An important update for Adobe Lightroom Classic. Note from reader Radozhiva

Material on Adobe Lightroom Classic specially for Radozhiva prepared Alexander Onishchenko (facebook)... If it makes it easier for someone, then it may be of an advertising nature.

Lightroom 11

Lightroom 11

Dear lightroom and lightroom workers, great news for you!

Adobe updated Lightroom Classic to version 11 (Photoshop also updated to version 23). Today I publish a preliminary review of new functions, written based on the materials of the article (Andrew S. Gibson). After a while I will publish my own detailed reviews on the issues raised.

I recently started be published on the Radozhiva website, I plan to do this on an ongoing basis. Therefore, I want to briefly introduce myself to the local audience.

I, Alexander Onishchenko, 15 years ago became interested in digital photography. I was equally interested in shooting and processing issues, and after a few years I began to conduct master classes on this topic. He started in Moscow (now, for obvious reasons, Moscow has disappeared), then in Kiev. At the same time he published profile articles in LiveJournal.

Developed and teach the author's online course “Work effectively in Adobe Lightroom from scratch“. Follow the link for a detailed program of the course, as well as information on how to enroll in it and how much it costs. The next group will start in November. When at least one student is added there, the cost of education for all will be reduced to a minimum.

Come, I will be glad to everyone! Is it difficult to decide like this? Maybe they can help you reviews of my students... And I I calibrate monitors and laptops in Kiev.

Thank you for the attention! Moving on to the main topic - updating Lightroom. The new version includes a major update to the way selections and masks are created, as well as several minor updates that add new functionality.

Changes to the local correction tools have been expected for a long time. They will take your work in Lightroom to the next level. Making selections will become much easier and faster.

New to Lightroom Classic # 1: masking panel.

Adobe redesigned the toolbar below the Histogram panel, replacing the Graduated Filter, Radial Filter, and Adjustment Brush icons with a single Masking icon:

Fig. 03

Fig. 03

Clicking on it opens a new panel “Masks” (fig. 04). Here you will see all the masks made earlier:

Fig. 04

Fig. 04

Hover over the mask to see the overlay displayed in the photo. For example, in Fig. 05 you can see the mask made with the adjustment brush. Another good news: it is now easier to change the overlay color so that it is easier to see (Figure 05, highlight color changed to green):

Fig. 05

Fig. 05

To create a new mask, click the “Create New Mask” button:

Fig. 06

Fig. 06

You now have eight masking options, including the familiar brush, linear gradient, and radial gradient. The names have changed, but the functions of each tool remain the same.

New tools include “Color Range”, “Luminance Range” and “Depth Range” parameters. These tools also existed in Lightroom Classic v10, but only as an option to change a different mask. Now you can use them as standalone mask creation tools.

Other new tools are “Select Subject” and “Select Sky”. These are artificial intelligence-based tools that make it faster and easier to mask an object or sky.

Let's see how it works. Selecting “Select Subject” in the photo above results in a mask like this:

Fig. 07

Fig. 07

This is much faster and more accurate than the old way of using the Adjustment Brush. You can invert the mask to mask the background, not the object:

Fig. 08

Fig. 08

Selecting the sky with “Select Sky”:

Fig. 09

Fig. 09

And the inverse of this selection:

Fig. 10

Fig. 10

Using any of the eight selection tools, you can add or subtract a new selection to / from an already created one. This helps to highlight only what you need.

How accurate is the disguise?

It depends on the subject. There are times when this doesn't work very well, but in most cases the result is fine. Take a look at this portrait, for example. The “Select Subject” tool is applied:

Fig. 11

Fig. 11

New to Lightroom Classic # 2: new presets.

Adobe has added over 70 Premium Presets to the Develop module. You will find them at the bottom of the Presets panel. Such presets in the 10th version did not cause much delight in me. Let's take a look at the new version.

Fig. 12

Fig. 12

New to Lightroom Classic # 3: improved metadata panel.

Now you can customize the metadata displayed in the “Default” menu in the “Metadata” panel. Make sure the “Default” menu is active, then click the “Customize” button:

Fig. 13

Fig. 13

Now you can choose which metadata will be displayed in the menu by default:

Fig. 14

Fig. 14

New to Lightroom Classic # 4: Faster synchronization in batch development.

Adobe promises significant performance improvements when copying and pasting corrections made to other photos in the "Develop" module. The previews displayed in the Film Strip refresh much faster.

