      They will not be compact, because modern glasses work better with flares, have better micro-contrast and sharpness due to the greater number of elements than before. Let the experts correct me, but the same Nikon S 50mm f / 1.8 - 12 elements, where 6 central elements are a planar scheme, and the rest, so to speak, is a body kit.
