System selection, polling

For technical reasons, voting is temporarily unavailable. There are only a few statistics.

Choosing a system is tricky. Different systems, cameras, lenses and so on are needed for different tasks. But in general, choosing a base system is a very important step. Choose what you see fit according to your own preferences. This vote does not bear no serious research and is for the most part entertainment... However, I hope that it will be useful for some users. Notethat the survey concerns the system namely for photography (for photos, not videos).

The preferred type of interchangeable lens system for photography

I have not included in the list:

  1. SLR cameras with APS-H sensor. They are few in number, outdated and out of production, for example, Canon EOS-1 D Mark IV
  2. SLR cameras with a non-standard sensor close to APS-C with Kf = 1.74X. They are few and far between, for example, Sigma SD9, Sigma SD10, Sigma SD14, Sigma SD15
  3. SLR cameras system 4/3 with Kf = 2X. They are outdated and discontinued, such as Olympus E-620, Leica Digilux 3 or Panasonic Lumix DMC-L10
  4. mirrorless cameras with APS-H sensor. They are few in number, for example, except Sigma sd quattro h I don’t know others
  5. mirrorless cameras with a long flange distance (like SLR cameras). They are few in number, outdated and out of production, for example, Pentax K-01
  6. mirrorless cameras with a very small sensor. They are outdated and discontinued, such as Nikon 1, Samsung NX-M, Pentax Q
  7. rangefinder cameras with any sensor size. They do not have autofocus, for example Leica M9, Ricoh GXR, Epson R-D1
  8. medium format modular type. These are highly specialized solutions beyond the scope of this vote, such as the Hasselblad H system
  9. separately, I did not highlight DSLR cameras with a translucent mirror (SLT), for example, full-frame Sony a99, Sony α99 II or cropped Sony α77 II, Sony a68... They are closer to classic mirror solutions. All are manufactured exclusively by Sony. Sony SLT has not been developed for a long time and will most likely be completely closed soon

The best full-frame DSLR system for stills?

The best mirrorless full frame system for photography?

choose-3

A little later, I plan to add a selection of cropped systems here.

Sometimes “better, worse, or preferable” can only be a subjective opinion. And the questions “Nikon / Canon / Sony / Pentax / Leica / Panasonic / Sigma?” etc. are quite slippery and toxic by it's nature. If someone considers himself a professional, please share, your experience and try to convey the common truths that are unknown to seeking beginners.

On my own behalf, I will add that the choice of a system / camera is difficult only at the beginning of the path, in the future everything is much easier, and such questions with a choice are not at all important and even ridiculous. That is why some comments from “experts” should be treated with a grain of irony.

Materials on the topic

  1. Full-frame mirrorless systems. List of all cameras and lenses to them. Mirrorless fever, discussion, choice and more
  2. All cropped mirrorless cameras, discussion of systems
  3. Mirrorless crop that has stopped or is stopping its development
  4. Fallen Digital Mirror Systems
  5. JVI or EVI
  6. About mirrorless batteries
  7. Simple and clear medium format
  8. Smartphone Impact
  9. All announcements and news
  10. What's next?

  • Anatoly

In the survey, I focus on color, so Canon and Leica;) And in my life I use Fuji, but they have not yet moved to take a full frame (except for SF) :(

    • ivmulder

They wrote that they will not take a full frame, because from their point of view, a full frame will not give the photographer more gain than their cropped system. Therefore, they focused on only two areas: crop and medium format.

      • Michael

In principle, it is, especially considering the size of the sensor of their "SF"

        • Pokemon

Does the Pentax 645z have a different sensor size?
Both Fuji and Pentax have the same and make them Sony. Nobody makes digital 6x7 or 6x9.

          • Michael

Regarding the film SF (6x4.5 and more) - different, I meant it. Digitizers have a smaller sensor, so introducing a 35 mm system is not a great sense for Fuj.

