> Maximum magnification ratio: 1:2
It would not be superfluous to add that this is in the entire zoom range. This is the first 70-200 with this feature. And in general, there are few telephoto cameras with a good shooting scale, I only remember the Nikon Zoom-Micro Nikkor 70-180 / 4.5-5.6D with the ability to give out 180: 1x at 1,3mm (and 1: 3,2x at 70mm).
On the other hand, the popular Tamrons 70-180 / 2,8 and 50-400 / 4,5-6,3 can produce 1: 2x on the SHU, the Sigma S 60-600 F / 4.5-6.3 DN OS max. the scale is 1:2,4x by 200mm, and a bunch of other modern televisions have something around 1:3..4x. The exception to the rule was the first version of the 70-200/4 G with its 1:7.5 - this has now been fixed.
Tamron 50-400mm also 1:2 at 50mm.
But in general, this 70-200 is very interesting
Reviews from lenstip.com and cameralabs.com claim that using the 2x TC provides 1:1 macro over the entire zoom range. Quotes:
lenstip.com
“Sony has an excellent minimum focusing distance that achieves a reproduction ratio of 1:2 across the entire zoom range. Since this telephoto lens is compatible with a variety of teleconverters, you can also set it to TC 2.0x and get a 1:1 macro ratio across the entire range.”
cameralabs.com
“The new lens… delivers an impressive 0,5x zoom, not to mention compatibility with teleconverters missing from the Mark I – yes, giving you the ability to turn into a 400mm f8 or a 1:1 macro lens.”
I’ll also add that there is no news about the first version of the 70-200 / 4 G being discontinued - most likely it will remain on sale, and will be sold not for $1500, but for several hundred cheaper. The new price tag, logically, will be like that of Tamron 70-180 / 2,8, i.e. $1100..1200.
