Impressions of the Canon EOS RP

Canon EOSRP

Canon EOSRP

The Canon EOS RP was unveiled on February 13, 2019 and is Canon's second full-frame mirrorless camera. The first was Canon EOSpresented six months earlier. Canon EOS RP specifications can be viewed here... In this note, I will express only my brief impressions.

The whole point of the Canon EOS RP boils down to being the most affordable full-frame mirrorless camera on the market. Canon EOS RP is about a third cheaper than a fairly budgetary one Nikon z5 and about a third cheaper than the old woman Sony a7IIwhich is still can be found in some stores. Older camera Sony a7 in stores, the new one is no longer found.

Canon EOS RP user gets exactly what he paid for this camera. You shouldn't expect anything special from the budget full-frame camera. Likely Canon EOS RP is designed to attract to the system Canon EOS on the mount RF the largest possible number of users, because Canon EOS on the mount RF there is still no cropped camera line. Usually, some crop cameras are significantly cheaper than the most affordable full-frame solutions, which makes it easier and faster to expand the number of users of a particular system. Unlike other manufacturers, Canon's mirrorless solutions have split into full-frame Canon R line (with bayonet RF) and a cropped ruler Canon EOS M (with bayonet Ef-m). RF mounts and Ef-m not compatible. As a result, Canon is pulling on two separate mirrorless systems.

As for the Canon EOS RP, this is an exclusively amateur solution with a number of limitations. For the amateur photographer, the Canon EOS RP is a godsend. For the professional Canon EOS RP can be a torment, especially after switching from DSLRs as Canon EOS 5D Mark III or Canon EOS 5D Mark IV... First of all, I want to point out that the Canon EOS RP has created a new class of Canon cameras, I would describe it as entry-level amateur full-frame cameras... I like to divide cameras into rulers. Very conditionally, I would attribute Canon EOS RP to the level of cameras 100D -> 200D -> 250D... The only significant difference is that the Canon EOS RP is a full-frame mirrorless solution. Once again, I want to separately note that the overall level of equipment Canon EOS RP is lower than that of the lines of SLR cameras. Canon EOS 6D -> 6D MarkII, Canon EOS 7D -> 7D MarkII, not to mention the ruler Canon EOS 5D -> 5D MarkII -> 5D Mark III -> 5D Mark IV.

Canon EOS RP is a delicious cake for those who shot with cropped mirror solutions, which all (except 7D/7D MarkII) refer to the amateur segment and who wants to try the full frame.

The heart of the Canon EOS RP is the already fairly old 26MP CMOS sensor, similar to that used on Canon EOS 6D Mark II, announced back in 2017. By today's standards, this sensor is rather weak, first of all it has a low dynamic range. Compared to today's more advanced cameras, the original RAW files from the Canon EOS RP are difficult to manipulate with RAW converters.

To further deepen the clouds, it should be noted that the Canon EOS RP has many limitations:

  1. no built-in image stabilizer (you need to use optics with built-in image stabilizer)
  2. only electronic front curtain shutter is supported (without the possibility of turning on the mechanical one). Negatively affects the blur zone under certain conditions, the problem is described here
  3. only 4 f / s with active focusing, but when switching to a speed of 5 fps, focus is locked on the first frame
  4. to achieve 4K video quality, you need to force the use of additional 1.6X cropping
  5. while shooting 4K video, focusing is disabled using DUAL PIXEL technology and autofocus becomes available only by contrast
  6. sufficiently strong rolling tent, electronic stabilizer degrades the image
  7. Minimal excerpt 1/4000 second shutter excerpt sync 1/180 second
  8. weak battery
  9. and so on.

In general, I was pleased with the communication with the Canon EOS RP. In experienced hands, you can squeeze a lot from it. I can safely recommend the Canon EOS RP to all hobbyists who shoot with cropped SLR cameras. But for professionals and advanced amateurs, I would recommend looking for something more practical (for example, Canon EOS-R6, Nikon z5 or even the same Sony a7II). In any case, most likely, Canon EOS RP will become a 'people's' camera and will delight a huge number of its users. You can easily buy a camera with a good discount on AliExpress by this link.

  • Nicholas

Thank you so much for the article, and I want to ask for advice.
Now I want to upgrade to a full frame from my Nikon D5100, I want FF first of all for landscapes, shooting a sunset, night shooting of the starry sky on a tripod (it is desirable that the usable ISO is higher)
I considered all used ear and UPC full-frames with a price tag of up to 20k hryvnia (Nikon D600 / 750/800, Canon 5DM2 / 6D, Sony A7, etc.), but most of them are very overused and with huge mileage, but despite this worth dofiga.
Do you think it might be better to report a few thousand and take a new Canon RP? Or will the same Nikon D600 be no worse? Thanks in advance for your reply

    • Oleg

For landscapes, definitely 600 :) excellent dynamic range and good color (taste is certainly not a problem in skillful hands, but I really don't like this matrix). And the price for the used and optics (if there is no need to indulge in different old "legends), everything will be easier. The only negative is the size ...

      • Sandro

The size and weight of a landscape camera kit is the most critical parameter.
First of all, because a tripod is highly desirable for a landscape, a scattering of light filters and the ability to run a lot and quickly. ;)

        • Nicholas

Sandro and Oleg, thanks for the answers!
As you know, “the best camera is the one with you”, but I'm not particularly picky in terms of size, weight, etc. I dragged and carry a tripod, a few bags and everything is fine)
But still, if in terms of image quality and other characteristics the RP is not much worse than the other cameras I have listed, and not much more expensive, then I will certainly prefer the RP as a more compact option. But if the same Nikon D600, D750 or Canon's penny / pole is seriously better than RP in terms of DD, working ISO, color depth, etc., then I will not hesitate to take them despite the size and weight

    • Sandro

It all depends on your optics preference. In general, for a landscape just under rp there is now an excellent set of RF 50 / 1.8, 16 / 1.8 and 24-105 stm.
These are cheap amateur lenses of decent optical quality and minimal weight. A similar kit for a Nikon DSLR will require significantly more space and weight

In addition, the mirrorless has less tripod weight requirements and is much easier to operate on a tripod.

