Please note that the MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated lens is available with different mounts. This review shows the MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated version for mirrorless cameras Sony E with APS-C sensor. At the same time, MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated is also available with mounts Canon EF-MCanon RF-S, Nikon Z, Fujifilm x и Micro 4 / 3 (for some reason not for Leica l).

In this review, I will refer to MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated as Meike 35/0.95 for short.

because of martial law in Ukraine this review helped me prepare Anna Anuttara. Some exterior photos taken from Meike official website.

In short

Meike 35 / 0.95 - modern manual (manual focus only) particularly fast fixed focal length lens for mirrorless cameras with APS-C or Micro 4/3 sensor. The lens was announced in October 2022. First of all, Meike 35/0.95 is aimed at creative and everyday photo and video shooting. At F / 0.95, the lens is good in the center of the frame with minor reservations.

35 mm focal length for cameras with APS-C sensor is considered a standard focal length and is suitable for a huge number of photo tasks, usually such a focal length allows you to use the lens as a standard solution for almost every day. True, the most convenient regular fix for every day for cameras with an APS-C sensor is something from the category of 23-24-25 mm, by type felttrox 23/1.4AF, Carl Zeiss Sonnar E 1,8/24 ZA T*, or 7Artisans 25mm 1: 0.95.

Meike 35/0.95 interesting very low price (it's one of the cheapest f/0.95 lenses of its kind), good build quality, plenty of aperture blades, and a maximum aperture of 1:0.95. Separately, it should be noted that the relative aperture of 1: 0.95 is not entirely 'honest' and gives light transmission in the area T / 1.3-T / 1.4.

Among the shortcomings are the standard optical problems inherent in such inexpensive high-aperture optics, first of all - very low resolution in the corners and edges of the frame at close focusing distances, a very large amount of glare in the back and side light.

Aperture F / 0.95 five steps wider aperture F / 5.6, which is used in some 'dark' standard lenses. Each step gives a twofold increase in aperture ratio: 1 -> 1.4 -> 2 -> 2.8 -> 4 -> 5.6. In numerical terms, this means that Meike 35 / 0.95 should be 35 times lighterthan stock lens Sony 16-50mm f / 3.5-5.6 PZ OSS, which at 35 and 50 mm focal lengths uses a maximum aperture ratio of only 1:5.6. The calculation in the difference in relative aperture (count aperture ratio) is elementary: (5.6 * 5.6) / (0.95 * 0.95) \u35d XNUMX. Other things being equal, this allows you to shoot at ISO values or excerpts, which are 35 times smaller than those required when using a lens Sony 16-50mm f / 3.5-5.6 PZ OSS. For example, other things being equal, ISO 3200 can be used instead of ISO 100.

Most likely Meike 35/0.95 is not a copy 7Artisans 35mm 1: 0.95 or Brightin Star 1:0.95 F=35mm MC (for APS-C, 7Artisans FireFly series and their clones by type Risepray 35mm F / 0.95). Lenses have different optical schemes and many other basic technical characteristics.

The creative potential of such a lens is difficult to overestimate. It is suitable for a very wide range of photographic tasks. Amateur photographers often use it as a portrait lens, but still Meike 50 / 0.95 will be better. Many people just want a fast prime in addition to their 'whale' lens.

MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated (APS-C, Sony E)

Assembly

The lens came to the review completely new, in a sealed box. The box contains the lens itself with front and rear caps and a small instruction manual. The design of the box is stylish and beautiful.

In general, the lens very well assembled... Meike 35 / 0.95 has metal mount for bayonet, and the lens case itself is completely made of metal, anodized aluminum is used.

All marks and labels on lenses engraved.

The front lens cap is plastic, without latches, just fits snugly against the body frame. There is a special fabric seal on the inside of the lid. The cover is fixed tightly. Removing and installing the cover is pleasant.

The weight of the Meike 35 / 0.95 lens itself is almost 400 grams. In the hands of the lens feels like a solid thing.

The diameter of the filters is 52 mm. Meike 35/0.95 itself is small, well suited for small Sony cameras with an APS-C sensor.

The diaphragm consists of 13 (thirteen!) petals and forms a round hole at any value, while in the photographs in the blur zone, rather round disks of blur are obtained at any aperture value. The diaphragm can only be controlled manually using a special ring. Aperture ring rotates smoothly no clicks and fixed values, you can set any intermediate value in the range of F / 0.95-F / 16, which is very useful during movie shooting.

