Radozhive’s reputation, and this is Arkady’s blog, why are there other authors here since this blog? Look at the photo ru or the glass house, let Alexei write his opuses, there, experienced people will level it up in two minutes, here on Radozhiv there is at least some control over the level of tenacity of those commenting

    • Oleg

Let's imagine for a moment the following picture: imagine that the Internet is your city, and sites about photography are coffee establishments. They are all free in your city. Somewhere good coffee, somewhere not very good, but there is one cafe in the city where exceptionally delicious aromatic strong coffee of various and refined varieties is brewed. Her name is “Radozhiva”. Naturally, you and most coffee lovers go to it. Sit, chat, have a cup of strong drink. You know that the head of the coffee house, and also the main creator, Arkady, is an expert in his field, and the free service is not a reason for him to treat his business carelessly. But then one day you come to your favorite place, but that day there was a completely different person in the kitchen, Alexey. And so he takes you out and serves you coffee. Do you know how he made it? He took a handful of grains, chipped with a hammer, poured it into your cup, poured hot (not boiling water, but it will do) water, mixed it, and voila! Done. Drink. Do you have any complaints? Come on ... for free, drink in silence.

      • Alex fg.

Recently I called Arkady, listened to me, told everything and prompted. I ask him why he is a nikonist, and he answers me that he is not a nikonist and not a satanist and not a kenonist, he just loves his job. I rarely see a person who is not fixated on the brand

        • First Substation

          - Why are you a Nikonist?
          - You know, when my friend bought the first DSLR, he was told that Nikon's whale lens is a little better than Kenon's. Therefore, when I bought the camera, I did exactly the same. I have nothing against Kenon, it just happened for me /
          xD
Seriously - the reasons can be different and they are not always rational)

  • Artem

It seems that the photos are well made, especially when you consider the age of the camera, but the review is somehow indistinct. It is not interesting written. Especially for a long time I tried to read “Actually, how the ubiquitous and omnivorous Samsung company works for amateur photographers causes indignation. "
And the author, learn to perceive criticism, learn to write, read the classics and you will succeed.

  • Outcast

And by the way, where did the previous review of our Dumas about 1000th of samsa like (to my shame I don’t remember the model anymore - reading is so exciting).

  • Andrei

Since we are talking about Samsung cameras, it would be nice to cover something from the NX series. At the Samsung NX-500 itself, I’m not going to change it in the next 5-7 years. In modern UPC there is nothing radically better at a price of up to 1000 cu
The same NX-300 / 3000s are shot with dignity, you won’t find new ones. there are mere pennies.

    • Valery A.

Well light up, if not scary.

    • Artem

Who needs these samsungs? all the more ancient, if even current ones are unnecessary

      • First Substation

Well, someone does not need Industar, but someone is very interested

  • anonym

Explain why shoot with a 55mm FR whale lens during the day with ISO800 and 1/800 shutter speed?

    • Novel

This happens when you leave a dark place and forget to return ISO back. But AutoISO does not work out as it should.

      • anonym

        Ok, accepted.
But why should such photographs be included in the review?
ISO 800 is a lot? Well, decent for such an old camera. And on this ISO noise is very clearly visible, and on ISO 1600 it is even stronger. Is the author sure that the Canon 550D is noisier?

    • Alexei de paris

And you write two links in the first comment and someone can and will understand the cunning train of your thoughts. Maybe you forgot to attach to the message? You would like to write a nickname for yourself, or else solid anonymous letters. And looking for you is inconvenient. Do not be offended, just write a link to the photo immediately and they will understand you.

  • anonym

photo with a flower with shooting parameters: Iso 3200, 55mm, f10, 1/2500 sec. Of course, you can consider the noise, but it is much smaller than the Samsung one at Iso 800.

    • Alexei (review author)

There, without processing, but I posted a photo with processing and in places I pulled the shadows. It was a long time ago and did not really know how to do RAW post-processing. Distinguish between noise before processing and noise after tightened shadows.

It is a pity that an interesting review of a rare camera is written so illiterately. And it's not just the missing commas. Sorry…

  • anonym

I read reviews about this device on another resource, looked there at the photos taken by him. It is a decent device for little money. Ability to work with manual lenses, metering, focus confirmation.

