Introducing the Multiply Blend Mode. Rice. 01

One of the most important innovations in the development of Photoshop was the introduction in version 3.0 of layers (1995). The new possibilities that arose at the same time, without exaggeration, radically changed the idea of \ uXNUMXb \ uXNUMXbthe possibilities of image editing. I will try to demonstrate some of them in a series of simple publications using examples.
Along with layers, there were also modes for their blending. This term is called the algorithm for the interaction of this layer with the underlying ones.Today there are 27 of them.
There are many publications on this topic on the Internet, most often they write about contrasting blending modes (Overlay and Soft Light). We're going to talk about the Multiply dimming mode today. Using an example taken from Lee Varis's book “Skin”, I will show you how to use it to realistically tattoo the body.
For work we need: a photo of a girl (Fig. 02):

And a tattoo template from the catalog (fig. 03):

The template is sized to match the body (size and perspective) using Edit -> Free Transform. The outermost part of the dragon's wing is highlighted with a red circle. It had to be slightly curved with the Liquify tool so that the drawing matched the geometry of the girl's shoulder.
Whether the tattoo template is on a transparent background, applying it would be a trivial task. But templates in catalogs are usually on a white background. We will overlay using the blending modes, but instead of the usual contrast modes (Overlay, Soft light), we will use the Multiply mode. for this mode, white (the background of the tattoo template) is neutral and we won't need to clip the dragon. Well, reptiles don't like this ...

In the middle “tattoo” layer is the tattoo template, scaled and deformed as described above. The blending mode of this layer is Multiply, the opacity, which we select visually - 82% To make the blending look more natural, a slightly blurred "noise" texture is superimposed on it. The way of adding noise is somewhat unusual: it is not superimposed on the image itself, but placed in a layer mask, initially filled with white:

Having become a mask in the Layers palette, we can adjust the intensity of this noise by moving the Density slider in the Properties palette:

If the tattoo superimposed in this way seems too faint for you, overlay a copy of it on top in Blending Mode Darken, snapping this layer to the one below:

Bottom line: Using the Multiply blend mode, for which white is neutral, avoided the rather time-consuming procedure of etching the dragon to separate it from the white background.

I'm not against past articles on Photoshop, but this particular article upset me. Why get a tattoo if it wasn't there initially? The very idea where everything is shifted to post-processing is flawed! If you need a girl with a tattoo, then find a master who will make her highly artistic, but temporarily, and shoot. A tattoo applied in a shop looks cheap. They shoot immediately, put on lighting that conveys the idea of a frame or video, make style, make-up, bow, and then they are a bit righteous at the post. Well, this article takes away from pure photography in the area of "artistic photo processing", as if when the bushes add, or overlay snow, rain and a starry sky. But to do this top-notch, you must at least have a taste and draw well.
