Fall 2022. Leaving Nikon F

Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro + Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4D

I haven’t shot commercials on a mirror system for a very long time Nikon f. But I still had several Nikon F-mount cameras and several lenses for these cameras. For example, I often used Nikon D40 for some photo tasks as a certain photo-manifesto. recently my Nikon D40 (already the sixth in a row) died at 250.000 frames (see my post about Nikon Nikkor 105mm 1: 1.8 and Nikon D40). As a result, I sold all the other cameras and lenses based on Nikon F. The last lens for Nikon F was Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm 1: 1.4Gsold this fall.

The main reason for the complete 'leaving' from Nikon F was war in Ukraine. The main reason for the 'global' transition specifically to mirrorless cameras remains more comfortable operation of the focusing system for some photo tasks. It so happened historically that sony a7 III и Sony a3500 solve all assigned tasks.

But in the fall of 2022, two more cameras of the Nikon F system accidentally fell on my arm: Fujifilm FinePix S3 Pro и Nikon D3000. By the way Nikon D3000 - the last camera of the Nikon F system with a CCD sensor. Lens used Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm 1: 1.4Dthat the store gave me profotosale.com.ua. Some autumn photos of this bunch can be seen below:

Arkady, did you eventually sell Protroika, or did you decide to leave it for now?
PS> The “warm” photos are excellent, however, as always.

  • Rodion

    What a gorgeous cat...

    • B. R. P.

      Yes. Harsh, but beautiful.

I bought a D3000 for a friend a year ago new in a box. Very pleased with the result. I started shooting from digital SLRs about 10 years ago on the D90. Now I have D5300, D300, D500 for sports. In 2014 I bought a new Df. They are all good, each in their own way. After reading the review of Arkady, I bought a D70 C 18-70, which got up on the D300. The D3000 and D70 really do produce beautiful colors with little effort. Good luck to all!

“A few autumn photos on this bunch can be seen below:” I read - on this fairy tale)))

I've been using Canon since the launch of the Canon EOS 350D. But after the war I will switch to Sony.
My current 5D Mark III is already failing sometimes (age), and it makes no sense to switch to RF due to Canon's redneck policy. They do not allow third parties to use the RF mount. But Sony did the opposite, and now on the Sony E mount, the largest fleet of optics. Yes, and their mirrorless cameras weigh noticeably less, which is very important on a hike.

    • Dmitry V.G.

They forbade riveting * autofocus * lenses, and this is essentially true: otherwise, Chinese gloomy geniuses rivet inexpensive, but not very high-quality glasses and kill the market for Canon itself. First, the Japanese will “close” all the main FRs with their optics, and only then will they launch competitors.

However, no one bothers you at all to use glasses from EF on RF through an adapter (you can even take some very budgetary one from the same Chinese, like Meike or Viltrox). With full autofocus support and other goodies.

Great photos. Once again I was convinced of the correctness of my choice of Fuji cameras of the S2 Pro and S3 Pro series. In my opinion, these cameras give an unsurpassed result in color reproduction, mainly due to the CCD sensor. I have been using these models of cameras with pleasure for many years, periodically bribing them as they wear out. The Fuji S2 Pro is especially good with its indescribable film romance. And in general, the saying “BETTER IS THE ENEMY OF GOOD” is true. I propose to leave everything as it was: Fuji S3 Pro + Nikon 35-70 F2.8D. You can also Nikon 20-35 F2.8D and that's it (just kidding). Further development of photographic equipment is just marketing.

    • Ledogor

I also liked the photos from Fujikov. Already wanted to buy. Will have to look for options.

  • Alexander Rifeev

why part with NIKON or with CANON? :-) CANON is the best when capturing faces, it's not in vain that it is used to capture VIPs :-) CANON is very good when shooting interiors ... and NIKON is the best when shooting wide shots in nature, NIKON produces good shades of white - for example, photos of clouds: -)

    • Dmitry Kostin

“it’s not in vain that it is used to capture VIPs”
This is true by the way. Photographers of the Russian Foreign Ministry are sitting tight on Canon - either Ones or 4th Pyataks. There was no BZK yet. If the visit is semi-official and there is no Lavrov's presence in the frame, then sometimes Sonya's BZK was used. This was the case until 2022.
Lenses for Canon - traditionally were the newest Lki.