If you prefer optics with manual focus, the RP will support almost any old optics and, due to the highlighting of the focus area (picking), it is much more convenient to use.

      • Arkady Shapoval

The person considers the minimum budgets. The new RF 50 / 1.8, 16 / 1.8 and 24-105 stm are too tough for him after RP

        • Sandro

I would like to believe that the author chooses a camera with the knowledge that the optics for it will also cost some money. If not, then maybe you don't need to crawl out of the crop, but think more about expanding the optics fleet?

Actually, personally, I would prefer to take a canon rp or nikon z5 even on the secondary, if only because wedding bombiles do not use such cameras and they are obviously in better condition.

          • Nicholas

            Thank you for your reply!
I understand that optics will cost money, but I am counting primarily on more affordable second-hand manuals

As for getting out of the crop, it is inevitable, since for me the main problem of the crop is that it is more problematic to take pictures of the starry sky on it because of the so-called “600/500 rule”. The same 16mm lens on the crop becomes 24mm, and this shortens the exposure time until the stars begin to turn into tracks. Yes, and most FF cameras have a working ISO and other characteristics better than crop

    • Oleg

You won't be able to add a couple of thousand to 20 thousand UAH to buy a new RP. Its price in some stores is 25-27 thousand UAH - this is without an adapter for EF lenses. Therefore, you will have to buy only new lenses for the RF mount, that is, there are still considerable additional costs, even if you take not Canon, but, for example, Meike. You can, of course, buy a non-native adapter, which is much cheaper, but it's still + a couple of thousand.

      • Nicholas

        Thank you for your reply!
Of course, I expressed myself somewhat inaccurately about “a couple of thousand”)
I meant that all used FFs from my list (except for the D600 and Canon's penny) cost about 23-25k hryvnia in good condition. Therefore, I got the idea to report a few thousand and buy a new RP, for the price you said
I am also aware of adapters and optics, and I am not chasing a new thing - I am quite satisfied with used manuals, the main thing is that they are optically good

    • Alexey

I bought it as a first fotik and overall ff 610 this summer and can be found in good condition for a reasonable price, just in your budget.
I took it for 45 thousand rubles (+ -your budget in hryvnia) with a run of 6 thousand frames, in perfect condition + 2 sd Sony cards with a bonus of 128 GB are not quite budgetary. The man just bought it, pampered a little and as a result, the fotik simply lay on his shelf for several years.
      True, this is without optics.
I shoot in conjunction with a tamron 35 1.4, incredibly happy

      • Nicholas

        Thanks for the advice!

    • Artem

I have a Nikon D5200 and additionally bought a Nikon Z50 with an FTZ adapter. I will say that the bzk crop with the new firmware will pleasantly surprise you: eye autofocus, zebra crossing, transferring images to a tablet lying in a backpack behind your back, control from a smartphone / tablet as a remote control and a screen in one bottle, 4k video, image sharpness on the order will become higher, better work in the dark, rubbery RAW, and so on. The price is low per carcass

      • Artem

+ all old optics will still serve, and the focusing speed and accuracy will increase. Back focus will pass like a bad dream.

      • Nicholas

        Thank you for your reply!
A little higher, in Sandro's answer, I have already described why I need FF. Autofocus on the eyes, transfer of images, control from a smartphone (there is already a remote control) are not particularly interesting to me. But 4K video and good RAW would not hurt me, so I wondered if I should take RP. Still, all Nikons on my list have Full HD videos, not 4K. Yes, the characteristics of the matrices (DD, color depth) they have better, but in principle I do not mind sacrificing this in order to take a new device

        • Oleg

4K video RP shoots with a crop factor. Consider this.

    • Alexander

he himself not so long ago migrated from d5100, but to nikon z5.
migrating from nikon to kenon is like being straight and then something changed in life.
and in addition, the canon was not considered, since the R version is an order of magnitude more expensive than the z5, while clearly inferior to him in my opinion.
Well, RP has nothing to say here .. it's not at all understand what.
in a budget of up to 20k as you write it is really possible to take d610 or even d750.
but there is a problem, their runs are indecent and they still ask for money like in a durk for them ..
the camera has a shutter resource of 150 thousand .. people put up for sale a carcass of 200k mileage and ask 15k for it .. just inadequate. Just write your price to the seller, if he is not a fool, then there will be a normal adequate bargaining, because he understands that the time of these cameras is up and he is already looking at the purchase (or has already bought) a bezarkalny carcass.

      • Joe

Canon EOS R is an order of magnitude more expensive than Nikon Z5?
We look at the prices on bhphotovideo: $ 1296,95 and $ 1599, respectively, that is, the difference = $ 302,05.
It turns out that the Canon EOS R is 23,29% more expensive than the Nikon Z5.
For reference, “an order of magnitude more expensive” is 10 times, that is, Canon EOS R, according to you, should cost about 13 thousand dollars.

When comparing cameras, of course, not only the price and technical characteristics can be taken into account (for some of which the Canon EOS R looks preferable to the Nikon Z5). But to build comparisons and give an assessment literally at the level of “don't understand what” is at least incorrect. Moreover, you probably have no practical experience of using Canon EOS RP.

And the most curious thing is your thought about the preferability of buying an old Nikon model instead of any new camera (for a slightly higher price), despite the fact that, according to your experience, these old Nikons are sold not cheaply, and in a state when the shutter resource is almost exhausted ... Excellent logic.

        • Joe

          Price clarification: Nikon Z5 = $ 1296,95 and Canon EOS R = $ 1599.

        • Victor

It is clear that it gives you joy to cling to the words of the interlocutors, but after all, any adequate person understands that “by an order of magnitude” literally means not “10 times”, but “significantly”.

And regarding the superiority of the technical characteristics of the EOS R - as a rule, most of the technical characteristics are completely leveled by the experience of the shooter, which can be clearly seen in this example https://www.flickr.com/photos/man_from_siberia/51340608410/

There is an exif, shot with the EOS R - that's all there is to say about this shot. The same could be obtained on a smartphone.

In general, the RP really functionally could be equated with the a3500 - a kind of entry-level camera for beginners (adjusted for the difference in prices, of course)

          • Andrii

“By an order of magnitude” means 10 times, not significantly.

            • Victor

              In mathematical terms, yes.

