Panasonic Lumix S1R

Panasonic Lumix S1R

The S1R was announced 1 February 2019... Together with the S1R, the model was presented at the same time. S1... These two models were the first digital full-frame mirrorless cameras from Panasonic.

I used a Panasonic Lumix S1R for a short time, I had a camera with a nice lens. Panasonic LUMIX S PRO 1: 2.8 / 70-200mm OIS Certified by LEICA... In the lens overview, you can also find the original RAW / JPEG from the camera. The camera used was practically new, with a range of about 2-3 thousand frames (I added a thousand more myself). During my work, I came across the following:

  1. All full-frame mirrorless cameras Panasonic Lumix S1, Panasonic Lumix S1R, Panasonic Lumix S1H, Panasonic Lumix S5 do not have phase focus sensors and focus solely on contrast. Panasonic implements this type of focusing well with its proprietary DFD technology, which is also used on the Micro 4/3 system, but it still has its limitations and problems. I ran into the fact that during focusing, the camera creates many additional focus adjustments, performs focus beating. This is very annoying. Sometimes the 'beating' goes beyond the bounds of reason. UPDATE: only in 2023 the blade acquired phase focusing sensors in models Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II и Panasonic Lumix DC-S5 II x.
  2. Focus grip is terrible. I am not satisfied with a single drop. I got a lot of focus errors while working (tried different focusing methods and functions). Eye / face detection works well. On this, one could say goodbye to the camera and never think about buying it again. But they say that new firmware partially improves the situation.
  3. I really liked the overall design and grip of the Lumix S1R. One of the few modern cameras in which I was completely satisfied with the size of the body and the grip. True, the controls are made 'under one hand', besides, the camera has a rather complicated menu (the owners of some Sony ILCE cameras will understand me).
  4. The Lumix S1R uses a gigantic battery. It feels like it was pulled out of the laptop and inserted into the camera.
  5. During RAW+JPEG high-speed continuous shooting, a situation occurred several times that after the buffer was full, the camera completely hung. She stopped responding to any manipulations until the buffer was completely cleared. It's good that the received frames were still saved on the memory card. I used my verified SanDisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s 32 GB SDHC V30 I U3 C10 memory card. Camera firmware V1.7 (considered stable). The first iteration of cameras almost always has hidden problems that are revealed over time by a large number of users and refined in subsequent models. This has already happened with Sony A7 -> A7M2, Nikon Z7 -> Z7M2, etc.
  6. It should be noted that the Panasonic Lumix S1R uses a 47 MP sensor. Most likely, the same sensor is in the heart of the Leica SL2 and Leica Q2 cameras. And I believe that this is one of the strongest sides Panasonic Lumix S1R. For relatively little money you can touch the magic of the Leica image... In fact, Leica has never approved the use of sensors from its top-tier cameras to other manufacturers. Apparently alliance between Leica, Panasonic and Sigma forced to reconsider traditions. Moreover, Panasonic and Leica have been cooperating for a long time both in the development of lenses and in the development of cameras (remember at least Leica Digilux 3 2006, which was a copy of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-L1).
  7. The rest of the specs are similar to other modern full-frame mirrorless cameras: good EVI, built-in image stabilization, wide video capabilities, etc. These functions have already become familiar and do not cause any admiration or surprise.

    Beautiful camera

    • Elhotag

I also think she is very beautiful but ... AF spoils everything

  • in

It's like Sony a7p (first), only in contrast! But Sonya 2012, Panasonic is clearly sleeping

  • B. R. P.

With such af ... for such dengi ... to the chickens to laugh.

  • Victor

One well-known fan of Olympus (I think those who are in the subject will understand who I am about) - on the contrary, with focusing on c1p, everything is cool, but with a firmware update, it's generally good. So much for brand engagement.

  • Alex

touch the magic - great formulation! )
in fact, in most cases, the "magic" is a matter of algorithms, not a sensor. which is most likely based on Sony technology.

    • Alex

the sensor is not sony but Israeli jazz.

