Autofocus Speed Boosters for Sony E, FujiFilm X, Canon M, Nikon Z and Micro 4/3

Speed booster

Speed Booster. Image taken here.

The essence of the Speed Booster is very simple - it works like teleconverter, just the opposite. Speed boosters decrease the focal length and decrease the lens f-number (increase aperture).

This works well if the lens used is sized for a larger sensor size than the one that will be paired with the speed booster. Most often, this bundle is used for full-frame lenses on cameras with a cropped sensor. This is due to the range of coverage of a particular lens.

Mainly on the market there are speed boosters for mounting DSLR full-frame lenses with Canon EF mount on mirrorless cropped cameras with Sony E, FujiFilm X, Canon M, Nikon Z and Micro 4/3 mounts. Canon EF mount is very different from other mounts for full-frame SLR systems, such as Nikon F, Sony A or Pentax K. It is lenses under Canon EF that are easiest to use with speed boosters, and it is under the Canon EF mount that almost all autofocus speed boosters available on market.

There are much more manual speed boosters (without the possibility of automatic focusing) and they are much more diverse. There are even speed boosters from medium and large format to full frame or cameras with an APS-C sensor or smaller. Some manual speed boosters are equipped with a microprocessor for correct transmission EXIF into the camera, some know how to control the aperture. But the most interesting thing is the fully automatic speed boosters, which make your work comfortable and enjoyable.

Below I have prepared a list autofocus speed boosters, that is, those speed boosters that support automatic focusing, automatic iris control and the operation of the image stabilizer built into the lens:

  1. felttrox Canon EF -> Sony E 0.71X
  2. felttrox Canon EF -> Fujifilm X 0.71X
  3. felttrox Canon EF -> Canon EF-M 0.71X
  4. felttrox Canon EF -> Nikon Z 0.71X
  5. felttrox Canon EF -> Micro 4/3 0.71X
  6. Metabones Canon EF -> Micro 4/3 0.58X
  7. Metabones Canon EF -> Micro 4/3 0.64X
  8. Metabones Canon EF -> Micro 4/3 0.71X
  9. Metabones Canon EF -> Sony E 0.71X
  10. Complete Canon EF -> Canon EF-M 0.71X
  11. Complete Canon EF -> Micro 4/3 0.71X
  12. Complete Canon EF -> Fujifilm X 0.71X

Viltrox may be marketed under other names such as YEWOOP Canon EF -> Micro 4/3 0.71X or Hair Canon EF -> Micro 4/3 0.71X.

Work example

When using a full-frame reflex autofocus lens Canon EF 50 / 1.4 USM with speed booster Viltrox Canon EF -> Sony E 0.71X and camera Sony a6500 with APS-C sensor and crop factor Kf = 1.5X, an analog of a lens with a focal length of 35.5 mm (50 * 0.71) and a maximum relative aperture of 1: 0.994 (1.4 * 0.71) is obtained. Aperture, expressed in T-stops, will be really that huge. Wherein EGF (equivalent focal length) of such a bundle will be 53.25 mm (50 * 0.71 * 1.5). If you round it up a little, then the viewing angles of the lens Canon EF 50 / 1.4 USM on a full-frame camera will match the viewing angles of the same lens with a speed booster Viltrox 0.71X on a cropped camera. The equivalent aperture in the understanding of the depth of field will be equal to F / 1.491 (1.4 * 0.71 * 1.5).

Speed booster

Speed Booster, basic working principle. increase.

Sometimes speed boosters are also used for full-frame lenses on a full-frame camera. For example, some cameras can shoot high-resolution video (4k or 8k) or high frame rates (120 frames per second or more) just using the center of their sensor. For this feature, the speed booster Metabones Canon EF -> Canon RF 0.71X was created.

With the help of a speed booster, you can even get an autofocus lens with an aperture F / 0.58... How to do it is described in this note.

  • Still

    Eeeeehhh…. The fate of the villain. And what should we do with the miserable Nikon F? How to live? ))

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Go to the Nikon Z side. Or use manual speed boosters with Nikon F, for example, the same Viltrox Nikon F -> Sony E.
      But Nikon F -> Nikon Z speed boosters have never been seen.

      • Vladimir

        Appeared, but not cheap.