If one reads what people write, it becomes clear to the normal (I emphasize - normal) when reading this expression that it means “significantly”, despite the mathematically incorrect use. And this is "significant" for each his own, for someone and three hundred dollars is a significant amount.

The literary experts will certainly disagree.

              • Andrii

Upon reading this expression, it immediately becomes clear that these "normal" do not know its meaning and meaning. No more, no less. And here it is not a matter of literalism, but of a weak education.

              • Trueash

                >> And this is "significant" for each his own, someone and three hundred dollars is a significant amount - Exactly. Therefore, “by an order of magnitude” is not “for each his own”, but “10 times”.

              • Victor

The point is EXACTLY in literalism. No more, no less.

              • Victor

If we talk about poor education, then the construction “it becomes clear that ...” is clearly not in your favor :-)

              • Andrei

“Not in your favor” - can you list all those to whom you are addressing?

              • Human

I don’t consider myself a literalist (I’m mistaken), but I agree with the fact that “by an order of magnitude” is 10 times. It's just that those who do not know this intuitively invent something in their head, so a very specific statement becomes something vague “dependent on perception”.

PS I had something like this in childhood, for some reason I did not know what a “couple” is, and in my brain, when someone said “well, I'll take a couple more pieces”, I saw it as about 3-5))

              • Victor

Obviously, an appeal to those who used the indicated construction, as well as the concept of "weak education".

              • Arkady Shapoval

                comrades stop

              • Victor

2Person: Of course, I know what it is “by an order of magnitude” :) And nevertheless, I understand what a person meant when he used such an expression in the context of “much more expensive” (for someone who used, of course, this difference will seem kopecks)

But there are those who will not be able to sleep peacefully if they do not try to find fault with such trifles.

              • Victor

                >> stop

Finished, let everyone stay with their own) I got carried away because of intolerance to literalism.

      • Nicholas

        Thank you for your reply!
As for the transition from Nikon to Boot, it will be easy for me, since I used and only use the whale and Arsat 2/50 (the same Helios-81N, only produced after the collapse of the USSR). So the adapter and normal used / ear manuals should solve most of the issues.
As for the prices of used fullframes, I also agree, you described the situation with perfect accuracy, so I started looking at the RP Boot as an alternative for about the same money

      • Maksim

I bought a used Nikon d610 a month ago, with a mileage of 35 thousand shots. For adequate money, in my opinion. After Nikon d3100, it's just something unthinkable. Working ISO on FF after the budget crop, some kind of fantasy. Now I'm shooting on youngnow 50 and 35 mm fixes.

    • alexey_laa

I recently bought myself an inexpensive “full frame” for amateur photography - Nikon D600. Thanks to Arkady - I turned to him a couple of times for advice, some information was useful for me as for someone who had never shot with Nikon and SLR cameras in general :) (my main camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G80). When I was choosing a camera, I was interested in the image that a full-frame camera and lenses give. Nikon D600 was sold to me at a very low price. It is quite possible to use it, although in terms of the appearance and the shutter resource, the camera has already worked its way. It took me a long time to figure out autofocus. I tried to shoot buildings with evening façade illumination on the D600 - I liked the ability to shoot with an exposure of -2EV and draw out shadows well. There is also relatively little noise at high ISOs.

      • Nicholas

        Thanks for the advice!

And it's good that the cropped mount is different. So at least the optics and the cameras themselves can be made more compact. I was always infuriated by the topic of crop on a full-frame mount, when under the crop everything goes according to the residual principle. I'm not saying that Canon is actively developing the M mount, but at least on the P mount, everything is under the same sensor size.
Here Nikon with his 50-koy with a huge hole and a small matrix, of course, upset. And the line of lenses for this matrix is matched, one is more fantastic than the other. And honey agarics need to differentiate the pants when buying and do not accidentally buy the wrong thing.

    • Sandro

The EOS M is a great system if the quality of the sensor is good enough for these cameras. Well, if you take at least m5, m6 and m50 as a camera, and not older and younger models.

      • Vlad

A good crop system is Sony: there are a lot of good optics for it - both native and third-party manufacturers. From Jungnow to Zeiss. Plus, you can screw the FF glass. And efm in this planet is a poor relative

        • Joe

There are 74 EF-M mount lenses, here's the list: https://lesdeuxpiedsdehors.com/en/canon-ef-m-lens-list/
If this is not enough, then any EF and EF-S lenses can be used via an adapter.
          “Poor relative,” well, well.

          • Victor

            Of course poor.

Under Sony there are already two autofocus zooms with a native mount and f / 2.8, while Canon has none.

            • Rodion

EF-M has a pancake to rule the world.

            • Joe

If you measure the usefulness of cameras in some invented zooms on the go, then in response I can say that for the Canon mirror crop there are as many as two autofocus zooms with a native mount and aperture 1.8 (Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art and 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art, if anyone does not know), but for Sony - none, and on this basis, claim that Sony's mirrorless crop is some kind of flawed system.

              • Victor

These are not “invented” zooms on the go, but quite real ones and, it should be noted, have excellent optical quality, in contrast to the “native” zoom for EF-s 17-55 SLR systems.
You can tell real users of these lenses about 18-35 and 50-100 at Canon, for example, with 80d, so they will laugh.

              • Victor

That's even if you don't even remember that so far (!!) not a single canon crop cannon has a built-in stub, the only one has an electronic shutter, none of the existing canon crop cameras captures normal 4k video, etc.
The relative is still poor, yes.

              • Rodion

The EF-M also has advantages associated with the shortest operating distance among the UPC and the widest die shaft, which again makes it "omnivorous" for third-party optics.

              • Victor

Rodion, it seems like Sony E has the same RO, the bayonet diameter is larger, and the shaft is definitely not less.

Correct me if I am mistaken.

              • Rodion

Well, yes, RO is from the same as that of Sonya, I was mistaken. But one way or another, the Ju-12 gets up on the EF-M and does not get up on the cropped Sonya. That is, it is more convenient to work with optics with extreme ZFOs. But again, the masses do not need it)

              • Arkady Shapoval

I don’t see any enthusiasts at all since ju-12

              • Rodion

                Well, yes (((((((

          • Arkady Shapoval

in fact - very poor, because there are only 16 (sixteen) autofocus solutions with an EFM mount, and they are all listed here https://radojuva.com/2009/07/canon-eos-ef-m/

        • Sandro

This is theory in its purest form. In practice, for a cheap aps-c mirrorless camera, a super compact set of ef-m obtik and a native adapter for mirror optics with ideal af is more than enough.