      • Ari

But this is a controversial issue. Somewhere in the mid-tenths Sony turned an ugly trick that thwarted the exit of the "thumbnails" from Nikon. At the last moment they terminated the contract for the supply of matrices, and the patriarch got a lot of money. Panasonic also had difficulties. the latter bought 49% of the innovative Israeli firm Tower Jazz, which, according to rumors, made a High End Sensor for Lake Kew, as well as for the first version of the M10. Then (this is already reliable) the alliance opened 2 factories for the production of conductors in Japan and one more, I think in Taiwan. Then, I think, my aunt backed down because Panasonic submitted its share in 2019 to a Taiwanese partner. In fact, the matrix manufacturer is not so important as the work of programmers in conjunction with colorists. As an example, the same Nikon and Pentax work much better with the same matrices as the manufacturer of these. And in general it is a different business.

        • Alex

there was a disassembly of the cameras. this is a jazz matrix, the same as that of a watering can.

  • Vsevolod

I touched the "magic" in the form of D-lux 7, and realized that Nikon's "soapy shit" is nicer to me. I would gladly give up this practically new “magic” along with a bunch of cool native chips for reasonable money.

    • Ari

You bought it in the heat of the moment. The D-Luxe series reworked inexpensive Panasonic with small matrices. You paid for the red circle, alas. They do not have much in common with the real Leikam. From the German brand they got only a design studio.

      • Ari

By the way, the 7-ka T109 is far from the worst option, rather the top one - this is a redesign of the LX100 II, which, as I've heard, is a very decent camera, with a ton of high technologies on board and excellent, for the format, optics just from Lake.

  • Konstantin

I thought a normal autofocus was delivered to a full frame, but everything is the same as on a microscope ... I have a Lumix GX80. Autofocus is specific there. He focuses quickly and clearly enough, it is not a problem to catch a child running. But keeping in focus, following the movement of a person and adjusting focus quickly is not about him. Pointing, focusing, taking a picture - there is a minimum of marriage. And the 4K video is gorgeous with stabilization. They would have somewhere to get phase sensors - everything would be great.

  • Arthur

For a very long time I looked closely at the S series Lumix, I took it for a test, it was just fine, and my favorite sigma lenses were a bonus, but autofocus is really terrible, you can forget about active reporting, I think the scenario of its use is a studio, unhurried shooting. As soon as they make autofocus of the level of modern bzk, I will immediately go

    • Alex

      you're right.
Panasonic is not good for reporting. absolutely.
for the rest it is very good, AF is much better than 6D or Mark 2, for example.
The problem of phase-detection AF on the sensor - the deterioration of the picture quality, has been discussed many times.
Or - a picture like a Panasonic watering can, OR - a super smart FAF ..

Competitors are not doing better. Sony has problems with color rendition. The canons P5 and P6 have lubrication problems due to the shutter and problems with the IBIS. There are also questions about color.

There is no ideal yet. Buttons are a masterpiece too!

      • Arkady Shapoval

I still consider the most balanced CZK now - Sony a7 III. The rest - either for something specific, or have bias in some of their strengths or weaknesses

        • Alex

yes, this dormouse is very good as a wagon.

        • Konstantin

And for video capabilities, which one would be better? So I look at the characteristics - sigma fp is good for everyone (there is 12-bit video and in raw, immediately to sd-disks!) But alas, only 24 frames of 4k are recorded ...
And the Panasonic s1H has a cosmic price and it weighs a kiloton ...
Others write video less or require an external recorder for video output ...
For 4.2.2 10-12bit 60p from full frame for low light conditions, what will be the most profitable for the money and are there any such options at all?

          • Alex

            i would recommend either R6 or S5
both solutions are good, with their own pros and cons.

          • Alex

if you need to keep within a reasonable budget and moderate the Wishlist ...

      • LoliFromFutanari

Sorry for the weird question, but how do you compare autofocus to an amateur DSLR like 550d?

        • Michael

AF on the erk did not test, on the S5 the AF is more accurate than the Canon 5D Mark 4 and than the Nikon D750 when taking photos.

  • German

    Arkady, thanks for the notes!
An interesting zoom in the S-20-60 mm family has not seen analogs in other systems.
I wonder what the picture quality is?

    • Arkady Shapoval

Canon has had a similar Canon EF 22–55 / 4–5.6 USM for a very long time. Everything new is a slightly modernized old one. All modern lenses of famous brands are designed for conventional 50-100 MP sensors and are almost always very good by default.

    • Alex

The S-20-60 mm is great and has received many awards for picture quality.
in the whale goes for a ridiculous $ 300.