New to Lightroom Classic # 5: two more options for the filter panel in the “Library” module.

Adobe has added two more options under the Metadata section of the filter panel - Month and Day. They help you search for photos by date:

Fig. 15

Fig. 15

Important: catalog update.

When you upgrade to version 11, Lightroom Classic will update the working directory. This always happens when updating a major version (from version 9 to version 10, or from version 10 to version 11, etc.).
You will see this message when you first open Lightroom Classic v11:

Fig. 16

Fig. 16

Lightroom Classic suggests giving the new catalog a name to distinguish it from the old catalogs. I suggest “Lightroom Classic Catalog v11”, but of course you can use any other name.

When the directory update is complete, you will see something like this in its folder:

Fig. 17

Fig. 17

This concludes your preview of Lightroom 11. Good shots to you!

    thank you

in fact, according to the rules, such articles should be marked with the stamp “Published as an advertisement”.

    • Victor

      What are the rules?

      • Oleg Shevchenko

        It is believed that:

“A warning that the text is advertising in nature - respect for the reader. The reader opens the article, sees the mark "As an advertisement" and decides whether to read it or not. The publisher and advertiser showed respect to users and left them the choice. It is much worse when the advertised post does not explicitly warn about it. The publication loses readers when it treats them carelessly. It is not beneficial for either the publication or the advertiser.

In many countries, advertising laws require you to label advertisements appropriately. Failure to mark the advertisement will result in fines and other problems. At the same time, useful materials, even marked as advertising, will interest readers and potential customers of the company. ”

        • Victor

Oleg, I think, your quote is difficult to refer to this post, because its author "advertised" himself in only a few words, in order to get to know the readers, the main block has nothing to do with advertising and is quite useful.
If this little fad touches someone's feelings, you could call it that in a half-joking manner. Fad. But not the whole article.

          • Michael

you probably have vision or math problems? " in a nutshell":
“I, Alexander Onishchenko, became interested in digital photography 15 years ago. The issues of shooting and processing interested me in equal measure, and after a few years I began to conduct master classes on this topic. He started in Moscow (now, for obvious reasons, Moscow has disappeared), then in Kiev. At the same time he published profile articles in LiveJournal.

all of the above - indicated in the most readable part - at the beginning, several types of the author's activities are advertised, including in no place related to the article.

we read the Law of Ukraine:
            https://urst.com.ua/ru/o_reklame/st-9

            3. Informational, copyright or editorial material that draws attention to a specific person or product and which forms or maintains awareness and interest of viewers (listeners, readers) in this person or product, is advertising and must be placed under the heading "Advertising" or "As an advertisement."

Thus, this article directly violates the law of Ukraine on advertising.
It is strange that Arkady violates the Laws of Ukraine on his website and does not consult with lawyers before engaging in other people's advertising, including "jeans" - hidden advertising.

            • Victor

You, in addition to being a practicing photo-theoretician, are also a lawyer with a second virtual education?))

If it makes it easier for you to sleep and digestion improves, I think it would be easy for Arkady to place a small reminder at the beginning of the "ad block", of course, in full accordance with the Law.

              • Michael

Victor, you can be rude, mock or troll - I don’t know which is more appropriate for your level and digestion.
IMHO - the citizens of the country must at least respect and comply with the laws of their country.

              • Victor

The main thing is that there are no more questions with your level;)

            • Sergei

              And then there's Adobe ads.

          • Dmitriy

Quite often I go to "Radozhiva" and still have not noticed such advertisements (There were links to photographic equipment stores that provided Arkady with equipment for review, but I did not notice advertisements in the articles themselves. Or did I miss something?). This site is run by Arkady and his right to post which articles. But, I want to express my personal opinion, if advertising penetrates here, it will be a completely different "Radozhiva", but I would not like this anymore.
I think that Alexander is a very good person and professional in his field and, probably, a good friend / comrade of Arkady.
            But just advertising is EVERYWHERE.

            • Michael

there is nothing wrong with advertising. but you must at least comply with the laws of Ukraine when advertising is placed.

              • Alexander Onishchenko

Mikhail, I am planning to publish here periodically articles on a wide range of photographic processing issues. In a previous publication, I posted an action developed and described in detail by me in free distribution. At the same time, in each publication, to the main text, I will add links to my services. This is, first of all, training. The information is reliable, containing reviews of real people who have already completed my course.