  • Purely

A very strange vote, it is rather difficult to answer such questions. For example, I have ff canon, before it I used bzk sony a6300 and cropped nikon, how can I answer which of the systems is the best, if I didn’t even use the other ff systems, and they all have their pros and cons, I love the color of the boot, sony / nikon dd, bzk canon now, in my opinion, the best ergonomics, and bzk sony itself has a large park of native optics. Systemic doctors are not needed.

    • Arkady Shapoval

You always have to choose from something, there is always a beginning. Therefore, although such questions do not have a solution, the general background can be traced

      • coroner

Perhaps now things are different with the choice of the first camera for beginners, you can watch reviews and personally feel the carcasses in the salons of technology.
16 (18? - I don't remember) years ago I bought the first czk from my hands without knowing anything about it - just because they offered it)))
        It was d50))
and since then I have overgrown with a bucket of flashes, lenses (just don't ask why, I won't show you my berries on a narrow-gauge xD), and it's too late to rush between systems))

        • Victor

And you don't need to show your berries on a narrow-gauge railway, anyway it will be just a parody of an unsurpassed original;)

        • Novel

          And at least a cat?

        • Novel

In principle, I chose the system and am not going to change it. Because I understand that I will not get anything PRINCIPALLY NEW, and the development of the previously selected system and the purchase of specific glasses will allow me not to rush like a dumbbell from Canon to Nikon to Fujik to Olik, because I did not like the color of the glare on the berry.

If necessary, I'll take pictures with something else - the skills and understanding of the processes allow me to shoot even on the phone. Exposure, shutter speed and ISO are the same everywhere.

          • Victor

It is important to understand in time that changing the technique, by and large, does not improve the quality of the result, only slightly affecting the technical side.

If we take into account what is found on the secondary housing and at what prices, then everything becomes very interesting at all, the level of entrance ticket for obtaining an acceptable result is very low.

            • Novel

But we buy expensive entrance tickets overlooking the narrow gauge railway.

              • Victor

I advise you not to argue with an experienced photographer who has been shooting cats in medium format for 35 years, he knows better from there what and how :-)

              • B. R. P.

Roman, well, admit it, you too ... do you ... love cats?

              • Arkady Shapoval

I also love cats, and what's the big deal :)

              • Novel

As Terry Partchett says Death: "CATS ARE GOOD!"

      • Konstantin

True, because although this is “the average degree in the hospital”, as the doctors joke, if it is 50, then the hospital is on fire)

  • Valery

Now there are Sonya, well, everyone else,

  • THE

Anyway, Nikon is cooler than Kenon (:

    • Arkady Shapoval

      Kindle didn't work, it's too obvious :)

    • UstasFritZZZ

      everyone already knows this))

    • Ivan

Yes! And this video confirms this:
      https://youtu.be/dP-dCrqCDFw

  • Pavel Gorbunov

The main camera is a medium format Fujifilm GFX 50R.
The second ("notebook") - Canon EOS M6.
Fuji likes the size of the matrix, resolution, the absence of an AA filter and a huge number of settings, Canon - color.
Cons: Fuji has size and weight, Canon has no matrix stub.

  • Peter Sh.

As Kenya Rockwell rightly once remarked, the best camera is the one in your hands. Anything else is bullshit, and not really worth the dedicated egg. Empty assumptions and fruitless fantasies.

I use Nikon DSLRs only because I need their certain capabilities that Kenon does not have. But most photographers don't need these features, they don't even know about them. So, there is no difference. Nikons, Kenons, zerkmlki, bzk, crop, ff, etc.

    • Arkady Shapoval

But a beginner always has a question - what? and there is always a need to start somewhere. That is why every day this question sounds - what to take?

      • Peter Sh.

Yes, every day ... Some kind of universal helplessness. When I was a beginner, I didn't have such questions. Probably because the Internet is full of couch experts and dubious bloggers carrying a blizzard, and the newbie no longer knows who to believe and what to think. Everyone has a mess in their heads, but just take and carefully read the training articles just too lazy. Not used to it, sir.

        • Trueash

Not only because of the sofa experts. The producers themselves are interested in selling carcasses, and therefore they create the opinion that, they say, something new and improved is needed for a good photo.

          • Arkady Shapoval

and most importantly - OVER PRICED!

