In short

The REXATAR AUTOMATIC 1: 2.8 f = 100mm is an old manual focus prime designed for film cameras. The review shows the version for Nikon cameras with Nikon F mount PRE AI (NON AI) type. At the same time, this lens was produced in versions for other popular mounts.

The REXATAR AUTOMATIC 1: 2.8 f = 100mm is primarily interesting as a portrait lens, and can also be used as a creative lens wherever a short telephoto is appropriate.

REXATAR AUTOMATIC 1: 2.8 f = 100mm has a compact size, nice design and good sharpness at f / 2.8.

I don't know who and when made this lens (Sun, Tokina, Topcor, Mitake?), Perhaps someone has information on this, be sure to write about it in the comments.

Assembly, control, focus

Lens body made with high quality... The focusing ring has a not very wide rubber anti-slip insert. The focus ring does not slide forward with the lens barrel as it does with some of these lenses.

REXATAR AUTOMATIC 1: 2.8 f = 100mm uses small filters with a diameter of only 52mm.

Focusing ring REXATAR AUTOMATIC 1: 2.8 f = 100mm rotates approximately 270 degrees (3/4 of a full turn). During focusing, the trunk of the lens moves forward, but does not rotate. Focusing is performed by moving the entire lens block. The rotation of the focus ring is smooth and pleasant. Working with the lens is quite pleasant.

On the case there is a focus distance scale, a depth of field scale and a mark for working in the infrared spectrum.

How to use Nikon manual lenses (such as this one without CPU and with manual focus) on any modern Nikon interchangeable lens digital camera described in the section 'manual optics'. About compatibility of old Non AI, Pre-ai lenses can be found here.

Image quality

REXATAR AUTOMATIC 1: 2.8 f = 100mm behaves well in side and backlight, even though the lens uses a simple coating. At the same time, unlike some other old and inexpensive lenses, it does not create a yellow-green color of the image.

Sharpness at F / 2.8 is quite satisfactory, and at F / 4-F / 8 it becomes good. There is also a small amount of chromatic aberration. Slight vignetting at F / 2.8 and minimal distortion.

A trademark registered in the USA in the 60s. The lens was first made for the Beseler Topcon Super D camera. Topcon was apparently the manufacturer.

      Thank you

Very unlikely, but rather almost certainly not.
There are no structural similarities to the lenses that were made (not just branded) by Topcon.

This is some kind of Japanese noname manufacturer of the nth echelon, to which the final distributor glued his brand.

Koba and Aidaho I don't know how exactly I ended up here, but I'm happy to have found your comments. Koba could you please link to or cite your resources?

Aidaho – I've seen you over at DPR (greetings!) – check out my thread (there are links to relevent comparisons scattered there as well) about this Rexatar (and other re-brands). The optics in this family of re-brands are shockingly similar to the Topcors:

Here is Zonnar - he is also in Japan Zonnar. It's hard to screw up this circuit. So this glass is much better in sharpness, apparently, than thin-lens counterparts of the 4/4 or 5/4 class.
In comparison with the 135 / 2.8 lens from the previous review, the best correction of all aberrations is evident, incl. field, this lens.

It seems to me that both externally and in the picture, this lens is very similar to the Kalainar 5H

  • tim

I am 99% sure the glass was ground by Topcon and the rest of the lens was made and assembled by a manufacturer such as Chinon. Topcon supplied glass for the 100mm f2.8 and 75mm f2.8 Bronica Zenzanon lenses in the early 1970s along with lenses for the Horseman large format cameras, so I would think they ground glass for other manufacturers.