  • Stas

It's okay! It's always like this on the Internet, there is an author and people love him ... and God forbid! God forbid, someone else will write - they will immediately crap. A good view of a good camera, stackers, defenders of CCD matrices and other lovers of ancient remains, braces and stability complain.

    • Outcast

Listen well, don't you nest here a blizzard about the authors. There are a lot of them - a photographer from Vladivostok wrote about boots, Eshmakov, someone else wrote in the homemade section fascinatingly ... In general, the problem is that there are not many of them at all - yes, but that is easy to explain - the site is not about high-tech, narrowly focused.
Lovers of the remains of the ancients - yes, of course, they will outlive us all taken together, about stability and fasteners - you’re my friend, then switch the box to an animal, for example, otherwise it’s not at all clear why you are so rushing.))))

  • Igor

At the beginning of the article, you expect to see the full characteristics of the camera in order to understand what it is about, but it all starts with water. Then finally we come to the words "Technical characteristics of the camera in question" and after only about 6 megapixel CCD))))

  • Outcast

You know how little of many when only a dozen). Here even commentators about two times and miscalculated. Here, how are they more convenient to explain to analysts or ours from God so that it would not be very offensive?) Iron from the 60-70s has not yet entered the era of antiques. Try to find the top rangefinder glasses of the same boot for sale on the expanses of the former Soviet Union, for example. If you find it, the price will pinch) Do you understand what I mean? Probably not. I’m telling you, for example, that a ton of fd, md, ar, and so on, as you say old stuff, was sawn up before the mirrorless ones came out. And not one. Even more perished in the attics, sheds and so on. Find a decent safe spot from the boot of the fl series, wind up on the last ff from anyone from 85 competitors and look at the result. Any of the threaded 2 takumaras for 55-20 # ye screw. Give it a try. Spend some time and write what happened. Take minolta MD 30, clean it, adjust it, fasten it and take it off (the price of the issue for restoration is approx. 1.7-10ye). I’ll say that if you shot a kada thread on types from Nikon’s boot and so on, you will be surprised and drink a glass about it or smoke aside))).
With regards to sisidi and so on.
People with a prism inside themselves are able to give out on a sheet of paper with a hole in the center. You want to ff, you want to film, to the devil of a bald ...
There will be 6 megs for your insta with a large margin.
    On that and finish)

    • Artem

I found one dude. takes a picture on b / w film and gives out stories that you are not on samsung, not on sony, nor on nikan, take it into reality. at least get yourselves and cover yourself with your lenses. NOT the technique removes, but the head. Throw away your canons, for you have not understood the main thing.

      • Adon

So the plot of photography and technical capabilities are, as it were, different categories.

Regarding criticism towards the author of the article, all those who criticized the article most should now show the class, and issue a worthy article!
As an amateur, I was interested in looking at a rare beast (I'm talking about the Samsung camera with interchangeable lenses).

  • Oleg

“Here is such a…” - this is not the word parasite, it is a definite article in Russian. Why “this is this”, I do not speak Russian well? Yes, there is not enough article in the Russian language at times, "this is here." Humor. Publicism is a complicated thing, I liked the photos, the review is certainly imperfect, some topics are not fully disclosed: for example, focusing, how many autofocus points does the camera have? In general, Alexey needs to have a plan for writing an article, well, for example: the history of the camera, construction, ergonomics, more to say about the old CCD matrix, autofocus operation, work under difficult lighting conditions. And to dwell on these topics in more detail, the devil is in the details. And so I still read the review with pleasure, I think you shouldn't attack the author so hard: "We all learned a little something and somehow ..."

  • dragon yes not snape

The article is really hard to read. Arkady can make a template for writing articles like a questionnaire: first, those data, then photos with different settings, etc. to minimize gag. And of course “this is this and this is the very thing” - here we need a Lynx. He was merciless to this.

  • Yura

    I will support you Oleg
we had such a camera when we studied and I remember my feelings from a digital SLR
but to write a review and show her work, I think it will be difficult, the photos have long been lost and the camera
the junk was built a long time ago, it was nice to beat up the "old lady"

  • Archie

Instead of discussing the camera, everyone discusses the review.
My fi to you with a brush.
