Lens body made very high quality. Metal is used for all parts of the body. Focus ring wide, rubberized, comfortable, rotates approximately 235 degrees... Focus ring travel is smooth. The minimum focusing distance is about 20 centimeters, with a good maximum magnification ratio of around 1: 6.

Image quality and sample photos

The lens does not like backlight, creates a large number of specific highlights... Overall, it shows good sharpness in the center of the frame at F / 5.6. Edges and corners at F / 2.8 are very weak, pulling up to a good level after F / 8. The center of the image at f / 2.8 on the 20MP APS-C sensor is weak. There is strong vignetting at open aperture; closing the aperture does not completely remove the vignette. Distortion is subtle.

      There is no rating, good shiriks, even old ones, are not cheap. I would take it to the TOP-1 Yongnuo 35 / 2 for Nikon / Canon. Further modern Chinese manual inexpensive solutions. Then there are the original old lenses of past generations, including manual ones.

          Old high-aperture fifty-kopeck pieces rarely work well on a full frame: almost all of them are made according to planar-like schemes and suffer greatly from field distortions. Now even some 50 / 1.8 have already departed from the classic design and offer completely different properties of the generated image. For example, Yongovsky 50 / 1.8 for UPC (although it seems to be a crop).

                I had Hexanon 40 / 1.8, very attractive in terms of parameters. I liked it completely, it's a pity I didn't have the opportunity to try it on the full frame - I think it would not have hit the title ring in front of some Jupiter-12 or Mir-1.

      Rating is extremely difficult to do because there is no objective scale. If you judge only by optical quality, then you need a standard and rigorous tests. And then - they still will not be able to give an adequate assessment of the resistance of the lens to backlight, color rendition and other nuances. If we also take the cost, then it will turn out very badly.
      With mirrorless cameras and shiriks, the situation is simple: almost all current Chinese crafts are better than the old manuals. The only thing is to remember about the color shift and the small pixel. Those. the lens cannot even be assessed separately from the camera.

In today's world, it is even possible to completely order a lens design from any company including Leica, and make it anywhere, it is even possible for Zeiss Batis to design and manufacture entirely Tamron. And this is just the beginning, the Chinese are only at the beginning of their journey, but as they were able to drag out many areas of production in a short time, they will do so in the case of lenses, mirrorless cameras helped them a lot in this. By the way, Ken Wheeler, who cannot be denied knowledge, and who is not an ambassador of the companies, also began to recommend some Chinese lenses precisely as the best, and not just because they are cheap. Snobbery is a losing business! Soviet helios also does not shine optically, but it does its job perfectly well, and the same Wheeler included it in any set of photographers in any situation.
