Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM

In short

The YN 35 / 2S is the second lens from Yongnuo (Ynlens) for Sony mirrorless cameras with a full-frame sensor and Sony E mount (the first was YN 85 / 1.8S).

The YN 35 / 2S is a medium wide angle lens for full frame mirrorless cameras. It has fast internal autofocus and is very quiet thanks to the focusing motor. Optically good enough, in the center of the frame is sharp already at F / 2 (without any reservations), only perceptible chromatic aberration make themselves felt.

YN 35 / 2S is lightweight and compact enough. The YN 35 / 2S is designed to compete with the original lens Sony FE 35mm F / 1.8 and inexpensive Samyang 35 / 1.8... Price YN 35 / 2S very low and is on the level of darker solutions from third-party manufacturers such as Samyang 35 / 2.8 и Tamron 35 / 2.8 Di III

History

The lens was officially announced October 23 2020.

YN 35 / 2S is second lens from Yongnuo for full frame mirrorless system Sony with Sony E mount (Sony FE). The first was YN 85 / 1.8S, submitted in August 2020.

True, Yongnuo has already dealt with the Sony E mount - yet in april xnumx year was announced lens Ynlens YN50mm F1.8S DA DSM for cropped Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras.

Very important: YN 35 / 2S has nothing to do with lenses Yongnuo 35mm 1: 2 (for Nikon F mount SLR cameras) and Yongnuo 35mm 1: 2 for DSLR cameras for Canon EF mount. YN 35 / 2S belongs to the new line of Yongnuo lenses Ynlens and is built on a completely different optical scheme.

UPDATED: in July 2021 was announced lens Yongnuo Ynlens YN35mm F2R DF DSM for Canon cameras with RF mount.

In general, the YN 35 / 2S is an alternative to the original Sony FE 35mm F / 1.8... Now on the market there are about 10 different autofocus high-aperture lenses with a focal length of 35 mm for Sony E mount. The YN 35 / 2S has one indisputable advantage over other similar models - it is very cheap.

Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM

Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM

Assembly

The lens came to the review completely new.

The small box contained a warranty card, instructions in Chinese and English, a quality control card, a desiccant, bags, a hood and the lens itself with front and back covers. The covers are made of dense plastic. In the box, the lens is secured with two durable foam clips. The box itself is initially sealed in a protective film.

'YnLens 35mm' lettering on lens barrel engraved.

YN 35 / 2S has metal mount. Stated that microprocessor contacts gilded... The focusing ring is wide, rubberized. The lens feels good in the hands. On the side of the rear lens there is a light-cutting hood that prevents excess flare and light scattering. There is no protective rubber seal for the bayonet.

The YN 35 / 2S weighs just under 300 grams. The light weight matches perfectly with the lightweight Sony NEX / Alpha ILCE cameras.

On heavily covered apertures, the aperture has the shape of an irregular heptagon. The diaphragm consists of 7 blades. The diaphragm has a small lag. Some time elapses between pressing the shutter button and closing the aperture to F / 16 (minimum value, maximum aperture blades travel). It takes the same amount of time to open it from F / 16 to F / 2. Due to the peculiarities of Sony cameras, in the vast majority of cases, this lag does not affect the usability of the lens in any way. The diaphragm mechanism makes a little noise during operation.

There is a bayonet mount mark on the body and a mark for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a plastic hood LH-54T, which must be fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. The hood can be set in transport mode with the reverse side, but in this position, access to the focusing ring is almost completely lost. It's important: To fix the hood (until a characteristic click), or to remove it, you need to apply a sufficiently large force. It may even seem like it could damage the lens this way, but it is not.

The lens has a connector on its body USB TYPE C for connection to a computer (see the corresponding section below in the text). The port is closed with a tight rubber plug.

The lens barrel has programmable Fn button, which by default serves to stop autofocus. But on some cameras this button can be reprogrammed for different tasks. On some cameras, it may not work at all. For example, on my Sony a3500 it does not work, but on sony a7 III or other similar cameras, it can be programmed for a very large and varied number of tasks (Menu -> Custom operations -> tab 8/9 -> Custom keys -> Focus lock button).