You give the impression of being legally literate. Let me turn to you with a question: how exactly would you advise me to design my articles so that they do not cause such a reaction?

Without general points, there are already enough of them.

            • Alexander Onishchenko

Dmitry, I agree with you. It was a one-off show. Henceforth, in specialized publications there will be at most one link to me and my author's online training course. A kind of "store that provided knowledge": o))

              • Michael

                Alexander, it's simple.
According to the Laws of Ukraine, you must either add "Advertising Rights", or not advertise your businesses in articles. It does not matter at all whether it is one-off or not.
See the link to the Law of Ukraine - everything is very clearly indicated there.

      • Michael

Viktor, according to the Law of Ukraine, is that enough?
Or do you think that the laws of Ukraine should not be observed?

we read the Law of Ukraine:
        https://urst.com.ua/ru/o_reklame/st-9

        3. Informational, copyright or editorial material that draws attention to a specific person or product and which forms or maintains awareness and interest of viewers (listeners, readers) in this person or product, is advertising and must be placed under the heading "Advertising" or "As an advertisement."

        • Sergei

You communicate on the com domain, it has nothing to do with Ukraine, do not carry a blizzard, you with your verbalism and tediousness to the com.ua domain or just ua, do not listen to this sofa lawyer, otherwise he will inflict a bunch of bullshit on you here, ikspurds have spread like dogs not cut, listen to everyone, the listening room will break. It is necessary to carry nonsense about the legislation of Ukraine on this site, and about the type of law-abiding citizens, even if they are not disgraced, go to the PrivatBank website or on the Rosette dictate your rules.

          • Michael

Sergey, judging by the rudeness and distorted words, do you have a severe form of dyslexia?
It is unlikely that they will help you here, you need to see a doctor.
And Radozhiva's site is registered in the zone of Ukraine, and all the Laws of Ukraine in full apply to it.
            Alas and ah)))

        • Joe

Why do you think that the legislation of Ukraine should be applied to the articles on this site?

The article says that the “Select Subject” method does not always work well, and it does. But mistakes are rare and easy to fix.

The screenshot shows the automatic selection of the girl, and the inset shows a fragment of her shoulder at a scale of 100%. The shoulder almost merges with the clothing of the person standing behind, however, Lightroom does a great job.

    • Victor

Did these tools appear in the latest version of lr?

And in fsh, respectively, should be present?

If so, then a good incentive to upgrade the system to windows10 +

      • Alexander Onishchenko

They appeared in sync in Lightroom 11 and Photoshop 23.
        Yes, the incentive is good.

  • BB

Does this version of LR work offline, or only when connected to Adobe servers?

    • Alexander Onishchenko

It works for me, incl. and without internet.

  • Vitaly

Yeah ... Arkady, unfortunately, ran out of steam. And this was my favorite resource. Apparently it became not interesting to write, the so-called burnout. But after such content, the desire to go here discourages very much, which is very upsetting, I repeat once again, I was very impressed by this resource. Now the desire to write has disappeared, because as soon as the announcements. Moreover, Rodion has not yet lost his fuse, for which many thanks to Rodion. And so, that's it. The resource is dead. You can throw stones at me, but nothing good appears here anymore. Once again, this WAS the best photo resource.

    • Arkady Shapoval

I've been hearing this for years, but the train is moving

      • Vitaly

Yes, I don't mind, I understand, professional burnout, tired of writing “to nowhere”, it's better to think about yourself. I am not reproachful, I understand everything, but such articles discourage coming here at least once a week, even for announcements. Disgusting. Arkady, I have the best opinion of you. I wouldn't even have enough fuse for a third of yours. To you "respect and respect", as they say in slang. Only I would not like to see this.

        • Arkady Shapoval

No problem. I did not expect that Alexander's note would cause such a storm of emotions.
The previous review from the reader seemed to be quite lamp-based and the users were even very interested. By the way, tomorrow, November 1, here on Radozhiv there will be a note with autumn photographs of classic, Soviet, lamp 4 different Gelika 50/53/2

          • Vitaly

I will look with great pleasure. From myself, I wish you not to lose your fervor, except for your blog, there is nothing good on the Internet in general. Don't get discouraged, although it is very difficult to do this at the moment. Positive to you in life !!!

            • Arkady Shapoval

              Thank you!

