In this review, the 7Artisans DJ-OPTICAL 35mm F2.0 lens will be abbreviated as 7Artisans 35 / 2.
Important: 7Artisans 35/2 is available in different mounts. This review shows the 7Artisans 35/2 version for Sony E mirrorless cameras. At the same time, the 7Artisans 35/2 was also produced with the Fujifilm X mount.
Important: 7Artisans 35/2 is available in two body colors: black and silver. The overview here shows the black version.
It's important: 7Artisans 35/2 available in Leica M mount, the design of its case is very different from the one shown here in the review. The name of the Leica M mount lens says '7Artisans DJ-OPTICAL' near the front lens 35/2'instead of' 7Artisans DJ-OPTICAL 35 mm F2.0'. The Leica M mount version is also available in two body colors: black and silver. The optical design of the regular version and the Leica M version is the same.
It's important: Radozhiv already has 7Artisans DJ-OPTICAL 35mm F2.0 review from reader Radozhivawhich was used on a full frame camera Sony a7II. But owners of the Fujifilm X system asked for a review of this lens when used on a camera with an APS-C sensor. I didn’t have a lens with a Fujifilm X mount at hand, but I had 7Artisans 35/2 and a cropped camera Sony a3500... By the way, it turned out that the release of 7Artisans 35/2 for Fujifilm X was reduced. Only the Sony E version remains in production. Thanks to the 7Artisans official representatives for the detailed information.
In short
The 7Artisans 35/2 is a modern manual moderate wide-angle lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. It is produced for various systems and is often used on cameras with an APS-C sensor. One of the most compact such fixes. It is interesting for its high-quality assembly, 10 aperture blades and good image quality.

Assembly
It's important: 7Artisans 35 / 2 is available in black and silver. The review shows a lens with a black body color. The silver color of the case can be useful to those users who have silver or white / gray cameras.
The lens arrived for review in very good condition. The front cover is metal, very thick, dense and with only one latch. The cover does not spontaneously fly off, pleasant to handle. You need to get used to using this cover.
The lens has a built-in retractable telescopic retractable hood. In the active state, the hood is well fixed and does not spontaneously slide back.
In general, the lens is well assembled. 7Artisans 35 / 2 has bayonet mount metal and the lens case itself is completely made of metal, anodized aluminum is used.
The weight of the 7Artisans 35/2 lens itself is almost 300 grams. In the hands of the lens feels like a solid, albeit tiny, thing.
The filters are 43mm in diameter, the same diameter used by some other 7Artisans lenses.
The design is nice and the lens itself is very compact, perfect for small Sony APS-C cameras. On full-frame large cameras, the 7Artisans 35/2 looks very laconic.
Diaphragm consists of 10 petals and forms a hole in the shape of a regular decagon, while in the photographs in the blur zone, rather round discs of blur are obtained at any aperture value. The diaphragm can only be controlled manually using a special ring. The aperture ring rotates with clicks at fixed values. If you rotate the aperture ring smoothly, you can achieve any intermediate values, the ring does not jump to the nearest fixed values on its own. The aperture ring is too close to the camera mount, making the aperture ring inconvenient to use.
It's important: most likely the same lens can be found under other brands, for example, Viltrox DJ-OPTICAL 35mm F2.0.
Focusing
The focus ring is narrow, metal, ribbed. The ring rotates on 135 degrees (3/8 of a full turn). Focusing is smooth and enjoyable.
During focusing, the trunk of the lens runs forward but does not spin. During focusing, the entire lens block moves.
On the ring there is a scale with a focusing distance in meters and feet and a depth of field scale. The minimum focusing distance is only 35 centimeters, and the maximum zoom ratio is small, approximately 1:8.
7Artisans 35 / 2 has a small 'Focus Breathing' effect (changes in viewing angle during focusing). During focusing towards the MDF, the viewing angle decreases.
Focus Shift (focus shift, changing focus distance due to iris)
Have a hard stop (hard infinity mechanical stop) for fast and accurate focusing in all temperature conditions
Important: Focus peaking with 7Artisans 35/2 and Sony Alpha 3500 at f/2 works well.
It's important: Initially, the lens comes with a special mount that mounts on the focus ring and makes manual focusing easier. In the review, I visited the lens without this holder.
Image quality
7Artisans 35/2 is pretty good. At F / 2, it shows low sharpness, it is felt that even 20 MP on the APS-C sensor is too tough for him, but covering the aperture to F / 2.8 significantly improves sharpness. There is a noticeable amount of chromatic aberration (example). The lens does not always behave well in backlight (example). But vignetting on cameras with APS-C sensor is very low even at F / 2.0. Distortion is weak and almost invisible. At closed apertures, you can get the effect of a 10-ray star from bright light sources (there is an example of a star from the sun in the gallery). Lens bokeh is unusual, rather 'nervous', distracting, creating its own character.
Important: at the time of the creation of this review, there was no 7Artisans 35 / 2 profile for popular RAW converters. You can create a profile yourself or wait for its release.
Sample Photos
All photos in the review are shown without processing. Camera used Sony a3500... All photos are JPEG from the camera. Picture control mode 'Standard 0/1/1'. Functions' Corr. ob .: Shading ',' Corr. about: Chrome. aberr. ' and 'Corr. rev .: Distortion 'have been disabled. DRO: AUTO.
JPEG source pictures at this link (50 files, 270 MB). Sony a3500 I can’t shoot exclusively in RAW format, but only in RAW + JPEG or JPEG, because most of the pictures I took were made in JPEG.
You can see examples of full frame photos in 7Artisans DJ-OPTICAL 35mm F2.0 review from reader Radozhiva
My experience
7Artisans 35/2 is pleasant to handle and not particularly capricious to work with.
For mirrorless cameras with APS-C, it will still be cheaper to get a faster one 7Artisans 35mm F / 1.2, which at F / 2.0 will produce a result at the level of 7Artisans 35/2.
For full-frame cameras, finding a good 35mm camera is a tricky business. The 7Artisans 35/2 impresses, above all, with its compact dimensions and good assembly.
UPDATE: it turns out this lens is also sold under the brand Viltrox 35 / 2.

