I got the idea to buy and shoot with the cheapest autofocus lens for the popular Nikon or Canon system. For several days I monitored large online flea markets in search of the cheapest autofocus lens. This time it became the lens SIGMA ZOOM-E AF-E 1: 3.5-4.5 f = 28-70mm MULTI-COATED AUTO FOCUS for the Nikon system. In abbreviated form I will call him in the review Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5. The lens was bought for $ 17.

This is the second 'anti-crisis' review. Last time I had even more hardcore SIGMA DL ZOOM 35-80mm 1: 4-5.6 MULTI-COATED, but it was used on the 'advanced' camera Nikon D70s, this time Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 was used on a simpler camera - Nikon D70, which was also bought for a review of $ 17. But do not worry, the review has test photos and full-frame Nikon D800.

I just wrote a review, but the photographer helped me prepare basic examples of photos. tatyana_tatjyana (instagram)which I gave this lens for several months. As the result showed, even on Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 and simple Nikon D70 You can get nice, warm and atmospheric pictures.

Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is a compact universal lens for film cameras. Allows you to use a range of focal lengths from wide-angle to short-telephoto. This set of focal lengths is very convenient and in demand. Nowadays, the lens is interesting only for its good assembly, slightly enlarged aperture (compared to other similar lenses) and a very low price in the secondary market.

Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is an analog of the original Nikon 28-70mm 1: 3.5-4.5 AF Nikkor (MKI). In general, the original lens is much better.

The Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is most likely the autofocus version of the manual lens 'SIGMA ZOOM-E 1: 3.5 ~ 4.5 f = 28 ~ 70mm MULTI-COATED LENS MADE IN JAPAN Ø52' (inscription near the front lens, period 1986 -1989).

Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is available in several modifications. The first under-versions of the lens had a slightly different design. Near the front lens of such lenses, the inscription is: 'SIGMA ZOOM AF-E 1: 3.5 ~ 4.5 f = 28 ~ 70mm MULTI-COATED LENS MADE IN JAPAN Ø52'. The identification of the lens is complicated by the fact that it was produced for different systems, which caused a slight change in the design of the body.

Assembly

Build quality Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is at a good level. Unfortunately, in the review I had a lens with a tight zoom ring and a rather badly battered life. I didn’t even try to somehow beautifully reshape his appearance in a lightcube or somehow ennoble his deplorable state.

The lens uses a metal mount. The retractable frame of the housing consists of one section. The zoom ring is rubberized. Ring aperture plastic. The zoom ring rotates 90 degrees without jerking. A similar body design is characteristic of very old Sigma autofocus lenses.

Focus rings, as such, the lens is simply has. For manual focusing, you can rotate a very thin part of the body frame, on which there are grooves for attaching a bayonet hood, or rotate the trunk itself. With the lens hood installed, you will need to rotate the lens hood to perform manual focusing.

The frame (trunk) of the Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 does not spontaneously change its size under its own weight.

The Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 uses a bayonet hood that locks into the grooves located on the main body of the body (actually on what can be considered the focusing ring). When changing the focal length, the hood does not extend with the 'trunk'. The hood can be installed in the opposite direction for transportation.

Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 has a peculiarity - the trunk of the lens lengthens with a decrease in focal length (in fact, it moves in waves, but this is almost imperceptible). Sometimes it’s a little annoying, it’s usual that the longer the trunk of the lens - the more focal length installed on it. With this design, you can more efficiently use a hood that can be very long and protect the lens well from side light at any focal length.

Focusing

Auto focus speed is average, comfortable for most photo tasks.

During focusing, the front lens and the frame for filters spin and drive forward. When changing the focal length, the front lens does not rotate.

The focus ring, or what might be called the focus ring, rotates 135 degrees. The stroke of the ring is smooth. The minimum focusing distance is 0.55 m. The maximum magnification ratio is only 1: 6.9 (weak). Manual focusing is very inconvenient due to the lack of a focus ring as such.

When used on a camera Nikon D90 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 1000 focusing system) and Nikon D70 (with unpretentious Multi-CAM 900 focusing system) behaves well, very rarely makes a mistake in focusing. On camera Nikon D90 I checked the presence of the back and focus front at different focusing distances and different values ​​of the focal length (infinity and MDF as well). Pictures taken using the Live View mode (which does not suffer from back / front focus) were used as a measure. Focusing accuracy using phase sensors completely coincided with the Live View mode.

Important: but on camera Nikon D800 the lens did not focus well on infinity, there was a feeling that the lens rests on the focus ring to infinity, but the camera does not confirm accurate focusing.

It's important: auto focus with this lens is available only when using him on cameras with built-in motor focusing.

Only auto focus and sound confirmation of focus will not work with these cameras, all other important functions, such as automatic exposure metering and automatic iris control, will work well.

Focus Features:

Image quality

Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is an optically weak lens, perhaps in the review I did not have the most successful instance. Weak sharpness on open apertures, strong chromatic aberration, strong barrel-shaped distortion at 28 mm focal length, a lot of glare in the backlight. And Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is not optimized for working with digital cameras.

Nevertheless, on covered apertures, the center of the image can show acceptable sharpness, which is quite enough to get decent photos, especially on cropped cameras of the Nikon DX series.

My experience

This review of Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is part of the project “anti-crisis solutions” and “good photos for cheap equipment”.

Quite often I receive messages or calls like “I bought a Nikon D850 / Canon 5D Mark IV + 24-70 / 2.8, but the pictures do not come out, either they are boring, or they do not satisfy me. What else can I buy so that I can shoot this and that. ” There may be many comic answers, but the essence remains the same - technique is a secondary element in creating a good photo. This approach allows you to focus on other key things that are responsible for a good result. Of course, I strongly recommend everyone to use the highest quality photographic equipment, but sometimes this does not have any decisive influence on the final product.