        • Novel

Therefore, you can act on the contrary. If someone is actively praising something, then this person has a lot of time and has nothing to do. And take what he scolds, according to the principle of "Good boots". yyyyy

          • Trueash

            >> And take what he scolds - If there were two models, then this principle would work, but there are a little more of them: D
I don't know how anyone, but I always choose the technique for a VERY long time and meticulously, and I am rarely dissatisfied with the choice. It is possible that others are doing otherwise.
In principle, I don’t give a damn for only two reasons - firstly, sofa experts often do their best to justify the money spent, because they praise what they have (although, most likely, this is a quite suitable technique); at the same time, certain properties of the camera are presented as if without them all that is left is to go and drown in grief. Wah, 20 fps! Do not offer 10 fps, and whoever has 6 is a worthless loser. Second, the photography itself does not just go into the background, but generally somewhere in the unknown distance. Who is Robert Capa? half of his shots are blurry, gaps in the shadows! Horror! Josef Sudek? grain, soap, and finally some kind of gray-brown haze ...
            And so on.
            And so on.

            • Novel

And we again and again return to the same postulate - the level of modern photographic equipment allows solving most problems (and 100% amateur ones) without any problems.

              • Trueash

                >> And again and again we return to the same postulate - the level of modern photographic equipment allows solving most problems (and 100% amateur ones) without any problems - I completely agree. I am a humble amateur, but when they ask me: "Which camera to choose?", I often say: "Yes, any, released after 2012". Outwardly like it? Does it fit well in your hand? does not puncture a hole in your pocket? take it and don't bother

      • Charles

It makes sense IMHO for a beginner to choose a system that most of his friends have, which will make it possible to borrow (and then change) optics, flashes, accessories, seek advice.

        • Novel

Yeah. Here I have some kind of 600D with whale glass. Well, we took a couple of times to use fifty dollars - nooo…. not that. And they are afraid to take the rest or simply do not know how.

        • Molchanov + Yuri

          Totally agree with you.

    • Ivan

That's right, only the egg is not selected, but the eaten one (the one that was eaten).
For me personally, Nikon cameras have a more intuitive menu compared to Canon, as well as an ergonomic arrangement of physical buttons (especially the power switch).

      • Peter + Sh.

So this is not me, this is my illiterate smartphone ...

        • Ivan

          No problems!

  • UstasFritZZZ

I have never shot video with photos, I'm not interested. For a photo, my choice is a full frame of Sony (BZK) and a crop Nikon (mirror)

  • Alexander Rifeev

funny to find out which is better - Canon or Nikon DSLRs? :-))))) professional photographers-reporters take with them to work, for example, photographing VIPs, Canon and Nikon at once ... VIP faces are photographed only by Kenon, and only Nikon take pictures of general types of VIP-parties ...

    • Arkady Shapoval

After all, there are not only pro-photographers, but also amateurs and those who are looking. You have to start somewhere. Not everyone understands that there is no such thing "better or worse". Of course, it's good that such questions do not arise.

      • Novel

You are kindling, Arkady, oh, you are kindling. Smarter than the Pope's recent statements.

  • Konstantin

I have an old Nikon D5100 + 50mm fix, which, as an amateur, was enough for me. But I also wanted to shoot 4K video, since I bought a 65-inch TV set. A fotik for a video without a matrix stub (well, or a sendikam, but you don't want to hang around with it) - money down the drain. I decided to spend money and bought a Sony A6500 + kit + 50mm. It all cost me almost $ 2000. But in fact, I was disappointed very quickly and returned everything to the store after 3 days. Yes, the video is cool, but the autofocus still does not keep up with the child and loses faces in low light. The photo is excellent, detail, 24MP, everything is cool, but there is no direct WOW difference with the D5100.

    As a result, I personally assembled such a kit for myself;

    - D5100 for photos and portraits at any events and for photos in the studio.

    - Panasonic GX80 (kit + 42,5 fix) as a camera for video, travel and just for every day for walking with a child.

    - GoPro + stand for active entertainment, underwater photography and travel.