      • Arkady Shapoval

VIPs is a very narrow area of photography, photojournalism, documentary. Yes and like horses are rented for everything.

        • Gregor_S

  • Jea reth

I left the Nikon F system in 2017, I guess. I sold the D200 and D5100, the remaining lenses at that time. To be honest, this system has finished me off. And I sincerely do not understand how people can use the photosystem, where, whatever you connect with each other, always something in the resulting bundle does not work. Before you buy something new for your system, you must find out if you need a screwdriver, what kind of protrusion you have for the aperture ring leash, whether the exposure metering works without electronics, count the contacts in the bayonet, understand the D or not D lens you want to suggest if this generation of stabilizers works on your camera, and a whole ton of information just because “We have kept the bayonet unchanged since 1959 and you can attach any lens to your camera ... Only we always made various vegetable gardens around the bayonet, so here's a list of what you can't work with! Enjoy!”

I left for Canon due to the fact that everything in the system (minus A-TTL flashes) always works that can, in principle, be connected to each other. I hung lenses with stepping and ultrasonic autofocus motors and stabilizers on my Canon EOS 650 from 89, which I didn’t even hear about in 89. So what? And everything works, oddly enough! And this applies not only to the lens and camera.

Somehow after that, you start to look at the Nikon F system except with compassion.

Tell me, users of this system, what did I not find in this system that keeps you on it?

    • Dmitry Kostin

“Tell me, users of this system, what did I not find in this system that keeps you on it?”
Almost complete absence of focusing errors (including back / front) on non-native and native screwdriver lenses. On Canon, I already suffered a little with Sigmas (there was a ruler with HSM motors before ART) and Tokins.
Yes, I agree that it is very nice when you can attach something from L IS lenses to a film EOS 3 or EOS 50E, the main thing is that any native one should be from the 90s and newer. By the way, speaking of compatibility, I was somehow uncertain and for a very long time focused on the film 3 pancake EF 40mm f / 2.8 STM, which is why I haven’t decided to buy it yet, but I really want to. Different Sigma fifty dollars focused faster than him, but they had other questions that led to a familiar Sigma master in Onlinetrade.

Arkady has fundamental, detailed articles on this topic. Very interesting read, highly recommended.

        • Dmitry Kostin

This article is nothing particularly new to me. I'm not trying to defend any system, I don't care for a long time. There are features and you either accept them (if they do not interfere), or not, and then you change the system.

    • B. R. P.

Thickened paint) Prahfesionaly do not agree with you)

    • Nicholas

I do not know, as for me, nothing complicated. You don’t need to buy the cheapest carcasses of 3xxx and 5xxx series, and don’t fence glasses that are 20-30-40 years old. As for me, Nikon as a system is more versatile. So I switched from crop d7000 to d750 at one time, and there was an average tamron 17-50 2.8 with a stub. Of course, he didn’t have enough stars from the sky, but I also bought it under the video for the crop. Later, the video was almost completely abandoned with rare exceptions. And I easily hooked this tamron on the d750 to shoot 2-3 matinees in kindergartens a year (it’s clear that in crop mode, but who cares, FullHD is the same). You can’t put a glass on FF on Kenon crop. Or there was still 10.5mm fisheye left, also from a cropped carcass. Fisheye used to be popular, now not so much for me. But nevertheless, I can put it on my d800 and take 100 photos a year in crop mode. In crop mode, but 16mp is enough. The electronic diaphragm drive was supported from the d300 (did not work on the d80) and then all my carcasses (d300 d7000 d750 d800) supported this. It is sad that in the future, with the transition to the UPC, some of my glasses will not be relevant due to the lack of AF due to the same screwdriver. But I have only 2 glasses of this kind, the price of which is on the secondary in the amount of 20 UAH. from strength. Or it was once 000 135, if I’m not mistaken Hanimex or something like that was called, under Nikon F, bearded 2.8xx I bought it, played around and sold it, but if I didn’t sell it, I could wind Nikon on the BZK in the future and everything would be connected without additional crutches (not counting the FTZ adapter), but it seems impossible to take glass from Kenon in the 70s and wind it onto the UPC Kenon today using only one adapter. In general, NIKON one love))) Peace and goodness to all

      • Viktre

        In general, there are nuances.