In general, it seems that only canon have not forgotten that mirrorless is primarily a compact alternative.

  • Alexey

Wonderful camera, I have already 2 rocks. RP zavdyaki having tried over 60 old manual devices with bagatma bayonets - Kenon FD, Nikon F, Minolta MD, M42, Konika AR, DKL. Advance the zone and focus and increase up to 10 times, at the same time with the pop-up screen will help you. Only a few serious shortcomings - a weak battery (so for 200-300 frames) and the visibility of a built-in stabilizer. The matrix is also yak 6d mark2, format kenonivska transfer of koloriv, for my amateur tasks - a practically ideal camera. It is more beautiful than R5 and R6. Before that, there was a link to the EOS buv in the kit, there were some problems with the new optics. Until tsih bouv Nikon J1, with a second frame is not anywhere in the picture.

RP for its money is a good camera, but if you look at the competitors, then RP is outdated and cut off

    • Alexander Pivovar

It is more suitable. So, there is a shortage in the Republic of Poland vistachak, ale and a good bagato.
Mayu at once Nikon D610 is a miraculous camera. Ale for the woman, won, appeared with an uncomfortable importance.
For the first time in the rock we were given a Canon RP with RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM - and if the RP didn’t hit the D610, then the woman died in Kenon. It was worthy of a low vaga, permanent LiveView, WiFi and simplicity of victorious. The woman, with great satisfaction, took RP for walks, photographed in JPEG (and it's really good here) and immediately posted signs in social media in the distance via a smartphone.
Now our family is planning to buy a mirrorless camera. Aleh sooner for all of her will be the Z5 from FTZ, and some of the Nikon AF-S monstrous systems.

  • Sandro

Question to the author: what specific limitations of the camera for photography will not allow her to use the so-called. "Advanced amateurs". Also, that the manufacturer of the camera does not guarantee that it will be protected when operating in the rain or snowstorm?
With professionals, everything is clear. Burst speed is definitely not for bombing. ;)

    • Oleg

How to pull the shadows. Pull pull pull we can’t pull it out.

      • Sandro

If you need to draw shadows by more than a stop, then you do not need to change the camera, but the approach to the exposure of the frame.
Stop-and-a-half you pull out of any fullframe.

    • Arkady Shapoval

The advanced amateur has already told something in his life and RP in general can be a serious disappointment for him.

      • Sandro

This reminds me of Olegas, who spat on rp a year ago, and in recent videos began to praise her as a travel camera.

If an advanced amateur has seen a lot in his life, for example, nikon d40, then rp will definitely not disappoint him. ;)

I now have both canon r and canon rp. I only use R for reportage, staged portraits, and tilt-shift architecture.
RP for all filming that doesn't need big, heavy glasses or hell of a battery life. That is, in fact, for advanced amateur tasks. In addition, in about a year, rp can be taken on the secondary housing as a very inexpensive amateur camera, which (unlike other full frames) will not be used by weddings and others.

  • Human

    For example

  • Victor

    Full frame A3500? :)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      what?

    • Rodion

If I shot only in RAW + JPEG, then it would be)) 0

      • Arkady Shapoval

now it is clear, this is a reference to the a3000, which mows under a DSLR, and rp, apparently, mows under a professional "camera"

  • Oleg

By the way, RP is much inferior in parameters to the cheapest full frame Nikon Z5 - stronger than the difference in price between them. If you do not take into account the fundamental love for a particular brand or the presence of an optics park, perhaps the Z5 is preferable for those who want to switch to a new full frame with the least financial investment.

Or wait 4-5 years, when full-frame bzs will appear on the market at an adequate price, and not close to new cameras.

  • Alexander Pivovar

I fully agree with Arkady. RP is a great camera for the hobbyist. The low price and a large number of EF optics "on hand" make it a very, very tempting purchase. I was personally very pleased with the Canon RP + RF 35mm 1.8 IS STM stage. Ultra compact and lightweight bundle for everything. And having bought some more 85mm portrait, you can fully enjoy the mirrorless full frame. For an amateur - behind the eyes.

    • Sandro

So far, everything is sad with the portetniki there. Everything that is looks like bricks, and the native RF 85/2 is just beyond good and evil ...

There is a lack of an analogue of samyang 75mm 1.8 for Sony.

      • Alexander Pivovar

There is also an adapter for EF. The camera works well with the EF 85mm F1.8 USM, so I see no problems. Nikon Z has the same situation

        • Arkady Shapoval

At Nikon Z the situation with optics for SLR cameras is worse, since their adapter limited the work with AF-lenses (both native and from third-party manufacturers). That is, there is no possibility, for example, to use autofocus with the legendary 135 / 2D DC AF, 105 / 2D DC AF, 180 / 2.8 AF, 28 / 1.4D AF and just budget solutions like 50 / 1.4D AF, 50 / 1.8D AF, 35 / 2.0D AF (pain and suffering!) Etc.
All native and the vast majority of non-native mirror optics under EF work for Canon through an adapter.

          • Alexander Pivovar

I agree, there is a problem with Nikon. Kenon is better. But, the presence of support for AF-S lenses is already good.
I now have a Nikon D610 with 3 lenses. Two will work with FTZ: 24-85mm VR and 85mm 1.8G. The only problem is with the old-school AF 70-210 F4, but I have already found a replacement for it: Tamron 70-210mm F4 VC USD - which works with Z-kami after the update.