GX80 with glass cost me $ 700. and the difference in video quality from the A6500 is minimal. The main idea is that you should not look at the reviews and not listen to the imposed opinions of others, but select what you need for your, SPECIFICALLY YOUR, requirements. Full frame, crop, 4/3 it's all unimportant - the main convenience and performance of the specific function you need.

    • Novel

I immediately decided for myself that the maximum that I could shoot a normal one at home was something like a blog with exposed light, a lavalier microphone and some of the STM lenses (well, or 1.4 on the manual, pre-focused). Since I can't afford anything to myself on the street, and the result will certainly not suit me, I don't go into the video at all - this is a separate diocese. The video needs to be mixed. The video needs to be colored. In the video, you need to edit the sound. For everything else, there is a phone, but I will just shoot with a fotik. Well, as a last resort, some general plan from a tripod.

  • Molchanov + Yuri

I've always had Canon and Sony cameras. I am overgrown with lenses and will not change the system. Nevertheless, I think Nikon is the best DSLR. I like what they have been doing for the last 7-10 years more.

    • Novel

I don't know how 7-10 (I liked the course for a small number of megapixels on the sensor), but for the last couple of years they have been methodically dying.

    • Ivan

For the last 10 years Nikon has done a lot of inadequate things. I introduced AF-P lenses, but I only gave firmware for working with them on the latest camera models. The situation is the same with lenses with an electronic diaphragm. The latest DSLRs appear to be the D780 and D6. All others are slowly being archived. Now they are trying to transplant to the Z mount, and their adapter for old lenses looks like a clumsy attempt to maintain the loyalty of the old owners. According to their roadmap, there is no need to wait for lenses on the “mirror”. And there is nothing to say about the DX, the owners were “thrown” as with the Nikon 1 system.

      • Michael

They generally update the firmware only if it is completely locked. They are reluctant (unprofitable) to bring the fleet of previous models, although all the means are provided for this

        • Dim

I always liked Kodak, my wife took Nikon a long time ago when she was not yet a wife. Now on Nikon, Canon has never attracted, it is not specialized or something. I love computers and I also updated the firmware on DSLRs. But the trick of updating them is not completely clear to me. Now I have 5 Nikon DSLRs and have never worried about the firmware. I was very upset when the mirror was thrown back by the first Nikon we bought - D40. Lost as part of my soul.

          • Michael

Exactly. The opportunity to sew was foreseen, but there is nothing to sew. I also liked Kodak as a film very much - the standard)

            • B. R. P.

Kodak is yes. But I preferred Fuji. Filmed a lot on Konica and Agfa.

          • B. R. P.

“As a part of my soul I have lost” I shake my hand in my mind for such an attitude to my technique.

          • US6IBD

The definition smiled: he threw back the mirror. Well done!

      • @ Lex

        Who was thrown, Ivan?)
The fact that Nikon has updated the entire top line over the past 5 years (including adding new ones) Does this mean anything?
There, optics will be natural for a decade, no one was thrown.
Gave a balanced d780. And Mp is not a lot, and you can try new chips.

        • Pokemon

Left on the Titanic: the owners of the poor Nikonovsky 1-k, DX (there are no optics for a crop and the new one almost does not come out, however, Canon has a similar story), they threw the owners of AF-D.
“Gave a balanced q780. And Mp is not much, and you can try new chips. "
An amateur camera in Nikon D7000 housing and at a price of almost D850 ...
          Cool, yeah.
Even Western photographers did not appreciate it, but handed over their old photographic equipment (the same D750) to the storage shed on deshman and took the Z6.

          • B. R. P.

            What about amateur? Ibid 1 \ 8000)))

            • Pokemon

The D7000 also has 1/8000, but that doesn't make it a professional camera.

              • B. R. P.

                You can’t be joking!

  • Alexander Rifeev

example: Kenon 5D m2 and the image from TV - all colors are natural, from TV on Kenon the complexion of the photographed - there are no differences :-)))) ... Nikon 610D is also from TV, but you can immediately see that the color of the faces of those photographed the worst side, not much, really, but there is ... and no settings help ...