      • Vladimir

        Fringer NF-FX AF

        • Arkady Shapoval

          This is an adapter (adapter) with support for autofocus, but not a speed booster, which are discussed in this note

          • Vladimir

            Well yes. Speedboosters non-autofocus nikon-mirrorless appeared a long time ago. Now we should expect autofocus

        • Eugene

          Ia tak poneal cito speedbooster Autofokus s Nikon na micro 4/3 netu?

          • Arkady Shapoval

            no

    • Andrei

      Manual.

  • Lynx

    and where is the drawdown? it is impossible to push additional lenses into the optical system “to improve the parameters” without losing other parameters.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      As in teleconverters, of course, in speed boosters there is a drop in some optical indicators

    • Seladir

      Based on the reviews that I studied, we can conclude that the image in the center of the frame practically does not lose optically, but the corners of the frame are strongly chromated, plus other aberrations.
      That is not a panacea, but for some genres it is quite applicable.

      • Eugene

        On the dpr forums, there was a large article with examples of different ef lenses: the essence is that the angles float the more, the shorter the fr. From half a band and longer it is already necessary to search for 100%. And to be honest, the speedbooster is interesting only in terms of portraits and bakeshki, but here on the corners do not care.

  • UstasFritZZZ

    It's easier to buy a full frame and not suffer shit, IMHO

    • Victor

      I will support.

      The speedbooster will certainly give higher working ISOs, reduce the depth of field by adding soapiness to the picture)) of course, but it won't get rid of other features of small matrices.

      • Seladir

        By "higher working ISO" you mean half the shutter speed at the same exposure?
        IMHO, of the real negative features of small matrices, only an earlier diffraction limit, and even then many modern fullframes are already weighed down with small pixels, and people buy them and even somehow remove them.

        • Victor

          Yes, and not only that. More light will fall on the matrix, which means that even with the same isos, the noise will be less noticeable. After all, it is well known that (for example) 1600 ISO in good lighting and the same value in poor lighting are two big differences.
          Of the features of small matrices - not only the diffraction limit, I would even say, this is the least of the “evils”, hardly noticeable in real shooting, except that it plays a role in macro.

          • Seladir

            It's just that, for example, some people think that 18MP on a crop is already a small pixel and evil. But a 45MP full frame will have exactly the same pixel size, and this is, for example, the Canon R5, which will be adopted by many professional photographers in the near future.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      it's not sports

    • Seladir

      For portrait painters, yes.
      I, for example, am an amateur who mainly shoots macro and animals. I don't really need a full frame by itself, and in general the transition price is very high, since there is already a set of excellent, but cropped optics. Instead, I want to swap my cropped Canon DSLR for a Canon M50 mirrorless camera. And here the speedbooster lays down perfectly: I want to connect my EF optics through a regular adapter, and if I need more aperture or viewing angle, or I want to reveal the side effect of the same Helios as it is without a crop, then I wound the speedbooster and go.

    • Eugene

      At the new prices, I agree - ff new from the store there are not expensive options, but we will not yet look at the prices of ff lenses, especially ultra-wide and super telephoto lenses.

    • Dim

      I have a Nikon D700 with a bunch of fixes and a Sony A5000. I took the Viltrox booster and, for example, Nikkor 50 1,8 turns into a light 30 with something. What is suffering? This is a very convenient and convenient offer. We take two carcasses and one set of lenses for the trip.

      • Victor

        The suffering is that you will not get a picture of q700go on a5000 with any booster. Not to mention the convenience.

        True, this difference will not be important to everyone, it really is.

        • Dim

          I will get more focal lengths and a smaller spare camera. This one is expensive and plus there is no video on the D700. The picture, the color will be different and that's fine. I also have D700, D300, D200, D5200 for the D3300 - and that's it. Yes, the D700 has advantages, especially with the 80-200 2.8, but it is not overwhelming and I would not say that such a bundle is appropriate and safe everywhere. I always take at least two cameras when traveling.

          • Victor

            The picture / color will be different and this is ... great?)))

            Ok, no more questions))

            • Dim

              First, I'm not under interrogation, oddly enough. Secondly, I shoot 200-400 GB a year in a total volume for myself and I don't see any need to have heaps of exactly the same photos, I don't have to sell anything - I'm not in the market. I'm not proud of it, just a fact. Each apparatus and lens gives different results and enriches experience and skills i.e. bring joy.