          • Nicholas

But we must pay tribute - the situation with the fleet of optics for the Z line is changing. Quite budget versions appear. Of course, it's a pity for the old AF lenses ... But perhaps their time has passed, or not, their time has passed under the new format. But no one forbids using them with carcasses of their contemporaries. Moreover, on our secondary housing (I just oh ... renal) Nikon D850 - Horror USD 1,362 (proof - https://www.kijiji.ca/v-camera-camcorder-lens/calgary/nikon-d850-body-great-condition/1598350634). When I switched to Z7II I sold 135 DC2. Really it was a pity ... But he does not pull 45 Mp. Many lenses, even AF-S lenses, turned out to be very weak in resolution. So far, only the Nikon 500mm 5.6 PF remains from the AFSs. Love forever :), well, or until the analogue z appears. Do not confuse times - this time and of course, as in acoustics - the cost of an amplifier (carcass) is about a third of the cost of speakers (lenses). For the price and quality blank. This is type two. Something like this. They just washed out loud.

            • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is relative. The same “weak” 50 / 1.8D on the D850 on the closed side is difficult to distinguish from something more substantial. It would be the same on the Z7 / Z7ii.

  • Kiril Yankovoy

I downloaded the raves, twisted it, and unexpectedly the Chinese lenses turned out to be very good. I didn’t even expect that on the open it is no worse than my 5 dm3 and 85 / 1.8 ycm, and the 35 is good. Do you get paid extra that the RP review contains pictures for Chinese lenses?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is very relative. There should have been a comment from user R2D2, but the stop-word filter did not pass it. So these lenses seemed terrible to him.

As for RP, this is not a review, but an impression. I have not done detailed camera reviews lately, as this is a very difficult and ignoble business. Modern cameras have a lot of functions that I am simply too lazy to describe. In this impression, I wanted to convey an idea from the class of this camera, from which it is necessary to start “dancing” when analyzing it.

As for the surcharge - no, they don’t pay extra. Here on Radozhiv, not a single review of photographic equipment has been paid for. Although, I should note that some Chinese manufacturers make it easier - they give the equipment for review without the need to return. It is very convenient to do such reviews, as there is no need to rush to return. Fortunately, the requirements of the Chinese marketing department are quite simple - you need sample photos and social media posts. I am free to write whatever I want. But, unfortunately, for example, after the review of 7artisans 35 / 0.95, where I uncovered a deception with aperture ratio, 7artisans no longer cooperate with me. The same goes for Pergear 12/2, where the review has horror in the corners of the frame. The same applies to some other manufacturers, for example, IRIX, for which it is too expensive to send the lens for review (meaning the fee for sending the lens in both directions, last time it cost about $ 300).

Big brands, of course, do not allow themselves this, since the number of Radozhiva's readers for them is less than a drop in the ocean.

      • Arthur

Arkady, please tell me where you can get acquainted in detail with the functionality of rp (in the menu, each section is considered to be). If you know this, of course))

        • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, it is known. The instruction gives very good information, the most thorough.

  • Oleg

Take a new RP than a boo SLR. It will definitely be better with manual ones, simply because many do not work on a DSLR due to the difference in the working distance. Then look, buy for 5-6 thousand UAH 55/58 f1.2 FD or FL and you will get a thrill from the process and the result (if you have enough patience). These are the most affordable options with such aperture for a full frame, and they do not fully work on DSLRs. Maybe they will rise in price later, because they can be relatively inexpensive now, because they are not suitable for owners of DSLRs.

    • Nicholas

      I didn’t like 50 1.2, left 1.4 fd

      • Gregor_S

yes, 50 / 1.4 FD is very good

    • Nicholas

      Thank you for your reply!

  • anonym

and I'm looking at sony a7c. who knows, tell me what it has with the dynamic range, the noise of the matrix (relative to alternatives and competitors with equal ISO) and in general how convenient it is when used with almost exclusively manual optics?

is there anything radically better or is this an ok choice?

    • Nicholas

if not native optics are used, my resolution was reduced to 6 megapixels on a7c

      • Nicholas

        a7s

    • Rodion

The camera is quite comfortable, you can get used to it (grip after DSLRs sucks). There is an electronic shutter (absolutely silent). Norm writes videos in FHD. ISO is quite working up to ~ 24k, more is rarely needed. Due to the resolution of the matrix, it is not very demanding for optics, no color shift. As for Nikolai's comment, I did not understand why the resolution is reduced to 6 megapixels there) it gives 6 megapixels in the APS-C mode, which is turned on either automatically when the optics for the crop are recognized, or you can manually switch it. JVI / EVI can also be switched by the proximity sensor or by hand. The sensor sometimes fades with me, it also often reacts falsely if you shoot with the screen unfolded. In short, infinite. The EVI has a magnifying glass, I like the principle of operation less than my previous Canon 600D camera. I use picking very rarely, it doesn't really help, as it seems to me. Important: you need to develop it in the Republic of Latvia, not in IE. In IE, DD is cut very much, there are articles on the Internet about this. Not so long ago I discovered this effect myself.
Considering that the camera costs $ 400-500 on the secondary housing - the topic is normal if 12 megapixels are not intimidating.

      • Victor

Judging by the Latin symbol in the name, we are most likely talking about the A7C 2021 release :-)

      • anonym

here it is necessary to clarify the model: I was interested in the A7C (which is compact, with a viewfinder on the side), and not the A7S.

I misunderstood something about aps-c too. how so crop up to 6 megapixels? because if the full frame is 24 megapixels, then the crop area of the APS-C should be about 10 megapixels, if you count in proportion to the area of the frame. Well, that is, if you shoot in a full frame, and then stupidly crop in the editor, you get about 10 megapixels in the cropped area.

but in general they raised an interesting question. Now I have a NEX-6, which has a 16MP APS-C sensor, and now I wondered if the decrease in pixel density (in terms of the number of pixels per unit area of the sensor) would be a step backward on the A7C compared to the NEX-6? on the other hand, considering mainly manual optics, and moreover, old optics, this will probably only be a plus.

        • Human

about 6MP there was a statement about the A7S, this is sony well done, of course, to call the cameras the same.

About pixel density, as for me - in practice it is not noticeable at all. No matter how much I looked at pictures from Canon 90D (32MP crop) comparing them with 12 ff and 6th crop, I did not notice any advantages of BOLD pixels, and almost no one sees them judging by the forums, apparently this is the lot of only meters of photography.

          • Rodion

For me personally, the biggest plus of the fat pixel at ff 12 MP is the ability to use optics with an extremely small back focal segment without color shift. You can remember how much 7artisans 35 / 1.2 shifts on small-pixel matrices (20 Mp A3500) - I don't want this)
Another of the pluses, which are on the verge of good and evil, are small file sizes and fast processing.