    • Peter Sh.

I hasten to remind you, Alexander, before they tell you rude things that the camera was created for shooting a real three-dimensional world. While photographing TV is an extremely exciting activity, there is no doubt.

    • Victor

The settings, of course, help, not to mention the fact that comparing the picture with what is shown on TV is probably an exciting, but rather useless idea.

    • Novel

I understand that beginners have a shortage of models, BUT THAT SO ...

    • Michael

      1. Are there no other colors besides faces?
      2. And take pictures in JPEG only? Development - no?
      3. Are the camera settings only automatic? Do you need manual ones?
Shooting TV is quite specific, so everyone will praise their swamp as well as choose their camera.

  • Victor

Having voted for a Nikon DSLR for a photo, and a Sony mirrorless, but I want to try a Canon 3-4 DSLR, why everything is gut, why ....

  • Ivan Shikhalev

I voted for FF BZK, but I will shoot on a crop DSLR. Because I already have it (and several lenses).

    • Michael

      +
I like it and eat - different things, but you should not be upset))

  • Michael

mirrorless is not interesting waiting for Nikon DF2

  • Alexander Rifeev

“And except for faces ..” :-)))) ... for example, Nikons are always head and shoulders above the Kenons when photographing snow and clouds - all shades of white are great ... but I'm not afraid of rudeness, I'm a famous Internet troll :-))))

    • Michael

Manual BB will save you on Canon)

  • Reiknarr

The choice of a system for a beginner is a thankless and difficult task, I want a good camera for little money, which can take pictures like on the cover of a magazine, shoot video like in a movie and make coffee)

I will say for myself that after trying and rereading about different systems, I liked the Sony / Minolta AF. Just because you like the cameras and optics of this system, it is convenient, pleasant to work with and everything in general, you can of course discuss the topics of color, autofocus and stabilization, but why? It's a matter of taste.

  • Charles

From the nikonistic forum, a real speech in the thread about choosing a system:
“I asked them a direct question - Sony or Nikon. The answer was unambiguous - Canon. "
    :)

    • Victor

"Well, where we do not" :-)

  • Dim

When choosing a system, a beginner should be guided by himself, by his desires. Money for this is needed to have fun, and not to satisfy someone else's psychoses

  • Eugene A

It's pretty hard to say for sure that the money I spent on a Nikon DSLR system over the past 14 years was reasonable.
In fact, most of the work was done at 24-70, well, because it is more convenient in my shooting.
Most of the optics were bought for the soul, so to speak.
It's a pity to sell now for a penny on Avito if you change the system.
FF, except for d 850 and d (3-6), tried everything, and as a result, last year he returned 9 years later to d700, well, it just came up more in color rendering in the right working conditions and that's it. It turns out that the rest of the cameras were bought and not necessary. The coronavirus has temporarily buried the dream of the d850, but I still see a DSLR more convenient for my work than an UPC.

The second system on the shelf is a7III from Sony with a pair of lenses, but I don't like shooting in the studio with a mirrorless (at least for this model) because of the electronic viewfinder. Perhaps out of habit, maybe it's just that the EVF on this camera is not the best. As a result, the UPC is used for home filming and vacation travel.

In the end, like this: for work, a proven strong DSLR, for home filming, a flimsy-looking UPC.

    • Eugene A

And the main thing is that both cameras are currently fully performing their tasks !!!
And for me now it doesn't matter at all what kind of manufacturer's logo they carry.

    • Vadim

I have a very similar situation. We have d300s, 7100, 610, 750, 700 and 800 for two with my wife. All cameras work, all have their own tasks and features. I want to say about the 850, I managed to shoot on it and I said “cool” only about the tilt monitor. The rest, as it were, well, yes, well, but there was no desire to start saving for it. Of everything that Nikon has released in recent years, I was really shocked and impressed, so it burns and hurts, and requires replacement, it is to change the 70-200 2.8 ll to the lll version. The stab is fantastic, af is more confident, it even seemed lighter according to my home tests, but then it turned out that the diaphragm leash on mine was tired and did not open completely)))

      • Eugene A

Vadim, when I compared 35-70, 28-70 and 24-70, it turned out that 35-70 of them are the lightest, and 24-70 without a stub is the darkest!
And on the d850 I liked the color rendering more than the d810. And it’s hardly worth waiting for its replacement, it seems to me.
It was also very interesting to see in the work that the d700 on the ISO 200 gives the same picture as the d750 on the ISO 320 in brightness under the same conditions. Well, yes, d700 is an old man, but my assistant does not use foul language now when converting.
        These are the observations.