        1. Tamron from the Canon crop you would still put on a full-frame Canon camera.

        2. What are the problems with taking a cheap fd-rf adapter and winding a Canon lens from the 70s onto a modern mirrorless camera?

        3. The electronic diaphragm drive was supported, but the modern stepper motor is no longer.

        • Nicholas

Yes, how many of these AF-P glasses are there for Nikon f ... 18-55 yes 70-300, and then both for crop ... I don’t remember anymore :) In any case, the new Z mount solves all the “jambs” of the F mount and I hope the system as a whole is waiting for light future )))

          • Arkady Shapoval

            Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 10-20mm 1: 4.5-5.6G VR
            Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G
            Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1: 3.5-5.6G VR
            Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-6.3G ED
            Nikon DX AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-6.3G ED VR
            Nikon AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm 1: 4.5-5.6E VR ED

Nikon Z solves almost nothing, but only adds headaches when trying to keep the fleet of F-lenses

            • Nicholas

Well, 4 lenses (except for variations with and without a stub as separate models). Three of them on the crop. There is absolutely no reason to “mourn” or say that the Nikon system is bad only because these 7000 glasses cannot be installed on the conditional d12, which is 200 years old and costs $ 4 on the secondary.
Naturally, I meant that Z solves all the “confusion” without regard to the F mount. And in 20 years, no one will seriously take optics for F baynet, let alone a screwdriver. I speak more for those people who will earn money with photography, and not about individual “enthusiasts” who will be happy to use retro :)

              • B. R. P.

Just millions of enthusiasts, and earning money and even more professionals - a minority.

              • Arkady Shapoval

I wonder which BZK system then does not solve this problem

              • Nicholas

For some reason, I can’t “answer” the last 2 posts from Arkady and B.R.P.

It may depend on the environment in which you communicate, but in my environment there is only 1 enthusiast who occasionally picks up his D7200 to take pictures of his family and does not earn money with photography, and a lot of people I know who make money with photography, with varying degrees of success of course.

Perhaps only “dead” mounts like Nikon1 do not solve modern problems :))) By the way, a couple of years ago I bought myself a nikon100 v1 with 1mm f10 / 2 for $ 8, so to speak, play around, for such money a cool toy. Shoot friends there at barbecues, or cut down a time-lapse, even bought an adapter on Ali on m39 for my Jupiter3. It's all pampering, but sometimes you just want to take a break from work :)

      • Human

        >> You can’t put a glass on FF on Kenon crop

put it on, calmly shot on the RP with a 55-250 EFS lens (having slightly modernized the adapter so that it does not rest against the protruding rear lens)

      • Jea reth

You say that the system is more versatile, but at the same time you say that you do not need to buy any cameras and lenses. So they are also systemic! Where is the versatility then?
Even your description of system ownership begins with reservations about what not to do)
As for me, a system solution is when it is possible to assemble a working tool from the components of the system, which, in principle, are conceived with the ability to connect with each other. And here, whatever one may say, but the con is still in flight, because the real complete systemicity begins only with older cameras. And at canon, I don’t really care what to take off the shelf - EOS 3, EOS 5D, EOS RP or the old man 550D. Everything, absolutely all the elements of the system I have will work equally well everywhere. I never had this with Nikon, and I didn’t even have FF cameras!

