In this review, I will refer to the Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.8 S lens as Nikon 50 / 1.8Z.

In short

Nikon 50 / 1.8Z is an excellent fast prime for full frame mirrorless cameras. One of the sharpest autofocus fifty dollars.

Compared to the previous line of SLR lenses, which included Nikon 50 / 1.8G, Nikon 50 / 1.4G и Nikon 58 / 1.4G, the new Nikon 50 / 1.8Z mirrorless has significantly increased open-aperture resolution across the entire field of the frame, and also greatly improved the situation with chromatic aberrations.

The obvious drawbacks are the high cost, strong vignetting at F / 1.8 and the use of F / 1.8 instead of F / 1.4.

A standard spoiler about fifty dollars: the creative potential of such about fifty dollars is difficult to overestimate. It is suitable for a wide range of photographic tasks. Many people just want a fast prime, especially in addition to their stock / kit lens. Aperture F / 1.8 three and a half steps wider f / 6.3 aperture, which is used in 'dark' kit lenses at the long end. In numerical terms, this means that the Nikon 50 / 1.8Z is approximately 12 times brighter whale Nikon Nikkor Z 24-50mm 1: 4-6.3 and whale Nikon Nikkor Z DX 16-50 1: 3.5-6.3 VR, which at 50 mm focal length use a maximum aperture equal to only 1: 6.3. The calculation in the difference in the relative aperture (count the luminosity) is carried out in an elementary way: (6.3 * 6.3) / (1.8 * 1.8) = 12.25.

Assembly

Assembly is carried out only in Thailand... The lens is pleasant and weighty to the touch, its weight is about 400 grams. Nikon 50 / 1.8Z uses small 62mm filters.

Outwardly, this is a rather large fifty dollars, in size it even resembles giant HD PENTAX-D FA * 1: 1.4 50mm SDM AW DFA * и Tokina Opera 50mm F1.4FF.

The focusing ring is metal, wide. The lens barrel is very well made.

There is a bayonet mount mark on the body and a mark for quick attachment of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood HB-90, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood is large enough. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the focusing ring is slightly lost. The hood has a grooved ring that makes it easier to manipulate.

The diaphragm consists of 9 blades; at all aperture values, a fairly round aperture is obtained.

Overall build quality is at a high level.

Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.8 S is a rugged lens and it has bayonet mount rubber.

Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm 1: 1.8 S

Focus and aperture control

To focus, the lens uses a special stepper focus motor STM (STepping Motor).

During autofocus, the motor performs its work quite quietly, but there is still noise.

It's important: There is noise from the electromagnetic diaphragm drive.

It's important: during aperture change, the aperture blades close in jerks, with a characteristic beat (close / open a little more than necessary, and then return to the required value).

It's important: The iris cannot be closed smoothly, which is important for video recording. For example, with Viltrox 56 / 1.4 AF a very smooth iris control can be achieved.

The autofocus speed of the lens is fast, but not lightning fast, nevertheless closer to average than very fast. The focusing speed is sufficient for comfortable work in most photographic tasks. I expected a much higher focusing speed, perhaps the speed depends a little on the camera used and the firmware of the lens itself, as well as the camera settings. In the Nikon Z menu (most likely other similar cameras), you can set the autofocus speed for shooting video (setting g4).

On a Nikon Z camera with autofocus, I didn't have any particular problems. Eye / face detection works well.

The focusing ring is made of metal (it still looks like plastic to the touch). When the extreme positions are reached, the ring does not abut, but continues to rotate freely. Manual aiming is quite convenient.

It's important: The lens uses an electronic focusing ring. With a sharp / fast rotation of the focusing ring just 45 degrees, you can change the focusing distance from MDF to infinity or vice versa. With a smooth / slow rotation of the focusing ring, the transition from MDF to infinity can take several turns of the focusing ring. You get used to this state of affairs quickly and intuitively.

Lens has internal focus, the front lens remains stationary during focusing. Optical design and focusing are designed to avoid loss of image quality at different focusing distances. You can use all kinds of filters without any problems.

The minimum focusing distance is 40 cm, and the maximum zoom ratio is 1: 6.7, which is quite good for a fifty-dollar camera.

There is a lens housing focus mode switch 'A - M' (auto focus / manual focus). In 'A' mode, the lens supports continuous manual focus control Nikon M / A.

It's important: The focus ring is programmable (is a control ring). On a Nikon Z camera, it can be assigned to the following functions:

  1. Focus mode (M / A)
  2. Diaphragm
  3. Correction exposure
  4. ISO sensitivity
  5. no

It's important: The control ring changes aperture, ISO or compensation very dramatically exposure... Rotating a small angle immediately leads to very drastic changes in the selected parameters. For example, if you turn the control ring lightly, the ISO value can fly from 100 to 2000 units. To smoothly adjust the selected parameters, turn the control ring very, very smoothly and carefully. It makes you nervous and uncomfortable. Perhaps this will be corrected in the subsequent firmware of the camera.

