Comments: 17, on the topic: Announcement: Tokina atx-m 33mm F1.4 X

  • Alexander

“The optical design is identical to the Viltrox 33 / 1.4” - this phrase plunged me into painful thoughts ... Is Tokina falling to the level of Viltrox, or is Viltrox already at the level of Tokina? Or, with the same optical design, Tokina has better anti-reflection coating, build quality, etc.? I wonder if there will be a Sony version.

    • Arkady Shapoval

      And Tokina has been using the Viltrox 85 / 1.8 for a long time under the name Tokina atx-m 85mm F1.8 FE. Now it's turn for 23, 33, 56 with f / 1.4.

Directly something of its own the company has long been gone All or updating the old one (as announced on the same day Tokina atx-i 17-35mm F4 FF), or the rebranding of Viltrox, or cooperation with others (as with opera 50mm F1.4 FF). I was doing video about this.

    • Victor

You know, even though the viltrox has never zooms (perhaps still ahead), if you take, for example, such optical "quality" monsters as 28-80, 17-35 or 12-24 (the first in any case), and Seeing what Viltrox is already issuing - it would be more correct to say - “Tokina has finally reached the level of Viltrox” :)

      • Pokemon

“If we take, for example, such monsters of optical“ quality ”as 28-80, 17-35 or 12-24 (the first in any case), and also seeing what Viltrox is already producing - it would be more correct to say“ Tokina has finally reached level Viltrox'a ":)"
Please remind me, when about 28-80 / 2.8 was considered a low-quality lens.
I have both of them - one for Canon and one for Nikon, and my tongue does not turn to scold them, especially in comparison with Sigma.

        • Victor

Approximately when the concept of "tokina glow" appeared. If you dropped the example from your copy of tokina at F / 2.8, and everything turned out well on it, I would be glad for you that you were lucky, and this feature passed by.
As a collector of systems and optics, you probably compared the Nikon version with your native 24-70? You don’t think that it is just 4-5 times more expensive?

Of course, if we mean by quality - build quality, then there are no complaints about the token if the lens is working properly.

          • Arkady Shapoval

new Tokina 24-70 / 2.8 optically good, only focusing is primitive. But all the old 28-70, 28-80 are very specific lenses.

At 2.8, there really is glow on all my Tokins under Nikon and Canon (28-70 and 28-80). Therefore, if you need to shoot something in the open, then for this there is Nikon 35-70 / 2.8D or Nikon 28-70 / 2.8D.
If you choose between Tokin (28-70 / 28-80) and Sigma 24-70 / 2.8 EX DG, then for some moments / plots 2.8 on Tokin will be even more interesting (for shooting nude, for example :)).
In terms of sharpness, if Tokina is in good condition, it will probably be sharper than Sigma 24-70, everything, up to Art. But Sigma has 24-70 / 2.8 before Art, the drawing is different, with a different twist or something .. Optically, to Tokin, except for working on the open, I have no comments.
In terms of build quality, the Nikon version will be more reliable due to the lack of a motor.
The presence of internal focusing and zoom is only a plus - the lens feels monolithic - this is a very pleasant feeling, especially in the cold.
The only drawback (in terms of design) of the lenses of these series is that Tokins should be stored in a dry, warm place. They do not like moisture and begin to "bloom", a similar disease exists in other old high-aperture zooms of other brands.

            • Victor

“Except for work in the open” - that’s why everything fell into place :-)

Why take such a lens if you don't plan to work with an open lens? (Nyushnikov please leave the hall :-))

You see, if I take a tank, I would like to rely on the fact that the tank fires shells, and not glass balls from the Christmas tree))) Otherwise, it is quite possible to lay eyes on the native 24-85G, there the stub arrives as a bonus, and where more compact.
Yes, there is no longer the feeling of a tank, but I can't hammer nails with them anyway, I will tolerate))

              • Pokemon

                To each his own.
I like Tokin, I mostly take them for landscape or street photography.
I recently read that when designing the 28-70 / 28-80, Tokin's engineers counted on the shades of blue to be displayed in their own way.
I try not to take budget zooms with variable aperture and not look at them in principle.
While looking closely at the Tokinovsky 24-70 / 2.8, I have not yet decided on which system. Nikon has a magic 28-70 / 2.8D (wonderful lens!) And I like it so much that I don't want anything else.
Perhaps a little later I will take under Canon.

      • Arkady Shapoval

Tokina basically didn't have fast fixes with 1.4 or 1.8. Only recently have appeared 50 1.4 and 20 2.0. Usually Tokina makes shiriki and telephoto, makriki. They have some really good solutions like 16-28 / 2.8, 70-200 / 4, 14-20 / 2.0, 11-20 / 2.8, 100 / 2.8, etc. But apparently there is no experience in light fixes, so they are looking for third-party developers and manufacturers.

        • Pokemon

"Tokina basically didn't have fast fixes with 1.4 or 1.8"
          This always surprised me.

  • Alexander

Thank you very much, Arkady, colleagues!
You opened my eyes to Viltrox. I have a gap between 16 / 1,4 and 50 / 2,8 on Sony.
There will be a reason to make yourself a gift for the New Year :)

    • Victor

A couple of familiar fujivods are also extremely pleased with the appearance of budget autofocus 56 1.4 and 85 1.8.

If only the reliability does not disappoint, over time, but for now everything is ok.

  • Victor

And what prevents the release of such glasses under Nikon F. There are still enough owners of DSLRs all over the world, and a real full-fledged portrait of an analogue of the 85-ki on Nikon's crop, like 56 1,4, has never been, and will never be (58 1,4g with its price does not count), but, apparently not destiny ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

They won't do it anymore. For example, you won't be able to convert these mirrorless ones to mirrorless ones. There is Sigma 30 for DSLRs 1.4 Art

  • Victor

Maybe they are afraid of competition from the already existing half-tons, for example?

For the same nikon 50 1.4, at least three budget autofocus models (not counting the art, which will be more expensive) - 1.4D, G, and sigma.

And they don't see any particular prospects, perhaps.

    • Victor

Yes, they probably don't see any prospects anymore.
