Assembly, control, focus

Lens body made very high quality. Metal is used for all parts of the body. Focus ring wide, rubberized, comfortable, rotates approximately 235 degrees... Focus ring travel is smooth. The minimum focusing distance is about 20 centimeters, with a good maximum magnification ratio of around 1: 6.

TOU / FIVE STAR MC 1: 2.8 f = 24mm small and compact, with a front filter diameter of only 55mm.

During focusing, the front of the body frame with the threads for the filters extends forward, but doesn't spin.

The diaphragm device consists of only 7 blades. On heavily covered apertures, the diaphragm opening takes the shape of an irregular polygon.

On the case there is a focus distance scale, a depth of field scale and a mark for working in the infrared spectrum.

Image quality and sample photos

The lens does not like backlight, creates a large number of specific highlights... Overall, it shows good sharpness in the center of the frame at F / 5.6. Edges and corners at F / 2.8 are very weak, pulling up to a good level after F / 8. The center of the image at f / 2.8 on the 20MP APS-C sensor is weak. There is strong vignetting at open aperture; closing the aperture does not completely remove the vignette. Distortion is subtle.

Does Radozhiv have something like a rating of old manual wide-angle lenses that can be recommended for modern mirrorless cameras? Many people are looking for inexpensive full frame widths due to the high cost of new lenses.

    • Arkady Shapoval

There is no rating, good shiriks, even old ones, are not cheap. I would take it to the TOP-1 Yongnuo 35 / 2 for Nikon / Canon. Further modern Chinese manual inexpensive solutions. Then there are the original old lenses of past generations, including manual ones.

    • Alexey

      Take a look at Zuiko

      • Alexey

I had some experience with the Olympus OM 50 / 1.8 lens, and selected the best one. Alas, the result even at 12 megapixels Sony A7s turned out to be unsatisfactory.

        • Rodion

Old high-aperture fifty-kopeck pieces rarely work well on a full frame: almost all of them are made according to planar-like schemes and suffer greatly from field distortions. Now even some 50 / 1.8 have already departed from the classic design and offer completely different properties of the generated image. For example, Yongovsky 50 / 1.8 for UPC (although it seems to be a crop).

        • Alexey

zuiko 50 1.4 of the fifth version on 5DMkII is fine. on crops too.

          • Rodion

            And now I can't perceive the old 50 / 1.4 ...

            • Alexey

(shrugged) zuiko is a little worse than zais, but both are better than any old 50 1.4, including native kenon and native nikon, both D and G.
sigma art is arguably better, but noticeably more expensive and significantly larger. and Zuiko 28 2.0 is only slightly inferior to Tsaisu Distagon. only the zais has a higher micro-contrast.

            • Alexey

and then a counter question - what is good for now out of 50 1.4? except for sigma art I do not know.

              • boris

                Zeiss Milvus 50mm f1.4

              • Arkady Shapoval

It is not quite manual anymore, with an automatic diaphragm :).
But if the price does not matter, then with 50-55 / 1.4 there is a lot of good. Come to mind:

                Otus 55 / 1.4
                Tokina Opera 50 / 1.4 Nikon / Canon
Pentax 50 / 1.4 (almost like the previous one)
                Tamron 45 / 1.8 VC

And if we also take mirrorless cameras, then there are a lot of solutions, ranging from the old Sony FE 55 / 1.8 to the new Canon 50 / 1.2 RF.

              • Human

Is the HELIOS 44M-4 not very good at the UPC? (yes he is not 1.4)

              • Rodion

By the way, Yong 50 / 1.4 is more progressive than all the old junk 50 / 1.4 put together.

            • twm

“I can’t take it” - Rodion, does it mean that reviews on Konik Hexanones cannot be expected? :) And fifty rubles from Konika were not boring, IMHO

              • Alexey

minolta rockcore are excellent. but they will not stand on the canon. Alas. and then there are all sorts of rolls and the like from the SF, also mental pieces of glass.

              • Rodion

I had Hexanon 40 / 1.8, very attractive in terms of parameters. I liked it completely, it's a pity I didn't have the opportunity to try it on the full frame - I think it would not have hit the title ring in front of some Jupiter-12 or Mir-1.
Hexanones 50-57 mm specifically to buy and try I have no desire yet. Exactly like the rockies.

    • Rodion

Rating is extremely difficult to do because there is no objective scale. If you judge only by optical quality, then you need a standard and rigorous tests. And then - they still will not be able to give an adequate assessment of the resistance of the lens to backlight, color rendition and other nuances. If we also take the cost, then it will turn out very badly.
With mirrorless cameras and shiriks, the situation is simple: almost all current Chinese crafts are better than the old manuals. The only thing is to remember about the color shift and the small pixel. Those. the lens cannot even be assessed separately from the camera.

      • Alexey

and which Chinese is better than, for example, Tsais Distagon (any of them) or Zuiko 28 2.0?

        • Arkady Shapoval

At the cost of a zeiss distagon 28 / 2.0, you can buy a modern autofocus original lens. This is the dilemma.
As for Chinese solutions, some modern 7Artisans 28 / 1.4 at F / 2.0 it will often be no worse.

          • Alexey

dear price, I do not argue. but zuiko and not very expensive and very sharp. almost the sharpest shirik of all (except for elek and zais and lyika). the Chinese never dreamed of such quality there.

            • Arkady Shapoval

I have not been so skeptical about the Chinese lately. Their lenses under the bzk are so generally very interesting

              • koba

I'll add something to this discussion. Life is changing in China too, and so quickly that it is even difficult for other countries to understand it. So why did Laowa suddenly start producing top-end lenses? The secret is that, as I accidentally found out, 6 or even more German opticians have been working in it for several years, and with very, very high qualifications, as well as several engineers from other European countries. They make lenses mechanically and optically flawless or even unique. And almost all of them are not like old Zeiss (which I personally adore too!), But new ones are also sometimes superior. They only have lenses from Lake as standards, they are equal to them, and, if we discard snobbery and old stereotypes, they do it perfectly. They recently announced their L-mount lenses as they are confident they can sell them to top-end camera owners. In addition, other manufacturers have pulled up. Recently Christopher Frost himself, having tested the new autofocus lens Viltrox 23 / 1.4, admitted that it is better than the native one from Fujifilm. I have already written here that making a lens in modern conditions is a mere trifle, and the whole thing rests on the economic side of the issue, the technical side can be mastered even by start-up companies. In today's world, it is even possible to completely order a lens design from any company including Leica, and make it anywhere, it is even possible for Zeiss Batis to design and manufacture entirely Tamron. And this is just the beginning, the Chinese are only at the beginning of their journey, but as they were able to drag out many areas of production in a short time, they will do so in the case of lenses, mirrorless cameras helped them a lot in this. By the way, Ken Wheeler, who cannot be denied knowledge, and who is not an ambassador of the companies, also began to recommend some Chinese lenses precisely as the best, and not just because they are cheap. Snobbery is a losing business! Soviet helios also does not shine optically, but it does its job perfectly well, and the same Wheeler included it in any set of photographers in any situation.

              • Alexey

I do not use and do not plan to use the UPC, so I will not say anything here - I do not know.

  • Alexander

I would like to mention the photographer Natalia. Great photos. The photo with three boats is just wonderful!

    • Arkady Shapoval

This is the 20th review that Natalia helped to prepare

  • Sergei

Interesting lens, pictures from Nikon are amazing. Olx sells a similar Tou / Five Star 28mm f2.8 with Konica AR mount. Interestingly, the same quality?