The lens design is reminiscent of modern autofocus lenses from Samyang (similar shapes, red edging).

Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM

Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM

Focusing

For focusing, the YN 35 / 2S uses stepper focus motor DSM (Digital Stapping Motor). The location and structure of the motor can be see in my announcement of this lens... Auto focus should work with all Sony E / FE mount cameras.

The focusing speed is high, quite comfortable for work. On camera Sony a7r II I didn't have much focusing problems. After the lens loses accurate focusing, refocusing is performed quickly enough. Focusing on the face and eyes on sony a7 III works perfect.

It's important: in difficult shooting conditions, as well as when shooting dynamic scenes, the focusing quality with the YN 35 / 2S may be noticeably worse than with similar original lenses, such as Sony FE 35mm F / 1.8... Even in simple shooting conditions, the AF tenacity with the YN 35 / 2S will be very dependent on the camera used. Perhaps over time, new lens firmware will improve this situation.

It's important: on camera Sony a3500 the quality of the autofocus is very poor, the lens often does not want to focus or focuses incorrectly, in some modes the focusing behaves strangely (constant focus beats or strong front focus). Updating the firmware to the most recent version has yielded no results. Perhaps in the future, new firmware will correct the situation. In this case, the lenses Yongnuo 50mm 1: 1.8 DA DSM и Yongnuo 85mm 1: 1.8 DF DSM they behaved well on the same camera. It is reliably known that YN 35 / 2S works without problems on cameras Sony a7IIsony a7 III, Sony a7r II, Sony a5100, Sony a6300.

Auto focus very quiet... When shooting a video using autofocus and the built-in microphone in the camera, the resulting video noise from the built-in focusing motor is not audible at all.

Lens uses electronic focus ring... The focusing ring is rubberized, wide, in manual focusing mode it rotates by approximately 360 degrees. When extreme positions are reached, the ring does not abut, but continues to rotate. Manual focus is enough conveniently... The focus ring rotates easily. I did not observe any lag (lag) when changing the direction of rotation. The focus ring makes a faint sound of two plastic parts rubbing during manual focusing. The electronic focusing ring is implemented well, responds more to the angle of rotation than to the speed of its rotation.

On the case there is a focus mode switch MF / AF.

During auto focus focus ring remains stationary, however, it can be freely rotated without any effect on focusing (if the normal AF mode 'Autofocus' is enabled in the camera menu, not 'MF' or 'DMF'). During manual focusing, a scale of approximate focusing distances appears on the display of some cameras.

The lens has internal focusing, the front and rear lenses remain stationary during focusing. It is possible to use various filters without any problems.

The closest focusing distance is 35 cm, while the maximum magnification for close-up photography is 1: 7.7, which is the usual value for such a lens.

'Focus Breathing' effect (changes in viewing angle during focusing) small and almost invisible.

There are no useful marks on the focusing distance, depth of field, or anything else on the lens.

Focus shift (shift-focus) was not noticed during operation and testing.

Firmware Upgrade

There is a USB port on the lens housing of the YN 35 / 2S with which you can update the lens software (firmware / firmware). This feature first appeared in Yongnuo 100mm 1: 2 и Yongnuo 40 / 2.8.

For YN 35 / 2S, you need to use a utility that immediately carries a new firmware.

The functionality of the service utility for the YN 35 / 2S, which is responsible for working with the lens, is very scarce. You can only view the current firmware version and update it to a new one. I found this utility for YN 35 / 2S here. There is a utility version only for the latest Windows operating systems.

The lens uses the common USB 2.0 TYPE C port for connection (many mobile phones use this one). The package does not include a USB cable. To connect, I used a USB cable for my android phone and updated the firmware without any problems. The procedure took less than 10 seconds.

A firmware update, most likely, allows you to improve the compatibility of the lens with new cameras, improve the auto focus, eliminates some other errors. Too bad that no way to roll back (restore) an older version of the firmware.