            • anonym

Oh, I have almost all of these optics. I specially selected for the sake of compactness one where an adapter of minimum thickness is needed.

the leaders here are my favorite olympus pen-f system (but these, however, reliably cover only half of the frame, because they were designed as a half-frame system). rangefinder M39 are also very compact, but somehow I haven't accumulated a lot of optics for this system.
the next ones are konika hexanon ar, there, too, everything turns out pretty compactly and at the same time full frame and a bunch of good lenses are available at a relatively low price, although, of course, the focus and aperture control is much less convenient than that of pen-f.

              • Rodion

Konica AR is a mirror system, it does not give much advantage in compactness. The distance there is at least 34 mm for the optics. Whether it's all sorts of modern artisans with their ~ 20 mm or even the ancient Soviet Jupiter-12, recessed into the camera entirely (~ 7 mm) ... By the way, I recently saw on Avito a Yu-12 with a sharpened rear lens so that it would fit into the matrix shaft APS-C cameras.

          • Seladir

            > call cameras the same

It can be perceived this way only if the knowledge of the alphabet at the level "es as a dollar" x)

who has a really rich vocabulary of designations

      • anonym

by the way, about the rabbis. LR, as I guess, is lightroom, and IE has no idea what it is at all.

but both are irrelevant for me. I have a choice between rawtherapee and darktable, of which I am used to using the first :). for rabbis from nex-6 works well.

        • Human

IE is Imaging Edge, a bundle of Viwer & Edit spesial for Sony

      • Human

By the way, this miracle sensor broke down completely. There is also an interesting moment when you turn it off from time to time, regardless of what was filmed, a photo or 4K, it sometimes clicks the shutter, I read somewhere that this is how broken pixels are meant, isn't it?

        • Rodion

For me, this is also a mystery - why does she click the shutter after turning off. I didn’t understand.

          • anonym

my prehistoric nex-6 also clicks the shutter at times after shutdown. mystery :).

            • Victor

And my third nex clicks. And also not always.

      • Human

Does RawTherapee cut DD too? Or is there no information about this? How can you check this at home?

        • Rodion

I do not know. You can check it very simply. Shoot a frame with 2-3EV overexposure, then drag it to ImagingEdge and LR. Or, in your case, in RT and LR. Specifically, in the case of Sony cameras, Lightroom pulls out overexposure (specifically overexposure) many times better than Imaging Edge, which cannot work with overexposures at all. It was determined by me experimentally, when my friend pulled the photo much better than me, but I could not do the same in IE in any way. He did it in LR, then I was also able to reproduce his result. Then I googled on this topic - it turned out that the problem is known.

    • Victor

If you focus on this rating
      https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/

the sensor in the A7C is one of the best today in terms of the indicators you mentioned.

      The choice is quite ok.

    • Vlad

The A7c is, in fact, a slightly simplified A7 3 in a more compact body. Read their comparisons and understand how critical the differences are for you (they are not too significant). If much cheaper and slightly worse - you can look at Nikon z5. Donate high ISO and rate of fire, but save $ 800

      • anonym

Nikon needs to be seen, thanks. the rate of fire is not very fundamental, but high ISOs are essential when using old optics, although, however, the stub in the carcass (Sony has, but Nikon?) somewhat smoothes this matter.
Compactness is important, I would not want to make the camera much larger than the NEX-6. the availability of adapters for the optics of different systems on sale is still in question, this will have to be bought all over again, mine are all under e-mount.

for nex-6, when shooting with manual optics, I really miss a feature like “use shutter speed no shorter than X”. in the automatic ISO selection mode in the aperture priority mode (often this is the most convenient way), it brings the shutter speed to 1/60 s, after which it starts to raise the ISO, but for many lenses it is desirable to make the shutter speed limit shorter, in accordance with the FR of the lens, about which the camera, of course she cannot guess. Then you have to manually either set the desired ISO level, or switch to S mode, which is inconvenient with changing lighting. although you can adapt.

I wonder if some of the current cameras have such a feature?

        • anonym

          * instead of “not shorter” read “not longer”. to avoid shaking.

        • Nicholas

          Compactness: on the attached photo
Stab: Nikon Z5 has a five-axis stub in the carcass
Adapters: are on sale and will have to be purchased

          • anonym

oh, thanks for the tip of the site, where it was watched, it is necessary to look.

          • Vlad

A7c is still noticeably more than nex-6. And much less than З5. But not so comfortable

            • anonym

Well, there is nowhere to go too much. if you change nex-6 for something, then for fullframe, and among them a7c seems to be the most compact.

  • Novel

Moved a year and a half ago from 6d, and RP has solid pluses (these are generally pluses of the EOS R system)
Back / front focuses are not possible.
The 6d actually had one focus point, the RP had focus across the entire field of the frame, a thousand points. In 6d, it literally constrained you in the foreshortenings / plots.
Even more optics are supported, including FD optics, which have received a second life.
Lack of autofocus on such glasses? It doesn't matter, there is focus picking.
And the main thing about RP is its size. If you put 40mm on it, then not a single guard / policeman or anyone else will ever tell you “do not shoot! 1111 forbidden! 11 ”)) because in such a bundle the camera looks like a regular soap dish. This is a huge plus.
At the same time, no one canceled the panoramas with which you can get a wide angle, and no one canceled the 1.6 crop mode if you need to grab something larger from 40mm. That is, for, for example, traveling, you replace heavy zooms like 24-70 with this pancake)) and it is more pleasant to carry a light camera.
And yes, dynamic range. It depends on what to compare with. If the full-frame sensor of 2019 is not enough to get good photos, then it's not about the camera, but the photographer and his skills))
I'm just a hobbyist, but this camera is awesome)

    • Novel

      Upd.
About the dimensions. Not only a security guard, but also a certain potential robber will never think that it is expensive. This is if you are traveling to different not the richest countries))
      Or here's an example.
A bunch of Nikon D5200 + Sigma 17-50 (also with a pale one) in Portugal, the security officials refused to admit to football, they probably feared that there was a hyperzoom for shooting football from the upper tier)))
I had to take it to the storage room.
RP is 2 times less and no one would think about it (with a pancake :)

    • Seladir

      > And yes, dynamic range. It depends on what to compare with. If the 2019 full-frame sensor isn't enough to get good photos

The matrix there is related to the 6D Mark II of 2017. In which the DD is worse than in 6D, at least the shadows stretch worse. 6D - 2012. A bit back for a modern camera. And this is really a challenge for working in many genres. Sony A7R2 2015 makes a huge difference in terms of stretching shadows, only starting from R5 / R6 Canon caught up more or less.