              • Roman

                I agree with you, Dim, mostly those who make portraits for sale, and those who are confused by the standards in equipment and shooting style, advocate for a full frame, APS-C is quite enough for landscape photography.

                I sold my FF Sony A7 because of its size, took the NEX-5t and wear it in my jacket pocket every day, even when I’m not going to shoot, and with this giant I went out once a quarter because circumstances did not always have it, you can damage an expensive camera and optics, and the NEX-5 bought for $ 80 is not a pity and the result is excellent.

      • Arbiter

        “Nikkor 50 1,8 turns into a light 30 with something”
        More precisely, at about 50 kopecks. The crop will multiply the focal point by 1.5, and then the speedbooster will multiply by 0,7, as a result, the focal point will only play a little.

        • Victor

          Not more accurate.

          50 1.8 turns into a light 30-something, no crop changes the real focal length.

  • B. R. P.

    Interesting topic. Nikonk instead of Nikon in the headline. Fix please)

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Fixed

  • Rodion

    And from the medium format, I still have not seen speed boosters for the small format.

    • Eugene

      But from small to medium there is.

    • Tube

      Hello, Rodion, hello to you. I would like to power some things that are not easy and not easy to use telecompressors, if possible.
      I also wanted to install medium-format and large-format (with a frame diagonal of 380 mm) lenses on the matrix of a different crop. Ale vinikli nutrition and all theories on the optical rahunok.
      What am I right to understand, that the telecompressor (speedbooster) always has a positive optical power, and the teleconverter (teleextender) always has a negative one?
      How do I change the size of the image band with the first coefficient of the image, and how do I change the working arm with the same coefficient of the same sign, to show that the booster is standing close to the rear lens? Then in the world of yoga in the distance from the rear lens right up to the cordon, de vine will still suffocate all the images (as in the scheme in the metabounce), the coefficient of change in the working windshield will be reduced?
      On the right, I want to put it through the compressor of the SF CF on APS-C, Aje Robiya Vidrizki Naskilki Great, Shopping Yogo in N times, de-Cohefitsynta Zynnya Zynnya, vin crop matrix і kf. 3, go out), then the working window is still allowed to be placed on a SLR and with a tilt-shift. But I’m not sure about mirror systems of boosters on the market.
      Come out, you need to choose the scheme yourself. And I don’t know the scheme of the first compressor like Metabounce, four-lens, but I don’t know exactly (glass and dimensions). I have no professional knowledge in optics, so I turn to you for help. So, I don’t know why it’s necessary to copy the scheme and how to pierce, even for skin lenses it’s necessary to know the optical power (other indications are unlikely to be recognized).
      I can't
      1) ask the diagram. It’s not for nothing that boosters are not monolens, but I can change my own, without losing the ability to choose what-chi bo, cream of the optical power of the skin lens.
      2) Can't you get a part of the scheme and use it as a booster?
      Zagalom, you really want to put the KF on the crop, but on the right, stand for the roses yourself.
      I applaud you standing, so you can respond to my power supply

      • Rodion

        Booster is a positive system. In my experience, the booster should be fairly well corrected so as not to affect the drawing of the original lens and not degrade its image.
        The change in the working length with the multiplicity of the booster is not connected by a simple ratio, it depends on the design of the booster. In general, the segment decreases, quite strongly.
        Boosters for DSLRs with SF were not made due to the large working length of DSLRs and low demand - there are few cheap optics for SF with a large length, only for Pentacon 6 and Salyut / Kiev-88. A booster with SF will be expensive because its lenses must have a large diameter.
        It is difficult to simplify the booster circuit, because, as I noted above, it must be optically better than the lenses with which it is used. For example, for Triplet 100/2.8 as a booster, even Industar-55 U is more or less suitable - see my article about Triplet-5 100/2.8. But for better optics, this will be a bad option. Naturally, it is unrealistic to develop your own from random lenses with a known optical power)
        In general, you can look for a shooting lens with a short lens block length, ~35+ mm pupil diameter, a focal length of about 150 mm, a large backsegment and the best possible optical quality - this will be a candidate for homemade boosters. It is unlikely that a booster can be made sensible from a part of the lens due to insufficient optical quality.