Important: To update the lens firmware (software):

  • Turn off the camera, remove the battery from it, detach the lens
  • Launch the program YN35mm F2.0S DF DSM FM UPDATER
  • Attach the lens to the computer using a USB cable. If everything went well, the program will automatically detect the connected lens
  • Click [Start] to start the update. Wait for the update to finish
  • Disconnect cable
  • Attach the lens to the camera
  • Insert the battery into the camera
  • Turn on the camera
Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM

Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM

Image quality

The YN 35 / 2S easily handles an Exmor CMOS 20-megapixel APS-C sensor located in the heart of the camera Sony α3500 (ILCE-3500)... The pixel density is higher than that of Sony a7r II or a7r III... 42 MP sensor Sony a7r II everything is OK as well.

Optically, this is a fairly good lens, of the obvious shortcomings - only chromatic aberration, sagging sharpness in the far corners of the frame when used on the Full Frame sensor.

Sharpness

  • good sharpness at an open aperture in the center of the frame, F / 2 in the center of the frame is fully 'working'
  • very good resolution in the center of the frame is achieved at f / 2.8-f / 4
  • there is a noticeable drop in sharpness in the far corners of the frame
  • resolution in the corners of the frame reaches a good level only at closed apertures in the area of f / 8
  • low coma, even at F / 2
  • the lens is optimized more for working at medium to long focusing distances. Detail sags a little at close focusing distances

Distortion

  • distortion moderate, pincushion
  • the nature of distortion is unified, easily corrected in the editor
  • it is difficult to notice distortion in the pictures

Vignetting

  • vignetting is most pronounced on F / 2 and focusing on infinity
  • vignetting decreases with focus towards MDF
  • vignetting almost disappears at values after f / 4

Aberration

  • the lens creates a sufficiently large number of chromatic aberrations, both longitudinal and transverse
  • there is a noticeable frigging (the color of the contrasting areas of confusion is green and purple), the frigging is significantly reduced with aperture
  • most chromatic aberrations are observed on the frame periphery
  • chromatic aberration - the weakest side of the lens

Rest

  • the effect of the rays of the star is poorly expressed (14 rays)
  • Blur disks are uneven on tightly covered diaphragms
  • the lens works very well in backlight, only in the most difficult conditions you can get flare that spoils the picture
  • the discs of confusion have bulbous concentric circles due to the aspherical element

There is currently no profile for this lens in popular RAW converters.

My experience

YN 35 / 2S is another very interesting offer from Yongnuo. I really like these inexpensive lenses, which for a very modest amount can give 80-90% of the capabilities of the original brand solutions.

I have been working with this lens for a month and a half, it tolerates various loads and temperature changes well. The YN 35 / 2S is no different from modern high-quality similar lenses.

The YN 35 / 2S can be an alternative not only for full-frame similar lenses, but also for cropped autofocus lenses for Sony E mount, such as Sony 35 / 1.8 OSS, Viltrox 33 / 1.4, Sigma 30 / 1.4 Contemporary, Sigma 30 / 2.8 EXSigma 30 / 2.8 Art и Zeiss Touit 32 / 1.8.

I am glad that the YN 35 / 2S uses a modern optical design with internal focusing and a large number of special optical elements.

Important: YN 35 / 2S has many times fewer minor and minor problems than Yongnuo 35mm 1: 2 for DSLR cameras with Nikon F mount and Yongnuo 35mm 1: 2 for DSLR cameras with Canon EF mount. I shot almost all Yongnuo lenses (more than 20 models at the time of this review) and I can confidently say that the new mirrorless solutions from Yongnuo are head and shoulders above their older mirrorless counterparts.

All three lenses from Yongnuo for Sony E mount (50 / 1.8S DA DSM, 35 / 2S DF DSM, 85 / 1.8S DF DSM) I think they are very successful and I promise them good sales.

Video review

My video review on Yongnuo YnLens YN35mm F2S DF DSM can be look at Yutube at this link.

