              I wrote about focusing from infinity for a reason. you need to try more precisely. For example, it may be that the most accurate focus will correspond to the moment of extinction of the point when focusing slightly to the other side. that is, we turn the focus, notice that the point is on, we begin to turn it back, and as soon as it goes out, this will be the exact focus. that is, you need to balance on the brink of ignition of this point. and AF correction should be introduced based on this.

                Some experienced photographers think this is better. On the forums, you can find the opinion that the focus sensors of older cameras better confirm aiming when focusing from infinity, due to the fact that the sensors are configured according to the principle of 1 / 3-2 / 3 in depth of field (it takes a long time to explain, especially for Canon).

                From my experience, I can say that often there is not much difference, especially with lenses that are not fast. Personally, I do not adhere to this rule and shoot as I like, at least I don’t waste time on focusing to infinity and then on smoothly decreasing the focusing distance. True, I shoot a lot and for keyframes I always make several takes with an attempt to micro-control focusing, in fact I get several shots with an attempt to focus from the MDF side and from the infinity side, but this happens automatically without an explicit output to the MDF or infinity zones, and it looks more like to focus bracketing. But usually with a good large JVI, everything works out the first time. Also, I rarely focus on the green dot or sound confirmation (if chip optics are used).

          The only Nikon device for which you can take something more or less with this old guy is the D700. Your 7100 will look terrible. I have both cameras, so I speak from experience. The only thing is that it works stupidly for 700 levs. Well, forgivable, like the first camera with a lv. And I had such lenses, analogs - Vivitar 70-210 2.8-4 komine, (like the sharpest of 70-210) and Nikon series E 70-210 4. Frigings are monstrous for all such zooms of those times, only from 80-200 2.8 units the situation has improved. And the af correction in the camera has no effect. For example, to correct af mechanically two different eccentrics near the mirror - one for adjusting in the manual (just for manual shooting) the other in af. The software correction must first know what kind of lens is installed. Once I bought a dropped d800, -20 was not enough for many lenses. So they twisted the eccentric for the manual, at first mistakenly, the effect was zero, they twirled a little for af - everything began to hit the target, plus a little bit of software adjustments.

There will be a more reasonable investment than this old thing without af.

    I have such a lens in my collection now, I mainly use it on Canon 5D. In focusing I am guided by the signal in the viewfinder, there are no misses. And with other lenses, everything is mostly clear.

    Problems with focusing with manual lenses often arise not because the "point" is lying, but when the field of focus is very small, and now I have caught focus, but at the moment of pressing the shutter the camera slightly shifted the camera, the subject of photography jerked slightly, and that's it. - we get out of the sharpness zone.

    PS About the price. I bought relatively recently (maybe up to a year) via the Internet, the equivalent of $ 40 (Ukraine). And if you take a “naked” lens, it turned out even cheaper, because there were bonuses attached.