It's important: unlike other lenses, where the aperture ring rotates with clicks, and the transition between any pairs of aperture numbers has the same step, the step between pairs of Meike 35 / 0.95 numbers is always different. It shrinks from F/0.95 to F/16. This makes it difficult to conveniently and quickly set values from F / 1.4 to F / 16. And for the F / 5.6 and F / 11 marks, there was no place on the scale at all (dots are used instead of the numbers F / 5.6 and F / 11).

It's important: aperture control ring is located from the front of the lens, behind the focus ring. This arrangement of the aperture ring is quite convenient.

MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated (APS-C, Sony E)

MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated (APS-C, Sony E)

What is the actual aperture ratio (T-stop) at f / 0.95?

The light transmission of the lens is expressed 'T' steps. It is this value that is considered to be the 'real' indicator of lens aperture. Typically, T-stops (T-stops) are linked to aperture stops (F-stops). Quality lenses have pretty close numbers around 'T' and 'F'. The light transmission of Meike 35/0.95 at F/0.95 is in the region T / 1.3-1.4. Typically, this light transmission is characteristic of lenses with F / 1.2. I have already seen similar behavior with the lens 7Artisans 35mm 1: 0.95.

I came to these conclusions by comparing the readings exposure paired with other especially fast manual lenses for mirrorless cropped cameras: Meike 50 / 0.95 и 7Artisans 25 / 0.95 (lens type).

MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated (APS-C, Sony E)

MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated (APS-C, Sony E)

Focusing

The focus ring is quite wide, metal, ribbed with fine notches. The ring rotates approximately 90 degrees (about 1/4 of a full turn). The focus ring is poorly stretched in the range from 1 meter to infinity. Focusing is smooth and pleasant.

It's important: after successful focusing, when trying to set the desired aperture value, you can easily touch the focusing ring, which rotates very easily, and thereby knock down precise focusing.

During focusing, the trunk of the lens does not move forward and does not rotate. During focusing, the front lens moves, but in the middle of the lens barrel. We can talk about virtual internal focusing. Most likely, the lens does not have an image quality correction system at close focusing distances.

On the ring there is a scale with a focusing distance in meters and feet and a depth of field scale. The minimum focusing distance is 39 centimeters and the maximum magnification ratio is approximately 1:10.

Meike 35 / 0.95 has weak effect 'Focus Breathing' (changing the viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases slightly.

Focus Shift (shift focus, change in focusing distance due to aperture) is missing.

Hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) for fast and accurate infinity aiming under all operating temperatures no. The sample from the review has a small infinity flight in the extreme position of the focusing ring.

Focus peaking with the Sony NEX-F3 at f/0.95 works well even with the Peaking level set to low.

MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated (APS-C, Sony E)

Image quality

Meike 35/0.95 is generally good, although it has obvious serious problems. At F / 0.95, the lens produces good sharpness in the center of the frame.

Sharpness

  1. resolution slightly depends on the focusing distance, the lens is optimized for long and medium focusing distances, does not have a system of floating elements to avoid image quality changes at different focusing distances
  2. at F / 0.95 resolution in the center of the frame is high at medium and long focusing distances and 'below average' at close focusing distances
  3. after F / 2, excellent resolution is achieved in the center of the frame at any focusing distance
  4. there is a severe coma
  5. there is a very strong drop in resolution to the edges and corners of the image
  6. far corners of the frame return to normal only at f / 11

Distortion

  1. there is a noticeable barrel-shaped distortion
  2. easily fixable in the editor

Vignette

  1. a little vignetting at F / 0.95 (which was very, very surprised)
  2. vignetting decreases with focus towards MDF. Most noticeable when focusing on infinity
  3. vignetting almost completely disappears at values after F / 2
  4. vignetting easily fixable in the editor

Aberration

  1. tangible chromatic aberration all over the frame
  2. chromatic aberration decrease slightly after closing the aperture to F / 2.8
  3. the strongest chromatic aberration traceable at the corners and edges of the image
  4. strong milling

Rest

  1. on heavily covered apertures, it is easy to get the effect of the rays of a star, however, the star is weakly expressed
  2. from bright light sources you can get a lot of glare (example) it very serious problem this lens
  3. bokeh is pleasant in many cases, but is often ruined by the 'flattening' of the blur discs at the edges and corners of the image. Bokeh slightly curled

Important: at the time of writing this review, there was no Meike 35/0.95 profile for popular RAW converters. You can create a profile yourself or wait for its release.

