Review of 7Artisans 1: 1.8 / 50mm HD.MC (mounts E, X, EF-M, M4/3)

The lens in this review was provided by 7Artisans. It can be easily found from the official dealer of 7Artisans on Aliexpress.

7Artisans 1: 1.8 / 50mm HD.MC

7Artisans 1:1.8/50mm HD.MC (second subversion, 10 petals)

In short

Please note that the 7artisans 1:1.8/50mm HD.MC lens is available with different mounts. This review shows the version of 7artisans 1:1.8/50mm HD.MC for mirrorless cameras Sony E with APS-C sensor. At the same time, 7artisans 50mm 1:0.95 is also available with mounts Canon EF-MFujifilm x и Micro 4 / 3. Important: for Nikon Z [DX, APS-C], Canon RF [RF-S, APS-C], Leica l [APS-C] no modifications.

There are two sub-versions of this lens, which are outwardly very difficult to distinguish from each other, the sub-versions are built on different optical schemes ('planar-like' 6/5 [view] and 'sonar-like' 6/5 [view]) and use a different number of aperture blades (10 or 12). The review shows a version with a 6/5 'planar' optical design and 10 aperture blades. It is easy to distinguish from the version with the old optical design and 12 aperture blades by a significantly larger rear lens and different markings on the focus distance scale.

In the review, I will call 7artisans 1: 1.8 / 50mm HD.MC abbreviated - 7Artisans 50 / 1.8.

7Artisans 50 / 1.8 is a classic modern fast fifty-fifty lens with manual focus and manual iris control for cropped mirrorless cameras of popular systems. Highly low price. Sharp in the center of the frame already at F / 1.8, compact, lightweight.

7Artisans 50 / 1.8 is the younger brother of a more expensive and fast aperture 7Artisans 55 / 1.4 (first и second versions). Does its job well, but inexpensive and autofocus YONGNUO 50/1.8S DA DSM (available only for Sony E with APS-C sensor) would be a much better solution.

Main advantages

  1. low price, which is located at the level of 60-70 dollars (eg original Sony 50/1.8E is about 250-350 dollars)
  2. there are modifications for some modern popular mounts / systems: Sony E, Fujifilm xCanon EF-M и Micro 4 / 3
  3. low weight, which is only about 170 grams (weight slightly depends on the mount used)
  4. compact sizes
  5. standard filter size 52 mm (metal thread for the filter)
  6. a classic combination of focal length and aperture. Class 50/1.8 lenses are very common and very popular. On cropped mirrorless cameras, this focal length is well suited for portrait and creative shooting.
  7. 6/5 optical design optimized for mirrorless cameras, akin to old Zeiss Planar lenses, with 'neutral', 'unobtrusive' bokeh
  8. good build quality: lens body completely made of metal, front cap with latches, bayonet painted black
  9. very smooth focus ring, pleasant to use
  10. during focusing, the filter thread does not rotate
  11. aperture ring rotates smoothly, without clicks and fixed values (useful for video shooting)
  12. there is a depth of field scale and focusing distances in meters and feet
  13. multicoated optics, HD.MC (High Definition Multi Coating) coating
  14. ten aperture blades, which always give a rounded aperture (view)
  15. the lens has practically no similar modern competitors (I know only a similar PERGEAR 50 / 1.8, modern, manual, for mirrorless cameras with APS-C sensor)
  16. in the center of the frame at F / 1.8, the lens has a high resolution
  17. small distortion
  18. pronounced star effect with 10 rays on heavily covered apertures

