  • Sergei

    These brave guys are 7Artisans!
Enter a segment long occupied by a very similar inexpensive Samyang 8mm/3,5 (200 USD new, 100 USD used).
There is one highlight - the angle of the image. The Korean, due to the Canon crop factor, has 167 °, while the Chinese have declared - as much as 205 °.
It is interesting to compare - do these 38 degrees at the edges of the frame give any gain?

  • Rodion

They have already run out of ideas (or stale optical circuits?) there, now they are following the rake of 10-15 years ago.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Considering the inscription 'CS' on the body, it is rather the same Samyang, although the scheme is different

  • Viktre

It has long been occupied not only by Samyang, but also by inexpensive (new) Chinese.

So the decision is strange, of course.

  • Oleg

let them make an inexpensive 35 / 1.4 for a mirror, nothing more is needed from them

    • Viktre

By and large, neither 7.5 / 3.5 nor 35 1.4 are needed from them - there are samyangs here and there, and cheaply.

We would continue to develop the BZK line, but autofocus would be added where it would come in handy.

      • Rodion

There are even more claims to the design of the Samyangs than to the design of the Artizans and other Chinese. For example, the intermediate rings between the lenses in samyang lenses are made of plastic. Helicoid guides, which break very often, are made of plastic. The thread for the filters is made of plastic. The number of problem copies is significant: often misalignment is already underway from the factory, especially for cheap models like 7 / 14 or 2.8 / 8. But even expensive 3.5/24 suffer from this.
So a reissue of, for example, samyang 35 1.4 in a fully metal version would not hurt. I don’t know about fisheyes - this is more a toy than a lens. Only a few can truly use such a lens with success.

        • Victor

Rodion, with all due respect, but claims (for example) to plastic threads look rather far-fetched. A lot of lenses (branded, canon-nikon, including not the most budget ones) have a similar thing and for some reason do not break when used properly.

Regarding misalignment xs, I didn’t conduct statistics, but (for example) in my 16mm everything is fine both in terms of optics (what is the Chinese width sharp across the entire field with f / 2.8?) And in terms of work (perhaps guides or rings between lenses and from plastic, but everything works and does not cough).

          • Rodion

They are not contrived. On Avito you can find countless samyangs with broken carvings. The metal one would bend and be subject to restoration, while the plastic one cannot be restored. The helicoid guides break, there are consistently several ads on Avito, for example, 35 1.4 with a broken focusing mechanism - lenses with such a mass cannot withstand even mild blows if they have guides made of such a fragile material as plastic. Lens rings made of plastic have a huge CTE in comparison with aluminum CTE, which leads to thermal detuning of lenses, to the appearance of stresses in the cold. And low-quality plastic under the influence of temperatures above 60 degrees generally floats under load. In a word, samyangi, if you are lucky with the assembly, the norm is an option, but only before the first blow.

            • Victor

xs, I don’t hammer nails with lenses :)

              • Rodion

I have had many cases of accidental bumps while using lenses that these Samyangs would not have survived 100%)

            • Vlad

Rodion, you write very interestingly about the design features and quality of lenses from various manufacturers. I think many would be interested in reading a detailed article on this topic.

              • Rodion

To write an article, it’s still better for me to have a set of more reliable and personally verified information. For example, as it was in the study of the thermal stability of the Samyang 500 / 6.3 lens.

        • Victor

If they make a complete analogue of 35 1.4 in metal - yes, why not, but only, IMHO, they won’t do it.

          • Arkady Shapoval

there is an autofocus yong in metal - Yongnuo 35mm 1: 1.4 and Yongnuo 35mm 1: 1.4C DF UWM

            • Rodion

I don’t know about these lenses, but inexpensive yongs 35/2 and 50 1.8 have plastic lens body parts. There is also such a very interesting assembly of two halves, which are still unknown how they are centered relative to each other. However, this is not God knows what sharp lenses, there may be not very noticeable sins on the open.

            • Victor

An interesting alternative to native 35s, yes.

  • Oleg

    I meant 35 / 1.4 for crop

  • Alexander Rifeev

viewing angle 205 gr. ... how can this be if the full flat angle = 180 degrees, and there is also a hood on the lens, albeit not deep, but limiting the viewing angle

    • Viktre

Diagonally, of course. You will understand this if you pick up a similar fisheye and look at its convex front lens from the side.

    • Sergei

Maybe the hood is removed there, and 205 degrees are achieved in the circular fisheye mode only on a full frame camera.

      • Viktre

205 degrees are achievable there along the diagonal of the frame and on a conventional crop camera. The lens hood does not need to be removed (if it suddenly comes off)

        • Sergei

It's odd then that 7Artisans didn't follow the path of Samyang and provide a circular fisheye mode on Canon's full-frame cameras.
The Koreans on the second model (CS II) of their 8mm / 3,5 made a removable hood for this.

          • Viktre

It's hard to guess from the photo, but the hood may well be removable.

    • Rodion

I have another question more. Now, if the angle and FR are linearly related, then why, if the angle for 8mm is 180 ° on a crop of 1.5, then for 7.5 mm the angle suddenly became 205 °?
      After all, 8 / 7.5 * 180 ° \u192d 205 °, and not XNUMX?

      • Sergei

There may be variations of different projection methods from different manufacturers.
        I advise you to look.
        http://michel.thoby.free.fr/Fisheye_history_short/Projections/Various_lens_projection.html

      • Arkady Shapoval

non-linear for fishies, the classical formula does not work, there is a different type of projection

      • i is glorious

Different fisheye have different projections: some are closer to stereographic (the same Samyang 8 / 3,5), some are more hypertrophied (Nikkor has 10,5).

        • Rodion

Got it, thanks for the replies

    • Arkady Shapoval

the angle is always diagonal for lenses, 200 degrees is not a problem

  • I want to buy it

    Has anyone tested it?
I want to buy it and play around with this focal point.
