Brief review of the Canon EOS 80D from reader Radozhiva

Canon EOS 80D review specially for Radozhiva prepared Oleg Taranenko.

Canon EOS 80D

Canon EOS 80D

The camera was released in 2016 to replace the outdated one Canon 70D and has a new 24 megapixel sensor and 45 focus points... The company is positioning the camera as an advanced amateur. As bonuses, the user receives: a dust and moisture resistant polycarbonate resin housing with conductive fiberglass, a pentaprism-based viewfinder with coverage of almost 100% of the frame, an additional monochrome display, the ability to set ISO 1/3 stop, exposure 1/8000 second.

The interface and ergonomics of the camera are very convenient: you have at your disposal both a rotary touchscreen display and a monochrome display that displays all the necessary information and, if necessary, you can turn off the rotary display and save battery life.

Connectors include: slot for SD cards, microphone and headphone jacks, USB 2.0, HDMI and cable release jack. It is worth noting the presence of WI-FI and NFC for connecting to a smartphone.

The camera is very comfortable in the hand. The camera weighs 730 grams. In general, the camera turned out to be quite compact, but weighty, which is convenient when shooting handheld at long exposures and working with heavy lenses.

Canon 80D has 45 focus points, they are all cruciform. 27 points are responsible for working with lenses with aperture from F / 5.6 to F / 8. The center point is a double cross, which is responsible for working with lenses with an aperture smaller than F / 2.8. In Live View mode, the Dual Pixel autofocus system is used, there is face focusing.

The Digic 6 processor is responsible for image processing. The camera can shoot at a speed of 7 frames per second. The shooting buffer is 25 frames in RAW mode. The ISO value is set from 100 to 16.000.

The Canon 80D does a good job shooting at high ISOs, but I wouldn't go above 1600-2000 as I don't like it. noise in the shadows is already quite noticeable, but even at a value of 3200 the picture looks quite decent. In the review, I tried to show examples at various ISO values.

The camera has very modest video capabilities, it shoots video in Full HD format with a frequency of 50-60 frames per second. There is no 4K shooting capability.

Original RAW ('.CR2') photos can be скачать здесь.

Hack and predictor Aviator: The Canon 80D is a well-balanced camera that looks good in 2020 as well. Of the shortcomings, perhaps only modest video capabilities can be noted.

Photos of the camera itself would not hurt to add.

    • Oleg

Unfortunately there is no softbox or flash, so they turned out to be very unfortunate

      • BB

Well, at least to steal from the Internet, and then you read the review, but you have to look at the appearance somewhere else.
        Thank you for the review.

        • Oleg

There were photos if Arkady has the opportunity to insert

  • alexey_laa

Anton Ptushkin spoke about Canon 80D, and especially said that he uses it just for video. it has no problems with autofocus, good colors and the camera is suitable for travel photography. https://youtu.be/8jJgNdi-u5k?t=280

    • Oleg

      4k no

      • Maksim

        It is not always necessary

  • tagir

Been hiking since the 80d for two years. During this time, I have never come across the fact that there are at least some problems with the camera. Never!
I took up to 4,2 thousand shots with two batteries and still a little charge remained.
And on the sea, and in the rain, and in the snow - he did not spare this carcass, he only pasted it over with vinyl film from aliexpress, but this did not save it from scratches.

I don't shoot video at all, so I didn't feel any restrictions in this regard.
very balanced model. changed only because I became a victim of marketing)))

    • Oleg

In fact, the 2016 camera has everything you need for photography, and since that moment nothing fundamentally new has been added. All modern kenon cameras have approximately the same characteristics when shooting at high ISO and dynamic range, so it can be considered as a kind of marker for kenon crop cameras. The innovations affect mainly video capabilities. If you add here the inscription was made in Japan, then this is just a real gift for an amateur

    • Eugene

I'm choosing a camera for hunting small birds. The speed and tenacity of autofocus, DD, and the number of pixels (for cropping during post-processing) are important. Previously I used a Canon eos 7d for this. How will the 80d perform on a photo hunt?

