The Nikon 20 / 1.8G is pleasant to the touch. The lens body is made of plastic, the Nikon 20 / 1.8G weighs only 350 grams. But the light weight and plastic body sometimes gives the feeling of an inexpensive solution. In addition, if you shake the lens slightly, you can clearly hear how something dangles inside... This is the norm and is not a breakdown.

The focusing ring is very wide and rubberized. Nikon 20 / 1.8G uses metal mountnear which is located rubber compressorthat protects the camera mount from dust and moisture. Nikon 20 / 1.8G is made in China only.

There is a bayonet mount mark on the body and a mark for quick installation of the hood. The lens uses a small plastic hood HB-72, which is fixed in special grooves located near the front lens of the lens. A hood is included with the lens. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation. In this position, access to the focusing ring is partially lost.

Nikon 20 / 1.8G focuses thanks to 'SWM'-motor (Silent Wbird Motor is a quiet wave / ultrasonic focus motor) and refers to 'type lensesAF S'(with built-in motor focusing), and therefore it will automatically focus on any Nikon digital SLR camera. The lens is used compact swm motor.

The lens will automatically focus on all Nikon DSLR cameraseven on amateur series models Nikon DXthat do not have a built-in focus motor: D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D3300, D3400, D3500, D5000, D5100, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600as well as mirrorless cameras Nikon Z with adapter FTZ / FTZ II.

During auto focus, the motor does its job quietly enough, but still noise from the focus motor is clearly audible in videos recorded using the camera's built-in microphone.

Auto Focus Speed ​​- high... The running time of lenses from infinity to MDF and back is short.

There are no special problems with focusing, but on my cameras I noticed rare focusing errors, there are few of them, but they still make themselves felt. I associate them with the difficulty of focusing on an ultra-wide angle lens with high aperture... But overall, the lens focuses quickly and confidently.

The front lens remains stationary during focusing. The lens uses focusing type RF (Rear Focusing), which is done by moving the rear lens group. For practical use, the RF type focusing is no different from the IF ('Iinternal Focus' - 'Inner Focus'). With this lens, you can easily use any filters, for example, polarizing.

The minimum focusing distance is only 20 cm, while you can shoot with a maximum magnification of 1: 4.35... This is an excellent indicator for a lens like this. An ultra-wide angle of view paired with a small MDF helps to create photos with an interesting wide perspective effect.

During auto focus, the focus ring remains stationary. In manual focus mode, the ring rotates approximately 90 degrees, when the extreme positions are reached, it does not rest, but continues to slide, without affecting the focusing. It is quite difficult to focus manually.

On the lens housing you can find focus switch 'M / A - M'. In the 'M / A' position, auto focus works with constant manual focus priority. The 'M / A' mode is very convenient and useful - for manual focusing or focus correction, you do not need to additionally switch the lens to the 'M' mode.

Focus Features:

  1. There is a depth of field scale, but only for F / 16
  2. There is a fairly strong 'Focus Breathing' effect (changes in the angle of view during focusing). When focusing towards MDF, the angle of view decreases
  3. The lens has a scale with a focusing distance in meters and feet in the form of a window. There are values ​​only for the infinity mark, 0.4, 0.25, 0.2 meters. In fact, this scale is useless.
  4. The Nikon 20 / 1.8G does not have a hard infinity mechanical stop for fast and accurate infinity aiming under any operating temperature.
  5. Focus Shift (shift focus, changing the focus distance due to iris) is missing.
  6. The lens must be well compatible with the Nikon FTZ adapter for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras and with a Nikon FT1 adapter for cameras Nikon 1

Image quality

The lens was developed at a time when there were already 36 MP Full Frame cameras and APS-C cameras with a 24 MP sensor, and therefore the Nikon 20 / 1.8G should not have any problems with modern high pixel density sensors.

The lens frankly surprised at 24 APS-C sensor Nikon D3200 (CMOS, 24 MP), where already at F / 1.8 in the center of the frame it created a very sharp image. On camera Nikon D700 with a low pixel density Nikon 20 / 1.8G is simply gorgeous in terms of sharpness.

