Among Soviet telephoto lenses, Jupiters and Taira are well known to amateur photographers, while Industar is associated more with staffers. However, the USSR did not always have enough of these rather expensive telephones in manufacturing. Apparently, lenses were born on this basis at the KMZ, which were supposed to serve as a temporary replacement for scarce optics. So, for example, the lens was extremely unpopular among amateur photographers (but appreciated by collectors) Telemar-22 200 / 5.6. And the ersatz-weaving became the small-format version of the Industar-24 medium-format lens presented in this review, which had previously been used on the Moscow-5 camcorder.

Design features

What is Industar-24M? This is a beautiful barrel made in a brilliant aluminum case with a design typical for Soviet optics of the era of the 50-60s. As expected, the lens is equipped with distance scales and depth of field, there is no infrared shift mark.

On the case, it is easy to notice a wide focus ring, which has a nut-like appearance and is a remarkable feature of Soviet optics of those years. The corrugations have rings for presetting and closing the diaphragm, and it is also present on the shank of the lens to facilitate its replacement on the camera.

The lens case is almost empty inside due to the large rear segment of the lens block, the center of gravity is noticeably shifted forward. Although with such a shoulder this is not a problem, as, for example, in the case of Jupiter-36.

Behind the last lens, no light cutters are installed, which are necessary when using medium format optics in a small format. The blackening inside is very mediocre and brilliant.

Despite the dubious positioning among the line of small-format optics, Industar-24M has a solid (albeit taut - due to the presence of only one guide) helicoid with a small MDF for such a focal length - only 0.8 m. For comparison, Jupiter-9 has the same MDF for SLR cameras. The stroke of the helicoid is 19 mm, and the focusing ring makes an almost complete revolution. The lens block (and the front of the lens) do not rotate when focusing - it is quite useful when using a polarizing filter.

Industar-24M can be very easily disassembled into a lens block and a helicoid for the purpose of, for example, adjusting the working length: for this, you only need to unscrew the lens block with your left hand counterclockwise. It also opens up a certain scope for the modification of this lens: you can separately use its lens block with a diaphragm (for example, on a format camera), or you can use a helicoid.

Industar-24M has a twelve-petal diaphragm with a preset mechanism. I was not lucky - my copy required repair of this unit, and one lobe turned out to be faulty. Nevertheless, after solving this not-so-pleasant puzzle, the lens block was brought into a fully operational state. The loss of one lobe did not affect the performance of the lens: only with aperture of the order of F / 8 you can notice a small asymmetry of the circle of blur, and an incomplete aperture coverage with the aperture appears only on F / 16-F / 22.

The lenses of the lens carry a single-layer bleaching of blue-violet tones, which leads to a distortion of the light transmission of the lens and a substantial departure of the maximum transmission in the yellow-green region.

It is known that Industar-24M was produced since 1960 - exactly when the production of Moscow-5 cameras equipped with the same lens was completed. On the Web you can find photographs of Industar-24M with numbers starting with 000 ... and 00 ... (as presented in the review copy). Thus, we can assume that, firstly, the series of lenses was very limited, and secondly, the main motivation for the production of Industar-24M was the need to get rid of the remnants of optics for Moscow-5 cameras. Despite the “flaw”, the lens is pretty well made and looks nice. But how does he take off?

Optical properties

The use of medium-format optics on small-format cameras is usually a necessary measure, since with equal FR and aperture ratio, a lens designed for a larger field usually has a worse resolution. The problem is particularly acute with Industar-24M, which in itself is not the best lens in its native format. At an open aperture, the sharpness of the lens is unsatisfactory due to spherical aberrations, strong chromatic aberration red-blue shades - apparently, they did not work hard to fix it in the lens (or, rather, simply could not do better - Industar-24 is a development of Industar-7, one of the first Soviet lenses). There is also a coma that reduces resolution to the edge of the frame. The situation only gets better with F / 4-F5.6, which is not surprising - Industar-23, a lens of the same years of development, has aperture F / 4.5 and shows a good result with an open aperture. The best result is achievable with an aperture of F / 8.

The medium format nature of the lens lets you know when it comes to contrast. No light-cutting diaphragms are installed in the lens body, the “extra” rays in a small format are reflected and cause a strong drop in contrast. The lens requires a lens hood. Enlightenment not only does not save the situation, but almost exacerbates it: it is very difficult to get rid of the blue veil in the backlight in the editor. Only in the simplest lighting conditions does the lens produce a picture that is more or less decent in contrast and color.

The bokeh of Industar-24M is quite soft and even, but the circle of blur has a wide fuzzy edging, painted in blue. A similar feature negatively affects the perception of the color image obtained by this lens. Since the Industar-24M small format does not have vignetting, the circles of confusion do not change their shape when moving from the center to the edge of the image.

In general, the optical quality of the lens is unsatisfactory from the word at all.

The following are examples of photos on a Sony A7s camera (shooting RAW and processing in Imaging Edge).

I made an attempt to improve the contrast of the lens by coating the lens area of ​​the lens with black matte paint. At the same time, the contrast noticeably increased, the whitish halo disappeared, before that it was manifested in each picture. However, of course, this will not correct the aberration of the optical system.

Conclusions

There are no miracles. Beautifully molded from the remnants of optics for the Moscow-5 Industar-24M camera, which claimed the role of a short telephoto in the early 1960s, it turned out to be a very, very weak lens. Whatever it may sound, it is better to stand on a shelf rather than on a camera with such optics.

    This lens today is mostly of pure collector value.
    There were few of them.
    To adjust the picture to an acceptable quality, you need to blacken the inner walls and put in the tail ring-shaped side-beam cutoffs (if you are shooting on crop).
    If you need a good weaving, look for a worthy copy of Kaleinar-5.

      In principle, after blackening everything inside, it became not as terrible as it was - this can be seen from the photographs. Again, do not forget about the fact that old medium format high-aperture tesars (and 105 / 3.5 can be considered aperture for such a scheme) are more suitable for filming in soft light, in cloudy weather. The same is shown by the review of the recent Xenar 75 / 2.8 or my older Tessar 80 / 2.8.