Nikon 50 / 1.8Z has a very weak and almost imperceptible 'Focus Breathing' effect (changes in the angle of view during focusing). Nikon Z is a great solution for video shooting.

Focus Shift (focus shift, changing focus distance due to iris)

The lens transmits the distance to the subject in the camera and is Nikon D-lens equivalent... Focus distance transmission has a positive effect on metering performance, especially during flash operation.

Image quality

Nikon 50 / 1.8Z is a very sharp and contrast lens with low distortion. The only major drawback is the perceptible vignetting. At F / 1.8 in the center of the frame, the picture is just wonderful and sags very little in the corners and edges.

Sharpness

  • in the center of the frame at F / 1.8 in terms of resolution, the lens is very good, with closing the aperture to F / 2.8, the sharpness slightly increases, after which it practically does not change to F / 9-F / 11
  • there is a slight drop in sharpness towards the edges of the frame at F / 1.8, but even at the edges and corners of the image it shows good sharpness already at F / 1.8
  • good / excellent resolution in angles on covered apertures after f / 2.8
  • very low coma

Distortion

  • very weak barrel distortion is present
  • the overall level of distortion is at a level typical for such high-quality lenses
  • the nature of distortion is unified, easily corrected in the editor

Vignetting

  • strong vignetting at F / 1.8 (at first I even thought it was a color shift)
  • vignetting is enhanced with focus towards infinity
  • vignetting disappears almost completely at values after F / 4
  • vignetting is easily fixable in the editor

Aberration

  • chromatic aberration very well corrected, even at the edges and corners of the image
  • there is a slight spherochromatism, which almost completely disappears when aperture is set to F / 2.8

Rest

  • the lens can catch a small amount of backlight glare and a slight loss of contrast
  • you can get the effect of an 18-ray star
  • in many scenes, the lens can create nice bokeh
  • at the edges and corners of the frame, the discs of confusion are lemon-shaped (cat's eyes)
  • due to the use of aspherics, sometimes characteristic concentric bulbous circles-grooves can be traced on the discs of confusion

For Nikon 50 / 1.8Z there is a lens profile in popular RAW converters, which makes it easier to automatically correct some distortions.

My experience

In general, the Nikon 50 / 1.8Z is similar to Carl Zeiss Sonnar FE 1.8 / 55 ZA T * (Sony SEL55F18Z) and may well compete with it in terms of the quality of the output image. Let me remind you that Sonnar FE 1.8 / 55 ZA T * is one of the sharpest such XNUMX-ruble autofocus lenses in existence.

It's a little strange that there are fifty and about fifty rubles for the Nikon Z mount with F / 0.95, F / 1.2, F / 1.8, but there is no such widespread set as 50 / 1.4. The influence of the Canon R system seems to be felt here.

A quality fifty is a very important lens in the life of many photographers. The Nikon 50 / 1.8Z is optically very good, perhaps its picture does not have some kind of mesmerizing charm, but technically the lens shows excellent image quality.

Nikon 50 / 1.8Z is noticeably better Nikon 50 / 1.4G, especially around the periphery of the frame.

By topic I advise you to look to the section about everything 'autofocus fifty rubles for Nikon'.

Results

Nikon 50 / 1.8Z is very good. The fifty is a very important lens in the bag of many photographers. With the new Nikon Z mount, Nikon has taken 50 / 1.8 class XNUMXs to a whole new level of optical performance. However, with the Nikon FTZ adapter, the lenses Nikon 50 / 1.8G и Nikon 50 / 1.4G for many photo tasks, they still remain relevant solutions.

13 main advantages of Nikon 50 / 1.8Z:

  1. professional lens Nikon Nikkor S-line series
  2. the optical scheme uses 2 ED and 3 ASP elements
  3. internal focusing, support for M / A mode
  4. focus mode switch
  5. programmable control / focus ring
  6. very weak Focus Breathing effect
  7. MDF is only 40 centimeters (better than many fifty dollars)
  8. nine aperture blades
  9. protected case (also with a rubber bayonet seal)
  10. quality assembly
  11. included hood
  12. excellent resolution already from F / 1.8 and across the entire field of the frame
  13. very low level of chromatic aberration (both transverse and longitudinal)

13 major disadvantages of the Nikon 50 / 1.8Z:

  1. rather high price tag (about $ 500 for Nikon 50 / 1.8Z, for example, against $ 200 for Nikon 50 / 1.8G)
  2. large enough
  3. F / 1.8 is used (for example, in Nikon 50 / 1.4G used f / 1.4, while lenses have a similar cost)
  4. focusing speed is not very high (maybe the speed depends a little on the camera and settings)
  5. rather large weight (400 grams with a tail for the Nikon 50 / 1.8Z versus 280 grams for Nikon 50 / 1.4G)
  6. no built-in image stabilizer (e.g. Tamron 45 / 1.8 VC he is)
  7. poor implementation of a programmable control ring (the ring changes parameters in jerks)
  8. the beating of the diaphragm during its change (the petals have an additional 'jerky' stroke)
  9. there is no possibility of smooth adjustment of the diaphragm (for example, as in Viltrox 56 / 1.4 AF)
  10. slight noise from the focusing motor and electromagnetic diaphragm drive
  11. no scale for focusing distances, depth of field, marks for working in the infrared spectrum (for Nikon 50 / 1.2Z there is an information display and an additional control ring)
  12. MADE IN THAILAND inscriptions on the lens barrel and hood spoil the psychological impression of the Nikkor S series lens
  13. strong vignetting at F / 1.8

  • Rodion

Unlike the Chinese, Nikon did not make another planar + booster. Here, rather, the opposite is true. A wide-angle attachment and a field corrector were attached to a well-visible planar (most likely, it is negative). In principle, a similar approach was used by many other manufacturers in order to squeeze everything out of the old scheme.

  • Vlad

A question about autofocus: is it SWM or STM? The plate says both. Tested a similar 35 / 1.8Z in a store, it feels more like a ring ultrasonic motor

    • Arkady Shapoval

      STM only

When comparing forehead to forehead, the Zeta fifty dollar gives out the picture lighter
their colleagues. This gives grounds to assert that poltos is closer to 1.4,
than to 1.8. Based on the situation that the line of fixes from Nikon is marked as
f1.2 f1.8 f2.8 (well, exotic in the style of “look as you can” f0.95), choose
not much of anything. Personally, I am very pleased with both this polto and his
    35mm and 85mm brothers. I'm only missing 20mm, but it's not time yet ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

      It's still a fair 1.8 in exposure.

      • Alex

with such a wild vignette, he cannot be honest about the exposure in the open))

        • Arkady Shapoval

          And yet it is 1.8

  • UstasFritZZZ

After watching the examples, I wanted to write that the picture reminded me very much of the Carl Zeiss Sonnar FE 1.8 / 55 ZA T *, and you already indicated this in the review. Nikon was able to make a worthy fifty kopeck piece of the new generation!

Compared to the Tokina Opera 50 mm f / 1.4, what would you take on the Nikon z7?

    • Arkady Shapoval

I would prefer 1.4, albeit with chromatic. Dimensions don't really bother me. But the question of how Tokina will work with FTZ is unknown to me. Personally, I would try the Sigma Art 50 / 1.4 in a used condition. with FTZ.

      • Dim

Do you think that the likelihood that Tokina or Sigma - Nikon will block autofocus with the next firmware of the carcass or in the next model is vanishingly small?

I'm not talking about the likelihood of blocking, but about the quality of autofocus with the native FTZ adapter. Some lenses do not work with it at all, some do not give af, and some do not allow aperture control, with some af is lost. How well Tokina will work with him - I don't know, you need to look, look for information.

In fact, there is exactly one stop between 0.95, 1.2 and 1.8. So there is nothing to be surprised at. It used to be clumsy, but now it's okay.

      Actually no))

      one stop is sqrt (2)

I can say that wine can be smartly sharp at 1.8, and it doesn’t change much, even if it’s ugly..
I’ll say this - even earlier, you troch nailed 1.8G to increase the sharpness - then it’s not necessary. 1.8 here already sharp here like G version here on f4.
    ale…
The new Z lens has introduced a handwriting .. character .. xs yak nazivatitse. Vіn too technically perfect.
And that sharpness is not always necessary, in a portrait it’s a bit too much. The picture became more dry.
Maybe I haven’t dealt with him enough yet, but first of all, I didn’t have a wow. As soon as you win 1.8G (or 1.4G) via the ftz adapter, and you take photos exclusively .. then I would say that there is no great sensation to replace the Z version with the Z version. And if you really want to - it would be great to take yoga on the cob for a test. I think the focus is metal here, and the bayonet part is also metal. The autofocus motor is a little cold in a quiet environment, the sound of the motor is not lost on the video recording. Maybe someday I'll die in Z 50mm 1.8S, but for now the chemistry has not become)

the aperture can be curved and curved smoothly on the video, so it can be programmed on the ring
