Minced bokeh

If someone is tired of the boring 'bakeshki' obtained with Planarov, SonnarovOtusov and Heliosov, then in this article Radozhiva proposes a 'hard-core' solution for creating 'unique' minced bokeh.

Minced bokeh

Minced bokeh

It is very easy to create an 'interesting' bokeh - just ask your grandmother for a meat grinder attachment, which you can then install instead of a light filter on your favorite lens. I attached this attachment to the lens Minolta MC Rokkor-PF 1: 1.4 f = 58mm using tape. But it's easier to stick it on safety filter :). Then you can go and take off the fabulous 'meat grinder' minced bokeshki.

Meat grinder filter

Meat grinder filter

Such a focus will only work with the use of high-aperture optics. The higher the F number, the more visible this 'filter' will appear in photographs.

Also on the topic, I advise you to look at the review MC Zenitar-ME1 1,7 / 50 :)

    Joyfully exhausted, or what ...?
Previously, there were really cool reviews - and recently, either something really stupid and useless for realities, or something like that with “overwhelming wit”, also from the category - just to write at least some article ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Out of breath.

      • Vasya.N

Something a branch of Chinese cameras has stalled, it ought to be removed ...

    • Oleg

I just don’t understand what kind of questions there may be for a person who does this on a voluntary basis spending all his time. Create your blog, surpass Radozhiva, we will all be happy for you and most importantly constantly more new ideas, new reviews. Indeed, why are these boring industries needed? I would like a review of Lake for example. I’m just sure you will immediately be overwhelmed with curative lenses, because this is such a routine in our post-Soviet space. After all, every second Soviet photographer must have shot on a Watering Can. Thanks to Arkady for work, just a window to another world in our difficult time

Everyone should do what he or she has undertaken with high quality (and not “even if somehow, jamb-awkwardly, but somehow, if you don’t like it, you did it yourself”

Everyone should do the job with high quality, for which he took up (and not “let it be at least somehow, jamb-awkward, but at least somehow, if you don’t like it, do it yourself”)

As I understand it, you go to a restaurant and eat slop there (and what if you don't like it, then cook better yourself ..) ...
I very much sympathize with you with such an approach to life .. (You are still obviously sitting in the Stone Age, because you do not understand that everyone should do their own thing, and once you have undertaken to do something qualitatively, this is the overall progress )

        • Arkady Shapoval

Let's take the facts. What is poorly done? Maybe something for you, Anatoly, remains incomprehensible in this article, or maybe something is not explained in the previous SIGMA MINI-WIDE II 1: 2.8 f = 28mm MULTI-COATED MACRO review or the previous single JUPITER-12 2,8 review / 35 to the full-format Central Committee?

        • Oleg

It’s just that we didn’t spoil us all a lot and we constantly want something fresh and new, which is just physically very difficult. Well, people do not send Elks en masse to the review, watering cans do not lie in the chests of our grandfathers, but simple heliks, industrialists and jupiters lie. The site is largely devoted to Soviet optics Arkady does not hide it. Well, I do not like an article about stuffing bokeh; there are interesting articles about crop identification and about discrete portraiture for example. It's just that we are all different and it’s not possible to please everyone. Someone will like one another.

          • Anatoly

            Correctly
This is what we are talking about - if you take the bar - then you need to observe it.
This is the sign of the master - that each next work should not be weaker than the previous one (for this there is a bar that the author takes)

And the fact that after an artist or a writer, after a masterpiece, there is rubbish - this is not an excuse for the authors, as “readers are accustomed to quality products” ..

He taught his readers, took upon himself the bar - and if you please, observe it.

          • Anatoly

“Just physically very difficult” is not an excuse.
If somewhere in Zimbabwe people do not know the elementary multiplication table, then from their point of view it is quite understandable that knowing the multiplication table is “physically very difficult,” if not impossible.
This is to say that do not talk about other work on the possibilities.
For you, let it be “physically very difficult” (and it seems to you that it cannot be otherwise - as for a native, knowing twice or twice)

And the author undertook - therefore, either “it is not physically difficult for him,” or he understood that it would be difficult, but knew what he would overcome (I realized from myself the idea that the author was deliberately initially undertaken with the goal of doing something like a mess).