  • Jea reth

    Here's an interesting question ripe.
    If there are speedboosters that allow you to stick optics from a larger format on cameras with a smaller format while ensuring the same viewing angle, then for the same purposes, you need a teleconverter to install optics from a small frame to a larger one?
    Has anyone tried to install optics from crop to FF through a teleconverter? Purely as an experiment, I understand that this is already a real perversion.

    • Alexey

      There will be no infinity, but you can shoot macro. The EFR will be greater than the nominal FD. The illumination of the matrix will be approximately halved (if you move the lens away so that it covers the entire FF matrix). Those. the aperture ratio will decrease. By the way, the work of the speedbooster, as well as the anti-speedbooster (macro-rings), is due to the fact that the amount of light (photons) entering the matrix per unit time is proportional to the area of the matrix. But they don't believe in it.

      • Eugene

        Physics is not a matter of faith. You are probably on another site.

        • Alexey

          Right. But here is precisely the denial of physics. Probably just not smart enough to understand.

      • Alexey

        (this is another Alexey)
        I asked you a direct and obvious question in that topic, but you never gave an answer to it. so you don't need to write anything about physics.

    • Vladimir

      I tried it (Nikon 18-70 and Kenko 1.5x teleconverter, however, it is for a screwdriver, autofocus does not work) - it really works, there are no black edges, it just turns out a very dark zoom :)

  • Serg

    I wonder why there is no nikon autofocus lens booster on e-mount?

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Because of the screwdriver and diaphragm hammer, it is much more difficult to do this in a compact body

      • Serg

        screwdriver reducer is not difficult, I think to do it, and the drummer is also not particularly difficult :)
        you can even cut it out on your knees if you want.
        something else the problem seems to me

  • Alexander

    Arkady, and readers of the blog, please help me decide on the product.
    I use NEX and Micro4 / 3 systems, there are a bunch of lenses on both of them through adapters, I use them in manual mode, of course.

    The question is: I want to buy a speedbooster that is universal for these two systems.
    Help me decide)
    I plan to order CANON EF to M4 / 3, which I will then install through the adapter ring on the NEX. However, will there be problems associated with the smaller sensor size on the micro, and further vignetting?

    Thank you.

    • Alexander

      I will add that I have not found a transition ring from nex to mikra in nature at all.

      • alexey_laa

        Flange for Sony E | FE = 18 mm, Micro Four Thirds = 19.25 mm. E-mount to MFT adapter must have negative thickness. :) And the speed boosters for APS-C and Micro 4/3 sensors are most likely the same, only a different mount. I myself have a speed booster Nikon - Micro 4/3 Viltrox. On the Viltrox website, Nikon E-mount and Micro 4/3 speed boosters look the same on the Nikon mount side, probably the same design.

        • Alexander

          Alexey, Arkady, thanks for the answers.
          Perhaps I will focus on the booster for the nex, because on the micro it will be according to the EGF nex without the booster) and on the nex - like on the FF.
          Thank you.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      It will not work

  • Sergei

    Are there no spibusiers for Canon crop? For example, to put Jupiter 9 on 650D and give it “almost full frame”? Does this only work with bzk?

    • Oleg

      Not on the mirror, they are only on the bzk. On EF-M please

  • Vyacheslav

    a couple of words from personal - Speed booster kipon baveyes corners noticeably fails ... aperture of 1.4 and higher is not recommended by the manufacturer, the little-known zhongyi speed booster lens turbo II is manual, three times cheaper and much better in corners and in general ...
    and wiltrocks are a waste of money, metabons is good just like autofocus from canon to sony ...
    speed boosters are more compact than conventional adapters, they seem to shorten the working distance and logically increase aperture

    • Vyacheslav

      metabones ultra on nex6 is quite tasty and on an open one with canons 40mm2.8 and 100mm2, aperture really increases, and 20-35 2.8 often misses alas ... fifty dollars 1.8 and 1.4 somehow did not play

  • R'RёS,R ° F "RёR№

    Eh, why haven’t they made an autofocus speed booster Nikon F - MFT yet? Is it difficult? No aperture control, but at least autofocus and stabilization in the lens.