  • Michael

“The ability to install ISO 1/3 stop” - but does anyone have this now? I'm not talking about old people))

    • Oleg

there is no such thing on younger carcasses

      • Novel

In my opinion, they already added this functionality on the 600D. There are only 100-250 and lower rulers left. But, in any case, half a stop or a third of a stop are programmed values. In reality, the amplifiers move one stop forward to a certain value, and then everything in the figure is multiplied by the coefficients. Well, intermediate ones are also digital. As well as programmed 50 and 100 for cameras with a base value of 200.

        • Oleg

yes, on the way there is already, I did not follow much

        • Ivan Shikhalev

Not on the 600D. And not even on the 77D.

          • Oleg

at 800d it seems like it is

            • Novel

It is not clear, in short. Somewhere there, but only in auto mode, Magic Lantern is unlocked, somewhere immediately available. It is necessary to verify each model, but laziness.

              • Ivan Shikhalev

In auto mode, yes, there are intermediate values, but you cannot set them.

              • Novel

Well, in any case, if the aperture and shutter speed really lend themselves to correction by a third of a stop, then there have been a lot of horrors about ISO that it can raise it to a stop by hardware, by an amplifier coefficient, and then lower it by software, by ordinary multiplication, so well it.

          • Michael

There are both there and there

            • Ivan Shikhalev

So I have some wrong 600D and 77D (aperture and shutter speed change by 1/3 stop, exposure compensation too, ISO is not).

              • Michael

Oh yes. There is such a thing with ISO)

        • Michael

          The 450D already had

          • Michael

The 1100D also has it. Apparently, the nuances of our time. I did not hold such devices in my hands (so that only 1/2 foot)))

            • Oleg

at 1100d this is not exactly where the diaphragm is exposed only 1 stop

              • Michael

There is a switch in user preferences. Exactly) Maybe you mean automatic modes?

  • witness

And the prize for the shortest review on Radozhiv today gets - attention, drum roll !!!
Can I do the same for the Canon 90D?)

    • Oleg

Why don't you do. I went through the main characteristics of the camera and showed examples of working on high iso and laid out the raves. Yes, I did not climb into all these buttons because of my unwillingness to rewrite the instructions. And I agree with Arkady that today there are simply no bad cameras and it is difficult to add something to this

    • Oleg

Perhaps I added: the dynamic range of the camera, although inferior to Nikon and Sony cameras, received quite decent ratings even from such a site as dxomark. And it is higher than the full-frame RP and 6d mark2 at low ISO. Write about amateur modes? how often does anyone use them

    • Michael

Do) And with RAW examples. And rewriting an instruction is not an overview. The camera is good, the main thing is laid out, there are examples. The camera does not have any unknown chips, but everyone knows about the rest. So respect to the author

  • Victor

Was the author in a very hurry somewhere?

“Review” would be more correct to call “a small number of photos from the 80s” :)

  • Ivan

    I recognize beautiful Vilnius!

    • Oleg

      Vilnius is beautiful

      • Ivan

It's a shame you didn't capture the view from Gediminas Tower. The panorama of the city is amazing!

  • Bukozik

Another drawback is slow (compared to 40d) autofocus

    • Novel

Seriously? Have you tested the same native Canon lens on two cameras at the same time and the autofocus was slower on the 80D? It is hard to believe. Either your assessment is subjective, or there were different shooting conditions, or a non-native lens was used, also some old one. In general, any next-generation camera in the same lineup focuses at least as well. And here there were four of them.

    • York

      Heresy.

The 40d is a very good machine, but the AF is frankly old compared to the 80d.
In motion - and even more so.

And about the fact that 80d normally focuses in such conditions in which there is no 40d at all, there is no point in talking about it.

  • Dmitriy

“To replace the outdated Canon 70D” yes-aah ...

    • Victor

The author and “80d looks good in 2020 too” :-)

What would he say, curiously, about Canon 40d, 5d or Nikon there d40, d80 :-)))

  • Andrei

What analogue or competitor does Nikon have with this camera?

    • Specialist

      7200

  • Mr. boggy

Sharp on good optics, but in general there is a drawback in the picture - dark areas are blackened, the greens are dark, the contrast is high. Is it because of the small pixel?

    • Oleg

Rather, the profile is such a standard for kenon. Optics: fixes are all 24mp, even the old 50 / 1.8. 24/2.8, 50/1.8,85/1.8 everything is fine. 10-18 is good, I think all STM 24mp optics allow. But 55-250 is2 is no longer there, although it’s good at 1100d