Took it - it means keep the bar (and not do a tyap-blooper) in any work (not only in photos and blogs)

            • Arkady Shapoval

I am waiting for the answer to my question on specifics and facts. And then they lit one flame here.

              • anonym

This is not a flame, these are the first swallows. It's just that the bar is lowered when articles appear about meat grinder filters, sprinkling salt on lenses, when everyone in a crowd mocks Polo .... Where is the new blood?

              • Arkady Shapoval

If minced bokeh isn't interesting to you, it's up to you. Moreover, the article is comic. Pay attention - comic. Some readers take this too seriously, from which they themselves suffer. When, in fact, I asked what was wrong, for example, in the previous chewed up reviews of Sigma and Yu-12, they were silent. Our people are not humorous and aggressive :)

              • anonym

The reviews of Sigma and Yu-12 are detailed as always. Silence means everything is in order and the author does not need to blow fanfare endlessly, confessing love as a girl.)

              • Elena

Arkady, do not try to satisfy everyone, there will always be an unsatisfied one - full of the need to assert himself at someone's expense. And your resource is interesting, I receive it by subscription and regularly look. I wish you good luck and progress!

            • Artem

Ahahahah ... Anatoly-like people began to move down the roof, they built some kind of bar ahaha, made laugh ... .. For many, this blog is primarily of an educational nature about technique and tactics and what to do with all this, but you draw the bar here, it would be better to be silent and did not make people laugh, ,, neighing heartily))))

              • anonym

Explain, since you understand what “tactics is and what to do with it all.” And also teach you to understand everything in the world without learning how to write texts correctly.

              • Artem

Anony, are you even ashamed to write your name, what can you teach ?, put a camera on a shelf better.

  • MICHAEL

Does the effect depend on the aperture value of the lens?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, of course it does. The article indicates the same number F.

  • Dmitry M.

    Gelikov's bokeh secret is open)))

  • Oleg

for general development, the article is interesting. there is nothing special to paint here, which is why it is so short.
Most of the techniques are already described here, so already “useful” lens reviews “what to choose and buy” are no longer frequent. But still, very interesting articles slip through how to choose a technique, and others are just interesting to read

  • Oleg

but regarding the opening of a forum on topics here (for example, an analogue of photo.uy / not advertising /) here is a very correct decision.
And I would also like to read in your authorship articles on topics similar to the one where you described how to photograph in church. That is, thematic like “how to photograph love stories”, “how to photograph children”, etc. Tobish with examples of photos, secrets of mastery)

  • Anton

Hello. The article is not necessary for me. I used to indulge myself in making softening filters on the crop, switching to a full frame, expensive financially for me, I no longer began to tinker a technique that was very dear to me so that I could broadcast a piece of iron from a meat grinder to it. I don’t know what to do who needs those who have certain attachments. Well, guys, photographers, from a meat grinder to hang a penny on a lens for which I saved money is not a small amount of money, in my opinion it is a perversion. Well, why do I need this most efficient bokeh on the Nikon DC-Nikkor 105 / 2D AF lens? Once again I felt sorry for the technique from such a perversion! Even if there is an old honor for her and respect, even a new one is a mockery of her beloved child. Guys, this is purely my opinion. In general, thanks to Arkady, his articles teach a lot, everyone takes their own in them. I decided on the lens and skillfully bought the lens, competently tested it confidently and boldly picked it up and started shooting. His articles help me a lot with many interesting tricks. But guys with a heel from a meat grinder .. horror of course. In any case, thank you, Arkady, you personally taught me a lot how to communicate with photo equipment!