The SIGMA ZOOM-E AF-E 1: 3.5-4.5 f = 28-70mm MULTI-COATED AUTO FOCUS MACRO is a classic example of a lens from a bygone era. In it, even the markings and the name give back to the old days. Nowadays it is very rarely indicated in the name of the lens 'MULTICOATED' and 'AUTO FOCUS', but for its time the presence of autofocus and multi-coating was a serious advantage and this could distinguish the lens from a huge crowd of similar manual brothers.

Nowadays, they have ceased to indicate the focal length and aperture values ​​through the tilde (curl '~'): '1: 3.5 ~ 4.5' and 'f = 28 ~ 70mm', and you rarely come across the indication of the focal length through 'f ='. Due to the reliable assembly, the Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 will live for more than a dozen years. As practice has shown, some non-motorized lenses are very tenacious, especially for systems with lever aperture control. For example, in the case of such lenses for Canon, they can often fail due to breakdowns of the built-in focus motor and built-in iris control mechanism, and there can also be much more compatibility problems on modern cameras.

By itself, the Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 is a very compact lens with a very convenient set of focal lengths. Slightly oversized aperture (F / 4.5 versus F / 5.6 for darker counterparts) allows autofocus to work better, and overall gives a gain of 1/2 step in many categories.

Sigma AF-E 28-70 / 3.5-4.5 can be a street station wagon (street photo) in both full-frame and cropped cameras. Optical lens is weak.

  7. there may be incompatibility with some cameras and / or teleconverters (no exact data). For example, errors in the correct entry in EXIF values ​​'28 /3.8 and 70 / 4.8 'when used on some Nikon cameras
  8. lack of data about the lens in modern cameras, which makes it difficult to automatically correct some types of distortion (distortion etc.)
  9. weak maximum magnification ratio, which is only 1: 6.9 (for example, whale Nikon 18-55 GII allows you to shoot 1: 3.2)

    Still, I would recommend some kind of fix as an “anti-crisis” solution. I bet the good old fifty dollars - yes, the flexibility of use suffers a little, it is not possible to get closer everywhere, but in any case, you can be sure that in the given conditions it will not let you down.
    Sometimes I think, maybe why are these zooms in general? Take another 28 and 200 ...

    My first kit: Nikon D70s ($ 40) in very good condition with a range of approximately 30 frames and Nikkor 000-28G ($ 80) also in very good condition. The lens turned out to be quite decent, the camera is also decent, at least 40MP (for amateur tasks this is quite enough, because it is more than the resolution of the screens of most pocket and desktop gadgets!). The screen is small, but for me, it was clearer on it than on the Canon6D full-frame screen. And 5D does not connect via wire to the computer (there is no driver support, however, I haven’t tried it on Win 5) and through OTG to the phone, and the D10s sees both the laptop and the phone (you can quickly view it on the big screen during shooting).

    Many beginners avoid such old technology, preferring Nikon 3-series or Canon analogs with live-view and because of “what, only 6 megapixels ??”, and I will not say that in vain, because who is more convenient to work with, and the result it will be better. But the D70s is a very decent device with a “screwdriver”, quick settings for an additional screen and a long-lasting battery. I don't know how much it differs from the D70.

    When it comes to lenses like 28-80 for full-frame crop, this is a compromise. 70-80mm is noticeably nicer than 55mm, but 28mm is noticeably less pleasant than 18mm. And the 28-70 (80) is cheaper, because there is no built-in motor, and owners of a full frame rarely look at them today, and most owners of the Nikon 18-55 crop are more convenient, since many models do not have a “screwdriver”.

      1) They slid a dead / barely alive camera / lens.

She just loves to shoot, which many amateur and photographers lack.

                I cannot agree with this statement. Take at least the exposure - in the overwhelming majority of cases, the exposure is very correct in accordance with the plot (which, by the way, in my opinion, is really not enough for many photographers of different skill levels).
                And this cannot be the result of the camera's automation (especially the D70). This is either conscious management of the shooting process, or a decent selection from a huge array of all sorts of different shots (over- and underexposed), which in fact also implies an understanding of what is correct exposure. The same goes for focus, and, at a stretch, everything else. And picking in RAW is more often than not just a harmless hobby, in my opinion, I don't see anything really bad in it.
                Regarding the challenge - I just suggested an idea, thinking aloud no more, there was no one to offend the goal.

                No, everywhere (really everywhere) all the examples from this review have P mode and auto ISO (you can download the sources and see for yourself). Auto ISO on the D70 is still a problem, since ISO values ​​cannot just be taken and imprinted on sample photos. D70 writes them in some non-standard place (only if auto ISO is turned on). Therefore, for all 40 photos, I had to manually look at the value of the current ISO with the native utility and enter separately for each photo.
                My mother does not even know what exposure compensation or exposure itself is. Everywhere on-camera JPEG, I modified some of the pictures, because the sensor on the d70 is dirty. Everywhere a central focus point or auto focus point selection (I don’t remember which mode I left it). During testing, and this is about 5 months (3 winter months and 2 spring), only about 2000 frames were shot. I didn’t explain anything to her, she doesn’t read my reviews. Just a housewife with a soap box, a reflex mirror.
                By the way, this once again shows that the presence of the desire for good photographs is not always associated with a subtle understanding of the technical components. For example, in this case, the plot search and frame composition play a big role.

Same thing with OLED matrices for TVs. They are released only by LG, and TVs are released, except LG, Sony, Panasonic.