Sample Photos

Photos for this review helped me prepare Anna Anuttara. All photos in the review are shown without processing. Sony NEX F3 camera (16 MP Sony Exmor APS-C HD CMOS sensor) was used.

Original images in JPEG ('.JPG') can view and / or download from this link (60+ photos, Google Drive cloud).

It's important: electronic front curtain shutter Sony NEX F3 badly spoiled bokeh at wide apertures and shutter speeds shorter than 1/1000 second, the causes of this problem are described here. The lens is not to blame, a purely feature of the Sony NEX F3 electronic front curtain shutter. With a fully mechanical shutter, this problem can be avoided (the Sony NEX F3 can also use a fully mechanical shutter).

My experience

According to my observation, Meike 35 / 0.95 is significantly better in the center of the frame at F / 0.95 of its main competitor - 7Artisans 35mm 1: 0.95 (for APS-C, 7Artisans FireFly series) and all its clones by type Brightin star 1:0.95 F=35mm MC, Risepray 35 / 0.95, Kaxinda 35/0.95, Yaxall 35/0.95, etc.

Alternatives for EF-M, Z, E, X, M4 / 3:

Now (early 2024) there are only a few similar solutions on the market (35/0,95 class lenses for mirrorless cameras with an APS-C sensor):

In general, for photography I would recommend an inexpensive autofocus lens for cropped mirrorless cameras - Viltrox 33 / 1.4 AF (available for popular mounts: Canon EF-Mfujifilm xNikon Z и Sony E). Sometimes Viltrox 33 / 1.4 AF can be found on sale for about $250, which is not much more expensive than Brightin Star 35/0.95.

Results

Meike 35/0.95 is a very interesting creative tool. Moderate price, while the lens is good / very good already at F / 0.95 in the center of the frame. True, light transmission is not quite characteristic of the F / 0.95 aperture and is at the level of T / 1.3-1.4. Separately, it is worth noting that Meike 35 / 0.95 is very afraid of flare.

10 main advantages

  1. low price. For 2022, this is one of the cheapest lenses for APS-C with f / 0.95
  2. convenient focal length for use on a camera with an APS-C sensor
  3. high aperture (relative aperture 1:0.95 with real aperture within T/1.3-T/1.4)
  4. good build quality: the lens body is completely made of metal
  5. there is a depth of field scale and focusing distances
  6. 13 diaphragm blades that always give a rounded hole
  7. the aperture ring rotates smoothly, without intermediate values (important for movie shooting)
  8. the aperture control ring is located in front of the lens, which is very convenient
  9. virtually internal focus
  10. at f / 0.95 is good in the center of the frame

10 main disadvantages

  1. according to my measurements, the light transmission at f / 0.95 is at the level of T / 1.3-T / 1.4
  2. there are no CPU microprocessor pins to form the correct EXIF (for example, for manual lenses for Sony E / FE series Zeiss loxia there are CPU contacts)
  3. no autofocus (for example, inexpensive lenses for mirrorless cameras with an APS-C sensor, such as Yongnuo 50mm 1:1.8 DA DSM S, or Tartisan 27/2.8AF there is a motor for auto focus)
  4. front cover without latches, threaded (non-bayonet) hood must be used, no hood included
  5. small non-linear step at the aperture control ring between F / 2-F / 16
  6. focus ring rotates only a quarter of a full turn
  7. there is no lens profile for popular RAW converters, the lens is not 'hardwired' into modern cameras
  8. critically weak corners and edges of the image at almost any aperture value
  9. strong chromatic aberration
  10. very large/strong glare/ghosting in backlight and sidelight

Comment on the topic: Review MEIKE 35mm F0.95 Multi Coated (APS-C)

  • Rodion

By the nature of the image on APS-C, the lens resembles Zenitar 50 / 1.2s on ~APS-H: it is clear that the circuit is working at its limit, a powerful coma crawls out in the corners. In general, the result is very reminiscent of what I got from Zenithar at full frame.