    • Arkady Shapoval

I don’t think you feel sorry for my rockcore :)

      • Anton

Good time to you. Thank you for your work Arkady, based on your reviews, I switched from crop to full frame, but the nuances were different. Your reviews help me figure it out. My camera is now nikon d700, now transition from it only to nikon d4s! Many thanks to you for reviewing the NIKON AF 180 mm f / 2.8D IF-ED lens Nikkor bought this beautiful lens! And also for the review of the Nikon 105mm f / 2D AF DC-Nikkor lens, I also bought this miracle lens (by the way, I figured out the DC function, as you wrote, you cannot pass by such a lens!) Thank you so much for the focusing section, this is a very informative article for me desk book! Thank you for the article about the flash photo on the basis of which I bought sb 910 I use it during the day and in poor lighting. We live in the Farther East, we do not have photos of shops and service centers, but we have a master, Uncle Vanya, who does the adjustment by eye and cleans the matrix with a cotton swab and blows off the dust with a pear, by the way, you have a good thing about dust. We live in a remote area thanks to your reviews the photographers help us a lot! But on the other hand, we have Japan nearby ... personally, I buy only branded goods from Japan! Here are the lenses that a sailor from Japan brought me a miracle but not one of them has no front and back focus! I have pleasant memories of Jupiter and Geleos, but I buy only branded top ones. By the way, they don't buy nikon d610 and 810 and 750 from us for well-known reasons, we have a popular nikon d4s since Japan is 40 km away! So in a year I will switch to this device. Write Arkady a review about nikon d4s if you have the opportunity! I am also glad to thank you for your invaluable work!

        • Novel

And what do D4S from Japan generally give for a penny? And who are these people 40 km from Japan who “do not buy nikon d610 and 810 and 750 for obvious reasons?” Enlighten Russia.

          • Anton

Good time. What's surprising? About 610 and b750 I will not write to anyone who needs to know. D4s yes for a penny (for dollars we buy, of course, figuratively it was said about a penny) - we buy places you need to know. What to write to you. Pros do not take amateur trash, unless they put their hand on d750 and then throw it off through Avito. We do not really have demand for amateur cameras d610 and d750 and a lot of pixel d810 I think a lot has been written about them to repeat why. Good luck and beautiful photos. And we have no photo shops and workshops. One master we have, Uncle Vanya, blows away dust from the matrix with glizma ... For example, I bought two lenses in Japan for a penny the other day - Nikon 105mm f / 2D AF DC-Nikkor and Nikon 180mm f / 2.8D ED-IF AF Nikkor china goods We do not buy sigma and tamrons for well-known reasons. My carcass did not grow, the test and lenses of the top range, so I don’t know what a back and front focus are. Good luck in your work!

          • Anton

Smuggling a d4c carcass is easy. We’re hiding on a ship in different places, and customs aren’t particularly looking for we all know them. And as for the lenses in general, the Japanese are silent. They give them to the load at all for free. Mother Russia is corruption and how not to defeat her. Well, what else do you write, I think about the photo technique a lot of bones are washed out. We have one such region where there are no problems with photo equipment and there are no workshops either, we immediately reset it if we have problems, but this is rarely the case with purely Japanese products unless you break the focus motor yourself :-)

            • Novel

Anton, do not pull the cat for a causal place ... prick how much they took 105/2 and 180 / 2.8 (you can in rubles or dollars or yen), and here we will all estimate how much they earn on us. And on D4S in fair condition, what is the price?

              • Anton

Good time. The lenses are really cool, right on target without a miss and not a single miss on the open, guys take the right glasses and you will not have problems with focus accuracy. I think I’m writing off topic. I wish you all success with all my heart!

  • Jacob

In some photographs, the background resembles a woolen carpet ....))))

  • Yarkiya

Who said that the 35mm f / 1,8G DX AFS doesn’t twist bokeh, and not one Helios will twist like that.

    • anonym

I agree. Not one Helios will spin such a shameful bokeh.)

      • Yarkiya

Wow, captain of evidence, thanks for enlightening me.

  • Yarkiya

But all this is business, here is such a cardboard circle. A clerical knife in five minutes.

    • anonym

Please tell me, on Helios-81N 50mm F2.0 MC, diameter 52mm do, the pattern itself on the diameter of the lens?

      • Yarkiya

And figs knows him, I cut from the bulldozer, you want to cut any drawing, experiment.

  • Sergei

    Cool lens (Minolta MC Rokkor-PF 1: 1.4 f = 58mm)
I want this for a long time

  • Oleg R

    Class!!