        • Dim

I have a Sony a5000 but something was missing. I bought a speed booster from Viltrox - now everything has become familiar - “native” caps on camera lenses from Nikon; 0)

  • Vadim

But for mountain hikes I have a sony 5100 and 5 lenses. All the same, the size gain is very significant. While Nikon held out the bzk from the crop, he had to start a second system.

  • Jea reth

Beginners should not be guided by what someone likes and who thinks what is best. Each swamp praises its own for very specific reasons.
I believe and will continue to believe that the DSLR Canon is the best system for the amateur beginner. Color, autofocus, pulsed light work are not the things a beginner will look at. Understanding these things is a coming experience. And you can do what you need with experience anywhere.
The most important thing in this choice, I consider only one thing - optics. For Canon EF, it was made just dofig, and it all works without reservation on any camera with an EF mount. Unlike Nikon, where you still need to find out if everything will work for you with the glass that you want to try.
Any beginner wants to play with optics first. Therefore, the choice should be the one where there is more of this optics and where it does not hover your brain with the presence of screwdrivers or extra contacts in the mount. Historically, what Canon has to offer.
And where is what optics is better and for what - the person will already decide for himself.

  • Igor

A talented beginner will acquire the right technique, a mediocre one and the D6 will become a useless toy ...

  • TwentinQuarantino

Participated in the survey. The results show the sheer dominance of Nikonists who shoot on the D7000 and dream of the D780))

    • Pokemon

OMG, there would be something to dream about ...
Yesterday, for fun, I decided to look for a photo from the D780 on flickr.
I searched and found 2 or 3 half-dead groups, photos of which add 4,5 cripples from these cameras.
I'm exaggerating, of course, but compared to the number of photos from the D850 (which costs +/- as well as the D780), and from the new Z cameras, the number of photos from the D780 is negligible, especially compared to the D750 or the 4th Pyatak. This is especially noticeable in daily photo uploads.
Nikon specially put up such a protective price tag for this next respin / iteration of the D600, because no one takes glasses under the F mount, everyone either sits on old ones (28-105 or 35-70 are still popular not only with us) or buy more successful ones lenses from competitors. Nikon wants to sell only his glasses for overpricing. That is why this price is now for the Z6 and so overpriced for the D780.

Dreaming)) But certainly not about d780)))

I shoot with d7100, but I want Fuji. A small small crop to carry with you at all times, and SF - for all sorts of highly artistic exercises. Nikon looks like the amateur market has merged irrevocably.

No, he didn't. It's just that this market is low-margin for them, so they try not to invest here.
Canon (which already has 2 mounts for crop cameras, but no new interesting lenses for a long time) and Fuji are still investing in this market.

Just the other day, Panas officially announced that he would no longer make amateur MFT cameras, but only the premium segment.

I would plyusanul something for a micra (Olympus in particular) for a change. If you put up with some obvious limitations of the norms, the devices are comfortable. If you wish, you can assemble a mini set “always with you” and quite cheaply (without top glasses, essno). Of the shortcomings, in fact, only matrices in terms of bitness and high ISO.
If now I chose from scratch, I would probably choose only the BZK, Olympus omdem5mk3 or FF Nikon Z5, or give FF Canon a chance, but this is all so, without a spark. Would be richer and thicker, I would probably take SF from Fuji. One and a half crops are not particularly interesting to look at, somehow.
In general, I am very glad that I no longer need to choose anything, because there is nothing special to choose from, and it will not be possible to return to the ZK either ... There are a lot of techniques and the overall quality of its elaboration has decreased in sensations.
