In short

MINOLTA MC TELE ROKKOR-HF 1:4.5 f=300mm is an old manual focus telephoto lens, designed for film cameras, produced since 1969. It looks very similar to other older similar 300 / 4.5 lenses from Minolta: ROKKOR-X HF, QD, T.D. It has a very high quality assembly and a good combination of focal length and aperture.

In general, MINOLTA MC TELE ROKKOR-HF 1: 4.5 f=300mm does not optically shine: strong chromatic aberration, mediocre resolution at an open aperture, a strong fear of flare.

Assembly, control, focus

Lens body It is made qualitatively. The diaphragm consists of six petals and forms a hole in the shape of a regular hexagon (view).

MINOLTA MC TELE ROKKOR-HF 1:4.5 f=300mm uses filters with a diameter of 72mm. On the body there is a focusing distance scale and a depth of field scale + a label for working in the infrared spectrum.

Focusing ring MINOLTA MC TELE ROKKOR-HF 1: 4.5 f=300mm rotates approx. 325 degrees (almost a complete turn). During focusing, the trunk of the lens moves forward, but the thread for the filters does not rotate. Focusing is performed by moving the entire lens block. The minimum focusing distance is 450 centimeters.

The tripod socket rotates only 90 degrees (strictly vertical or horizontal orientation), is fixed with a clamping screw.

The retractable hood is well fixed in the active and folded positions.

How to use SR/MC/MD mount lenses

To use a MINOLTA SR, MC, MD mount lens on modern mirrorless cameras, you should use the appropriate adapter:

The adapters are compatible with SR, MC and MD mount lenses and these mounts are backwards compatible. But the use of lenses with a MINOLTA SR, MC, MD mount on SLR cameras is difficult due to the long working distance. In such cases, a corrective lens adapter must be used, which will degrade the image quality.

Here, as usual: if this is 300 / 4.5 and not ED, then there is hardly anything better than Tair-3. More compact, lighter, maybe more convenient (than FS) - but not optically better.

    • Sergei

If there is no urgent need for shooting in the open (F4.5), then the Mamiya-Sekor C 300 mm f/ 5.6 ULD N is also highly praised - http://forum.mflenses.com/tair-33-vs-nikkor-ed-if-4-5-300mm-vs-mamyia-sekor-5-6-300mm-t80908.html , ED-IF Nikkor 300mm / 4.5 completely drains him in terms of XA.

Maybe something from 70-300 is better?
They seem to be inexpensive and lightweight for all systems. If on crop, then on Canon definitely
      55-250 is better.

      • Rodion

Inexpensive and light, although some (maybe not all) of them Tair is also enhanced by optical quality))

on Sony E, for example, all 70-300 are decent. And the more affordable cropped 55-210 is short.

        • after all

Sigma 70-300 costs 3000-5000, you can even find APO. In general, Sony is almost always cheaper.

Rokkor is one of the coolest objects that fell into my hands)) Probably photographing the moon was one of my cherished desires) And of course my interest in experiments: what will something look like if you shoot something at a short distance with such a lens . By the way, the photo of the circle is just a tree and the sun through it. It turned out surreal)) Well, and the desire to consider parts of the landscape, if you can’t reach it with your feet) I examined the quarry from all sides) And the tree. For certain reasons, it was not convenient to go to him, and now, admiring him for a year, I photographed him)

The lens has a good built-in hood, which allows you to work in partial backlight. Unfortunately, MDF is too big for shooting small birds. But the weight of the lens is quite comfortable.
It's a pity that this mount makes it difficult to use with most DSLRs due to the working distance.