The main disadvantages

  1. there are two sub-versions of this lens, which is confusing. The differences lie in the use of different optical schemes 6/5 (reminiscent of some old Zeiss Sonnar) and 6/5 (reminiscent of some old classic Zeiss Planar). The versions also differ in the number of aperture blades: 12 for the older and 10 newer, as well as the size of the rear lens. The newer sub-version has a significantly larger rear lens, and the focusing distance scale has slightly different markings.
  2. in the name of the lens, which is indicated near the front lens, a small 'a' is written in the name '7artisans', all other lenses from 7Artisans use capital letter 'A' in the name
  3. the aperture control ring can be accidentally hooked and easily knock down the set value
  4. focus ring rotates only 90 degrees
  5. no lens version for popular mounts Nikon ZCanon RF/RF-SLeica l. This is most likely due to the fact that 7Artisans 50 / 1.8 is one of the oldest lenses from 7Artisans, which was introduced back in 2017, then there were no mirrorless camera systems Canon RF/RF-S и Nikon Z (and here Leica BILLION with Leica L mount available since 2014)
  6. no microprocessor contacts to form the correct EXIF and automatic aperture control (for example, some 'manual' Chinese lenses from laowa)
  7. no support for auto focus (for example, an inexpensive similar Chinese lens has YONGNUO 50/1.8S DA DSM)
  8. during focusing, the entire lens block moves, the lens trunk moves forward (but does not rotate), there is no focus optimization based on floating elements to achieve good optical performance at any focusing distance
  9. a threaded (not bayonet) hood must be used, there is no hood in the delivery set (the hood is, for example, in the delivery set of a similar PERGEAR 50 / 1.8)
  10. a very old optical design is used, for example, similar YONGNUO 50/1.8S DA DSM uses a much more complex modern optical design with 1 low dispersion element
  11. small non-linear step at the aperture control ring between F / 5.6-F / 16, no mark for F / 11
  12. the focus ring has a small 'overrun of infinity', which does not allow you to quickly and easily, in one movement, focus 'to infinity'
  13. there is no lens profile for popular RAW converters, which does not allow you to easily and easily correct some optical lens flaws, such as distortion and vignetting (you can create a profile yourself)
  14. The software of modern cameras does not have the data to automatically correct some of the optical imperfections of the lens, such as distortion and vignetting, for example.
  15. the minimum focusing distance (MFD) is 50 centimeters, which is the usual value, allowing you to get a maximum magnification ratio of around 1:8. For example, such PERGEAR 50 / 1.8 MDF is only 38 centimeters, which allows better use of the lens for pseudo-macro photography
  16. low resolution in the corners of the image in the range of F / 1.8-F / 2.8
  17. noticeable vignetting at f / 1.8 (completely disappears at f / 4, view at f / 1.8)
  18. on contrasting elements of the frame are strongly manifested chromatic aberration
  19. strong glare / ghosting possible in strong back and side light
  20. noticeable effect of Focus Breathing, the viewing angle decreases during focusing towards the MDF
  21. at about the same price you can find a similar, but already full-frame TTArtisan 50 / 2 [Available for Z, X, E, L, RF/RF-S, EF-M and M4/3 mounts]
  22. old and cheap full frame Jupiter-8 50/2, made according to the classical scheme 'Sonar', gives more 'artistic / interesting' picture and easily adapts to any modern mirrorless system

Absolutely all lenses from 7Artisans can see the list on Radozhiv here. The 7Artisans 50/1.8 lens is easy to find from the official dealer of 7Artisans on Aliexpress.

2022 is the year the Chinese have outdone themselves:
    1. Under the guise of a full-frame lens of one brand, a lens of another brand with fake characteristics is sold in a new wrapper on the official website (ttArtisan 50/2 and 7artisans 50/1.8 APS-C (I) E);

    2. On the sly, they re-released their 7artisans 50 / 1.8 APS-C. In order not to get burned - with a different scheme. But nothing is written about this on the site - everything is the same as before. The new lens, judging by the above photos, turned out to be even worse than the old one in every sense. If the old version within APS-C was very good and sharp across the field, then the new one manages to bring down the edges. The old version had bokeh quite sane for a modern lens, and the new one ... Well, what are these loose, muddy circles of an incomprehensible shape with some kind of chromatic color? Well, some conditional ancient Tevidon 50 / 1.8 or even RO3-3M 50/2 against the background of this miracle looks like a fairy tale both in quality and in design. Especially in drawing.

    3. They re-released the old 7artisans lenses under the Pergear brands, the old Andoer lenses under the Pergear brand again. What's happening?

All they have to do now is declare that they are making “professional lenses” (c) and raise prices by an order of magnitude in order to experience the zen of KMZ.

On the the official website they left two appearances at the same time, the old one (marking 16ft, 6m) and the new one (marking 15ft, 5m).
Anything DJ-OPTICAL and HD.MC or DH.MC is produced in the same factory but for different brands. Rather, it’s not the brand that bought it from the brand, re-released it, but simply the same thing is produced at the factory in different bottles.

The Chinese also released the wonderful Viltrox AF 13 / 1.4 and the amazing Viltrox AF 75 / 1.2, this is not my opinion, but the opinion of literally all reviewers on the internet. They also released a wonderful Laowa 90mm F2.8 APO 2x Macro and a very good Laowa 25/0.95. They also released some quality fast cine lenses, judging by the reviews available.

Oh, what wonderful things the Chinese have! Just do not forget that among the reviewers, the majority receive no less wonderful bribes from the Chinese and are remarkably objective.

Laowa 24/13 made a revolution in film and video shooting

good old 50mm f1,8 lenses on nikon & canon were the best buy in the world for $100. Then autofocus fifty dollars for the same systems was released by yongnuo, they are even cheaper. If you want something like a lamp and manual, then you can find a non-autofocus adapter with nikon f for any bzk, and 50mm1,8d is beautiful as before.

I saw a review on this lens and on its first version in one blog. In the same place, the author separately wrote that on an older version he found a problem with inaccurately installed lenses, which caused soft and distortion in the blur zone, as well as some interesting way in which you can align the lenses. I wanted to ask if it was worth taking it to replace Helios from Jupiter 8, but the ending, in principle, made it clear that if there is still a plus in front of Helios due to its compactness, then it is not possible to compete with Jupiter). I beg you not to kick for retrograde, but the purpose of these glasses is purely amateur, and if the Chinese get smart fishies up to 35mm and there is a reason for buying them, then buying a fifty-kopeck piece makes no sense at all. We expect from the Chinese people's 85s up to 200 bucks))