    • Arthur

+ 100% to what was said. Also a bunch.

  • Mr. boggy

It seems like the time of miracles has come, the back-front is no longer relevant, everything flies, but there is nowhere else to compactly ... But the pictures from the UPC are rather weak, in addition to this matrix, which everyone knows, I see that the sharpness is soapy, something is missing. Perhaps the fact is that the UPC work as a video and on a constantly switched on matrix, plus sensors and so on on it. For DSLRs, the matrix opens and turns on at the time of exposure and shooting, and perhaps this is why the ancient 5D MKII took sharper and better pictures, the network is full of examples. And the FF does not give a win for this camera; Even the first R is worse in terms of sharpness and realism than the 5d mark4, and precisely because of the included matrix of the mirrorless system. The only UPC that amazed me was the Fudzh 50th crop of the SF, which still has a rangefinder-style body, it even has a fully working inside chamber, editors can only be turned on for complex jobs. Street photography and street portraits there are very easy to work with, the main thing is not to drive the model completely into the shade or under the Christmas trees.)))

    • Arkady Shapoval

Everything is relative. At the bzk, you can turn on a fully mechanical shutter and it will be the same as on the ZK. True, for this RP, only the rear curtain can be mechanical, but this does not play a special role, because the ZK has had this method since 1999 (for example, the first Nikon D1, D1H, D70, D70s, etc.) and there users did not even know that the front curtain electronic.

    • Joe

      >But the pictures from the UPC are rather weak, in addition to this matrix, which everyone knows, I see that the sharpness is a bit soapy, something is missing.

What fairy tales are you telling?
Everything is fine with mirrorless cameras with quality, as well as with SLRs, provided that both are used correctly with serviceable high-quality lenses.

    • Gregor_S

“But the pictures from the UPC are rather weak, in addition to this matrix, which everyone knows ...”

      It's funny
but no one seems to know this except you.

      • Mr. boggy

It’s better for you, you know less, stronger ... You hold the camera.))) According to the examples in the test, Arkady has good pictures, angles, and a baby photo is excellent. But the pictures themselves are so-so in quality, it is clear that the processor worked with sharpness, crushing the noise of the live view of the matrix mode, and then restored it to an acceptable level. The wow effect is not visible, although this is a novelty. The same 5Dmk2, this mammoth, shot much better both in color and in sharpness.

  • Arthur

For me, after 600 d, it’s just fantastic rp. I can’t stand it when they say that it’s amateur. Of the minuses for me, a weak battery, but only for video, but for photos in general everything is fire.

  • Mr. boggy

Economic stub, trimmed in everything. The picture is like that of 6d, iridescently saturated, but it is far from nickels, not to mention units ... Kenon wants to save money by developing mirrors and a bunch of optics for them, but there are still many shortcomings. The picture is subjected to double processing from noise, as it is being shot from live view, or like soapboxes. It's noticeable in the picture. And because of these problems, I’m in no hurry to switch to mirrorless ones, and besides, the full frame body is smaller than that of 70d, have you seen the lenses, their weight? And, of course, the butblock is another 300 dollars pliz ... Case design for women and dwarfs, I need at least 145 mm wide and 90 mm high, and any thickness, because there are no mirrors and pentaprisms. And why cut the width and height, well, tell me already that you save pancake on plastic.

    • Victor

Each camera has its own audience.

If RP is not enough for you (this is essentially the initial full frame) - there is a Canon R3 / Sony A1 / Nikon Z9)))

  • Arkady Shapoval

I've cleaned up the comments here, although I agree with some commentators. You can comment on the topic of the war here https://youtu.be/MI9_AQYNOVA

Docks ty tolerate Rusnya, Rusnya continue to drive in.
      Now shopping center in Kremenchutsі.

    • B. R. P.

I'm saying. Here, a BAN is needed for ailments with political schizophrenia.

      • Andrei

Learn to rethink the politics of terrorism. Russia is a country-terrorist. Tomorrow, that rocket will fly to your homes, they will walk on the streets, in the mall, just in the house, but you still stay “out of the country”.
Well, well, maybe not in Ukraine, right?

        • B. R. P.

And you come to Kharkiv, you will play. Himself a rocket, maybe only on the Internet bachiv, asshole.

          • Andrei

Seriously, on the Internet? Vvazhaєsh, that Kiev region didn’t fire missiles? Well, good.
Asshole yaks skorochennya because of your nickname, chi just drove like that at school?

            • B. R. P.

Asshole - tse animals before you and such yak ti. I do not play the fool, scho you do not understand. In Kiev, that region of the rockets, they were flying, but it doesn’t mean that they were able to do it themselves. New hovaeshsya behind the backs of others. What's up to my ghost. I wrote to you, a guide to Kharkov, sleep with the terobi, how to know Richter. Here, you were driven to hell.

              • Andrei

This is the rocket that flew to Vasilkiv. If you are from Ukraine, then you must know that there were battles there.

              • Andrei

                There is one more.

              • Andrei

But looking straight ahead at Bucha-Gostomel-Irpin from the window of my booth, if the Russians were given a pid tail.
So what are you saying about those that I live and live on the Internet, asshole?
                Photos from 2014-2015
                Dorechi, shot on Sony A100+70-210/4.
Can you show me more photos from Makariva? Chi from Borodyanka? Chi from Yasnogorodka, about the yak, it’s not enough to tell in ZMI.
“Not understanding” - Ukrainian “not understanding”. Your call is not for anyone, it’s bigger, it sounds like the word “asshole”. Well, no luck, let's not focus on anyone's respect.