Sharpness

Aberration

  • lens suffers from chromatic aberrations

Rest

  • in the backlight, you can get large glare (Example 1, Example 2), but if you choose the right angle, then this can be avoided. Even if the lens catches glare, the overall contrast is high.
  • getting the effect of a 14-ray star is quite simple (example)
  • sometimes you can get neutral and even pleasant bokeh
  • the disks of confusion have concentric 'onion' circles from aspherical optical elements

Modern Nikon cameras, which were released after the announcement of this lens, easily automatically correct distortion and vignetting. Many cameras are able to automatically correct some of the chromatic aberrations. Sometimes software features that enhance the original lens image can work wonders.

If a camera that was released before 2014 is used with this lens, then shooting in RAW with the further use of the latest version of Capture NX-D or any other original modern utility allows you to automatically correct vignetting, distortion, and chromatic aberration.

My experience

I worked with Nikon 20 / 1.8G for about two weeks and shot several events with it, I was very pleased with the final image.

I really liked Nikon 20 / 1.8G. Nice and very functional lens. True, while working with Nikon 20 / 1.8G one gets the impression that you are working with a budget Nikon 35mm f / 1.8G DX... This is due to the plastic light body, in the middle of which something dangles and the compact focusing motor, which emits its characteristic sound during operation.

Nikon 20 / 1.8G is very good at crop, where it converts to a stock standard lens. 24 megapixels on the APS-C sensor is not a hindrance for him, even at F / 1.8.

The Nikon 20 / 1.8G is one of the sharpest lenses I've ever shot.

I recently reviewed a similar manual premium lens. Carl Zeiss Distagon 2.8 / 21 T * ZF.2which is better than Nikon 20 / 1.8G in the image corners. Still, I think the Nikon 20 / 1.8G is a much more balanced solution.

Nikon 20 / 1.8G can be safely bought and used for its intended purpose.

      The native 16-35 / 4 is praised, as is the native 14-24 / 2.8. It depends on what exactly is needed, that should be looked at.

    One of the options for using this lens is for shooting night landscapes (the aperture allows), for which one of the most important criteria is the absence of a serious coma near open apertures. Unfortunately, I did not find information about this parameter in the review.

Due to the autofocus speed, the rotation distance was reduced to almost zero, I wonder how to work with this lens in manual mode now? And the good thing about the widths is that you can work in manual mode, use zone focus, hyperfocal ... For me personally, this lens, as well as its new ones, are completely useless, since in 99% of cases I work in manual mode at 24mm. A pity, a pity! The last suitable lens in this respect Nikon made 24 / 2.8 Ai, but soon, in the Ai-s version, it “corrected” the situation and never again set 3 meters markings on the distance scale, without which they turn into little useful toys. Interestingly, in the company of Nikon at least once you saw the shirikas from Lake?

I had to search on the Polish OLX website and ask my friends to buy it there. The Polish seller agreed to shoot test footage, so he saw that I was buying. Now I constantly shoot 35 along with 85 and 1,8, all from the XNUMXG series. And most importantly, I bought a third cheaper than a new one!

      I bought it for my 850, though I haven’t really tried it yet. There are also 85 f1.8 , 35 f1.8 and 105 f2,8. I have already tried them to the fullest, I’m just in love with 85ku)

    The extreme sharpness of the lens, in my opinion, harms the artistic side of the frame, turning the photographer into an extra. The best shots were taken on the Nikon D40. The review is still helpful. Now I definitely will not buy such a lens. I recently purchased Nikon AF 18mm F2.8. It turned out to be a very friendly lens. I managed to take a pretty clear picture at a shutter speed of 1/3 sec. from hands. Despite the all-metal body, this lens is not felt at all on the camera and does not strain the hands of the photographer. I would like to see a review of this lens. For some reason, there is little information about him on the Internet.

      There isn't much to write about him. He has a pressed aspheric of the 1st generation. Sharp in the center, loses resolution across the field, sharp corners only from f11. It is inferior in the picture to the zoom of 17-35 and even 18 3.5 ais, which is without aspherics. This is the reason for its low popularity. For the collection - well, nothing, but for practical use it is better 17-35 or 16-35

    I ask for advice. I can not decide and choose between 20mm and 24mm. The target for this lens will be landscapes and sometimes reportage or group portraits. Won't 20mm be too wide for group portraits? Surely the extreme people will begin to stretch. And wouldn't 24 be too narrow for landscapes?

      I recently had a Voith 21 1.8 here - so even single portraits were quite good for them to shoot. So definitely 20mm will be more interesting!