              • Vitaly

Another wish for you. You are now shooting for something, most likely at the BZK. Share information about what you are using now, how convenient it is, as in the quality of ergonomics, ease of use, etc. In general, in the best traditions of previous years. Take time. Here people will be delighted.

    • Kirill

Right now, I don't see an alternative to joyfulness - the photo club - for me there is no activity there, maved - there are also not many dialogues. I tried to find where the photographers were hiding, but I could not find (((ten years ago there was a lot more activity and a lot of interesting things could be read somewhere, maybe I have gained experience now and the topic has already become. Good and health to everyone!)

      • Arkady Shapoval

:) I was blocked at the Sony Club the other day, and there is more or less a good audience at the club photo.
But I must note that our photo forums are much worse than Western ones and the people are more aggressive.

        • Kirill

Everything, it's great with you - and attracting new faces will be a second wind))) with the purchase of the d610 I decided to try capture one instead of lightroom (before that I only showed it in it since 2013) and how glad I was with the new tools, speed and color! I wonder how many pros are still working in it in the presence of captcha

          • Arkady Shapoval

Rather, it is a matter of habit. With experience and over time, you can get used to anything. I use c1 purely for piece photos, but in general, for piece photos, I like the universal harvester in the form of classic photoshop more. Besides, LR is also used to it. At the same time, I probably have all the native converters for most popular systems and I also have to learn to work with all of them.

            • Kirill

For me, as an amateur who simply develops and practically does not retouch photos - the captcha just delighted with the ability to apply profiles from canon cameras to pictures with nikon, working with masks and layers. It is not clear why Adobe has deprived this tool of Lightroom.

              • Alexander Onishchenko

In principle, LR also allows Canon profiles to be applied to Nikon RAWs, but such profiles are not easy to make. It seems that there was a branch on Photo.ru, in which there was such a skilled worker. I have a Canon D1x profile from there, which I apply to the frames from my Nikon D3. The results are sometimes super simple, sometimes out of hand.

True, if you master LR well, then there is practically no need for such tricks.

          • Alexander Onishchenko

I came across information that in the world about 70% of the pros use converters from adobe (LR + ACR).
A good example of a photographer who, with excellent results, does not waste time searching for the grail among converters and works at ACR - Mike Reifman. Check out his work. (https://ru.35photo.pro/reyfman).

I tried a lot of different converters in due time, settled on LR. From time to time I try, the same C1, but the desire to switch never arose.

        • Kirill

At the photo club, the branches on the existing technique are read from beginning to end - my technique is no longer new (d610, sigma 85 1.4, tampon 24 70 2.8 sp di, 35 1.8dx) and communication goes between photographers for whom this is a craft. Also, the topic of strobe is interesting - but there is no life there either (((

  • Kirill

The first message here, I've been looking for a long time, I started when I didn't have a camera yet (I'm just an amateur, 2 months ago I decided to add to the d7000 to finally buy the d610). A lot of interesting information for both the pros and the amateur. In general, I am glad to anyone kipish))) - and even more so to a new person in the open spaces of joy, who will share his experience. Even with the background of advertising (I myself think that money cannot buy brains). In any case, I will be happy to read both the material and the comments) thanks everyone)

    • Arkady Shapoval

in 2020, I got really sooooo many reviews, the reason for this is lockdowns and cooperation with professional sales. This year is less, as urgent matters have appeared, which are still spinning. But a lot of work was done on the site. This is not always noticeable, for example, as the publication of an article or review.

  • Sergei

    #unpleasant post

  • Igor

I left for Capture One a long time ago.

  • Eugene

    Thanks!! .. interesting infa!

  • Alessandro

Thanks to Alexander Onishchenko for this brief overview of the innovations of the 11th version of Lr and for advertising his pedagogical services (and sneezing at the pesky would-be lawyers who mutter to photographers about some laws! (The person, apparently, was mistaken with the address)). Thanks to Arkady for providing the platform, because software reviews enrich the site's topics. I'll add my own ad as well. Been using Lr 11 for a week now, featuring a top-notch master m0nkrus co-authored with Adobe. Everything that is needed works there, and that which is superfluous does not work (is missing). My experiments with the camera and Lr 10 can be seen at: Facebook, Alexander Kurpatenkov. (Oh! This is definitely on the rights of self-promotion!) All health and good luck!

  • Sandro

To the author Many thanks for the article.
As a bonus, I read the comments of the "lawyer" and his opponents :)))
