Announcement: Samyang Remaster Slim with AF modules 21/3.5, 28/3.5, 32/2.8

On August 22, 2024, the Samyang Remaster Slim modular system was introduced.

Remaster Slim

From the press release:

The world's first ultra-thin modular autofocus system with interchangeable optics, which allows you to replace only the optical elements (optical system) inside the “lens”, instead of replacing the entire lens.

This innovative technology allows you to replace only the optical elements (optical system) inside the lens, instead of replacing the entire camera lens. This technology allows lenses with different optical characteristics to be used in a single lens body, greatly increasing photo and video shooting flexibility and effectively saving space. The magnetically locking bayonet mount is easy to replace and can be quickly changed depending on the situation. The 21mm, 28mm and 32mm optical systems are inspired by the legendary P&S film cameras of the past. These lenses have been revived with designs optimized for digital sensors while maintaining their unique characteristics.

The Remaster Slim is smaller and lighter than previous models, while adding more features to make it even more powerful. This model offers enhanced portability and a variety of shooting features users require, delivering outstanding performance in any shooting environment. Despite its small size of less than 2 cm and weight of less than 80 grams, it features a custom AF/MF switch for increased versatility. Additionally, MF mode shortens the minimum focusing distance, allowing you to capture subjects more dynamically and realistically. This small and cute lens will turn any E-mount mirrorless camera into a portable compact camera.

The lens is a Swiss Army knife.
I will develop a faster option... in the form of a drum from a revolver, where to change the lens you will need to turn the drum until the next click. It will be larger and heavier in size, but the lens will be changed in 0,2 seconds.
Until a lens appears in which it will be possible to change the DF using a stepless mechanism. Although.. it seems there already is.

But essentially, it’s an interesting idea.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      The drum was already there

Which cameras have a drum with interchangeable lenses? I'm not particularly keen on cameras. By shooting turrets on amateur film cameras using 8mm film.

        • Tserg

There was a turret on the Ekran 3 movie camera. Three lenses. There is only one lens, and the other two are simply wide-cut and long-focus attachments. With a wide-cut nozzle, they broke the nasty monocle.
And there is no information available about this type of camera.

          • Andy From Far Away

I don’t know this from the field of photography. But at work, for the Institute of Physics, I made something similar in the form of a rotating disk with different filters, for use on optical tables or in spectrometers.

There were small-scale and piece products. For example, Haber & Fink made about 1949 turrets for three lenses for Leica in 200. In the 1960s there was an OROLF turret, also for Leica, in approximately the same edition. Etc.

Here's a blast from the past for a movie camera.

    • Tserg

Thanks to everyone for your support. This is how it died: as it was in cameras, then there were either serial or single germs. Turret lens changes are more typical for film cameras and television cameras. It is important to see a DSLR with a turret and wide-angle, standard and telephoto lenses))
And from the father who came up with Sam'yang, with interchangeable modules, it is great and with small camera sizes it can be effective so as not to carry a lens cap in the case.

  • Alexey

I don’t know how popular this will be, but the idea is very interesting!

  • Sergei

For fans of interchangeable optics and compact design, this is a very promising idea.
But focal lengths of 32mm and 28mm are already implemented in most standard zooms.
It is more interesting and promising to develop this concept towards a wide angle.
    21mm is already good.
Optical blocks of 18mm and 15mm are suggested.

    • Andy From Far Away

15mm will be difficult to implement at this size. At best it will be f/5.6 with strong vignetting.