Results

YN 35 / 2S is a lens with a very good price / quality ratio. It can serve as a good alternative to other similar lenses. The image quality is generally quite high. Some of the shortcomings of autofocus with some cameras should be resolved with the new firmware.

10 main advantages:

  1. low cost (about 220 dollars, cheapest autofocus lens for Sony FE)
  2. light weight, compact dimensions (filter diameter only 52 mm)
  3. good build, metal bayonet, bayonet hood included
  4. focusing stepper motor, fast enough and quiet
  5. internal focusing, fixed focus ring during auto focus
  6. electronic focus ring, continuous manual focus control, AF / MF switch, very weak Focus Breathing effect
  7. USB port for firmware upgrade
  8. programmable FN button (its functions depend on the camera used)
  9. four special elements in the optical scheme (low dispersion, aspherical and 2 high refractive index)
  10. good sharpness in the center of the frame already with F / 2 (really not causing any questions)

10 main disadvantages:

  1. the hood is fixed and removed with great effort
  2. on heavily covered apertures, the aperture has the shape of an irregular heptagon
  3. small diaphragm lag during closing and opening
  4. diaphragm noise
  5. there are no additional tags (depth of field, focusing distance, etc.)
  6. the lens is not protected (there is not even a rubber mount for the mount)
  7. software options for working with the lens via the USB port are very limited
  8. problems with autofocus on some cameras, perhaps a new firmware will help solve this situation
  9. lack of data about the lens in modern cameras and converters, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of distortion
  10. tangible chromatic aberration

  • Victor

The novelty from YN is almost traditionally good, while the Sony a7rII's “on-camera JPEG” is (traditionally) nonexistent.

In any case, thanks for both))

    • Evgeniy

and in which cameras is he traditionally good

        I suspect sho in Fuji)

      • Victor

Many, but obviously not this one.

  • Oleg

Looking at the column in the upper left corner, you can see that the number of Chinese manufacturers exceeds the number of other manufacturers of optics and many of them give out good quality.

  • B. R. P.

Eh, they should still master pancakes ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

      They tried on a SLR camera - look Yongnuo 40mm 1: 2.8

    • Victor

Everything is ahead - they will master both pancakes and autofocus (I'm not only talking about yn now)

Where there is demand, there is also an offer, the Chinese have it easy.

  • koba

This is the third generation of its own product line, usually good or excellent products start in the fourth generation, so this lens is one of the first signs ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

recently here on the site someone already wrote that from the third generation

  • notapic

There is also a Tamron 35 / 1.8, but it differs in the presence of an optical stub (for the ZK, I'm not sure about the FE)

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is a mirrored lens that is not available for Sony E mirrorless cameras.

    • Sergei

      For FE, Tamron only has 35 / 2.8 and it didn't impress me, unlike 35 / 1.8

  • Makunochimaster

    Cats are simply gorgeous

  • kukurund

Interestingly, the aberrations are stronger / weaker than on the cropped sony 35 / 1,8 OSS? If weaker, we must take. There will be one lens and ff and crop, sorry for the current stub is not present for the video, but it helps a little.

Tell me if autofocus will work with the Sony A6000. and when compared with Sigma 30 1.4, which one is faster??

    • Arkady Shapoval

will, the speed is approximately equal, take unambiguously sigma, or wiltrox 33/1.4

      • Andrei

I tried Sigma 30 1.4, the picture is loose at 1.4-1.8, there are a lot of blurs, I don’t see sharpness, compared to Sony 35 1.8, it’s just soap, but there is more blur, so I’m leaning towards yongnuo 35 f.2, it won’t work, I’ll return to Sonya

    thank you

Less sharp compared to the 28-70 kit at 35mm FR and aperture 4.
On low-contrast objects such as a solid wall or a fleecy carpet without a pattern, it focuses frankly badly. In good light and contrasting objects, focusing is fast and accurate.

Nothing like this. Keith is much worse in sharpness. You may have gotten a bad copy.

Review quote: “Auto focus is very quiet. When shooting video using auto focus and the microphone built into the camera, noise from the built-in focus motor is not audible at all in the final video.”
