Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T *

Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T *. increase.

There is already a version overview on Radozhiv Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF T *, which is the predecessor of the lens version from this review. Lenses use the same optical design, the same coating, the same body and look like two drops of water. The image quality from the ZF and ZF.2 versions is identical. The differences are only in the little things. Actually, in this review I will consider exclusively the differences between the Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T * (abbreviated ZF.2) and Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF T * (Abbreviated ZF).

Differences between ZF and ZF.2

  1. The ZF version was released with 17 September 2007... The ZF.2 version is newer, the development of which has been announced November 16, 2009, but officially presented only in spring 2010.
  2. ZF has'bunny ears'on the aperture ring, making it compatible with older Nikon F-mount film cameras. The ZF.2 version already comes without these ears.
  3. ZF.2 has additional aperture ring release button in position F / 22. The button is needed for convenient operation with the lens when controlling the aperture directly from the camera itself. It prevents accidental rotation of the aperture ring and the camera going into 'fEE' error mode.
  4. The ZF.2 aperture control ring has a slightly different design. For example, the ribs are located all over the ring, while the ZF is on the back of the 'bunny ears'edges are replaced by a flat surface.
  5. The ZF does not have microprocessor contacts (so-called CPU contacts). The ZF.2 has microprocessor contacts. it key differences between versions... ZF.2 allows you to control the aperture not only with the aperture control ring, but also through the camera itself, as is the case with all modern lenses (the setting is described after the difference block). The microprocessor contacts allow any exposure mode (P, A, S, M, and any automatic modes) to be used on any Nikon DSLR or mirrorless camera (although see the footnote below for D3400 и D3500). The CPU pins also allow you to conveniently work with EXIF on cameras of the younger Nikon line.
  6. The ZF version is 4 grams lighter than the ZF. 2. True, without weights, this difference cannot be noticed or felt in any way.
  7. Perhaps there are some other differences, for example, different boxes in which the lens was supplied.

To be precise, the Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T * can be classified as one of the rare lenses Nikon Nikkor 'P' series, they are also called 'AI-P'. Their main feature is manual focus only and availability 5 microprocessor pins.

To be able to control the value aperture lens Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T * straight from the camera, you need to rotate the aperture control ring to F / 22, after which it will automatically lock with a small special lock button located to the left of the marks aperture... If this is not done, then on a number of cameras, on the display, the error 'fEE' (ring aperture installed incorrectly). Some cameras with diaphragm rheostatallow you to control the aperture using the ring aperturebut only in metering modes exposure 'M' and 'A'. You can read more about this issue in the section on Non-G Lenses. Ring aperture rotates with clicks, it has F / 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22 (full stops) values, you can set one intermediate value between pairs of numbers (except between F / 16 and F / 22 ). Other intermediate values can only be set using the camera menu. The diaphragm ring rotates with a pleasant and pronounced click.

Unfortunately, despite the presence of microprocessor contacts, with the Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T * version of the Nikon camera do not work in focus trap mode (when the shutter release is only enabled for precise focusing). Precise focusing is indicated by only green dot in JVI or the corresponding display in EVI or on the Live View display. In any of the options no sound confirmation about a successful focusing.

On the camera, the lens is recognized as autofocus, but set to manual focus mode. At the same time with the version Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF T * you can get a focus trap by using dandelion Lushnikov.

Although the lens has microprocessor contacts, it does not transmit the distance to the subject into the camera and is analogous to Nikon's NON-D lenses. This can sometimes affect accurate metering. exposure, especially when using flash.

It's important: Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T * on cameras Nikon D3400, D3500 can only work in 'M' mode. These cameras simply do not work with lenses like AI-P (which have a diaphragm control ring and microprocessor contacts). On all other Nikon interchangeable-lens digital cameras the Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T * will function like any other original lens on which autofocus is disabled (by analogy with AI-P). All camera modes such as P, A, S, M and any automatic modes will be available.

Sample Photos

Last time I did not have time to drive a wonderful Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF T *  at no less wonderful Nikon D40, and therefore with the Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF.2 T * I have the opportunity to improve the situation.

You can download the original photos in RAW format (12-bit '.NEF') at this link (30 files, 150 MB). All photos were taken using a polarizing filter. Hoya 58mm PL-CIR... Who are examples with Nikon D40 seem uninformative, due to the low pixel density and the APS-C sensor, it can find examples of images on a full-frame camera, as well as on different cameras with a high pixel density in the review of an optically identical lens Carl Zeiss Distagon 2/28 ZF T *... I'm just having fun with Nikon D40, you can also, for example, look into the lens overview Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 2/50 ZF.2 T *which is good 'unlocked the potential'' old ladies Nikon D40.

glass is beautiful for everyone, as for prices :)

  • notapic

Such a lens is worthless as long as there is a sane replacement at a sane price in the form of the AF-S 28 / 1.8. And this one looks more like a fashionable and expensive thing, but not a tool for serious work. The same Sigma 24-35 / 2 costs less than this one, but offers more.

    • Alexey

nothing like that)) I shot on this zais, its picture in terms of sharpness, color rendition and micro-contrast is one of the best that can be.

That's right - just looked at prices for this and 24-35 sigma. This lens in excellent condition can be purchased for $ 770 and a sigma lens for $ 500.

and where does the price? the author of the comment above went through the QUALITY of the glass. but just to him there are no complaints. and the price - well, it's price. everything is good.

I often take Sigma 28 / 1.8 EX DG for car shooting. He solves the d610 / d750 matrix without problems. Looking closely at Nikkor 28 / 1.8g for the future. I will not take manual lenses for work - by the evening I have no strength with autofocus, but with manual… no. Manual ones are for the soul, but not for making money.

A sane replacement and will not be close to Zeiss in the beauty of the picture.