  • anonym

Some arrogant snobs in the comment made their way. Forgot (or didn't know) the golden rule: do you criticize? - offer! That's just it. Suggest something useful for the site. Canon 85mm f / 1,2, for example. The site is very informative, there are no such details about such a quantity of equipment anywhere else. All content is authentic. Now you can add pictures in the comments, it became possible, so there is progress. What to bother you? Beads in front of pigs ...

  • Yulina

Arkady, as always great! What you need is spring, nature and minced bokeh. I will definitely try it!

    • anonym

Really try? And what? Meat grinder or wonderful cuttings from Yarkiy? ... ..Zombie!

      • Yarkiya

        Hmm, bile tip.

  • Andrei

    Very beautiful effect.

I tried it with a meat grinder attachment - nothing worked.
I tried to take pictures through drushlak (there are holes of about the same diameter in it) - also nothing. I found a small ladle with holes on the farm (for taking tomatoes out of the jar) - to no avail. In the viewfinder I see a grating (structure of holes) - there is haze in the picture and that's it ... 35mm f / 1.8 vs aps-c. :-(

PS I went to put things in order in the kitchen - my wife will come and kill for the mess. :-)

    • anonym

Consult Yarkiy (I seriously). He seems to be doing great with 35mm f / 1.8.

  • Peter Sh.

I did not find the meat grinder. Shot through a grater, colander, a spatula for cutlets, in general, through all that with holes. I discovered a lot of new things.
For example, each lens has a specific hole diameter and geometrical arrangement that will produce optimal bokeh. I did not deduce the pattern - it was already late at night, my wife drove to sleep.

  • Alexander

The article about the filter from the meat grinder is simply divine! (Yes, I am in all seriousness and with an understanding of humor). Such articles open / expand the boundaries of creativity, give reason for reflection and push to create. Thanks for the article.

  • anonym

Excellent articles Arkady, I especially love with humor. And those who speak at some level remind me of Chekhov's "man in a case." Sorry for those.

  • anonym

Humor about politics is in another place ... ..Thank you for regretting it.

  • Andrei

    Shot at 35 / 1,8

  • Dezdecado

Gentlemen, comrades! I did everything as they said! There are no patterns. Why?
    Tell me.

    • The Hedgehog

The optics are desirable high-aperture, the focal length is desirable more, it is better to focus closer to the MDF, and so that the background is farther away ... this should enhance the effect.

    • anonym

But did you forget to dig out the meat from the holes?

  • Neofot

And who is looking at the bokeh besides the photographers? The answer is NOBODY. People, no one else needs this. I will say more: many are annoyed by the lack of sharpness in the background and what kind or subspecies this blur is not exactly what no one is looking at. This is not my opinion, this is a fact.

    • Yarkiya

It is very possible that nobody except the photographer really looks at the type and subspecies of bokeh, but at one time I just bought a DSLR to be able to shoot with blurring the background. It was the blurred background that attracted me not understanding then, and not the sharpness from the fence to dinner. And also, it is common for the human eye to see precisely with blur. So you are more accurate with the facts.

      • KalekseyG

        +1

      • Alexey

  • Peter Sh.

The “here I was” style of the soapbox is of course true photography. All the rest of the bokeh-shmoke of all sorts of clever people are mischief and harm.

“Ignorance is the night of the mind. The night is moonless and starless. " Cicero.

  • KalekseyG

You are not wrong, the true photo is se (e) lfi from an iPhone! the rest is for the crazy and feeble-minded :-). with such thoughts, you can even go so far as to the point that the best lens is a fisheye lens - there are more people getting in there with the owner. All I went to throw out the portrait photographers% -)

    • Yarkiya

Well, in general, then, too, hands itched over the self-makers to walk with a mockery, but at the last moment changed his mind, decided to spare the feelings of the “believers”, especially since there are those among Radozhiva's readers who bought a DSLR to bomb “cool - professional selfie”. ;)

  • Michael

I am delighted! Arkady Thank you! ... And, yes, they look at the bokeh, and they look at it as well, if it is interesting and appropriate

  • PhotoDro

I wanted to ask: about the thickness of the nozzle - should it be thinned by grinding it against the peeling, or is it an advantage on the contrary - like a “super-hood” protection against side flares? and who tried with a thin nozzle and the original, the difference is very big?
