In short
CANON LENS FL 58mm 1:1.2 Canon Camera Co., INC. - a classic manual fast fix from a bygone era. There is a whole family of similar fifty-fifty and 'near-fifty' lenses from Canon, which includes almost 20 (!) main models (see the 'History' section below).
Nowadays CANON LENS FL 58mm 1:1.2 Canon Camera Co., INC. interesting with a huge relative aperture, which can be used for artistic purposes. Unfortunately, at F / 1.2 the lens is rather weak: low resolution, the lens is very afraid of flare and creates a lot of chromatic aberrations. But it is worth covering the aperture to F / 2, as the nature of the image will change dramatically.
All Canon 58/1.2 class lenses use the same optical design of 7 elements in 5 groups (classic Gauss lens design). In 1971, the scheme was supplemented by a more advanced 8/6 with the inclusion of an aspherical element.
This CANON LENS FL 58mm 1:1.2 Canon Camera Co., INC. refers to Canon's FL series lenses with FL mount. FL and FD series lenses are the easiest to use on mirrorless cameras. It is difficult to use this lens on Canon EOS EF SLR cameras - to be able to focus on infinity, you definitely need corrective lens adapter.
It's important: most likely the optical elements of this lens include thorium oxide, which is added to increase the refractive index with a smaller increase in dispersion. Perhaps this lens is a source of increased radiation.
It's important: despite the huge relative aperture of 1:1.2, time has taken its toll - CANON LENS FL 58mm 1:1.2 optics Canon Camera Co., INC. darkened (turned yellow). In 2022, the actual light transmission of the lens at F / 1.2 is in the region of T / 2.0 (which is more typical of modern lenses with F / 1.8). In addition, CANON LENS FL 58mm 1: 1.2 Canon Camera Co., INC. slightly diverts the picture into a yellow-green tint.

Canon FL series lenses have an additional locking ring that is responsible for attaching the lens to the camera. As a result, CANON LENS FL 58mm 1: 1.2 Canon Camera Co., INC. as many as 4 control rings are used: bayonet lock (rearmost silver ring), focus (wide, metal, ribbed), aperture setting (front silver), aperture reset (thin black ring).
Assembling, focusing
CANON LENS FL 58mm 1:1.2 Canon Camera Co., INC. well assembled.
The focusing ring is metal, with ribs and notches, rotates approximately 180 degrees (1/2 of a full turn). The ring is a little tight. During focusing, the front retractable part of the body frame does not rotate. Focusing occurs by moving the entire lens block. During focusing towards the MDF, the focus ring moves forward.
The silver diaphragm control ring has two special protrusions (lugs) for a comfortable grip.
Sample photos (Full Frame)
Pictures in the gallery were obtained using legendary camera Canon EOS-1 Ds Mark II (Full Frame, 17 MP) and a homemade adapter Canon FD -> Canon EF with a far focus limit of around 1.5 meters. Converting and processing raw RAW files with the original Canon DPP4 utility.
RAW '.CR2' original photos can be download / watch this link (20+ photos). Some of the photos were taken using two cartridge flashes. Mircopro VS-32W. One through an umbrella to the light, the second - through a small soft box to the background. Mud in the bokeh on the blur discs, these are snowflakes that have fallen on the front lens of the lens.
How to use FL/FD/FDn mount lenses
To use a Canon FL, Canon FD, or Canon FDn mount lens on modern mirrorless cameras, you should use the appropriate adapter:
- Canon RF/RF-S: adapter FD/FDn/FL -> RF/EOS R
- Canon EF-M: adapter FD/FDn/FL -> EF-M/EOS M
- Sony NEX/ILCE/IMCE/FE/E: adapter FD/FDn/FL -> NEX/ILCE/FE/E
- Nikon Z: adapter FD/FDn/FL -> Z
- Panasonic L / Sigma L / Leica L/T/TL: adapter FD/FDn/FL -> L
- fujifilm x: adapter FD/FDn/FL -> X/FX
- Samsung NX: adapter FD/FDn/FL -> NX
- Micro 4/3 (Panasonic/Olympus): adapter FD/FDn/FL -> M4/3
- Nikon 1 : adapter FD/FDn/FL -> N1
The adapters are suitable for FL, FD and FDn mount lenses, these mounts are backwards compatible. But using lenses with a Canon FL / Canon FD / Canon FDn mount on SLR cameras is difficult due to the long working distance. In such cases, a corrective lens adapter must be used, which will degrade the image quality.

Good live photos, nice picture. The lens is comfortable to use
If you expose a yellowed lens to ultraviolet light, the yellowing will disappear.

FIXED
What if the aperture ring rotates freely, without clicks, with any intermediate values? Maybe I have a second version of the lens? How is it different from the first one, besides this?