        • Oleg

Sometimes it seems to me that this war was invented to entertain armchair experts. Andryusch get up from the couch already

          • Andrei

I sometimes wonder what the Russians came up with, so that they didn’t know how to spell “to” and how to be Komi correctly.

            • Victor

It is because of such clowns as Andrei that the stereotype continues to live in the minds of many Russians about the aggressiveness of the fraternal people.

Although for the most part this is not the case.

              • Jury

Victor, what lives in the heads of the scattered people - they put a dick in their heads .... lo, nightingale droppings, Simonyan and other schizophrenics. And many of these scattered people, having heard a lot of propaganda, came to our country on February 24, broke the lives of millions and took it away from tens of thousands of people. They came when we were still sleeping, started bombing us and impudently lying that we were bombing ourselves. With all your desire, you can’t even imagine what horror your scattered people have done in Ukraine and continue to do now. Why am I doing all this? Probably, to the fact that there is no fraternal people and never will be. With this war, you crossed out everything, literally everything.

              • Gregor_S

                .Yuri
                +1

              • Andrei

Yuriy, here they put in a lot of food for them, if they wanted to, they put in for them.
The Russian liberal opposition, as they call it so, is already strongly revolted by the so-called “authority”? How many times have you ever read some of them during the war in Ukraine? In them, the position itself is the same as in the case of a large number of victors and rodions - “mirumir”, “miprotiyni”. So I am for peace in the whole world. The difference is in the fact that we want Russia (well, Crimean B.R.P.), and the stench to sit and check for the king for the time being is more good. For in front of the evil king, on the knees, there are not enough trochs, it is possible and with a humic kick on the head, but in front of the good one, they are standing on the right ..

              • Andrei

Your task is to sit evenly today, so that there is no scoliosis, and the checks will not change you for the time being. I’ll get ahead of myself, it won’t be soon, because we still need to fight among the Buryats and Tuvans, feed the Africans (the richest continent, as it appeared), because of hunger to swell, unite the EU and NATO and even more small rights. So check it out. Baghano is quiet. If you need help, then I will write you in great letters, okay?

            • Oleg

              I am not Russian

              • Andrei

                Why is he so illiterate?

          • Victor

Andryusha does not want to get up from the couch, he prefers to drink on the Internet, which neighbors (all without exception, of course) are inferior, well, nothing, let him drink. This will not change the total entropy of the system in any way.

            • Andrei

Vityunya, in you is there an idol for a new tsar? Why would you be better off standing on your knees?
And what do you want Andryusha - 140 million “susіdіv” simply did not exist. Axis so. Zvechora bully-zranku is dumb. It’s impossible to change the axis of the system’s entropy, for everything can be vouchsafed to lighten the light.
The photo is not mine, but on the corners of the frame everything is good for a smartphone.

              • Victor

See a psychiatrist, Andryusha. If he doesn't help you, he will at least try.

I'll end this conversation, good luck.

              • Andrei

Vityunya, you forgot to say “ku”.
Be healthy (extremely, no, don't be).

  • B. R. P.

    Yuri +1.

Hello, can you tell me the Canon Speedlite 580EX flash is suitable for this camera?

    • Gregor_S

Chukchi is not a reader, Chukchi is a writer of comments

      • an256

Gregor_S, your answer is not entirely clear, you did not read the question, but immediately began to write a comment? I’ll ask knowledgeable people, the Canon Speedlite 580EX focus assistant will work with a Canon RP camera, if not, what kind of flash, preferably not very expensive, is this camera fully compatible, thanks.

        • Jea reth

My Canon 580EX II on my RP works without any problems, fully compatible. Only the red focus assist illumination does not work - instead, the flash makes a series of trial puffs, as it used to be on cropped DSLRs without auxiliary illumination lamps.

  • Eugene

Hello, tell me, please, with the choice of camera. Now I’m shooting on the old Canon 550d, at 50 mm from 1.4 and even more often on a whale, or I rent a faster zoom (I like the wide angle more). I shoot portraits more often, less often subjects and couples/families. For an update, I am considering either bush rp or bush fuji xs-10. I’m not afraid to stay on the crop, but I can’t decide on the optics park in both options, because by inheritance I can only have fifty dollars left, and then I will have to take an adapter for both options. And the budget is also limited, it is desirable to get into 110 thousand rubles.

In general, I understand that everything will be better than the old man 550d, but these Canons or Fuji are already dreaming, I can’t decide

    • Arkady Shapoval

Full frame is a breath of fresh air. I would look at RP (or used Sony a7m2, a7r2)

      • Eugene

And what is a decent zoom for a full frame that is better than a whale, but not at the price of the carcass itself?

        • Dmitry Kostin

24-105/4L IS : EF version 24 or 105 via EF-RF adapter or native RF4-XNUMX/XNUMXL IS

Well, comrades, and panove (and where without you?), how are the shadows from the rabbis stretching there? After all, every professional inspired by a sofa knows that the main thing is how shadows stretch at the camera. And the rest is not important. And the rest is beyond the understanding of a real, homegrown technodrocher who passed dozens of cameras and lenses through his hands, but to hell with at least one noteworthy photo that he took. ))
Normal camera. Allowing, among other things, to earn money. Proof of this is the person from the Photo Weekdays channel. Perfectly manages with this camera and even took another one of the same. Not for dynamic scenes, perhaps. But allowing you to get interesting photos. You just need to have an idea and hands to bring it to life.
And hello to the real representatives of the titular nation. )))

  • Eugene

I bought a Xiaomi Poco phone at a price of 20k rubles as an alternative to my phone.

I don’t understand why the damn phone adequately films the sky and the earth, but a camera worth 1200 euros has the sky overexposed and the earth underexposed???

Or am I clumsy and pushing the wrong buttons?

    • Rodion

The phone turns on HDR on the fly, but in the camera you need to press a button for this.

    • Arkady Shapoval

Yes, a camera for 1200 means that you will also spend 1200 on a lens, 1200 on photography courses and 1200 on photo processing software. On the phone, all this is averaged and already “built in”

    • Human

and, in general, it’s a myth that the camera takes better pictures than your phone, the photographer takes better pictures than your phone, and the camera takes worse pictures. And what tools a photographer uses to get a good photo is, in principle, his own business.