Results
7Artisans 35/2 - compact and functional. The maximum potential can be obtained with full-frame cameras. For cameras with an APS-C sensor, there are other interesting options, for example, a cheaper one 7Artisans 35mm F / 1.2.
10 main advantages
- compact sizes
- convenient focal length (both for full frame and for work on cameras with APS-C sensor)
- good build quality: the lens barrel is completely made of metal, including a metal bayonet mount and a metal front cover
- retractable hood
- smooth focus ring, 135 degree ring travel
- depth of field and focus distance
- ten aperture blades
- high aperture F / 2 (for example, old inexpensive manual 35s usually have F / 2.8)
- good sharpness in the center and across the frame on covered apertures (for APS-C)
- great creativity
10 main disadvantages
- quite high price tag (over $ 200)
- rather heavy weight, about 300 grams (for example, this is noticeably more than that of an autofocus full-frame Samyang AF 35 / 1.8 FE)
- no CPU pins to form EXIF
- rare thread for 43 mm filter
- aperture is not smoothly adjusted, as is done with 7Artisans 35 / 1.2, no preset ring
- aperture only closes to f/16 (not to f/22)
- custom front cover to get used to
- uncomfortable aperture control ring (narrow and too close to the mount)
- the lens is not 'hardwired' into modern cameras
- there are aberrations, low sharpness at F / 2.0, strong backlighting

>>But owners of the Fujifilm X system asked for a review of this lens when used on a camera with an APS-C sensor
One thing is not clear - why do the fujivods need this shnyatny manual almost non-name Chinese, when for the same money there is an excellent native autofocus xc35?
I agree, FUJINON ASPHERECAL LENS XC 35mm 1: 2 just recently announced, and this 7Artisans has been stamped for 3 years.
What for, this lens is needed if there is an autofocus YN35mm f2 for a penny ....
Is Yongnuo already producing autofocus 35 cameras for mirrorless cameras with Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Canon EF-M, Fujifilm X or Micro 4/3 mounts?
20 MP on APS-C KF=1.5x is the same as 45 on full frame. But still, 2.0 is not to say that it’s just bad, I just wish it was better
And it is interesting to compare this Chinese with the Mir-24 35mm / 2 (produced by Arsenal or KMZ).
Arsenalskiy Mir-24N is now sold for no more than $ 100, or even cheaper.
And the weight is only slightly more.
And on the UPC, you will have to add a long adapter.
For so long, no one has come up with anything cheap from the 35/2 series for the UPC. Jupiter-12 Forever.
According to new information, this lens is no longer produced for Fuji X, only for Sony E.
UPDATE: This lens is also available under the Vilrox brand - VILTROX 35/2