        • Nicholas

I imagine what kind of discussions Kenon users of the late 80s could create when the company switched to the EF mount. How much then it would be possible to breed holivars on the Internet, if it were available to the masses as it is today))) What kind of universality then (in those days) could we talk about. And 30 years later, of course, it is easy to say that Kenon is universal. Then, it seems to me, to the layman, Nikon seemed much more loyal to the user. And Nikon as a whole got out with little blood for a long time and successfully. The same state employee d50 had a screwdriver. Well, then cunning marketers began to rule the ball and not engineers, one gets such an impression. Hence the reservation not to take the cheapest carcasses of the 3xxx and 5xxx series, if there is a desire to fully interact with the glasses of the film era (in most cases) Ay, Nikonists support me or something))) Good luck to everyone)

Does the stub also work fine on film cameras? Are there any differences from working on digital cameras?

I am wildly sorry, my dear, but you didn’t even have a Nikon F system, that’s what I’ll tell you, and judging this system from your bell tower is simply ridiculous, yes, but the system is D4s, Df, D750, F6 ,F4,F3,FA, and a few stacks-
      AF-S300\f4,
      AF-D 200\f4macro,
      AF-D 135\f2,
      AF-D 85\f1.8,
      AF-D 50\1.8,
      AF-D 24\2.8
      AF-D 20-35\2.8
      AI-S 28\2.8
      AI-S 50\1.8
This is the system, and this is not to mention the fact that at work ...
You know, I’ll probably stay with my old system, since everything works on everything, and yes, I agree with you all, there are no ideal systems, but considering that you actually didn’t really encounter it, and I encountered it in general a good experience compared to BOOTS, as noted here: color reproduction, autofocus, optics ... and again, FULL COMPATIBILITY !!!
By the way, my colleague in the studio has a CANON printer, but the system is also NIKON F, everything works, everything fits together, so either you have something with your hands, or even worse with your head if you are not able to find a system within your means and difficulties.
I wish you success in your studies and in the difficult photographic field!

Too many letters "I" and "b".

        • Ramzes

I would look at what you would write here if you had worked for twenty years in an emigrant publication, my dear

          • B. R. P.

The work in the publication did not add to your ability not to take the text literally, my dear. I strongly advise you not to get personal with strangers, even with all the Internet impunity. I will not write where I worked, I will leave this exclusive opportunity to brag to you. good luck.

  • Anatoly

And I'm flooding S3 pro, even though it's fate and fate. Switching to Panasonic, until 3/4, after you can buy from the S series

    • Yuriy Molchanov

Anatoly, what can you say about the difference in sharpness between 4/3 and full frame? Are there any subjective feelings? (I read the tests, there is a very small difference).

  • Alexander

Through trial and error, I use Olympus CCD DSLRs to get a “warm tube color”.

  • Lynx

I still wanted to go back to the “drink”. But the villain-fate decided differently, changed his D40 to a mirrorless one ...
However, something, but Nikon was always better at ergonomics and design than other digital cameras.
Sonic's "combines push the button where there is room" - still depressing.

  • Ramzes

Thank you for the useful article!
I thought about buying myself, but not S3, but S5, the one based on the D200, it will probably be more ceiling, and given the current prices, you can dig a new one in a box for 300ue on ebee (and don’t forget Kyiv 19 for this system)))
As for the author’s decision to jump off the Nikon F optical system, this is an unacceptable option for me, for example, and here’s why:
-F3T,FA,F4,F6,D750,Df,D4s /// Agree sufficient arsenal for any commercial and non-commercial purposes
-7 PFR glasses and a couple of zooms, fully compatible and working really, without any adapters and other canoes
    - quite acceptable workmanship, reliability, color reproduction, optics and, what is important, in my opinion quite adequate prices, a huge variety of optics on the secondary
-I don’t know what mid-vips are there, it’s all on another planet, but here, in the vicinity of Mjunkhin ... wherever you go, everyone sits tight on Nikon and no one is in a hurry to jump off the UPC, according to my observations, on the contrary, an acquaintance in the studio is still B850 bought (very praised, scoundrel))))
And now, considering all this, what can I tell you, my good handsome men?
sell off all your Nikon F stuff as soon as possible, and run and run to buy whatever suits you best, and Nikon F is a non-toy and relatively expensive system that professionals work in studios, editorial offices and on the road.
Once again, I thank the author for the wonderful photographs and painstaking work!

How could it be possible to change the Nikon D40 to some Sony A3500 ????
